From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors howardschulzscov@gmail.com
Greens Coring and Improvement Project by Howard Schultz SCOV will start a very important project later this month, as the golf course greens will be cored and drainage systems installed to ensure that grasses, root systems and reclaimed water can all co-exist in harmony. This is a major project to maintain our golf course asset and home owner values. The BOD approved this project in early 2019. The project is being directed by Mark Wade, our General Manager, to implement for $1.2M dollars. Field construction will start on April 27 by the construction contractor, Pro Turf. Mike Gogel, our Golf Course Designer, will oversee construction progress and cost control. Assisting Mark Wade with project oversight will be Tim Kelley, Michael Kropf, Rick Price and Howard Schulz. Please ask us if you have any questions.
General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080
Community Information Coronavirus – I have been in contact with the Epidemiology Program Manager (EPM) for the Pima County Health Department in discussion about concerns for the SCOV Home Owners Association. We will be following recommendations of the EPM as they relate to operations here at SCOV. The EPM recommended the following website for residents’ additional information about this virus and how to protect yourself: https://webcms.pima.gov/ cms/One.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=527452 The Vote – Thanks to all of you who voted. Your ability to influence the direction of SCOV is manifest through your votes, and I appreciate you contributing your opinions regarding initiatives and who should serve on the Board through your votes. Spring Break Visitors – Every year we have many grandchildren visiting our residents during their spring break. Please remember that only those with driver’s licenses are allowed to drive in SCOV, including golf carts. All guests must adhere to the rules and regulations of the community association. Leaving for the summer – If you will be leaving for the summer, please remember to get someone to care for the exterior of your home. Those who stay year-round appreciate it when your home and yard are well maintained while you’re away. Trend in HOAs – Volunteerism is on the decline in HOAs. As you may or may not know, our HOA uses volunteers in countless arenas. We are seeing an increasing amount of decline in willingness of residents to serve the community through being volunteers and volunteer leaders. Oft times, this requires staff to step in and fill the need. The increased load on staff in turn requires additional hours. The end result is additional staff which translates into higher HOA fees. Please keep this in mind the next time you are invited to volunteer to serve in whatever capacity. We appreciate and can sure use your help. Golf Course Walking and Construction – The walking hours during construction will not change as the golf course will still be open with players playing a slightly shorter course.
Coffee and Conversation Architect’s perspective of “completed” Number 2 green So what actually is going to happen? Each green must be cored to a depth of about 10 to 12 inches. Drainage systems will be installed at the base of the excavations to allow the reclaimed water to move through the root zones. Sand and organic material will be placed above the drain field and graded to final contours before grass sprigs are placed and watered. (Continued on page 5)

McNeill. Though you may not know Barb personally, many of you have had interactions with her – Barbara is that smiling, friendly blond lady frequently seen making people feel so welcome at our Views Restaurant. In her role as chair of our Food and Beverage (F&B) Committee, Barb has played an important part in making The Views Restaurant such a valued amenity in SCOV. Assessing comment cards, welcoming diners, devising decorations, instituting the “Community Table,” and most recently starting a herb garden that will supply fresh herbs to the kitchen – Barb has made these and many more contributions in her F&B Committee role. Her concern for the well-being of staff in the restaurant is widely known, as exemplified by her organizing a fund to assist a staff member who was unable to Barbara McNeill, recipient of the work due to injury in a car accident. 2020 Distinguished Service Award Barb came to SCOV in 1992 and quickly became involved in many activities and committees. For twenty-five years (Board of Directors, continued from page 3) With the new drainage system, Michael Kropf will have the ability to test water leaving the greens and determine the level of salts and other constituents in the new root zones and make necessary adjustments. Many of the greens’ surrounds will receive excavated green soils and will be graded to smoothen steep areas and allow for better maintenance practices. It should also improve the golfer’s ability to walk and play. These areas will be sodded and watered. The first year of grow-in is critical, as the greens and surrounds must establish healthy root zones. Experts recommend no overseed in the new root zone areas during the first year. During construction the golf course will remain open with play directed toward temporary greens, which are currently under construction. You can play a new course without leaving the community. Walking hours will be posted, and all golfers and walkers must stay out of construction areas. There may also be short periods when parts of the course are closed to facilitate construction. Safety is a top priority, so construction equipment will have the right of way, and all others must yield. No exceptions. We will communicate weekly plans regarding when and where construction work is taking place in “This Week In SCOV” (TWISCOV). Planned construction work for the upcoming week will go in the weekly “TWISCOV.” Please make a point to review this information each week. The actual field construction period is expected to finish around July 15, after which watering and SCOV maintenance will continue into September. All residents and golfers are asked to stay off newly constructed areas until the new greens are deemed ready, expected to be in the fall. This is a major project. Sand and materials will be stored in various sites around SCOV to provide the contractor with the most efficient method to access each green. You can expect sand to be stored in our parking areas, which will take advantage of the lower summer usage. In addition, construction materials and equipment will be accessing the

