Association News

General Manager - Bob Mariani bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board Of Directors - Article Lauren Strassburg, laurens1932@gmail.com What’s Right With Sun City Oro Valley by Lauren Strassburg In a word (or two) most everything is right. The ballot issue on our governing documents was overwhelmingly approved. A congratulations for a job well done goes to the Governing Document Review Committee. The Pro Shop is up and running, and by the time you read this our new Restaurant/Lounge will be close to complettion. The installation of solar, with much-appreciated covered parking, is well on its way to completion. What will be the next projects we undertake? The community, through our committees, will have a say in this. However, the Board is still committed to not doing larger projects unless we have the funds available. Largely, this is our Capital Fund. We have high-quality staff managing each aspect of our day-to-day operation. The Association is financially sound with no debt. Of course what is really right in SCOV is the fact that our residents are involved. Involvement includes serving on a committee, serving on the Board. Or our involvement means resident attendance at our Board meetings, committee meetings and expressing ideas on how to better run our community. A good example of committee impact is our Properties Committee. A few recent actions of the committee are: • Installed LED light bulbs which are cheaper to operate and for which we get a credit from TEP. • Researching and assisting the solar project. • Researching water usage and the number of meters we currently have which are not in use. • Researching SCOV ownership in party walls. For those of us here in Sun City, enjoy the peace and quiet of summer. For those of you in far-flung places, just enjoy.

The Views Restaurant At a bit of a risk, I’m going to state that by the time you read this article, The Views Restaurant project will be complete or very close to complete. The end product will be, as planned, an updated restaurant area (previously the Café), a beautiful new lounge with a large full-service bar and a large covered terrace all of which will have panoramic views. The new restaurant, lounge and terrace will more than double the seating capacity of the Restaurant. Not only will the size be substantially increased, but the facility will be much more versatile. All areas can be opened to each other so one large function could accomidate 250 attendees. There will also be the option of separating the areas so that, for example, business as usual can be carried on in the restaurant while a banquet is taking place in the Lounge and Terrace. Although functions will continue to take place in the Activities Center, Desert Oasis and Catalina Vista, the size and versatility of The Views Restaurant will very likely result in considerably more functions taking place in the restaurant area. In addition to the dramatic increase in seating capacity and versatility, there will be a change in scheduling and offerings. It will make little sense to have a fantastic lounge with an indoor/outdoor bar and not have extended hours. More entertainment (think about warming up your voice for a little Karaoke) is planned to go along with a fun bar menu, more evening dinner specials and a variety of other enjoyable functions to attract and keep you coming to enjoy yourselves. There’s no doubt that The Views Restaurant will be a wonderful addition to the many other fantastic SCOV amenities. We want you to enjoy this new facility and, of course, want it to be financially efficient while providing excellent service and food. That means your patronage and input as to how The Views Restaurant is fulfilling your expectations will be very important on a continual basis.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! It’s A Dog’s Life at SCOV by Carolyn Corwin It’s nearly 6 PM, and Mighty Samson (Sam) is wagging his tail in circles at the front door. Phyllis is ready too. It is time for Sam, a twelve year old English lab, and his owner, Phyllis Cutcher, to make their daily trip to the Dog Park. Upon arrival, Sam wags his tail and sniffs his doggy buddies, while Phyllis greets her good friends, the other dog owners at the evening social gathering at the Dog Park. This important ritual in both of their lives has been occurring almost daily since the opening of Fido’s Friends Dog Park in late 2006. Dogs large and small, friends new and old, both canine and human, socialize. Marge Gustafson, president of the Fido’s Friends Dog Club, which operates and maintains the Dog Park, credits Bill Abel, retired veterinarian, as “father of the Dog Park”. He presented the idea of an off leash dog park to the SCOV Board of Directors in 2004. Due to questions and concerns regarding site location, costs, noise, fights, flies, and smells, no action was taken at that time. Bill and other supporters of the Dog Park/dog club continued their quest. Within three years, the dog club supporters prevailed and the Fido’s Friends Dog Park was established on Del Webb Boulevard. The SCOV Association contributed the use of the land. The agreement between the dog club with the association was that the dog park construction and maintenance be funded 100% by the dog club, with no Association dollars. The dog club had a successful fund netting campaign, raising the original cost of $28,000 required for survey, engineering, cleaning, grading, fencing and other physical assets of the park. The club has provided all of the maintenance and repair funds since that date. Donors later contributed a table and bench. Recent improvements include painting the fence to the new approved color, which was funded by a grant from the Sun City Vistoso Foundation, refurbishing the pea gravel, and door maintenance. Fights, noise, flies, and smells have not been issues, as dog club members police the park and keep maintenance standards high. After entering the park through the initial gate, dogs are un-

