Association News From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. Getting the Message Out by John Wilson “The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” –George Bernard Shaw One comment I’ve heard occasionally is that the Board needs to “improve communication” with the community. Effectively communicating with approximately 4,000 residents can be a challenge. I can assure you that we are exploring new approaches by which such communication might be facilitated, and you will be hearing more about that in the near future. So how is the best way to get information to the residents of SCOV? A very large majority of residents have signed up to receive the weekly email newsletter, “This Week in SCOV” (TWISCOV), sent out by our General Manager, Mr. Mark Wade. If you are not among them, I urge you to sign up for it at the SCOV website (www.suncityorovalley. com). Many who do not receive TWISCOV electronically get a hard copy, available at various places in our community. Surely, TWISCOV is a useful communication mechanism, and that is why I am periodically contributing what I hope will be timely comments for inclusion in TWISCOV. If you have a question or concern, please contact me at wilsonjend1961@gmail.com, and I will address it in a future issue of TWISCOV, respond directly or direct your inquiry to someone who might better respond to that inquiry. “Little effort is needed to create a rumor, but a much greater effort must be made to deny it.” –Eraldo Banovac Certainly one important purpose for communicating is to quash unfounded rumors that arise. If unchecked, these can cause unnecessary dissension and confusion within our community. If you hear a rumor, whether it sounds outlandish or not (and believe me, I’ve heard some dandies), please ask for the source of that information. If it seems unreliable, is just “I heard” or “someone said,” maybe you might want to check into it further. Or please let me know, and I will address it directly in TWISCOV or, if more appropriate, by a personal email response. Thank you for giving these remarks your consideration.

It’s About that Time Again About 35-40% of our residents will be leaving for cooler country very soon. We had snow clear down here at the end of February so no need to be in a hurry. I know from personal experience that the snow can fly clear until Mother’s Day or later up north. If you are among those who will start their annual migration, I wish you well and hope your summer is full of safe travels. Please remember to arrange for your home to be taken care of in your absence. This past year, the Association’s Community Services Coordinator’s office sent out 1,699 courtesy notices. This number is slightly up from the previous year by 8%. The landscaping around your home will need continued care, and everyone who remains on property throughout the summer appreciates the community looking good all year. It is handy if someone checks on the inside of your home as well. Be sure Administration has your emergency contact information just in case we need to contact you about your home during the summer. I have had to contact a resident who was in such a hurry to get out of town that they left their home with the doors unlocked and the garage door open. I’m sure glad we were able to get ahold of them by way of their emergency contact number. If you are remaining in the community for the summer, I look forward to seeing you. Many activities will still be going on, so be sure and read both the Tipster and my weekly email, “This Week In Sun City Oro Valley” (TWISCOV). If you are not signed up to receive TWISCOV, please stop by the Welcome Center and the staff can help you get signed up. Also, remember to drink plenty of water and put on your sun blocker. If you are aware of residents who live alone, we appreciate neighbors who take the time to check in on each other to make sure we’re all OK. It’s one of the things that makes this community so wonderful. Wherever you are this summer, please remember to beware of scams. They are everywhere, and many target our generation. We see it on the news with regularity. Let’s be sure it is not us on the news, because we have taken extra caution when approached with “opportunities.” Safe and happy summer to all of you.

Distinguished Service Award Recipients: Jack and Sally Evert By Ted Hood

he Board of Directors voted unanimously T to honor Jack and Sally Evert as the 2019 recipients of the Sun City Oro Valley Distin-

