From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors lougard789@gmail.com

Look To the Future by Lou Gard As I write this, I am waiting to get my second COVID shot; by the time you read this, almost all SCOV residents should have had their first shot and many their second. As you all know, it has been a difficult year for all of us. We have experienced something none of us could have imagined 15 months ago. Let us pray that it will be over soon. We have missed family gatherings, seeing friends, being able to travel, going to our favorite restaurant, being able to use the many amenities that SCOV has to offer (at least at the level we would like). And we have to wear those beloved masks. On March 5, Governor Ducey lifted occupancy limits on businesses while preserving distancing and masking mitigation. Hopefully, by the time you read this, all the implications of this executive order will have been sorted out. It is time to look to the future and remember what a great place SCOV is in which to live. Look around at the fantastic views of the Santa Catalina Mountains, enjoy the warm sunshine, take walks or ride bicycles and breathe the fresh air. Is everything here perfect? I cannot think of a place that is. But given all that is going on in the world, we have it pretty nice in SCOV. On another note, I will be leaving the Board of Directors at the end of April. It has been a pleasure and a very rewarding experience serving for five years. I feel honored to have been elected to represent you on the Board. More residents should run for the Board. If elected, you will get a better understanding of what makes SCOV tick and what a vibrant community we have. Not receiving the weekly email newsletter,

A Shot of Relief As we all see what is going around with COVID, it is a constant reminder that nothing is constant with this virus. Just this past month, Governor Ducey issued Executive Order 2021-05 which effectively sunsets capacity/occupancy limits on businesses as previously set forth in Executive Order 2020-47. This won’t help us at our restaurant as our tables are already spaced six feet apart, and social distancing and masking are still required. I also see that the CDC changed their recommendations on March 8. The Association will continue to evaluate and make changes as the Board and Administration look for safe ways to remove restrictions. In the meantime, for gettogethers in your homes, the CDC says, “You can gather indoors with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask.” They also say, “You can gather indoors with unvaccinated people from one other household (for example, visiting with relatives who all live together) without masks, unless any of those people or anyone they live with has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.” Some things have not changed yet. The CDC recommends, “You should still avoid medium- or large-sized gatherings. You should still take steps to protect yourself and others in many situations, like wearing a mask, staying at least six feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces.” As our community continues to take safe steps to reopen, if you haven’t already gotten your vaccine, please consider doing so as soon as possible. We’re encouraging our staff to do the same. I am a little younger but I have my appointment scheduled. I encourage all of you to not be too hasty in your personal reopening program. Keep yourself and those around you as safe as possible.

You Won! Explorer’s Best of the Northwest Awards There was a great response to vote for Best of the Northwest, evidenced by the winning outcome. SCOV placed first in Active Living Community, The Views Golf Club took first for Best Golf Course and The Views Restaurant placed first in Best Breakfast. The Views Restaurant placed second in Best Beer on Tap, Best Restaurant Curbside Pickup, Best Cocktails, Best Coffee Shop and Best Oro Valley Restaurant. Congratulations to the HOA, golf course and restaurant for being the best! We already know this, but it’s nice to share the news with Northwest Tucson. The recognition is well and good, but the real winners are each of you who make this a vibrant, healthy community. Thank you for all you do to make SCOV a wonderful place to live and work.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Following Guidelines and Protocol The past year has been challenging for all communities and their residents. As of this date, events can have no more than 50 people attending. This has put a temporary stop in arranging large shows for entertainment in our Auditorium. Finding activities for residents to do outside has brought some new and different ideas. SCOV residents are fortunate to be able to do outdoor activities, use craft rooms and art rooms, see indoor movies, have club meetings for games and cards and use the pool/gym and some dances, just to name a few. Each month has brought a new event in some form for all resi-

dents to enjoy. Zoom presentations have been welcomed by residents, and there will be more in the future. We are open to suggestions, but the safety of all residents is our priority.

Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 House Paint As you are aware, because of COVID, the Neighborhood Pride Committee has not been touring for almost a year. Many of you rely on their “eagle eyes” to alert you that it is time to paint your homes. Since that review and alert have not been available to you for the last year, please take the time to look at your house exterior and determine if it is time to paint. The Arizona sun is brutal, and its effect on house paint can vary depending upon what quality of paint was used the last time you painted, how many years have gone by since last painting, how light in color the paint was or how well the house was prepped prior to that painting. Often residents are very surprised when just five years have passed and the house needs to be repainted, whereas a neighbor painted 7-8 years ago and it still looks pretty good. Keep in mind that generally, darker colors tend to show fading quicker than lighter colors. Tip: If your house looks like it could use a bit of touchup and it has been several years since painting the entire house, please do not be tempted to touch up multiple areas (even with paint matched to current color). What happens is that the new paint will weather at a different rate, and you will end up with splotches or a look of hives, measles or chicken pox within a short time. Don’t waste the time, money and energy. Check with a qualified painter and seek a professional recommendation.

SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

Exciting news! The Library reopened for patrons in midMarch and expects to remain open the usual weekday hours, 9 AM-Noon and 1-4 PM, but check the website in case that changes. We hope to reopen Saturday mornings beginning in May. The protocols that kept us safe during the first partial reopening last June will continue: six patrons at a time, masks, social distancing, hand-sanitizing and cleaning. But if you feel safer using curbside pickup, that will still be available. Since COVID first affected our community, we have added over 2,600 new books, audio books, large-print books and videos to our shelves. Over two-thirds were purchased, the rest were donated. Uncounted thousands of magazines and hundreds of puzzles have been added and deleted. Magazines are removed when they are three months old (for monthlies) and four weeks old (for weeklies), and puzzles when they are missing pieces. All this sorting, cataloging, dressing (covering and affixing labels), shelving and reshelving of items takes a huge amount of volunteer power. Quarantining incoming items for 72 hours complicates the process. Even with the shutdown and months of reduced hours, circulation has been impressive. Over 19,000 catalogued items were checked out since March of last year, and that does not include the uncatalogued paperbacks, magazines or puzzles. Imagine what life would have been like without these thousands of items in the hands of residents over the past year. SCOV residents want to read or listen to books, watch movies, peruse magazines and work on jigsaw puzzles, no matter the state of the world, and the Library con-

tinues to find ways to meet their needs. You can reserve items online through the SCOV website, or by calling us at 520-917-8064. The phone line is staffed by volunteers, so please call during our hours of operation, which appear on our website.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Stretching A good stretch can leave you relaxed and calm. It’s also a great way to lengthen muscles and improve overall fitness. Whether it’s for physical or mental benefits, stretching is a great way to incorporate healthy habits into your day. Sure, we’ll stretch before or after a workout, but what about during the rest of the day? It’s critical to find ways to sneak in a few minutes throughout the day to stretch. The physical benefits are outstanding. As we age, our muscles tighten, and our range of motion is often minimized. Over the years, day-today activities may slow down and muscles may stiffen. With routine muscle lengthening, in little time you’ll see huge results if you continue to stretch daily. Stretching promotes flexibility, balance and muscle lengthening. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, April 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, April 14, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

The March Architectural Review Committee (ARC) article on diminishing mountain views has generated some talk, as we have had numerous emails and verbal responses concerning the height of bushes and trees. The objective is not to get rid of trees and bushes; it is to be aware of the views they might block. The Prohibited Plant List in our Development Standards includes plants that are prohibited for a number of reasons: height at maturity, excessive water consumption, maintenance headaches because of seeds and leaves, invasive species and tree allergies. Prohibited plants may also be attractive to potential pests such as bees, packrats and javelinas. If you are contemplating planting a tree, stand in your neighbors’ yards and evaluate, “Would I want that in my view?” Once trees and bushes are established, let them grow with nature’s rainfall, which will slow their growth. Keep them professionally trimmed regularly. We should all walk down our street, stop at various points, and take a look and evaluate how our trees and bushes look. Are they overgrown? Are they view blockers? If I removed or trimmed that tree or bush, would it open all our views? The ARC is looking for members to join our team. If you are interested in guiding our community to preserve our lifestyle, please contact the ARC at ARC@suncityorovalley.com.

