From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Maintaining SCOV Assets by Howard Schulz As a homeowner, you may ask, what is the financial value of SCOV assets? It is the value of common area amenities, plus allocated funds. As of the third quarter of 2020, SCOV assets were valued at $26.5M. To say in another way, each homeowner has $10,600 of asset value associated with their lot. The Board and the General Manager are charged with safely and efficiently maintaining our SCOV assets. Funding and maintaining our assets is an ongoing activity. Capital improvement projects over the past years have included the restaurant and kitchen, the golf greens and driving range, the fitness center, the facilities at Desert Oasis, Catalina Vista and others. In addition, our asset reserve fund was established to accumulate financial resources to pay the major repairs and replacement costs for existing capital assets. This includes assets with a useful life of more than one year and a replacement cost of more than $1,000. The asset reserve fund has accumulated more than $5M, which is about 70% of identified needs over the next 30 years. SCOV has many common amenities (assets) for residents to use and for prospective buyers to consider when purchasing a home in our community. Over the next two months, you will be provided information about a significant project: the Activity Center Renovation Project. I expect you have heard about it already. The Activity Center Renovation Committee (ACRC) has diligently worked over the past two-plus years to investigate and receive feedback from the many users and clubs. They recently submitted a conceptual design recommendation which addresses a majority of the needs. The 34-year-old building is in need of improvements. Of all SCOV amenities, this building is used by the largest number of residents and clubs for numerous activities. This project is expected to require a vote of the community. Take your homeowner responsibility seriously. Investigate, join the Zoom forums, get your comments heard and ask your questions to get answers. Be a knowledgeable voter. Get the

Qualities of Character and SCOV As a former funeral director, I helped well over a thousand families during what is surely a stressful time in their lives. Many of those familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bonds were strengthened, and they came closer together during this time. A few other families separated and became more distant from each other. What was the difference? It is hard to tell, but one thing those who grew closer together had in common was they seemed to be forgiving of each other and relied on each other for support. At times, stress brings out the best and the worst in some people. COVID-19 has certainly been a stressful time. It has gone on far longer than most of us expected. We are all living through a time in history that will prove to show the best and worst of people. Here at Sun City Oro Valley, I am very proud of our community. Most of our residents have proven to be those who are forgiving and rely on one another for support. We have residents who reach out to their neighbors to make sure they are doing okay. They visit more over the fence or in driveways than before. You have been forgiving and understanding of others when they make unintentional mistakes. Most of our residents are showing the qualities of a cooperative and gracious community. These qualities are what are needed to build a happy Community Association that is tightknit and caring. You are those who make us all proud. Thank you. Please continue and lead the way.

Our SCOV community directory is a great reference. The directory is filled with many local phone numbers like emergency numbers, hospitals, agencies, Town of Oro Valley and much, much more. It even shows you how to sign up to receive emails from SCOV and the weekly “This Week In SCOV” report from the General Manager. I ask you all to take the time to really look at the first part of the book and see all the information that is provided to you. A lot of work goes into producing this book to give you all the information you need.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has been extremely busy in the last nine months. Many residents have had the time and resources to upgrade their properties; and this is a good thing. However, it has been a challenge in many ways, because some homeowners fail to provide the information that is needed for the ARC to make decisions on the submittals. As you begin the submittal process on our website, please take the time and effort to read all the directions that accompany a submittal. It is a two-step process. The first request you make on our website is for a plot plan and a submittal form. In answer, you will be sent a plot plan and link to the correct submittal form to fill out. The second step will be to open the plot plan attachment and mark the location of your project on the plot plan. Then open the next attachment and click on the link to fill out the submittal form. Please remember to fill out this form in its entirety and include any attachments that will make the project clear to the committee. This includes attaching the plot plan with your markings. In case you do not have a scanner, use your cell phone to take pictures of each supporting document. You can attach the picture to the form just like you would attach a picture to an email.

