Our MISSION as the SCVCAI Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Vistoso as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Onward and Upward by Robert Hefner As I write this article the votes on the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) project are yet to be counted. But as you read it the outcome will be known. Whatever the outcome, this past year has been exciting and somewhat tragic for our community. The level of volunteerism and involvement in the AFC project, both for and against the project, has illustrated how active our residents can become in our community. While no proposal is ever going to receive unanimous approval, healthy discussion and debate generally lead to the correct outcome. The level of rhetoric and actions by some in our community on the AFC project has been unbecoming and out of character of our community. I only hope that we can now put all of that behind us and return to the friendly and homogeneous community we have all come to love and respect.

The Year in Review by Bob Mariani

Now that the vote on the AFC is history and the Board election has taken place I want to take this opportunity to review some of the Association activities in Sun City Vistoso over the past year. Every year at least a few projects are completed in the community. During the past few months, we’ve seen new paint, tile and carpet installed in Catalina Vista; tee box signs installed on the golf course; the golf course bunkers were rebuilt among other projects. As a result of continual refinement to our project management process, these and many other smaller projects were completed well within budget and in a timely manner. Of course the largest project was the planning process for the AFC. Although no physical changes took place in the community in regard to the AFC, there were countless hours of volunteer and staff time dedicated to development and communication of the proposed project. Expenditures were also necessary as a part of this planning process yet the Board was careful to approach these in a very frugal manner. The alternative to the approach that was taken would have resulted in an expenditure well in excess of $100,000 for complete architectural plans. The approach used was at a cost of $15,000. In addition to the various projects that were completed, many actions were undertaken that benefit the Association. For example: a Communication Committee was formed to help improve communications with the membership; a committee recruiting program was continued and enhanced in order to encourage more residents to become involved; an Emergency Preparedness Committee was formed to develop a plan for the Community; Town Council members were invited to attend the Board Meetings on a rotating basis so that Town updates could be received and the Town/Association relationship could be enhanced; the preapproved landscape contractor policy was amended to streamline approval for common area maintenance and an Active Health Committee was formed to develop health and wellness programs. In addition to the above, many improvements were made in Administration, golf, Café, marketing and other areas of operation including many cost saving measures. All of these improvements and actions, that are outlined above, will play a role in enhancing an already excellent community.

Community Assistance Committee needs a driver with ability to back up 12-foot trailer delivering aluminum cans to scrap yard, especially during summer months. The Architectural Review Committee, in addition to regular duties, is also tasked with making changes to the Development Standards. A number of revisions were approved by the Board of Directors at the February 28 meeting. The following is a brief description of those revisions. Please refer to the Development Standards for complete information. 1. “For Rent” signs are permitted. Section II.F.3 2. Clarification on length of time that seasonal lighting and decorations may be displayed. Section II.G.8 and Section II.Q.I 3. Flag pole permitted in rear yard. Section II.I.1 4. Clarification of awning sizes. Section II.J.2.c 5. All window screens shall be the same color. Section II.K.1 6. Partial window replacement requirements. Section II.N.2.d 7. Eliminated front yard tree requirement. Section II.Q.3.b 8. Removed paint scheme #8. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. In March we delivered 460 pounds of aluminum cans which netted the CAC $313. Fiscal year-to-date we have received a total of $2,567. The Community Assistance Committee is an Association sponsored group which operates the Loan Room. It is located at the end of the Cart Barn and provides Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

equipment for Sun City residents for temporary medical needs, beds for adults and children, tables and chairs for parties and some equipment and toys for children. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Reservations can be made for needed items by calling 917-8052 or 825-3711 ext 128 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 8-9 AM or at the Loan Room when it is open. The Loan Room is funded through donations, profits from recycling your aluminum cans and the annual Pancake Breakfast.