SCOV pays nothing for the paper directory: The publisher finances it with ad revenue. But as more people use the Internet, fewer businesses buy ads in directories. Let the advertisers know that you appreciate their ads and keep your fingers crossed for next year. If the publisher can’t continue, we will need to decide if we want to pay for a paper directory ourselves. Did you know our directory is on the SCOV website? Find your neighbors’ names, or all the people from your hometown, or whatever you seek. The incremental search box will display results as you type. Are you included in the directory? New homeowners are unlisted by default. To add or update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 The Calendar Says According to the calendar, spring did get here. It is time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus or flowers. Even with our lack of winter rains, weeds are popping up everywhere, and when they are small, they are easy to remove. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until after they bloom, at which time they need to be removed. Trim any trees that block stop signs, or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front yards, no matter how cute they may be. Winter residents need their yards maintained during the summer, so the home looks cared for while it’s empty. Be sure to notify Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you while you are gone. Please continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

I’ve been asked a few times over the past two months why we should continue the Posse since there have been no patrols for the past year. The Posse is a valuable asset to our community for a variety of reasons. Some are: patrolling our area in order to report suspicious activity and keeping the criminal element out of our area, reminding residents to close their garage doors in order to keep out unwanted critters or persons and assisting Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD) and our Association with special event traffic management. This allows OVPD to spend more time in high-risk areas. An added benefit is that by continuing to keep our community safe, we reduce insurance costs for our Association, our homeowners and our auto insurance. We’re neighbors helping neighbors.

Spring is in the air, and we welcome the month of April. The Bermuda grass is starting to grow, which will allow us to open the driving range tee and the new short game area soon. As it gets closer, we will send an email to let everyone know the opening date. The Men’s Member/Member Championship is scheduled for April 9-10. All leagues are wrapping up their main tournament events this month, and we all look forward to hopefully being back to normal in the fall with shotgun starts and luncheons. Our Chip & Putt event on Thursdays continues through this month, starting at 4:30 PM. You can play up to six people per

group. The entry fee is $10 per person for golf, prizes, and one drink off the beverage cart before you tee off. Sign up online through the reservation system or call the Pro Shop at 520-825-3110. This month Yappy Hour will be Thursday, April 29, from 4-5 PM on the driving range tee. The driving range will be closed at 3 PM for a clean pick of all the range balls in the wash and desert areas. We look forward to enjoying the prime golf course conditions this spring and thank everyone for their support in playing golf.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

April is the time of year the golf course begins the transition from the overseeded winter ryegrass to the underlying Bermuda grass. The goal is to slowly remove the ryegrass and promote the growth of the Bermuda grass while still providing good golf course conditions in May and early summer. The process of transitioning from the winter ryegrass to summer Bermuda grass involves many steps that actually start in September and last until the Bermuda grass is healed in July. Seed rates have been greatly reduced over the years to provide less competition between grasses. Overseed preparation is significantly reduced to prevent injury to Bermuda grass before seeding even occurs. Irrigation is monitored very closely to prevent injury to the Bermuda grass in late spring as the temperatures start to rise. If the ryegrass is watered too heavily, the underlying Bermuda grass gets weaker and declines. If the ryegrass is not watered enough, the salts build up in the soil, also leading to Bermuda grass decline. A mix of chemicals are applied starting in March to weaken the ryegrass. This reduces competition and allows the Bermuda grass to come out of dormancy more easily. A different chemical is then used in May to completely remove the ryegrass and poa to allow the Bermuda grass a chance for full recovery. Fortunately, this transition program has led to better and better conditions each summer. Last summer during the greens renovation project, the fairways transitioned so well that no areas required sprigging, a huge change from previous years when extensive sprigging was required across many fairways.

Golf Advisory Co-chair Eileen Buskirk 206-450-6146 SCOVgolfadvisory@gmail.com Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3

The Golf Advisory functions as the liaison between the golf leagues, the residents and the Director of Golf Operations and Golf Course Superintendent. It was designed as a forum for resident and nonresident golfers to “express their needs, concerns and desires.” By that very description, the Golf Course Superintendent often spends the hour of the meetings listening to a litany of complaints. Not an enviable position. The past year has been challenging for everyone, especially Mike. Between the changes brought on by the Greens Reconstruction Project, the loss of experienced maintenance workers and the impact of COVID restrictions, there hasn’t been a lot of upside for him. With the change in weather, the promise of rain and new growth, we’ll see the course morph into the one we dreamed about when the work all started. Until then, let’s thank Mike for all he does when we see him and point out the good.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, April 2021

Good news for Clay Club members. Meetings will resume on the first Thursday of the month. The April 1 meeting will be held at 1 PM on the Kiva Patio. Wearing masks and social distancing will be required and appreciated. We have much to discuss, so please come. Pictured are Bob Arms, John Grandner and Barb Peterson who are helping with a clay delivery. All 1,600 pounds of clay were unloaded and shelved in the storage room for members to purchase as needed. Along with that, dry glazes and chemicals were delivered and stored. A total of six members worked on the delivery. We all appreciate the effort involved for this great convenience. At this time, we regret that we are still unable to hold orientation for those wanting to join the Clay Club. We are hopeful that later this year we will again be able to welcome new members into our club.

