What is ahead for Sun City Vistoso? by Hal Linton
As I write my last article for the Tipster as a member of the Board of Directors, I recount with satisfaction the achievements of our team during the past 31 months. The Board of Directors, the committees, and the staff made many improvements. Some improvements are highly visible, while some others are more transparent but nonetheless important. I will not enumerate them here because I want to focus on the work remaining to be done. Looking forward, Sun City Vistoso will be presented with its share of fiscal challenges. Trying to hold the line on overall expenditures, while keeping our community attractive and competitive, will require detailed planning and sound decision making. The way in which priorities are established can be bolstered by having a strategic baseline for assessing the value and benefits that accrue from the operational, planning and budgeting decisions that will be made. Therefore, I wholeheartedly encourage the community to maintain a strategic planning process, one that is deliberate, required and sustainable with annual reviews. The work of the Strategic Planning Committee will be the key to success. Fortunately, we are starting from a good position, because some elements of a strategic baseline are already in place: the work of the Properties Committee, the Asset Reserve Fund, the internal processes of the Finance and Budget Committee and the evolving strategic process map being the more notable ones. Of course, as always, we need volunteers with the experience, skills and drive to help the team.

Bob Mariani, General Manager Strategic Plan on the Move by Bob Mariani
Since the time the Board established the Strategic Plan Initiatives a few months ago, several committees and our staff have been evaluating the initiatives assigned to them and providing the Board with recommendations. The staff has been particularly active with its assignments which have resulted in, among other things, recommendations to approve nonresident golf play on a daily basis and a club storage policy. In addition to these recommendations, numerous actions have been taken to fulfill the assignments delegated to the staff and committees. These actions include establishing new marketing for public golf play, completing a storage analysis, implementing a paid librarian position, completing a projection room project, establishing a grant search subcommittee and implementing a new exercise program. Although considerable activity related to the Strategic Plan took place over the summer, discussions and evaluations of many very important aspects of the plan are just getting underway by the ad hoc committees that have been put in place by the Board of Directors. These ad hoc committees are: Sports Complex; Name Change; Image and the Realty committee. The Sports Complex Committee is discussing possible improvements to the facility as outlined in the Long Range Plan. The thought of renaming our community is being evaluated by the Name Change Committee. The Image Committee is discussing and will provide a recommendation regarding signage and name changes for the various facilities. The Realty Committee is evaluating the concept of implementing some kind of Association operated real estate company. In one way or another, all of the above noted issues that the ad hoc committees are studying may greatly impact the future of Sun City Vistoso. Although there has been considerable discussion of and information disseminated about these initiatives in the past, little has been noted lately. As a result, I thought it was important to give you a reminder about what is transpiring and a suggestion that you stay informed about these matters by reading materials that will be available in the Tipster and Board minutes and/or attending committee meetings or at least the Board Meetings. Those of you who stay tuned and provide input will likely influence the direction taken on these very important, if not critical, initiatives. On the other hand, residents who do not pay attention to this process may be disappointed or at least surprised by the end results.

We have 2,488 houses. Imagine a high school with 2,488 students. The students are off in many directions with a plethora of needs and interests. Still, school pride, a spirit of togetherness, and a tone of progressive cooperation are both big and omnipresent. The ARC seeks to give approval to homeowners for their projects or help them find solutions to their needs and situations. Our decisions are based on the SCV Governing Documents, as well as the needs and concerns of neighbors. The revisions of the Development Standards over the years have helped homeowners enhance their property’s value and positively impact their 2,487 neighbors. Observing how well our entire

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso! Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Fiscal year aluminum can receipts reported in November were $1,215; aluminum recycled to date 2,153 lbs. We are currently taking reservations for items you may need during the holidays when you have visitors or parties. Please consider making your reservations by telephone Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The 8-9 AM telephone system does not give you a busy signal when the reservationist is on the line with another call; you will get a continuing ring. We also do not have the capability for you to leave a message. Please continue to call back or come to the Loan Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, to make your reservation directly. Be sure to bring your current Sun City Vistoso ID with you when you pick up equipment. The proposal for the Induction Loop Assisted Hearing System, which CAC had agreed to partially fund, has been put on hold due to technical and financial issues. If it or something similar is reinstated, CAC will again consider helping fund this project. Recently, CAC donated $1,000 to Casas Amigas, a program we support regularly. Please continue to recycle your aluminum cans. Consumer Referral Chair Don and Pat Pomeroy 825-1725 Desk Phone: 825-3711 ext 137 Monday-Friday, 9:30 AM-11:30 AM, Social Hall