leashed and go off-leash through the second gate. Bill Abel explains; “Once dogs are released from the leash they lose their territorial guarding instinct, have a good time and don’t guard their owner anymore.” An assortment of breeds, large and small “all get along fine”, according to Phyllis. The evening gathering varies in time (currently six-seven) depending upon the time of year. There is also a morning gathering, and dog club members can use the park from dawn to dusk for safe play and exercise. Marge and dog club secretary/treasurer Elaine Deeter organize the club, with Elaine handling keys for members and many other tasks. Marge organizes a variety of dog club meetings during the year. Past topics include end of life issues for dogs and

hazards of the desert, a particularly pertinent topic for residents new to the area. Snake avoidance, Colorado River toad avoidance training and other sessions are held periodically, and are open to any SCOV member. Ambassador tours stop at the Dog Park, and several recent arrivals in SCOV have credited the dog park/club as an amenity important in their decision to locate here. Bill envisioned the Dog Park as a safe and fun play space for dogs. An unexpected and equally important benefit has been the close community resulting from the Dog Park gatherings. People of varied backgrounds and interests bond at the Dog Park, with new dogs and their people warmly welcomed. Bill says, “Our common interest is the dog but we have become friends in other ways and rely upon each other...” There are birthday parties, social gatherings, and support for life’s trials, all without dogs, among a wonderful group of people who have become true good friends.

Assistant Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 Emergency Contact Information There are times when resident-related emergencies arise in SCOV. It could be water running down the sidewalk or even when a member is on campus and in distress. During those times staff responds in several ways. If someone is in distress, 911 is called. Additionally, we pull up your Emergency Contact Form and notify the individual on that form what is happening. The same is true if a neighbor calls us and reports that water is running out from your garage door. We first call you. If you’re not available, we call whomever you have listed on the Emergency Contact Form. We do this as a service to our residents, but can only provide this service if your Emergency Contact Form is on file. If you’d like to provide an updated Emergency Contact Form, drop by the Administration Office or go to our website at Member Services/Home/ Other/Mailing Status.

day of every month, 2 PM, WC3. Our resident volunteers meet to discuss any questions they might have regarding recognition of violations of the SCOV Development Standards. An informal training session on identification of specific deficiencies is always included. If you are puzzled about the hows or whys of their processes, this is a great opportunity to become enlightened and supportive. You may even want to join these neighbors who help to keep our community looking good. We look forward to seeing you there.

The fiscal year for the Association ended June 30, 2016. As in the past, the financial statement for June is not included in the August Tipster due to time constraints for completion of year-end procedures. Financial statements can be found on our website www. scovaz.com and in our SCOV Library. An audit will be conducted in September and the complete audited financials will be available on the website and in the SCOV Library before October 31 as mandated by the Bylaws. A copy will also be available in the Administration offices. Money Matters will return with the September issue of the Tipster. Questions? Email rtrenary@suncityorovalley.com or call 917-8060.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 Always Something to Improve I sometimes hear residents say, “There is always something being built or fixed.” This statement indicates that SCOV is a community that keeps up with the times. Most recent are improvements to the Restaurant and the solar project. The solar will save on energy and keep costs lower for electricity. The Restaurant improvement was asked for by the community. In the future, when you see a sign that a project is taking place be happy knowing that we are keeping SCOV a great place to live.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 917-8058

All residents are cordially invited to attend any of the following committee meetings: The Architectural Review Committee meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, 2 PM, WC3. Your attendance at these meetings will often clear up any pre-conceived notions one might have about what the committee does. You will see how these volunteers respond to our ARC submittal process and learn how they use our governing documents to come to conclusions for approval or disapproval. There is time allotted at the end of each meeting for resident questions or suggestions. The Neighborhood Pride Committee meets the third Tues-

SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano suncityorovalley.com/about/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: webopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com 917-8083

I’d like to give a big thanks to the Sun City Vistoso Foundation for a grant that made possible the purchase of an electronic, height-adjustable work table for the library. The flexibility of this table makes it possible to do a wide range of tasks, from unpacking and sorting books, to typing labels, or calling for overdue items. We love it, and we love the Foundation for making our job easier. What’s new on our shelves? In fiction, Daniel Silva’s latest release Black Widow, and Liane Moriarty’s book Truly Madly Guilty; in movies, House of Cards Season 4 with Kevin Spacey, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice with Ben Aflleck and Henry Cavill; in large print, The Revolving Door of Life by Alexander McCall Smith, and The Island House by Nancy Thayer; and in audiobooks, Valiant Ambition by Nathaniel Philbrick, and First Comes Love by Emily Giffin.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 Benefits of Exercise Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than exercise. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. And the benefits of exercise are yours for the taking, regardless of your age, sex or physical ability. Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. You don’t need to set aside large chunks of time for exercise to reap weightloss benefits. If you can’t do an actual workout, get more active throughout the day in simple ways: by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or revving up your household chores. Special Note From the AFC Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis for questions or problems with the AFC. Tuesday, August 9, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen Wednesday. Wednesday, August 10, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen Thursday.