The Sewing Room has been busy and in full operation for most of this year. We have new members joining the various sewing clubs, and new projects being done. Not all of the sewing clubs actually do “sewing.” If you’d like to hang out with other wonderful people, do look at the various club articles under the Thimblelenas umbrella. You can actually join any of our clubs and not sew. The Tapestry Club changed its name this year to show they are more inclusive of other fiber arts, not just tapestry. We have windows outside of the Sewing Room which are changed monthly. Take a look every month and see what the clubs have been up to. To join or learn more about our clubs, stop in the Sewing Room during any listed club time when a monitor is available. See you there.

Do you like to sew but aren’t up for a complicated project? Do you want to participate in sewing projects that benefit others in need? Casa Amigas is for you. We sew simple patterns like pajama bottoms, capri pants, sleep sacks and crib sheets for children in need. We provide orientation and simple sewing techniques for those who haven’t sewn in awhile. Would you like to learn how to serge? We also provide orientation and instruction on our sergers. Would you like to join others who enjoy sewing and have a fun time while doing so? We are the group for you. We’ve continued to sew and serge throughout Covid and look forward to getting totally back to normal as soon as possible. Come join us and see what fun we have. Cheer Bears

Thank you for all of you who have been supporting our group working at home and in the Sewing Room. We sent out 50 Cheer Bears to new homes this month, and we are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with love and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Nothing has really stopped us this year. We are sure happy to find that our minds are still intact as we feel spring in the air and vaccinations in our arms. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward in joy with caution and excitement. Summer is just around the corner. Reaching out to hug you all. We are still meeting to put all our love in the little bears we create and children love. Sign in and come join us to complete our task. Machine Embroidery

This month features member Ed Lindahl. As inspiration, Ed saw a high-quality silver belt buckle at a tribal arts fair, at UArizona twelve years ago. After a training class taught by established club members, Ed decided to replicate the buckle. Ed Lindahl’s silver belt buckle. He used the overlay method of two pieces of 16-gauge sterling silver, depicting an elk antler and elk tracks. The top layer was cut out using a jeweler’s saw. The two remaining pieces were soldered together and polished. A “soccer goal post” and hook, made of silver wire, were soldered onto the reverse side to catch and secure the belt. The relief antler and tracks were roughed up and treated with acid to oxidize them and create the contrast. Ed nailed it. Members: Shop hours have reopened mornings and some afternoons as monitors are vaccinated. COVID precautions remain in place. Wear a mask and limit numbers.

Although the Astronomy Club will remain closed through the end of our season at the end of May, we are anxiously awaiting the return to normality when we resume fully in October. With more and more of us getting vaccinated, the future is looking very hopeful. The biggest news in space this past month was the successful landing of the Perseverance rover on Mars. Perseverance is the most sophisticated rover ever and is equipped with its own helicopter that will make history’s first-ever helicopter flight on another planet. This is no small feat given that the atmosphere on Mars is only 1% as dense as ours on Earth, and the fact that Mars is over 127 million miles from Earth, requiring the helicopter to fly autonomously.

Our April selections are both fiction, by 20th Century writers Frank O’Connor and Nadine Gordimer. Meetings are currently via Zoom. When we start our next club year in October, we look forward to gathering in person.