guished Service Award. Both Jack and Sally have demonstrated extraordinary volunteer service for the betterment of SCOV. Jack and Sally enthusiastically embrace the guiding principles of SCOV. They are well informed on key community and financial planning issues and promote intellectual and service programs. Jack and Sally go beyond just serving, they have served with a passion for over 17 years for the continued well being of our community. Jack has served on the Board of Directors from Jack and Sally Evert 2008-2011 and was appointed to the Board to fill a vacancy in 2018. Jack also chaired the Long Range Planning Committee, Properties Committee, Government Affairs Committee and the Chalk Creek Committee. Jack has also been a member of Special Projects, ARC, Nominating, Elections and the Prevail Committees. Sally is chair of the ILR Sampler Committee, a member and past chair of the GAC, former member and co-chair of the ARC, and current co-chair of the Future Housing Committee. The Views Golf Club 9 took first for Best Golf Course. In the category of Best Oro Valley Restaurant, The Views Restaurant took 1st. Sun City Oro Valley came in 2nd behind Splendido for Best Active Living Community. Congratulations to the golf course and restaurant for being the best. We already know this, but it’s nice to share the news with Northwest Tucson. The award logo you see above is used in our marketing. SCOV has received other awards as well. In 2018, both the homeowner association and the golf course, were selected as first by the Reader’s Choice, an award presented by the Arizona Daily Star newspaper. Another award from 2018 was from 55places.com, a website for active adult living, voted SCOV as one of the most affordable places to live. Awards and recognition is well and good, but the real winners are each of you who are a part of this vibrant, healthy community. Thank you, again, for all you do to make SCOV a wonderful place to live.

I do know that, soon, many of our winter residents will be returning to their other homes. We wish them safe travels. It is also the time that clubs start to vote on new officers/leaders. Remember to turn in the names of new officers and club rosters to Coco Sullivan. If you no longer want to receive messages for club presidents/leaders, you need to go to the SCOV website and remove your name, using your password.

the Seniors For Kids Club which acts to serve needy children. Both Jack and Sally have been members of the Posse for 17 years, and volunteer for events like the Pancake Breakfast, ILR Samplers and the Great Discussions group. Jack’s volunteerism on the various committees has had a direct impact on the SCOV community by improvements to the Chalk Creek erosion problems, installation of the solar panels, revenue produced by the AT&T cellular lease of the Clock Tower, and the establishment of electronic voting for SCOV elections. Sally helped to revitalize the Government Affairs Committee into a viable resource for the community. Most importantly, Jack and Sally totally support each other on their various committee assignments. Jack and Sally Evert didn’t just win the Distinguished Service Award through 17 years of continuous service; they earned it. Congratulations to Jack and Sally Evert.

By doing this, you are being considerate of your neighbors and avoiding any Courtesy Notices sent by the Association. If you are new to our community and have not yet experienced the monsoon season and its ramifications, be aware that weeds, debris and suckers want to take over if not addressed on a consistent basis. Another consideration: if you have not already applied pre-emergent to your property, it is not too late if you make sure to water it in once it is applied. This watering is extremely important to the efficacy of the product. Talk to your landscaper about the different products and their effectiveness in our region. Throughout the year, our office receives many complaints on the condition of landscaping at rental properties. If you depend on a renter to pull weeds, clear yards of fallen plant/ tree debris and cut off any suckers as part of your lease agreement, our experience shows that often a renter does not feel it is a priority. We suggest that you include professional landscaping services as a part of your lease.

Library usage was up from October 2018 through February 2019. In addition to a 6% increase in circulation and a 7% increase in patron visits, the number of online patron visits went up 27%. This last statistic contributed to a 26% increase in completed reserves, or items placed on hold and successfully picked up. It is heartening to see this strong increase in the number of patrons who have learned how to take advantage of our many online capabilities. For those of you still hesitating, did you know that when you have an account with the library you can access our database from the comfort of your own computer or device to accomplish the following? • Search the library catalog • See a list of new items • Place items on hold or cancel hold items • See what you have checked out and the due dates • Create a wish list of items for future checkout • See a history of all items you have checked out which can be sorted by author or title Stop by the library for information on getting started.

ter your designated time impacts the person waiting behind you and simply isn’t fair. Cardio machine time limits are put in place for a reason, as they ensure the opportunity for every exerciser to make the most out of their time at the gym, especially during peak hours. You want to train smarter, not longer, so if you’re hopping on the elliptical with a 30-minute time limit, make the most out of the time you have by kicking up the intensity with intervals. On Friday, April 12, 1 PM, Auditorium, the Active Health Committee is hosting a presentation on macular degeneration by Robert Snyder, M.D. Dr. Snyder joined Tucson Eye Care in 2015. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained eye surgeon with expertise in modern cataract surgery. Since 1998, Dr. Snyder has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in America” and as one of the “Best Docs” in Tucson, AZ. For his work he has received numerous awards for the prevention of eye diseases. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million Americans – more than cataracts and glaucoma combined. Dr. Snyder will discuss the two types of macular degeneration and the latest in treatment and prevention of this condition.