she has been involved in Vistoso Helpful Hands, the organization providing short-term assistance to neighbors in need, the last 19 as chair of that group. She has been an Ambassador since the inception of that program, serves as a member of the Tipster Editorial Committee, has served on the Marketing Committee and as a member of the SCOV Foundation Board, and organizes a monthly luncheon gettogether for women in her neighborhood. Barb is involved in community affairs in various other ways, and has been particularly helpful in recruiting residents to serve in various committee or governance roles, including one of the present members of the Board of Directors. She is a long-time member of the Women’s 18-Hole Golf Club and the Pilates Club. I’ve probably missed some things here but suffice it to say that Barb McNeill has had her finger in a lot of pies in SCOV, and we are all better for that. Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 The Census is Coming! The United States has been conducting a census since 1790, that’s 230 years. The 2020 census will have its share of firsts as well. This census is the first opportunity for households to respond online, by phone or by mail. Here’s some information on the census. April 1 is Census Day, observed nationwide. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of the three ways. When you respond, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020. In April, census takers will begin visiting those who live among large groups of people. Census takers will also begin following up with households that have not yet responded. In the Town of Oro Valley anyone knocking on your door must have a permit, and census takers will be able to show you their permit. In May-July, census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted. By December the Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law. By March 31, 2021, the Census Bureau will send redistricting counts to states. This information is used to redraw legislative districts based on population changes. This information is from the www.2020census. gov website.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Happy Spring When you live in Arizona, sometimes it is hard to figure out what season it is. March rains produced an abundance of wildflowers for all to enjoy this year. Our April community events were cancelled due to the coronavirus. Thank you for understanding the need to protect our residents’ health. Keep an eye on the SCOV website and “TWISCOV” for any events that may be added this spring.
Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours Mon.-Fri., 9-11 AM, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Thanks in Advance Many of you will be leaving our community soon to enjoy the cooler climates of your summer homes. This is a reminder to make arrangements with a yard maintenance company in advance of your departure. Several of you are used to taking care of your own yards while you are here. Keep in mind that weeds grow, bushes and trees grow, and plant and tree debris falls to the ground while you are away. If someone is not attending to these areas in your yard on a monthly basis, your neighbors are the ones who are impacted. Please take steps to have your yards maintained in your absence.