Association Committees Help Needed This Help Needed section seeks volunteer help for various Association Committees. You must be an owner/resident to serve.

Tipster Editor Must be a year-round owner/resident and have good spelling and grammar skills. Call Lou Phillippi 638-6957. The Future Housing Committee is looking for new members who have experience as an urban planner, an architect of homes, or a real estate developer. This ad hoc committee’s goal is to make recommendations to the Board for additions and/or changes which could be made to ensure that our housing stock will appeal to future homebuyers. Active Health Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com Oct.-May, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health

If you think active health requires gym equipment, exercise classes or competitive sports, think again. A number of groups offer the benefits of walking while also experiencing the joy of learning and pleasant conversation. The Birders, for example, average a 3-mile scenic outdoor stroll on their excursions, during which members also become knowledgeable about the birds of Arizona. The Day Trippers club provides educational experiences and some of stairclimbing while touring historic sites or exploring mysterious caverns. Even volunteerism can lead to an active lifestyle. Once a month, residents are invited to collate Tipster inserts in the Activity Center while enjoying light refreshments along with one to two hours of indoor walking. And in Vistoso Helping Hands, members stay active by providing neighbors with temporary assistance in daily chores, including feeding household pets, going grocery shopping and more. Why not join the fun today?

Architectural Review Janice Strassburg, 520-338-2568, janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3

Landscaping is under the purview of ARC (Architectural Review Committee). If you plan a major redo of your lot it must be approved by this committee. A recent presentation to ARC by Oro Valley covered set backs, the possibility of combining two lots, obtaining permits, street parking, views and plantings. Your development standards contain a list of plants that are allowed and also a list of those prohibited. One of the messiest trees in SCOV is the African Sumac which is on the prohibited list. Oro Valley has a ruling that non-native trees may only be 25 feet tall. We have nothing in our governing documents to protect the mountain views, so only neighbor thinking of neighbor can maintain them.

Food and Beverage Chair Del Peterson 307-631-3114 October-June, First Tue., 9 AM, WC1

We will have a fabulous lounge and terrace with the longest bar around. There will be a new cocktail menu with lots of great choices. Top off a great meal with another new feature, homemade sugar-free desserts. Happy Hours continue to be a big hit. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Bring your summer guests or just meet your neighbors and enjoy this happening place.

Friends of the Library Did you know our library doesn’t receive any funding for books, audios, videos or supplies? All of these items are purchased through donations, grants and fund raising. Your membership in the Friends of the Library provides a good portion of that funding: $15 pp or $20/household. Membership runs January-December, but you can join any time. Pick up a form in the Library. Also look forward to our annual Books and Authors Luncheon March 10 and the biennial House Tour February 18. Thanks for your participation. See you in the Library.

Future Housing Task Force Sally Evert 520-955-7877 salleyevert@gmail.com

The Future Housing Committee is in need of new members. See Help Needed, page 6, for details. Contact Jon Olson (jboclo@comcast.net) or Sally Evert(sallyevert@gmail.com) if you are interested. We need your help.

General Manager Search Chair Dick Brammell 701-361-8573

To date, the General Manager Search Committee has reviewed, updated and approved the General Manager’s job description and employment agreement to be used in the search. We have completed the search schedule which is a guideline and will be flexible because of the number of qualified candidates that may apply. Schedule: •August: Receive applications and select candidates to be interviewed. Conduct initial interviews via Skype. • September-October: Final candidates to have separate on site interviews, then have the Board select its choice for the job. Make offer to selected candidate.

Spurge Reminder Please remove spurge from your yards. Spurge is a creeping, low-growing weed that is often found in the cracks of driveways and the gaps between the sidewalk and street. It also grows abundantly in river rock. Spurge is a summer annual weed that depends on its prolific seed production for survival. A single plant is capable of producing several thousand seeds. If you pull the spurge out by hand it will drop thousand of seeds. The best way to remove the weed is to first spray the spurge with a weed killer. When it is dead (a couple of days later) pull the spurge out of the ground by hand.