For the next several weeks the Activity Center Renovation Committee will be finalizing and prioritizing the requirements for the renovated Activity Center. The architect will also be meeting with the stakeholders to better understand their suggestions. The architect will also be consulting with other design specialists to insure the final product meets our current and future needs. Use of the gym and pool continues to grow as residents realize how convenient it is to use the clean, well-equipped work-out and recreational facilities. The number of visits to the AFC has more than doubled from 6,069 recorded visits during January of 2008 to 12,694 in January of this year. Discussion of recommendations for further improvements took place at the March meeting of the AFC Committee. These included adding additional equipment, such as another a rowing machine to the gym and an additional hot tub to the pools. Some usage restrictions were also discussed, since it became necessary to sanitize both the main pool and the Desert Oasis pool due to foreign matter found in the pools. Age and maturity of children who are guests was considered and will be discussed at the April meeting to determine if further restrictions are needed. Sanitizing the pools requires that they be closed and shock chlorinated, which ls both inconvenient and costly.

Bistro lights will be added on the patio. Permanent infrared heaters are planned for the terrace, as well as an additional sun/shade screen. More portable heaters will be moved to the patio for the busy winter season. Noise abatement solutions for the lounge are in progress. A covered, raised herb garden outside the northeast side of the terrace is on the wish list. We hope to have rotating resident art throughout the restaurant to improve the ambiance. A professional hanging system must be purchased for this project. While not in the current budget, with the introduction of Friends of the Restaurant (FOR,) we hope you will want to help with donations toward these projects. More information will be available as we continue to define FOR in our Food and Beverage Charter.

Questions you asked at the Greens community forums: With the changes to the greens, will irrigation systems need to be moved? Fourteen of the greens will remain within the current irrigation network. Four will have minor extensions (including the putting green) to the existing irrigation system. The green on Hole No. 11, will have a new irrigation system. This new green location will move play and golf balls away from the homes located on the left side of the hole. Is the cost of $1.2M in 2020 dollars a firm number? This cost was developed after receiving budget estimates from three construction firms that do this type of work. Our architect has worked with all three firms on greens projects. There were 25 similar line items detailed in each cost estimate. The budgetary numbers were within 15% or $175K of each other. In December 2019, detailed design drawings in the form of a request for proposal (RFP) will be sent to contractors who do this type of work, and final bids will be requested. Who will be on site to monitor workmanship and supervise greens construction? We have a contract (included in the $1.2M) with Mike Gogel, our golf course architect, to oversee construction work and grass grow-in. He has experience as a contractor who does this type of work and experience as an owner’s representative to ensure that quality and costs of the project are successfully monitored. Our General Manager will have ultimate oversight of the project.

With all the rain we had early this year, weeds are popping up everywhere. When weeds are small, they are easy to remove. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until after they finish blooming, at which time they too need to be removed. Trim any trees that block stop signs or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street, as they also grew during our winter rains. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front yards. Winter residents should be sure that someone maintains your yard during the summer months, so your home looks cared for while you are away. Do notify Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you. Continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

What is an artifact? Statues, depictions, artificial flowers, decorative yard ornaments or other man-made artificial decorations are not allowed in front yards. They may be placed on top of front or street-facing courtyard walls. Refer to Development Standards Section 2.17 xiv.

You are not asked to maintain any of these pieces of the puzzle, your annual HOA payment does that for you. However, you also purchased a fraction of the view that we all moved here for, and the community expects you to maintain that piece of our puzzle. This would not be the case if you purchased a home with nothing or no one around you for miles and miles. But you didn’t. You purchased a piece of our community. Imagine this: picture a puzzle with 2,488 pieces, fully assembled, with one piece missing. You would probably return that puzzle to the store and expect a refund of your purchase price. The Chalk Creek Wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course in addition to threatening homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of inspections to determine the condition of the creek and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee together with HOA staff and experienced experts in these matters participate in the inspections. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our next meeting will be Thursday, April 18.