We invite you to stop in and take our “Library art walk.” The SCOV Art League has curated a collection of paintings, photography, clay pieces and sculpture to enhance our walls. I hope you stop by to see these inspiring artworks created by our talented friends and neighbors. In addition to contributions from these capable artists, SCOV residents contribute in many other ways to the success of our Library. Over 50 volunteers open and close the Library five and a half days a week or work in the back room on database entry, covering or repairing books, sorting donations and other tasks. A Friends of the Library board works tirelessly from October through May raising money and providing benefits to our membership. The Woodworking Club builds beautiful shelves, carts, and display stands tailored to our needs. Individual residents give donations large and small, including one resident who funds the purchase of the Tootsie Rolls always on offer at our circulation desk. Residents donate hundreds of books, movies, puzzles and magazines each year for our collections. Grants are provided yearly by the ILR, the SCOV Book Club, and at times, the Sun City Vistoso Foundation. One quirky tradition not found at other libraries is the basket offering citrus fruit picked from trees in our community, free for the taking between about December through April. All this community involvement makes our Library a fun, vibrant and very special place.
Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Getting Ready for Flu Season Proper hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent colds and flu. And it’s easy to do. Start with warm water and anti-bacterial soap. Work the lather for 20 seconds, paying extra attention to fingernails and jewelry. Singing “Happy Birthday” twice is a good way to judge the time. Then rinse and dry your hands. Disposable towels are best so you can use them to turn off the water. This will protect you from putting germs from the faucet right back on your hands. Another easy way to protect yourself is to keep your hands away from your face. Specifically, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. These are the areas where cold viruses gain entry into your system. Keeping your hands away will keep any cold germs on them away as well. If you need to touch these areas, wash your hands before and after. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, April 14, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, April 15, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. This is the case in the U.S. and worldwide. Our guest speaker is Gordon Watson, M.D., of the Pima Heart Associates. Dr. Watson will discuss how atherosclerosis develops and the risk factors for the disease and how to treat them. He will address the current treatments for those already impacted by the disease, but, more importantly, discuss early detection and treatment which can prevent disability and death. Whether you have a history of heart ailment or wish to prevent heart disease, this informative presentation will benefit you. Please join us Friday, April 17, 1 PM, Auditorium. New committee members are welcome.

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Chair Michael Takerian afc@suncityorovalley.com First Wed., 11:30 AM, WC1
We’d like to share some simple health and safety reminders for our residents and guests who use the pool and fitness center. First we’d like to thank you for using the wipe dispensers to wipe down the exercise equipment after each use. We also appreciate all who shower before using the pool and spa. Also, remembering to squeegee your shower area helps others as they enter. In light of our current virus outbreak, we’d like to review CDC health preventative measures. 1. Stay home If you have a cough, fever or sinus condition. 2. Always wash your hands or use alcohol sanitizers. 3. Cover your sneeze or cough into your inner shirt sleeve. 4. Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth. (Washing your hands after being in public places is very beneficial.) By using our good common sense, we can maintain a higher level of healthiness. Thank you so much.

Architectural Compliance Team Chair Don Stewart 618-980-3878 bethsdad81@gmail.com First Fri., 1 PM, WC1
The Architectural Compliance Team (ACT) inspects residential properties to ensure adherence to the Development Standards. All exterior areas of the property are checked. Some examples are walls, gates, fences, paint and stucco, landscaping, windows and screens, flat work, lighting, shutters and shades. Mandatory inspections are done at time of listing the property for sale. Areas not in compliance are listed in the resale demand and compliance report from the title company. Courtesy inspections are done at the request of property owners thinking about selling or those who are just curious about their compliance. No records are kept by SCOV on deficiencies or actions taken on courtesy inspections. The team is staffed by eight resident volunteers and a staff liaison. Meetings are open to all residents with minutes published on the SCOV website.

SCOV pays nothing for the paper directory. The publisher finances it with ad revenue, but as more people use the Internet, fewer businesses buy ads in directories. Let the advertisers know that you appreciate their ads, and keep your fingers crossed for next year. If the publisher can’t continue, we will need to decide if we want to pay for a paper directory ourselves. Did you know our directory is on the SCOV website? Find your neighbors’ names, people from your hometown or whatever you seek. The incremental search box will display results as you type. Are you included in the directory? New homeowners are unlisted by default. To add or update your information, complete the online form “To change your directory listing…” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. You can choose to have certain information unlisted in the paper directory and/or online.