At our recent ILR Course, we learned from the UofA professionals that the average Arizona person uses 102 gallons of water/day. For a family of two this averages out to 6,205 gallons/month. Since your water bill gives your usage in thousands of gallons, this is a metered usage of six thousand gallons/month. Oro Valley Water Utility says an elderly family of two uses about seven thousand gallons/month. To conserve water, look first for leaks. Get a dye package from Home Depot or Ace Hardware and drop a little in your toilets. If the water in the bowl slowly changes color, you have a leak. Look at your water meter when you aren’t using any water. If you see a slowly rotating disc or wheel, you have a leak. If you don’t see anything moving, turn on a hose and you will see which one will move when you do have a leak. Ballots were tallied Tuesday, March 27. There were 2,229 ballots cast. The newly elected Directors are: Janice Fischer and Steve Knapp, both three-year terms. The question to approve the renovation and expansion Aquatic & Fitness Center failed with a 1229 opposed and 994 in favor. The question to approve a one-time assessment of $767 to fund the Aquatic & Fitness Center renovation/expansion failed with 1233 opposed and 984 in favor. When the Landscape Committee developed a plan for the first section of Rancho Vistoso (corner of Del Webb down to Big Wash bridge), the plan included turning the side to the right, as you go down hill, back to desert. This would make it similar to the land it abuts and like some of the other areas along Rancho Vistoso. It was felt there was no need for our community to continue to pay to have this area maintained as a landscaped area. The Committee presented the plan and it was approved by the Board of Directors. It included removal of some nonnative plants and decorative rock, planting new native shrubs, other plants and a planting of wildflower mix. The plan calls for watering the new plants to get them established and then turning off the water forever. After that, whatever happens, happens. If a few plants die, they will be removed. There will be new volunteer plants. The wildflowers will set seed after blooming and we will enjoy the result for years, some years more than others, depending on the rains. The area will not be cleaned up after the flowers bloom like residences must be. This is now becoming a natural desert. Our Common Area Maintenance staff and our committee hope to continue this approach for some other sections along the desert side of Rancho Vistoso. If you own a property that had pretty wildflowers in bloom, they have probably now ceased to be beautiful. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until they finish blooming, at which time they need to be removed. It is now time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus or flowers. Trim any trees or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street and remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front or street-facing side yards, no matter how cute they may be. Winter residents need to have their yards maintained during the summer months so the home looks cared for while the homeowner is away. Be sure to notify Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you while you are gone. Please continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

A Posse squad normally has two squad leaders. When longtime Posse member and squad leader Dexter Jones retired, Marian Horsley was left to organize Squad A alone. That recently changed when Pat Monson volunteered to take Dexter’s place. Thank you, Pat. The Strategic Projects Committee met on March 7 and approved the final draft of its recommendations for Board Committee Organization and Management. The report was submitted to the March Board Study Session. The SPC also began organizing two additional projects submitted by the Board. Our next regular meeting is Wednesday, April 4, 1:30 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui. Tipster Editorial

buildings and many other assignments. Here is some history of the monitors before they became monitors. Some were managers, business owners, school principal, nurse, mailman and technology executive, to just name a few. They soon discovered that they missed the everyday interaction with people, and they don’t mind working hard for their own community. SCV residents make up 98% of the monitor team. In closing, I would like to point out that when you enter a facility room the chairs and tables are set up and cookies, coffee, water etc are out. All of these things were done by a monitor and not by magic. I hope that the community has a better appreciation of the monitor team.

Admittedly at a football game when the wave comes around to my section, I smile a bit and join right in on the fun usually adding a woooo for good measure. Our community has recently been in a contest of sorts, with the vote on the Aquatic & Fitness Center, but we now know the results. It’s time to move onward and upward with our projects, and goals and as a community work together. We’ve worked through the process, we’ve perhaps agreed to disagree, but in the end when we walk past each other let’s be friendly and wave (and this time I probably won’t add the woooo.) Today I would like to focus on the monitor team, of whom I am very proud. There are presently 20 monitors. The total number of hours per year of monitor coverage for facilities is approximately 22,840 hours. A monthly work schedule is composed by me and given to them. The monitors greet you as you enter a facility. They keep the buildings tidy by cleaning, filling supplies, keeping inventories, setting up rooms for events or meetings, making sure that residents only enter our Sun City Vistoso Tipster, April 2012