I am grateful for the continous service the Library has been able to provide to SCOV, despite the ongoing COVID restrictions. Since January 19, we have scaled back to curbside pickup only, Tuesday-Friday, 10 AM-Noon, but we will reopen for full service as soon as it is feasible. Throughout the disruptive months of the pandemic, thanks to our intrepid volunteers, we were able to operate five days a week from July through mid-January. Curbside service, first offered in June but continuing even now, is not likely to go away, as it has worked out nicely. In November, we hosted our first COVID-era author talk for a limited attendance audience. Our two Great Reads events were held as usual in November and January. These popular book talks are held twice a year for Friends of the Library (FOL) members. December featured our annual Book and Media Sale, benefitting the Library. In February, we will offer two exciting events, including our first Zoom author talk scheduled for Thursday, February 11, 10 AM and open to everyone. Look in Coming Events for link information. Also, a first for us will be a Great Views event presented by Garry Buck on Sunday, February 14. He will offer his movie recommendations, complete with trailers for all his picks, in this Zoom presentation. The link to this online event will be sent by email to all FOL members. Circulation of our puzzle collection has soared since COVID. Thanks to many who have donated new puzzles, we

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Mask in the Gym Get a mask that you’re comfortable working out in, but that you can’t blow a birthday candle out in, and keep it on from when you walk in the door to when you walk out, even if it means doing cardio or lifting weights in a mask. Keep in mind that as masks get wet, they get less effective. If you plan to work up a sweat, it’s a good idea to have a few masks available and change as they get too damp. Cleaning your hands before and after changing your mask is also important. I worked from high school through grad school in my family’s restaurant/ bar. After grad school, I moved to Peoria, Ilinois, where I met my wife Renee. For 10 years I worked in Finance at Caterpillar Inc. I left the corporate environment to start my own businesses. For the past 25 years I built, owned, and operated several theme food & beverage establishments in Peoria. Mike LaBarbera Why do you want to serve as a Board member, and what knowledge, skills and abilities do you have that will contribute to the Board’s responsibilities? I am an active, full time SCOV resident, having current membership in a myriad of clubs, holding leadership positions in the “Veterans Club SCOV” and “SCOV Bocce Club”. I organized, established, chartered and chair the “Veterans Club SCOV”, informing over 180 current members on available Federal, State and local VA benefits, volunteerism, patriotism, camaraderie, while recognizing and honoring Veterans in our community. I was Chair of the Flags & Signs Task Force and was asked to update the Master Declaration. I was part of a focus group with the Finance and Budget Committee. I organized and led the July 4th parade and recorded the SCOV Veterans Day video presentation. My past leadership experiences and varied successes during 20 years in the military and 15 years teaching high school JROTC, volunteering, organizational skills, self-motivation, forward thinking, ease in relating and communicating with others, provide me with the ability to effectively represent all residents of SCOV on our Board of Directors. I do not have an agenda as a Board of Director member. I strive for financial savings and safety. My recommendation to the General Manager to purchase, not lease, the water cost saving device for the golf course, saved SCOV over $25K last year.

What important goals and issues would you like to help the Board achieve? My wife Colleen and I bought our home in Sun City as our “forever home.” My desire as a Board member is to prudently seek facility modernization, funding enhancements and improvements to maintain market value of our real estate holdings, while continuing to maintain our strong fiscal solvency/growth. I will continue to seek ways to reduce spending costs. I will be fiscally responsible when establishing annual dues/assessments, managing assets and future commitments, increase outside funding and improve the efficiency of our operations, helping to keep and maintain our community as one of the most desirable places to live in Arizona.