Your overall rating of 98 percent meeting/exceeding expectations indicates the vast majority of you are pleased with your restaurant experience. Remember to stop by for Monday Madness (provided our buildings are open) on the second Monday to see what bargains are to be had. Featured artists for April are Elaine Woods and Bev Koski. Elaine creates sculptured gourds, carving and dyeing the outside, drilling holes, then preparing the pine needles, softening them to a certain pliability to be able to work with them. Elaine also makes silver pendants from the prickly inside of the cleaned gourd, using the lost wax casting method. They look very detailed, lacy and delicate. Bev receives wine and Jack Daniels bottles from friends which she turns into decorative lighted bottles for home decor or for use as bar lights. She also creates wreaths to decorate your door Elaine Woods (left) and Bev Koski (right) or to just hang inside to enjoy and bring color with the changing seasons. In addition, she makes reversible table runners for various seasons, holidays and everyday use.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1; Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/
The Loan Room is a free service to residents of SCOV. You need your current SCOV card to borrow the items you need for visiting family or friends, medical issues or some children’s items. We ask that you return anything you borrow by the designated date, clean and with all the parts together as you received them. The Loan Room is supported by the aluminum cans that you recycle in the blue bins and the annual Pancake Breakfast. With this support we are able to replace items as they wear out. You may make reservations on the website or at the Loan Room up to two months in advance, which can be really important during the busy times of the year. Thank you for your cooperation and great attitude when you work with us.
Long Range Planning Chair Martha Cray marthacray77@gmail.com Second and fourth Wed., 10 AM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon
On March 3 we presented to the Board a Development Sequence Plan for SCOV. It addressed future needs and desires of our residents, and provided a three-phase implementation plan spread over ten years. A copy of the plan is available in the Library. It is also on the SCOV website on our committee web page. We wish to thank the many residents who participated in our data gathering and research and to those who offered ideas, comments and suggestions. The annual review by the Board of our committee’s Charter is currently underway, and our future role remains to be defined. Check the SCOV online calendar for any future meetings.
Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Now What? Spring did get here, and it’s time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus or flowers. With all the rain we had early this year, weeds are popping up everywhere. When they are small, they are easy to remove. If you own a property that had pretty wildflowers in bloom, they have probably now ceased to be beautiful, but they were pretty. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until they finish blooming, at which time they need to be removed. Trim any trees that block stop signs or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street, as they also grew during our winter rains. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front yards. Winter residents should have their yard maintained during the summer months, so the home looks cared for while they are away. Do notify Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you. Continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

The Posse has some incredible volunteers. Vern Petterson is one. He’s been serving on the Posse for 25 years. I recently met Vern and his wife, Rita, and had the pleasure of presenting him with a 25-year certificate and badge. A few weeks ago, a request went out for a volunteer to take the new Posse vehicle to be washed on a monthly basis. Rita called as soon as she read the article. She said Vern was out of town but she knew it was the type of thing he’d really be interested in doing and that he’d call me on Monday. Sure enough, Vern called me and volunteered to handle this for the Posse. Thank you, Vern, for your continued support of the Posse. The Posse is always looking for volunteers. Six hours a year, two 3-hour patrols, is all the commitment we ask. Please join us.
Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values Vice Chair Jack Evert 520-981-3437 jackevert439@gmail.com Second and fourth Fri., 2:30 PM, WC1
After one year of intensive study, we have developed a system for quantifying the degree of view loss when a building addition is made to a neighboring property. If approved by the Board, this system would be invoked when a dispute arises during approval of a building project. A subcommittee will use the procedure to determine the level of view loss and on that basis make a recommendation to the Architectural Review Committee to assist them in their decision to approve or deny the project. The approaches we have studied all stress the value of neighbor-to-neighbor communication. These projects can be very stressful and impactful; a little neighborliness can go a long way toward achieving a final result with which all can be satisfied.
Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1
The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course in addition to threatening homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of inspections to determine the condition of the creek bed and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee together with HOA staff and experienced experts in these matters will conduct an inspection during April. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our next meeting is Thursday, April 16.
What is an artifact? Statues, depictions, artificial flowers, decorative yard ornaments or other man-made artificial decorations are not allowed in front yards. They may be placed on top of front or street-facing courtyard walls. Refer to Development Standards Section 2.17 xiv.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086
We are excited to start the greens reconstruction and practice facility project Monday, April 27. Play will begin on the temporary greens that same day starting on the #10 tee and playing as a par 68 at approximately 5,000 yards. If you have played recently, you saw that the temporary greens are being prepared for the best condition. Please avoid driving or hitting golf balls in this area. Golf Course Superintendent Michael Kropf’s job is to provide the best playing conditions with the available resources and environment. Resources include budgetary items such as water, labor, equipment and the irrigation system. Environment encompasses soil, vegetation and climate. Resources and the environment limit playing conditions. The golf course greens and practice facility renovation is an opportunity to mitigate environmental limitations. A successful renovation should allow our superintendent to use resources more efficiently throughout the golf course. The renovation process is the most challenging aspect of the project. Besides the closure of the regular greens and preparing the course for playable temporary greens, there are construction costs to control and possible lost revenue from all operations. A lot of our research efforts have focused on minimizing course and hole(s) closure time, while ensuring a sustainable product and experience. If everything goes as planned, we are scheduled for a Labor Day weekend opening of the new greens. This date has nothing to do with the overseeding schedule. Concerning overseeding, please attend our community forum, Thursday, April 16, 1 PM, Auditorium, where we will be discussing the reconstruction project and overseeding.
Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
April is the beginning of the long-awaited greens renovation project. The project has been in the planning stages for many years, so it is hard to believe it is about to start. The contractor will be mobilizing their equipment in the parking lot near the cart barn on Monday, April 20. The actual construction will begin on Monday, April 27. The preliminary construction schedule has the practice green, driving range tee, and back nine greens as