to purchase for only 13 weeks. It’s a promotion that will last for a few years to encourage our residents and guests to play afternoon times that would be available throughout the year. The Greens Reconstruction Committee has been diligently communicating the progress to the community on the greens project. We ask for your continued support especially from all our community golfers and annual pass holders during the construction period. The schedule for reconstruction of the greens would start in the spring of 2020 through overseeding. We would reopen the entire course and greens in October 2020. However, I just want to be clear that the golf course will not be closed during construction. Once the project begins, the golf course will be open for play as a par 70 with a maximum distance of approximately 5,500 yards. We will be preparing the temporary greens well in advance in order to provide the best quality putting service possible. The greens project is essential to the long-term success of our community and golf course. Thank you for your support.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 April is the time of year the golf course begins the transition from the overseeded winter ryegrass to the underlying Bermuda grass. The goal is to slowly remove the ryegrass and promote the growth of the Bermuda grass while still providing good golf course conditions in May and early summer. The process of transitioning from the winter ryegrass to summer Bermuda grass involves many steps that actually starts in September and lasts until the Bermuda grass is healed in July. Seed rates have been greatly reduced over the years to provide less completion between grasses. Fairways are being rotated to skip overseeding allowing extra time to recover. Overseed preparation is significantly reduced to prevent injury to Bermuda grass before seeding even occurs. Irrigation is monitored very closely to prevent injury to the Bermuda grass in late spring as the temperatures start to rise. If the ryegrass is watered too heavily, the underlying Bermuda grass gets weaker and declines. If the ryegrass is not watered enough, the salts build up in the soil also leading to Bermuda grass decline. A mix of chemicals are applied starting in March to weaken the ryegrass. This reduces competition and allows the Bermuda grass to come out of dormancy easier. A different chemical is then used in May to completely remove the ryegrass and poa to allow the Bermuda grass a chance for full recovery. Overall, the golf course should continue to have better playing conditions during the early part of summer. Any areas that still need to be repaired will be done in June and healed by the middle of July.

Thirty-two teams enjoyed golf, lunch and plenty of prizes and the ever-popular money tree. The event was co-chaired by Patti Thompson and Cathy Morrow and a slew of helpful hands from the club. That’s the thing that is so special about our club; ladies are always ready to pitch in, no matter the tasks. Thank you, ladies. We are in the process of finishing up the President’s Cup matches with only a few left before we congratulate the winner. Our Club Championship was decided the end of March. The mission of the Art League is to create a good-looking exhibit with the works available for a particular show. Good placement, good lighting or a premium spot cannot be guaranteed. The participating artists understand the restrictions of the Activity Center and the Desert Oasis facilities and cooperate fully with the decisions of the Art League. For April, in the Activity Center, the theme is “Up Close.” We are sure this exhibit will intrigue our SCOV community and their guests. The Clay Club will refresh their display in the Desert Oasis. Stop by and see the projects in process and completed projects in the display case. Aleda Haug is teaching a class for members on sculpturing the human body. Participants are learning to sculpture a head or body. Along with the class, she is showing films that illustrate the structure of the human body starting with bone, then the muscles and finally adding the skin. Mem- Coni Arseneau’s completed project bers are replicating this process with their clay sculpture. Class members are learning how complex the human body is and how it changes with movement. The Sewing Room has really been humming lately. As you can see by reading the articles below, there are lots of things being made, and everyone has a good time doing it. Our HQ Sweet 16 quilting machine has been billed as the “best selling sit-down quilting machine.” Regina Bechard gives excellent training on the quilting machine, and its popularity is growing. Any Thimblelenas member can be trained on this machine. Stop any time the room is open to learn more about us. Monitors on duty are always happy to give you a short tour. Seasonal residents and renters are welcome to join us. For your convenience the Sewing Room is open for general use Friday, 9 AM-Noon and 1-4 PM, and Saturday mornings.