Allan Mashburn Why do you want to serve as a Board member, and what knowledge, skills and abilities do you have that will contribute to the Board’s responsibilities? I am seeking a position on the Board of Directors for SCOV because I believe that everyone needs to give back to their community in some manner. I have the ability and skills that are needed for a position on the Board including a Business Administration degree from Utah State University. During the past forty years, I have had the opportunity to serve my local community and the State of Utah on various boards and committees. I served on the Vernal City council for fourteen years and as mayor for four years. During that time, I served on a number of boards including: the Airport Board, Consolidated Dispatch, Administrative Committee and the local Association of Governments. I also served the State of Utah on two boards. The first was the Utah Air Travel Board and the second was the Utah State Board of Oil, Gas and Mining. I had the opportunity to serve as chairman of the Board of Oil, Gas and Mining for two years. My professional work history was in the oil and gas industry. I was a manager for thirty years with Baker Hughes Corporation. As such, I was responsible for numerous employees, budgeting, coordinating activities, forecasting sales and expenses and all other activities associated with running a portion of a large corporation. Along with my wife, Kathy, we operated three successful small businesses and are still working with one of them. This provided opportunities, like all small business owners, to manage all financial, reporting and employee activities. What important goals and issues would you like to help the Board achieve? There are many things that make our community successful and desirable to live in. There are two, however, that I consider essential. The first is people, those that serve on the many committees and task force groups. Without them and the dedication that they have, SCOV would stagnate. I would support them. The second is our long term financial health. We need to make sure that we continue to have monies available for short and long term improvements and additions as trends in retirement communities change over time.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has been extremely busy during the last nine months, and at the time of this writing has over 40 active applications. Thus, if residents expect speedy review and approval of their projects, it is incumbent on them to submit complete applications. One way to ensure a complete application and a project that meets the Development Standards for a Permanent Improvement is to have a pre-submittal meeting with ARC representatives. While this takes committee members’ time, it will save time in the long run. We have also found that it could save you money by avoiding having a contractor work on a plan that would not be in compliance with the Development Standards. Before you begin preparing your application on the SCOV website, please take the time to read all the directions, especially the specific items that must be included with your submittal. Homeowners often fail to provide the information that is needed for the ARC to make decisions on the submittals. The ARC members devote many hours reviewing projects and then discussing them in Zoom meetings held every second and fourth Tuesday at 2 PM. The 2021-2022 SCOV Association’s annual operating and capital acquisition budgeting process began in January with department managers developing forecasts for operations and capital expenditures. Staff budget proposals are then reviewed by the General Manager and Controller to develop the draft budget. The first draft will be presented at the Finance-Budget Committee’s meeting Monday, February 22, 1:30 PM. Any additions or changes recommended during this meeting are used to develop a second draft, which will be presented and discussed at the committee’s special budget meeting Monday, March 1, 1:30 PM. If a third draft is needed, it will be reviewed by the Committee on Monday, March 22, 1:30 PM. The Committee will then forward its budget recommendations to the Board. The proposed annual budget will be presented to the Board of Directors at its Thursday, April 8 study session. The budget, with any Board changes, will be placed on the Board’s agenda for approval

If winter rains came in the past few weeks, they are the main cause of all the unwanted growth in our yards: weeds and grass. Putting pre-emergent herbicide down in your yard will reduce the number of weeds later, and it is well worth the cost and time to do it. If you choose not to use pre-emergent, you need your yard maintained monthly during the summer growing season. Even with pre-emergent, yards need to be cared for at least every other month. If you leave our community for cooler climates for a few months each year, it’s not too soon to line up a landscaper to take care of your yard while you’re away. Even in the desert, grass, weeds, bushes and trees grow profusely during our summer monsoon season and require attention. The arrival of lots of rain, or even a little, brings growth in summer and winter.

On Tuesday, February 16, The Views Golf Club hosts our annual Cure for Cancer fundraiser. The 18-Hole Women’s Golf Club will be organizing the fundraiser with the Pro Shop. Last year we raised over $25,000 for the University of Arizona Cancer Center. All golfers’ registration is $85 for the entry fee to play in the event. It will include golf and a drink ticket. There will be no lunch following the event this year. You will also have an opportunity to donate additional dollars and become a hole sponsor or buy a dedication card. The field is limited to the