The holidays are on the way and you don’t have to go far to find that special gift. The Gift Shop is filled with the holiday spirit and great gift ideas. You can start with our Artist of the Month window which is shared this month by Patt Bloom and Jinnie Wilson. Patt Bloom is one of the Gift Shop’s talented potters. Her work is not only beautiful but functional as well. The pottery pieces make great serving dishes that are not only food safe but microwave and dishwasher friendly too. Her talents are not limited to pottery. Her potato bags make a microwaved potato taste like it came from a conventional oven. She also makes stained glass night lights. Jinnie’s angels are well known not only in Sun City Vistoso but in the surrounding community. Jinnie always makes sure area children have a special angel during the holidays. Between Jinnie and Patt, you will be able to check several names off your holiday list. Don’t forget, the Gift Shop is open Sundays, 1-4 PM, until Christmas. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, December 2010
We wish you a happy holiday season. Five whole years have passed since our committee was formed and our community looks absolutely beautiful. As a community, we should indeed feel proud of the way we look, not only to neighbors and ourselves, but also to those individuals who visit with the thought in mind to buy and move here. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in helping to make Sun City Vistoso such a wonderful place in which to live. Enjoy the holidays, your families, your friends and neighbors and especially our beautiful community. Neighborhood Pride hopes you have a joyous season and a Happy New Year.

Robin Coulter, Admin. Comm. Director Marketing The Views Golf Club
Have you seen the latest edition of the Southern Arizona Tee Times magazine? If not, drop by the Pro Shop and pick up a copy. The Views Golf Club has a fullpage ad on the last page of the book and a course review by Jack Talmage, the Director of Golf at the Rio Rico Country Club. There is information about the course accompanied by gorgeous photos. The Board of Directors has mandated the marketing of The Views Golf Club and this is one of the efforts of the Marketing Committee and staff. Southern Arizona Tee Times has partnered with the PGA Southwest Section Southern Chapter to really boost interest in golf. The magazine with a draw for players of all levels appeals to both men and women. It also boasts a large email list through which this magazine is distributed digitally. The Marketing Committee and staff felt this was a good way to gain exposure for The Views Golf Club. Stop by the Pro Shop, pick up a copy of the magazine and while you’re there, schedule a tee time.

I have been receiving suggestions from residents for future trips and entertainment. I always appreciate your input. However, as an example, if only a handful of residents want a bus trip to a certain place, the cost of the bus makes it prohibitive. The same goes for entertainers. There may be residents wanting a bagpipe concert but not enough interest to fill the Auditorium and pay for the entertainer. In the January Tipster I will be inserting an activity survey. I ask that you fill it out and return it to the Administration Office. Your input will help me plan future activities and programs of interest to SCV residents. I wish all of you a wonderful holiday with many blessings and may 2011 bring you happiness.

Community Services, Jerry Van Brunt Address Lights
The Golder Ranch Fire Department and the Oro Valley Police Department have expressed their appreciation to those residents who have updated their lighted house number fixture or changed very dim or burnt out bulbs in their current fixture. Visible house numbers can save precious seconds for emergency vehicles locating the correct home to which they are responding. There continue to be many homes that have very dim bulbs in these fixtures which create a problem in identifying homes at night. We suggest that all residents make it a habit to periodically check their address fixtures at night, verifying the visibility from near the middle of the street. If you have trouble making out the number, please have the bulbs changed. In addition, you should check your flashing emergency security porch light. There have been instances where these lights are found to be not working. If you need lights or fixtures, they are available at Oro Valley Ace Hardware. October Housing Resale Information Resales

Gym germs are in essence the same germs that are found on door knobs, sinks and handrails. One should not use the germ-phobia excuse as a reason to skip the gym as a whole. Being forewarned is being forearmed. When it comes to protecting yourself and your immune system from these grimy germs, all it takes, for the most part, is common sense: don’t touch your eyes, ears or nose while at the gym. Good hand hygiene is a must, making sure to wash hands thoroughly before and after gym use. By working out regularly, you’re likely to have a stronger immune system than someone who does not; therefore, you can resist germs better than the general population. Gym etiquette is no longer just re-stacking your weights when you are done lifting; now it is wiping the perspiration drops you left behind on the headrest. When you are walking on the blue mats, think about where your shoes have been. So next time you see the laminated sign, “Please wipe down after use” staring at you as you approach the treadmill or hit the mats for some abdominal crunches, do it! Association-Sponsored Fitness: Purchase a punch card from the receptionist in the Administration Office, $10/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Vistoso-sponsored fitness classes. It can also be used for your guests. There is a $2 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card. Cardio Chair Aerobics: Tuesday, Thursday, 10:3011:30 AM, Catalina Vista. Sunrisers: Low-impact aerobics class: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7:15-8:15 AM, Auditorium. Sweat Stretch: Tuesday, Thursday, 7:30-9 AM, Auditorium. Water Aerobics: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 10-11 AM, Sports Complex Pool. Zumba: Thursday, 5:15 PM, Auditorium. Personal Trainer: Call Ray Jerkins 219-3561 to make an appointment. Sports Complex and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation, page 2 of this Tipster. Tuesday, December 14, the Sports Complex pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, December 15, the Desert Oasis pool will close at 7 AM for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time. Special Note from the Sports Complex: Thursday, December 2, 1 PM, an orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held. Space is limited, so stop in and sign up. Sun City Vistoso Foundation The Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation, a separate and independent organization from the Association, established in 1998, provides a means through which tax-deductible gifts may be channeled to support qualified health, cultural, educational and charitable needs of Sun City Vistoso and surrounding areas. Gifts may be made at any time by check, in stocks or by gifts-in-kind to the Foundation, 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85755. Pres. Li Chase 825-6764
The Oro Valley Police Department continues to look for ways to educate local residents about methods to keep themselves and their families safe. After a recent attack on an Oro Valley citizen, it is imperative that we learn how to better deal with our own individual safety. The Foundation Board provided a grant to the Oro Valley Police Department so that they could begin to offer a Rape Aggression Defense System to teach awareness, risk reduction and the basics of self defense to Sun City Vistoso and Oro Valley residents. The Foundation Board established a grant to help the Genealogy Club purchase new computers by allowing donors to donate to the Foundation on behalf of the Genealogy Club. The November Tipster contained a flyer from the Foundation describing its activities and thanking members for their donations: past, present, future. With the end of the tax year rapidly approaching, we encourage you to submit your tax-deductible donations to the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation at 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd., Oro Valley, AZ 85755. Your donations will be used toward improving the quality of life in our unique community. The December 15 meeting will feature Margie Pazzi as our guest speaker. She does clinical studies, some of which are helpful to Parkinson patients. She will talk about a new medication used to address low blood pressure that is experienced by many Parkies. I am very enthusiastic about the study that she is currently doing on this medication. We will also have time for discussion of concerns we have about Parkinson’s. Just a reminder: the twice weekly Parkinson’s Exercise groups are still meeting. See Workshops and Classes section for details. Now is a great time to come to the classes and get started with individualized exercises. Ray Jerkins is great at getting people started, no matter what their level of exercise is at the time. Vistoso Helpful Hands