Our Casa members have taken on a new project. We will be making sleep sacks. These are wearable blankets and will be made out of fleece for the colder months and of a lighter fabric for the warmer ones. As May nears, our Cheer Bear group is losing its many winter workers as they head back to the cooler parts of the country. We will be suspending our meetings in May. That doesn’t mean that all work will cease, but it will greatly decrease. Our newest project is to make weighted Cheer Bears that were requested by Leslie Chace for the Casa de la Luz hospice facility. The added weight comforts the patients and calms them during their anxious moments. This project will be in conjunction with the Cheer Bears we make that are stuffed with poly fiber fill and donated to the children. It is warming to see the bears are expanding in demand. If anyone would like to join us again in October, mark your calendars for Wednesdays from 1-3 PM in the Sewing Room at the Artisan Center. The club has been busy. We’ve enjoyed having several specialty classes over the last two months. In this photo, our expert member, Michael Knott, is teaching a two-day class to eight members on our lapidary cutting, grinding and polishing machines. We were also able to learn the copper etching process from jeweler, Kristen Haug. She was in town for the Tubac Festival of the Arts. Member, Carolyn Shisler, taught two wire-wrapping classes. Thursday, April 18, Dr. Glenn Schneider from the U of A Steward Observatory, will teach us how his team, using spectrometers and various scientific instruments, searches for habitable planets. Habitable planets, circulating distance stars, can be identified as not being too hot or cold and have the necessary chemical make-up to substantially support life. The Kepler telescope ran out of fuel in October and was an important tool in astronomical planet research. Astronomers are looking forward to NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope due to launch in 2021. The question is no longer, is there life beyond Earth? It’s a pretty sure bet there is. The question is, how do we find it? Today we have confirmed 4,000 exoplanets. There are more planets than stars. There are 100 billion stars in the Milky Way alone and at least 25 billion places that life could take hold and our galaxy is one among trillions. The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is a 336 mile long system of Food and monetary donations for Impact of aqueducts, tunnels, Southern Arizona pumping plants and pipelines, and is the largest single resource of renewable water supplies in Arizona. It is designed to bring about 1.5 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado River to Central and Southern Arizona every year. More than 5 million people, or more than 80% of the state’s population, live in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties, where CAP water is delivered. In response to several requests, a special beginning Hula class will finish out our winter/spring sessions. The class will be held Thursday, April 4, 2 PM, in the Activity Center/Dance Studio. You’ll learn basic hula moves and a short introduction to the “Little Grass Shack” hula. Dancing the hula is very beneficial in developing balance, musicality, upper body grace and fluidity, as well as lower body strengthening. There’s no charge for these two classes; just come and enjoy. If there is interest in continuing the class, six weeks of summer hula will begin mid-June and continue through July. Can it really be April already? The dance season is winding down: classes finished in March with graduation certificates and awards. We had two dances here and other opportunities off campus. Persnickety and Boot Barn saw revenues increase as we shopped for boots, bandanas and blue jeans. Hey that sounds like a good name for a dance! Friday, April 12, the KK are hosting Boots, Bandanas and Blue Jeans. Clear Country will provide the music, Bub’s Grubb will provide, well: the grub. Doors open at 5:30 PM, dancing from 6:30-9:30 PM. Tickets will be on sale in the AC Thursday (members only) and Friday before the dance. It’s also time to think about joining the board. Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, board, noodle, ball and fitness band. Most are available at the pool. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Joseph Pilates once wrote “physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person should understand the application of the basic principles. This takes a little time and patience as the exercises can be different from other forms of exercise. They are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, focus on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to the next results in your developing more strength and stamina. Even your posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach the mat Pilates system and can modify many of the moves for us, if necessary. The Wallyball Club has recently made some improvements including the addition of court time to provide more opportunity for residents to join the fun. This exciting team sport is played with a minimum of six and a maximum of 10 players on the Photo by Summer V court. It can be a fastpaced, intense game that contributes to a good cardio workout. After our cold rainy winter, the warm weather is back. Time to return to the Desert Oasis pool for water volleyball. Although we try to play every week, the 40 degree temps aren’t very inviting. On Sunday, April 7, our club will host the water volleyball team from the Highlands at Dove Mountain. The competition is always fierce for the first few games, but then we mix the teams up for a more social game. If you are interested in playing water volleyball, stop by and watch.

Traditionally, people who contribute to charity itemize deductions and receive a tax benefit. Under the new law, people may be better off using the new, larger standard deduction. If you are 70½ or older, you may transfer up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity tax-free as a QCD, which counts as your required minimum distribution but isn’t added to your adjusted gross income and still get the new, sizable standard deduction against other income.