Gift Shop Co-Chairs Barbara Gioioso 668-8610 and Randi Leonard 638-7548 Gift Shop 917-8051 Shop Hours: Mon.-Sat., 9 AM-12:30 PM orovalleygiftshop.com As summer wanes, the Gift Shop remains a cool haven for gift browsing. Stop in during the morning hours to enjoy the beauty of what our fellow residents produce. Check out pottery and cards by featured artist, Joan Kelley. “I have been a photographer since receiving my first Brownie camera as a pre-teen. Photography means writing with light and I love to find the light and make it show beauty in the most ordinary things. When I turned fifty and wanted more art in my life, I found clay. I am hooked and in the Joan Kelly studio whenever possible. My pieces are both hand built and wheel-thrown, ranging from rabbits dressed as people to wheel thrown forms altered into odd-shaped vases, anything to get my hands dirty.” The Gift Shop welcomes new consignors regularly and always looks for volunteers who enjoy serving shoppers in such a nice setting.

Government Affairs Ruth Coleman, 520-400-3593, captainruthc@gmail.com suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/government-affairs/

The committee is planning three political forums. Mark your calendar: Town of Oro Valley Council candidate forum Tuesday, August 2, 6 PM, Auditorium; the District 11 Arizona State Legislature and Senate candidate forum Saturday, October 1, 2 PM, Auditorium; the Pima County Supervisors forum, Monday, October 10, 2 PM, Auditorium. Following some Government Affairs-prepared questions, there will be time for written audience questions.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Meeting Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1

The Community Assistance Committee sponsors the Loan Room which is located at the end of the Cart Barn. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM for reservations and pickup. It is a great way to have the equipment for a medical need or other items when friends and relatives visit without having to buy and keep extra items around for a short period of time. The Loan Room is currently beginning to computerize our inventory and will be learning the software for this over the next several weeks. We ask your indulgence while we run duplicate systems to be sure everything works the best way possible. It will be necessary for you to have a current SCOV card for all future loans. We will not have the ability to use the key fob. Thank you for your patience. In July, we delivered 540 pounds, the first load of aluminum cans to the recycler, for the current fiscal year, and received $216. Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Perhaps You Can Help Summer rains and winds are here. Help keep a watchful eye out, and report any damage to Administration. With so many of our neighbors away at this time of the year, we need to be especially aware of our surroundings. Pesky weeds seem to appear overnight with the monsoon season, so remove them from your yard as soon as possible. Did the wind from the storms cause excessive tree debris in your yard? Keep your driveway and the sidewalk swept so that your home doesn’t appear vacant and become an invitation to a burglar. Is there standing water in your yard? With the rain that we have had, it’s important to drain ponds and/or fountains in yards to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Check other items outside your home that may collect rain, such as buckets, empty flower pots, and other containers, to be sure they are not holding standing water. Thanks for your help in our extremely hot summer months.

Posse Chair Larry Clark 404-7664 2larryclark@gmail.com First Tue., 3 PM, Catalina Vista scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first) Is this your hat? Our goal is to continuously improve our facilities and reduce our operating costs. If you feel there are needs for physical improvements at any of our facilities or would like us to investigate energy-related cost savings, please stop by one of our meetings to discuss it.

Tipster Editorial Chair Lou Phillippi 638-6957 lnphillippi@yahoo.com

The committee is proceeding with changing the order of clubs to look the same as the newly-revised website. This change will make our communications consistent. Next Tipster Editorial Committee meeting is Monday, August 15, 9 AM, WC1.

Golf Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs kgriggs@theviewsgolfclub.com 917-8053 As somethings slow down due to the hot weather, the Pro Shop staff is gearing up behind the scenes for another fun season. I will be ordering new range balls and scorecards. We will also be changing out the shoe brushes around the Pro Shop. Stop by our fully stocked Pro Shop to check out our closeout specials and our new summer hat supply. Our current golf rate cards can also be picked up in the Pro Shop. So stop by and visit with our friendly staff. We do have some new staff members in the Pro Shop, so stop by and introduce yourself to them. Buy your very own range pass (card), so you will not have to keep getting tokens from the Pro Shop. Stop by and ask for our pricing options and more details. Please remember that monsoon season is upon us and along with the rain comes lightning. Whenever you see lightning, please get indoors as quickly as possible. Lightning is nothing to fool around with (just ask Lee Trevino). Also, drink plenty of fluids and keep your body hydrated. Carrying a wet towel is also a great idea with the triple digit temperatures that we are experiencing.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063