first 120 paid golfers. Starting times will begin at 7:32 AM off the #1 and #10 tees. Many golfers have been asking some of the same questions about the new greens. This would be a good time to go over some of the concerns, questions and future plans for the greens. The first question that is commonly being asked is what type of grass was planted on the new greens. People have asked if it is bentgrass, Bermuda grass or something else. After a lot of research, the decision was made to go with TifEagle Ultradwarf Bermuda grass. People are confused because as the greens have gone dormant, the grass didn’t turn brown because they have been painted with a pigment to remain green. TifEagle, which is similar to bentgrass in playability, can be managed to produce turf health and playability while retaining constant color. Another major question is why are the greens so hard, and how long will they remain this hard. The greens are only about six months old, so they haven’t developed an underlying layer of organic matter (thatch). Currently, the grass blades are sitting right on top of the new sand base. As the greens mature, they will develop this organic matter which is much softer and more receptive for approach shots. Ideally, they need 1% organic matter for greater playability and turf health. Golfers also ask about future plans in maintaining the greens. To maintain the health of the greens, they still need to be aerified, along with increased amounts of verticutting and topdressing. Just because they are new, doesn’t mean these essential practices can stop.

Tuesday, February 9, 10 AM Tucson Museum of Art Talk Our February Tucson Museum of Art Talk will be presented live by Jaye-Lynn Trapp, a docent with the TMA for seven years. She will present “Arthur Dove Creates Landscapes of the Mind.” This is a special free monthly program for SCOV given by TMA docents and has been a favorite of our residents for over 20 years. Club members have sculptures in the display case outside of the Art Room in Catalina Vista and in the SCOV Library. Rainer Kurzel is a relatively new member of the Sculpture Club. He is in the final stage of his first project which the photo illustrates. Rainer is receiving instruction from Gene Eckebrecht on how to paint the sculpture that has been baked and sanded. Rainer will dip the paintbrush into shellac then into bronze metal particles. The mixture is painted on the sculpture. Once the coating is dry, a second coat will be applied to cover any missed spots.

A group of dedicated women come together on Tuesday afternoons to make pet beds. We have a lot of fun working together and invite you to join us. We cut up small fabric pieces and mix them with polyester fiberfill to put in a sturdy pillow-like case for a comfy bed for the animals at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. They are completely washable and dryable and come in various sizes. Some fabrics are wild, but we say the dogs won’t know the difference. The good news is that we completed and delivered 225 beds in 2020, despite COVID-19 restrictions. We feel good that this fabric is not going to the landfill. The picture shows a project in progress by Coni Arseneau. These are mug rugs or coasters that are 4 x 4 inches. One question that is always asked of our group is, “How long did it take you to make that?” Coni repaired a rug for a Sun City resident who asked, “How long do you think it took to complete this rug?” which was probably 2.5 x 3 feet. One mug rug took Coni around four to five hours to complete; you do the math.

If you are a member and haven’t returned to the shop for a while because you feel rusty, not to worry. The silver earrings pictured are really easy to make. It took just a few steps using the tools and equipment we have in the shop. 1) Cut two pieces of silver the same size. 2) Stamp the back with your initials. 2) Grind/file the edges until smooth. 3) Punch a hole at the top of each piece. 4) Hammer the silver to get a unique look, or leave plain. Kari’s simple silver earrings. 5) Curve the silver slightly by using a wooden block mold and soft hammer. 6) Polish. 7) Get or make a pair of pierced earring wires and you are done. This month’s featured woodworker is Don Coleman. A 25plus year resident and past president of the SCOV Board, Don built the benches in the gym and many other SCOV fixtures we take for granted. Don’s been creating beautiful works of art in the Wood Shop for the past 10 years. During the current COVID-19 crisis, the Wood Shop is open on a limited basis. At present, shop capacity is set at seven plus a monitor. Bob was one of the early leaders of the club, and in 2010 was instrumental in beginning what was to become the club’s major outreach program, the partnership with the Coronado K-8 Elementary School in Catalina. Bob, along with Harland Goertz, who died in 2019, began the Bob Cratty program of providing each fifth grade student with a high-quality astronomical telescope. Bob and Harland also began assisting teachers in the classroom with the Arizona-mandated astronomy curriculum. Countless hours at the school and the distribution of over 900 telescopes attest to the value of the clubschool partnership. Sadly, Bob passed away in December. Coronado School and the Astronomy Club are thankful to Bob and Harland for their contributions. We miss them.