the first areas of construction, with the front nine greens being constructed last. Construction materials are going to be based in areas all around the golf course to expedite the process. Sand piles will be in parking lot areas as well as culde-sacs around the community to reduce hauling expenses. Drainage pipes, irrigation supplies and other materials will be around the golf course maintenance area or construction area in the main parking lot. At the end of March, the areas of construction were sprayed with a combination of herbicides to kill the existing turf. Several tournaments are scheduled the first week of April, but the chemicals will take time to show any damage. Initially, the grass will stop growing, but the greens will not change color for several days. The reason the existing grass needs to be killed is that old greens material is going to be used as fill material in other areas around the golf course to reduce expense of disposal. The old grass would act as a contaminate in the new areas where it is placed.
Golf Advisory Chair Beth Allen 520-639-8845 Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3
On Monday, April 27, the golf greens reconstruction will begin. This reconstruction is important not only to the viability of our course, but also to our community. Keeping our golf course healthy is essential to the value of our community and property. Golf can offer many benefits in terms of lifelong health and well being, productive greenspace, economic value and as a facilitator for social engagement. We encourage residents who have not taken advantage of our beautiful course to do so. We have excellent golf pros available for lessons for those people who have not played the game, but would like to try it. As our course continues to look beautiful thanks to Mike Kropf, our Golf Superintendent, each of us needs to be vigilant in repairing our ball divots and making sure we pick up any trash along the way that we might see. If you are a smoker, carry a disposal container for your cigarette and cigar butts. Leaving cigarette and cigar butts on our course fairways or greens is not acceptable. We appreciate everyone’s help in keeping our course one of the best-looking and playing courses in Oro Valley.