August, following transition, is normally the time of the year when the golf course really gets back into good shape. The increase in humidity and chances of rain really encourage Bermuda grass growth to fill in weak areas. However, this year with the changes in timing of chemical applications to earlier in the season, and having two weeks closed to sprig weak areas in June has resulted in the golf course recovering in July instead of August. This allows for an extra month of good summer conditions. The extra month of growth will have many benefits for the future. Instead of trying to focus on growing shoots to fill in weak areas, the focus this year will be promoting more root growth. During the early part of August, the fairways are going to be deep-tine aerified. This will reduce compaction and encourage the Bermuda grass to push roots deeper into the soil. The improved root system will allow the golf course to transition better next summer with fewer areas to repair. Another benefit of having a better stand of Bermuda grass is providing a good seed bed for overseeding. The Bermuda grass provides protection for the rye grass seed to germinate so the results of overseeding going into the winter months will be very good. The benefits of growing a healthy stand of Bermuda grass in summer impacts every golfer. The summer golfers get a great golf course to play, and the winter golfers get a great overseeded golf course to play.

Golf Advisory Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 First Wed., 2 PM, WC3 The first meeting of the 2016-2017 season will be September 7. This will be the first meeting with the new club representatives. Please attend if you wish, especially if you have current concerns.

There will be a good representation from the Clay Club in the fall Arts and Crafts sale scheduled for the first part of December, so items are flying in and out of the kilns. Make sure to visit them all when you go. Also, a special project is on the horizon for a mixed-media project with the Glass studio. Stay tuned for more details as they develop

Summer courses continue into August. Thank you Jim Ford, Jane Myerson and Jim Williams for offering these free courses for summer residents. Fall course registration resumes Monday-Friday, August 8-19. Check the website to be certain the course you wish to take is still open. There are no refunds if you sign up for a course that is indicated as closed before August. A new course, Sell Your House, has been added to the Fall Course lineup. You will only hear back from the Registrars if you did not make it into a class. Once you register, make certain to add the dates and times of each class for which you registered to your calendar so you do not miss a class. Also, please read the course description carefully to determine if you need a text or other materials. Having the materials as indicated by the moderator will make your course experience more enjoyable. While you are preparing for classes, do you remember where you put your ILR name tag? It’s the one that is on a blue lanyard that goes around your neck and has your first name in big, clear letters. When you find it, put it with your ILR reading materials or in your calendar for that first day of class. Wear it to classes. It is a big help to moderators and classmates in learning names.

Tennis Pres., Larry Wall, 248-701-1044 larryandmaureenwall@gmail. Treas. Bill Pitts, 317-308-8155 wlpitts1@comcast.net Women: Jan Ostrander 818-0006 Mon., Wed., Fri., 7-11 AM Men: Sandy Wilson 818-2368 Tue., Thu., Sat., 7-11 AM Mixed Doubles: Sandy Kennedy 825-4865 Sun., 1-3 PM

The Wimbledon Tennis Tournament from London, England provided some upsets and outstanding play with many of the matches going five sets. Two words were always mentioned by the announcers: fitness and nutrition. You can work with light weights to help keep your arms, shoulders and wrists flexible. Eating lots of fruits, vegetables and protein will help fuel your body, and hydration is essential. Tennis Tip: When you play doubles, you need to think strategy. Having two opponents across the net forces you to use the whole court and understand which angles to hit and when to hit them. Sun City Variety Theatre

Jacquie Katsones, jkatsones@yahoo.com scovtheatre.com

Welcome to a new year for our Variety Theatre Club. We have many opportunities coming up for member participation in the new season, so now is the time to support your Theatre Group. We have reluctantly waved goodbye to our board President, Marcy Simpson, as she and her husband Peter have moved on to Maine. We wish them much happiness in their new home. Jacquie Katsones will be taking the responsibilities of president for now. Stephanie Consalvo, with her many years of experience in theatre at SCOV, will take on the Secretary position. Joy Johnson has agreed to consult and has added her vast knowledge of theatre in all aspects of production to the group. Planning continues for the new season, and we will keep all members advised via our Member Newsletter. Suggestions are welcome and can be submitted to Jacquie’s email. Become a member. You will love the experience. No experience necessary. This is the year to join. The most fun you can have in Sun City this winter. Call or email for more information.

With fewer members now using the shop, it is often less crowded, and more workspace and benches are usually available. This makes this the best time to work on large projects like cabinetry, furniture, etc. Normally, the storage of projects and materials in the shop is discourage due space restrictions which tends to discourage large projects, because moving them in and out of the shop frequently is difficult. With the possibility of more space being available during summers, short term storage of large projects may be possible. Before leaving these projects in the shop, however, be sure to get approval from the monitor or a club officer, and label the project with a name and phone number. Materials left in the shop without authorization and indication of ownership could be used by other members.