This month features Huck. He came to member Janet Bitter through Northwest Boxer Rescue. He is their second boxer. During his first year, from what they can piece together, he was in Oklahoma, Montana (where he was surrendered to a shelter) and then Washington. They got him one day before his first birthday. He is 100% boxer. White boxers used to be routinely euthanized because about 20% are born deaf. Huck has perfect hearing, although sometimes he pretends not to. His favorite thing (besides his people) is his piggie. Huck celebrated his seventh birthday with an ice cream from Dairy Queen. He also loves kids, the beach and chasing deer and birds. Have you noticed your house plants lately? Take a look at them. If the leaves are yellow, you are giving them too much water. If the leaves have brown edges, they are telling you to water more. Boil some water with eggshells, and it compares to any commercial plant food. Open your spice cabinet and get the cinnamon to sprinkle on the dirt in your potted plants. It will prevent the powdery mildew. If your plant is spindly and leaning, it wants more light. Take care of these indoor plants now because soon it will be time to work outside. Unfortunately, the Garden Tour planned for April 10 is canceled. We’ll look forward to a tour in 2022. Our face-to-face meetings are suspended for now, but we continue to communicate by email.

Several months ago Havurah appealed to its membership for donations that would go to a needy family assigned to us by the Jewish Federation of Tucson. Not only did we reach our goal for the Mitzvah Magic Program, but we exceeded it, and will be able to give generous donations at Passover and Rosh Hashanah, too. Many thanks to our generous Havurah community for opening their hearts to such a worthy endeavor. The holiday of Purim begins the evening of Thursday, February 25. It commemorates the victory of Esther and Mordechai over a plot by the Persians to destroy the Jewish people around 475 B.C. The Mindfulness Meditation Club currently meets Tuesdays, 3 PM, outside at Catalina Vista (COVID protocol/ weather permitting) and online. The format is 15 minutes of mindfulness discussion followed by 25 minutes silent sitting meditation, 10 minutes walking meditation, 25 minutes sitting meditation. We understand that one hour of silent meditation is not for everybody, so we encourage everyone to come regardless of their experience level or schedule, as it is acceptable to come or leave quietly at any time. We are a diverse group from the Christian community (centering prayer), Buddhist community (zazen), and secular community (mindfulness meditation). Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band: you’ll need to bring your own. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Our club performs gentle water exercises designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion, which are great for those of us with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Currently, we have a rotating schedule, which allows 19 of our members who signed up to fill the 15 pool reservations that our club is allotted for our classes. Unfortunately, we will not be accepting new members until after the COVID restrictions are lifted. The current pool restrictions have been very difficult to deal with, but we’re happy that the pool is open. Please note: The outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held. We meet at 1 PM.

Our group-ride options are from 25 to 50+ miles. We always take time for coffee and conversation somewhere on these rides. Our Women on Wheels (WOW) group have their own agenda providing routes of 12 to 30+ miles. A little history on our two new officers. Doug Brown was born in Washougal, WA. He started working for Crown Zellerbach paper mill which lasted 40 years. He married his wife Laurie Doug Brown, left, and Nancy Vander Ark, right. in 1979. They have two sons who live in the Portland and Vancouver areas. His hobbies are hiking, biking and pickleball. Nancy Vander Ark moved to Oro Valley in 2018 from Phoenix. She has been married to her husband Cliff for 48 years. They have three children, two daughters and a son. With 87 new members last year and 352 paid members, ladder play and round robin continue to be popular, and we will need more courts to accommodate the participation.

If you are 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity tax-free as a QCD, which counts as your required minimum distribution but isn’t added to your adjusted gross income AND still get the new, sizable standard deduction against other income. It’s a win-win.