Just a reminder that the Pro Shop will close at 3 PM on Sunday, April 8, for Easter. I have been noticing a lot of cigarette butts on the course and in the parking lot areas. Please be courteous and deposit your cigarettes into your own ashtrays or the receptacles provided for you. We would like to keep Sun City Vistoso as clean and beautiful as possible. Please stop by our fully stocked Pro Shop and check out our wide variety of merchandise. We have new and used golf clubs, golf balls, men’s and women’s clothing, animal head covers, sunglasses, wide brimmed hats to keep the sun off of your ears, golf shoes, etc. Annual pass holders receive 30% off and residents receive 15% off (excludes sale items and golf balls). Since the weather is getting nicer and the days are longer, please remember that if you are a walker or a person driving your golf cart on the golf course (enjoying the views) there will be golfers still out on the golf course. One of the toughest challenges on maintaining a golf course is accomplishing many tasks with only a small number of employees. The maintenance crew is not only responsible for maintaining the grass, but also traps, sprinkler systems, pump station, ponds, desert and numerous other items. Most golfers are unaware of the amount of work that goes into golf course maintenance, but the 9-Hole Men’s Golf Club has been volunteering their services to the maintenance department for several years. They wanted to help on the golf course so they organized volunteers to fill divots on the tees and fairways. Over time they have created a system where these volunteers have each adopted their own hole. These people not only repair the divots, but also fix the ball marks on the greens and some even rake the traps when necessary. The work that this club accomplishes throughout the week has freed up at least two maintenance employees to concentrate on other aspects of the golf course. This directly leads to even better maintained golf course without added expense. The golf course maintenance department also gets volunteers from other clubs that help with marking the hazards for tournaments, painting the yardages on cart paths, and helping with the weeds around the desert edges. The maintenance department would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for all the members who donate their time and energy to help make this one of the best maintained courses in Tucson. Bob Mariani reported that outside golf revenues are increasing as the weather improves. Fiscal YTD rounds including Golf Now and nonresident are 3,855 with revenue of $114,735. This helps our golfing members by keeping our golf fees as low as possible. Also discussed was the goal to increase revenue in the future by having more tee time days. Currently, only Friday, Saturday and Sundays have tee times with shotguns the other four days. The first step to achieve this would be to move the maintenance day and make Monday a tee-time day. All clubs are discussing changing their names to incorporate “The Views”. Having a course name and a different club name are confusing to both the AGA and AWGA. Arrival and check in is one-half hour prior to allow the Pro Shop to confirm/adjust pairings. The club meets once monthly on the second Thursday after golf in the Social Hall/Navajo. The yearly Club Championship Tournament will begin on Thursday, April 5 and will continue each Thursday culminating on April 26. We will have two champions this year, a low net and a low gross winner. A Burger Bash will follow at which time awards will be presented. Our last Bash of this season will be Wednesday, April 25. March was full of tournaments. We hosted “Golf for the Cure” the 18 and 9-Hole lady golfers and tennis players. We raised money for the Susan G. Komen Southern Arizona. The annual “Guys & Dolls Tournament,” hosted by the 9-Hole Men’s Club, was played on Thursday, March 8 and was a great day of fun and food. Our Invitational was played on March 22, hosting several golf clubs from the Tucson area. Thanks to Sharon Heaps and all members who made this event a huge success! Election of officers for the 2012-2013 season were held with the following results: Items for the “Golf is a Beach” Invitational 2012 Pres., Sharon Heaps; with Pres. Walking the Red Carpet by Jackie Alger

Imagine donning your classiest clothes, stepping into a stretch limo and then walking the red carpet with all the celebrities at the recent Grammy Awards. That is what Sun City Vistoso residents Paul and Shirley Chorney did when their daughter, Linda Chorney, was chosen as one of the nominees for Best Album. The Chorneys arrived in Los Angeles on the weekend of the awards and had a chance to experience much of the excitement. One time they sat in on a recording session, where Linda performed for a Nashville producer. Then it was Sunday, time for the glamorous Event. The day started before noon, when the proud parents attended preaward ceremonies, where they walked the non-celebrity red carpet, while Linda strode the main one. For the major program of the evening, with Shirley in heels, they had to walk to The Staples Center. Even with VIP seating, they were located in the back. Although Linda did not win a Grammy, just being there with their exceptional daughter, who, at age 51, was able to break into this youth-dominated musical world, was thrilling. By the end of the evening, both Paul and Shirley were exhausted. Asked if the Chorneys themselves had musical backgrounds, Shirley said that her mother and aunt had been opera singers, and she had been a classical pianist and teacher. During the 1950s she even had a radio program on the Providence, RI public broadcasting station. Paul, she added, has a marvelous voice. In fact all four of their children have beautiful voices and they play musical instruments. Only Linda pursued music as a career, writing and singing her own songs. Although most of you will never experience an evening like the Chorneys had, you can always put on your best duds, listen to Linda Chorney’s CD “Emotional Jukebox” and dream. The OVPD (Oro Valley Police Dept.) and the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation are sponsoring the successful Dispose-A-Meds Program in SCV. Rowena has been accepted into the Signature Status of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. This class is earned by a Juried Member who has been accepted in five SAWG designated juried shows in addition to the designated show used to obtain Juried Member status. SAWG has over 400 members and sponsors workshops of professional artists several times during the year. The gallery is located on the northeast corner of River and Craycroft. Sun City Vistoso poet-photographer Patty Whitley is having an exhibit at Western National Parks Association, 12880 N. Vistoso Village Drive. The exhibit, aptly entitled “Poetography in the Parks”, features photos taken by Ms. Whitley on her travels. The photos, mostly depicting scenes in our national parks, are accompanied by poems composed, at Ms. Whitley’s invitation, by fellow members of the Sun City Vistoso Poets Corner. The public is welcome to view the framed display throughout the month of April and to also attend a gallery reception Saturday, April 14, 3:30-5 PM.