Her most recent novel, The Last Year of the War, is the story of two families, one of Japanese descent and one of German descent, who were sent to an internment camp in Texas during World War II. A tale with great resonance for our own times that challenges the very notion of who we are when who we’ve always been is called into question. Many of our residents in SCOV are familiar with Wheels for Kids (WFK), a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. For the past 12 years, this group has put a smile on the face of kids who didn’t think they would ever get to experience the joy of riding their own bike. WFK has over 35 volunteers who refurbish bikes free of charge and see that they are delivered to youth and families who would otherwise be unable to afford their own. Further, a helmet and lock goes Trailer loaded with bikes ready for delivery with with every bike given. From 2007 to 2019, WFK has delivered 2,687 refurbished bikes to charities throughout the Tucson area. “Delivering bikes for WFK is a sure way to start one’s day off right. It makes people happy and improves lives–what a great volunteer opportunity for us.” – Carol Knapp WFK has received grants from the Foundation totaling over $17,000. This year’s request was for $5,000 to purchase helmets, locks and parts used to refurbish donated bikes. The Foundation would not have been able to honor this request without the generous donations from our wonderful SCOV neighbors. Each year in November, the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation initiates its annual fund drive through a letter from the board president sent to all homes in the SCOV Community. If your club or activity group in SCOV is looking for a hand up, contact us at FoundationSCOV.org.

Caryl Thornton is a “senior bloomer” having started to paint at 75. She uses her skills of balance, texture, line and function learned while studying interior design and brings a sensitive understanding of color to her work from being a color analyst for wardrobe, makeup and interiors. She is self-taught and likes to explore a variety of subject matter and techniques. Moving here from Seattle ten years ago after retirement freed her up to paint, line dance, a more active pursuit, and keep our group humming along pleasantly. Currently she and Carol Nagel are co-chairs of the Art League. They may be seen each month hanging the new show at the Activity Center. We invite you to visit, meet Caryl and the others who may be there, watch us work, stay for the 11 AM critique and then return with your own materials.

Knit and Crochet Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 sigridkf@gmail.com Tue., 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge
Join us if you want to help recycle those plastic grocery bags. Jane Fairchild started a program for those interested in crocheting plastic yarn (or “plarn”) into sleeping mats for the homeless. You don’t have to crochet to assist with this project. Help is needed to cut the bags into strips and tie them into yarn. Regular knitters and crocheters continue to meet at this time. It’s been fun to share the space with the plastic bag people. The more the merrier. If you have plastic grocery bags to donate (not the colored newspaper ones), drop them off on Tuesday from 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge, or Jane Fairchild has a box on her front porch, 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. You can also call Jane for further information about the plastic sleeping mat program.

The club uses a polymer clay to create our sculptures. To harden the clay, we bake it in an oven at 275 degrees for 15 minutes per quarter inch of thickness. Since the clay can give off toxic fumes, the club has an oven with an exhaust fan for members to use located in the Art Studio (picture on the left). However, Aleda Haug has researched baking pieces in home ovens. The technique is demonstrated in the picture on the right where the piece is placed in an aluminum pan and covered with baking soda to stifle the fumes.

John Shaw’s project on the left illustrates a style where he hooks in straight lines. John uses a #3 cut of wool which is a smaller width to achieve the look he desires. The top picture is the front of the project and the bottom is the back. Carrie Wiley’s uses free-form stitching on her piece in the picture on the right. On the back of her work, note that her stiches follow the patterns of her design. Carrie uses wider cuts of wool and/or yarn to create her project.