Perhaps we can discover how he managed to reach 101 by reading this excerpt from the late Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “I Am Waiting.” Think about what you might be waiting for and how you can help it happen. “…I am waiting for my number to be called / and I am waiting / for the Salvation Army to take over / and I am waiting / for the meek to be blessed / and inherit the earth / without taxes / and I am waiting / for forests and animals / to reclaim the earth as theirs and I am waiting / for a way to be devised / to destroy all nationalisms / without killing anybody / and I am waiting / for linnets and planets to fall like rain / and I am waiting for lovers and weepers / to lie down together again / in a new rebirth of wonder…” Writing poetry is an exploratory adventure. Cultural & Social Democratic Club Richard Kopp 520-342-6633 richardkopp@mac.com Second Sat., 1 PM, Activity Center/Navajo (meetings are suspended during the pandemic)

How can we talk with people we don’t agree with? This question may seem silly in these times of polarized politics. But at our Saturday, April 10, 1 PM, Zoom meeting, our guest speaker Richard Gilman will help us consider “Ten Principles to Unite America.” Not, he says, that we all should be of one mind. But we should have open minds. Mr. Gilman is a thoughtful observer, starting his newspaper career here with the Arizona Daily Star and moving on to The New York Times and Boston Globe. Retired back to Tucson now, he’s spent the last three years listening, learning, linking together the experiences and ideas of people in four states across the country. And on April 10, he will take us through four uncommon steps toward finding common purposes for our state and nation. Even with people we don’t agree with.

This month’s featured dog is Hazel, a 12year-old cattle dog owned by Paul Jensen. As a puppy, she chased a rabbit into a culvert and got stuck in the pipe. Paul had Hazel. to pull her out by her tail. She never did that again. About a year ago, she alerted Paul and Kim West to a rattlesnake in the backyard and was wise enough to stay well away from it. She enjoys chasing the ball and greeting other dogs on her daily walks. Hazel has a gentle, loving spirit, and Paul and Kim are blessed to have her in their life. April is cactusin-bloom month. Take a walk around your neighborhood and see the lovely cactus flowers in bloom. The roselike flowers of cacti, which are contrastingly delicate and beautifully colored, produce edible although

sometimes not too palatable fruit. Transplanting is usually necessary since cacti seldom occur naturally in desired landscape locations. Although they can be transplanted year-round in southern Arizona’s lower elevations, quicker reestablishment can be expected from March through October. Warmer temperatures favor active root growth and, consequently, quicker establishment of the transplant. Bach’s Greenhouse Cactus Nursery’s website www.bachscactus. com is a great place to get all your questions about cactus answered. Exercise Aqua Tone Marcia Polley 520-818-9073 Irmel Wheeler 520-334-0957 (cell) irmel5596@gmail.com Tue., Thu., Sat., 8 AM, AFC/Pool

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band (you’ll need to bring your own). A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Arthritis Water Pres. Sherry Olivier sherryolivier55@gmail.com Sec. Joy Sawyer joymaesawyer@comcast.net Mon., Wed., Fri., 1 PM, Oct.-Apr.; 10 AM, May-Sep., AFC/Pool

Have COVID restrictions decreased your movement and mobility? Our club is getting back into the swing of things and performs 45-minute gentle water exercises designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with balance and range of motion. These are great for those of us with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Although the showers are still closed at the time of this article’s submission, we are thankful that the pool has remained open, and the restroom facilities are open again. Please note: The outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held. Masks are not worn in the pool, but are necessary when waiting in line for entry. Social distancing is always practiced.

Energetic Exercise Donna Clark 970-946-1048 Mon., Wed., Fri., 8-9 AM, Auditorium

You’ll love the way you feel after a good, healthy workout with the friendly folks who gather for Energetic Exercise. Professional instructor, Sally Martinez, has been leading these classes for over 25 years. She is much-loved and respected for the fun and helpful variety of ways she gets us seniors moving. A combination of aerobic/cardio, weight workouts and stretch moves gives us greater strength, endurance, balance and flexibility–all qualities we need to do all the other activities we enjoy. Following the COVID directives now in effect, only 30 are allowed to attend. We are now using SignUpGenius for class registration. Each month members will receive an email with a link to sign up for classes. No late arrivals. We start promptly at 8 AM. Masks worn at all times. Bring exercise equipment for the day and a bottle of water in a small bag please. Unfortunately, we can’t have new members or guests at this time. Resident members only. Unused tickets may be used. New 12-punch cards will be for sale after each class for $30 paid by check or cash (exact amount).

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

To get the full benefits of Pilates a person should understand the basic principles. This may take a little time and patience as the exercises you perform may be different from others you are familiar with, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches us proper balance, breathing, how to focus on your core (your abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to another results in your developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach mat Pilates classes, and they modify many of the moves for us, if necessary. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class. Call Mary.

Class fee is $10, cash, no change given. Masks must be worn during class. Bring your own equipment. Sign up with SignUpGenius.