Perhaps you have noted watercolor paintings exhibited without glass or Plexiglas. They are creations from Robert Jennette’s class, where watercolor canvas is used. The final painting is sprayed with a fixative several times to give it protection without glass or Plexiglas. One is able to see the depth of color without glare. Watercolor classes will resume for painters in the fall, so plan to join. “One becomes in time so sensitive to color harmony that the instant one puts on a false spot of color, it hurts, like the wrong note in music,” William Merritt Chase. February’s 8-ball billiards tournament was won by George Riley, one of the original members of the Billiards Club who took first place out of 12 players. Way to go George. There was a good gathering for the potluck supper afterwards. The league play and club championship are nearing completion. The evenly matched competitors will make for a close finish in both events and everyone is having a good time at the competition. Hope some of you had a chance to see and hear Luis Alberto Urrea at the Tucson Festival of Books. April 2 we’ll be discussing The Devil’s Highway, his passionate but factual account of crossing our border with Mexico. May 7 we’ll dissect Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian, a historical mystery novel that centers on the quest to find Dracula’s tomb. The book has been described as “a sumptuous quest-novel with an intelligent woman as protagonist and narrator”, a “scholarly intrigue and globe-trotting adventure”, as well as “a thoroughly impressive and entertaining debut, epic in its scope, deeply human in its concerns.” We expect to finalize selections for a new reading list, effective June, 2012, at our April meeting. Here in the desert we need to protect our pets from many natural dangers: cactus, bobcats, javelinas, coyotes, rattlesnakes and poisonous toads. Fido’s Friends will be offering Colorado River toad aversion training by professional trainer Jay Smith in late April or early May. Colorado River toads are highly toxic and even deadly to dogs who lick or bite these toads. They appear in great numbers after heavy rains in the late spring and during the summer. If you are concerned about your dog coming in contact with a toad, consider having your dog aversion-trained to keep him from ever approaching a toad. The Photo Workshop Club emphasizes education and the sharing of experience in both photographic composition and technical skill. All sessions offer a wide range of techniques that can be applied regardless of equipment and skill level. Photo Workshop April 4, Topic: It’s a Wrap: The final step with your images is usually printing, preparing a slide show, emailing or uploading to the web. This how-to session begins with re-sizing, preparation for the output media, and includes how to show your images on your TV. There will also be a presentation on printing, matting and framing images.

What a great quilt show it was! The rooms were filled with onlookers both days. On Tuesday, April 17 (note this is the third Tuesday) there will be a demo featuring a thumb pincushion that stirred a lot of interest at the quilt show. Kathy Garver, a Sun City resident won the hand On Tuesday, April 24, applique quilt made by the SCV Quilt Club. there will be a display of all the mini quilts from our Art Quilt group. The Most Beautiful Elder Hula Group (Nani Loa Kupuna Hula Halau) hails from SaddleBrooke, where they started four years ago. Their instructor is Glenda Fredericks, who lived in Hawaii and took lessons from Lani Lee and her mother Tiki. Tiki danced in the days when Bob Hope entertained the troops and these are the dances that the group performs. The musician is Lani Lee.

It is again that time when some of our members begin to make summer plans. Before you leave, please remove your projects from our studio. We will need the shelves and space for our members who will be working while you are away. We have enjoyed several busy months in our studio. The workshops have been great. Several members of the club show off the beautiful masks worn at the Mardi Gras party. Starting April 1, the water volleyball hours of play change to the summer schedule of 2-4 PM on Sundays and Thursdays. Wallyball hours remain the same throughout the year. Members enjoyed a Mardi Gras get-together in February complete with masks, beads, jambalaya, kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cake, hurricane drinks, and lots of other delicious food. Our next gathering for all members will be Sunday, April 15, 4:15 PM, Desert Oasis immediately following Sunday water volleyball. Members are asked to bring an appetizer or dessert. Beverages will be provided by the club. There is no cost for members and guests are $5 pp. Come join in on the fun.

Following our very successful collaboration with Sun City Vistoso photographers, members of the Poets Corner have been writing more poems inspired by pictures. These photos, mostly snapshots of scenes in our national parks, were all taken by our own poet-photographer, Patty Whitley, who kindly invited us to participate in her exhibit. The framed photos and accompanying poems will be hanging on display throughout the month of April at Western National Parks Association, 12880 N. Vistoso Village Drive. The exhibition is appropriately entitled “Poetography in the Parks”. Meet our poet-photographer and contributing poets at a gallery reception Saturday, April 14, 3:30-5 PM, or simply visit the exhibit.