REV·E·LA·TION /ˌrevəˈlāSH(ə)n/ noun 1. a surprising and previously unknown fact, especially one that is made known in a dramatic way. 2. the divine or supernatural disclosure to humans of something relating to human existence or the world. Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 9:30-11:30 AM, WC1
Poets Corner member John Padgett echoes the sentiments of Carl Sandburg who famously stated, “What can be explained is not poetry.” In “No Explanations” he gently reminds us not to guide his thinking regarding the meaning of our poems. “Please, do not tell me why / you wrote your poem. / The words grabbed my / imagination and took me / to another place. / And I rested for a time / as I savored each / vivid phrase. / To tell me what you thought / yanks me away. / Perhaps later, much later, / over beer and pretzels / we can discuss your vision. / For now let me / enjoy my journey.” When you read or hear a poem, you are receiving a gift from the poet. In our weekly workshop, we expect acceptance to include what gives the gift value as well as how it might be enriched. Newcomers are always welcome and encouraged to share the gift of what they’ve written.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all meetings and group activities are on hold for the foreseeable future. When activities resume, we will notify you via “This Week in SCOV” and our club newsletter. At every meeting we accept nonperishable food items or cash donations which go to Impact of Southern Arizona (Catalina Food Bank). So far this year, we have donated 747 pounds towards our goal of 2,020 for 2020. Your help is greatly appreciated. Annual membership dues of $10 can be mailed to Pam Dage at 1766 E. Crown Ridge Way or bring it to a meeting. Our calendar is filled with scheduled speakers and events through December. Everyone, regardless of party affiliation, is always welcome to attend. Dining - Prepare & Share Pres. Debbie Kotlarek 262-899-5810 dlkotlarek@gmail.com VP Sandra Fisher 208-860-3431 sandrafisher2703@gmail.com www.scovprepareandshare.weebly.com This club provides an enjoyable social evening monthly during fall and spring, getting to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Our Mardi Gras celebration on “Fat Tuesday” four dinners in members’ homes (December-March) provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., German, Indian, South American) or get creative with more ambiguous themes, such as “food in movies.” February’s theme was Mardi Gras, with some groups going all-out: King Cake, shrimp Creole, hurricane cocktails and even costumes. But the gathering doesn’t have to be elaborate. Since everyone brings part of the shared meal, the hosts can be spared huge effort. Each dining group decides how to translate the month’s theme into menus. We also have catered events and an occasional summer potluck. Visit our website to see more photos and details. Questions? Please contact a club officer.

The club board has been working hard on our vision to improve the dog park by adding a small dog area. We appreciate all the work members have done to help make this a real possibility. We continue to work with SCOV and the Long Range Planning Committee, as well as other funding sources to make this a reality. We will be adding shade and solar lighting as well. This month we will have our annual snake aversion training. Watch for the announcement on the date and time in “This Week in SCOV” from Mark Wade and in a members’ email alert.

Folk dancing is more fun than a treadmill and healthful exercise for balance, muscle, mind, and mood. For most dances we hold hands in a circle to perform non-gymnastic steps to the enchanting music and rhythms of diverse cultures (including our own). Neither prior experience nor a partner is needed. Typical dance sessions consist of 15 folk dances, most with instructions. Folks may always sit out a dance to rest. Drop in to see if this internationally popular dance form is your cup of tea. Also, do a Google search with FDCSCOV YOUTUBE to see us in action online.
Hula On With Pizazz! Artistic Dir. Glory Lamb 805-698-3887 dancingextra@gmail.com Thu., 2-3 PM, Activity Center/Dance Studio
Yes, we’ve added pizazz to our dance outreach for the SCOV community. That means our dance repertoire will be varietal and aimed at providing entertainment and pizazz to the fun functions for our SCOV clubs. The hula gals turn into Roaring 20s flappers at For example, in the The Views Restaurant month of February, we put a Charleston together, by request, for Barbara McNeill at The Views Restaurant for the 2-20-2020 Roaring 20’s event. We provided fun, glamour and topped it off with a conga line for any and all patrons to join. The following Saturday evening, we performed a hula for a Hawaiian-themed unit party. March was rehearsal time for another hula, involving dancers from several clubs for the Ukelele Club Spring Singalong. Our rehearsals are not ongoing, just as needed for any occassion here at SCOV. Our costumes come from the Costume Closet, and our contribution to the entertainment scene benefits all. To participate, join us by submitting your name for our “On Call List,” and see how great it feels to have “Pizzazz.”

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
Joseph Pilates once wrote, “physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person should understand the basic principles. This takes a little time and patience as the exercises can be different from other forms of exercise, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive! It teaches proper balance, breathing, focus on your core (your abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to another results in your developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach mat Pilates classes and they modify many of the moves for us, if necessary. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Stop by and watch a class. Call Mary.

Many medical professionals now recommend tai chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. In our classes we enjoy learning the tai chi form. We also increase flexibility, strength, and learn to reduce stress. Our instructors Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich teach us how to apply tai chi principles to our daily lives.