Golf Kim Griggs, Head Golf Professional
We have changed the Pro Shop Open House date because of the Ladies Christmas party. The sale will be on Tuesday, December 14 instead of Tuesday, December 7, 5-7 PM. The Pro Shop will offer huge savings just in time for Christmas and the Café will have some delicious appetizers and punch. The bar will be open as well. Spin the wheel again this year to reveal your big discount! On Thanksgiving Day the Pro Shop will close at 1 PM. On Christmas Eve day the Pro Shop will close at 1 PM and will be closed all day on Christmas. It has been brought to my attention that a homeowner’s window was broken by a golf ball last week. Yes, typically homeowner’s insurance will pay for this, and yes, this person does live on a golf course. However, the honest and forthright way to handle this situation is to go to the house and admit that you have hit an errant shot. Nobody tries to hit houses; however it does happen and the homeowner will appreciate your honesty. Just a reminder, if you have not renewed your annual pass for the season and you still have a range key from last season, please turn your key into the Pro Shop as it is no longer valid. Thank you for your cooperation in advance. Michael Kropf, Superintendent
The golf course maintenance department wants to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season. December not only brings the holidays, but also cooler temperatures. This winter the weather predictions are for the Southwest to be warmer and drier than normal. However, there will inevitably be cold nights that will produce frost on the golf course so this would be a good time to remind everyone of the frost policies. Walking or driving on frosted grass causes severe damage to the green leaf tissue that eventually leads to the grass dying. When the roughs go dormant and turn brown, they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways, tees and greens are very susceptible to damage. Every cold morning when frost is possible, a message will be left before 6 AM on the Pro Shop phone system stating what the conditions are on the course and how those conditions will impact the golfers. If the frost is not too bad, we might not have a delay, but the golf carts will remain on the paths for a specified amount of time. If the frost is more severe, the delay will reflect the earliest a shotgun can safely play on the grass. A reminder: the lower putting green, driving range tee and chipping area all have overseeded grasses so they will be closed until the frost has melted. However, the upper practice green has not been overseeded so putting will be allowed during the frosty mornings.

Golf Advisory Jerry Haddock 825-1058 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache Public Play Versus Resident Play
There is a concern with some resident golfers about the daily rates public players pay, versus what residents pay. Both are in place to serve different purposes. Almost all golf courses in Tucson need outside play to stay viable. We are no different. Resident play permits a player to play in club events if they are in a golf club, book reservations several days in advance, select who they want to play with and the time of day they would like. Very few restrictions apply. Public play as a walk-up or using Golf Now has numerous restrictions. They are not permitted to play in club events or with resident members. They play only at times we select and we control with whom they will be paired. There are also numerous restrictions on booking a tee time in advance and refunds are not permitted. Outside play only 6.5% represented of all the rounds played here last year and every dollar they pay helps to keep our golf fees down. Nothing prohibits residents from playing using Golf Now or the public play option, but they are subject to all of the same restrictions. Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club Pres. Jerry Rickard 825-7175 Membership Jerry Haddock 825-1058 Play: Wednesdays
Congratulations to Preston Sheriff, Dick Boss, Dave Heaps and Gene Weston for finishing 1st in the Greek Scramble. Annual Turkey Shoot produced 24 winners. Ray Bruns recorded the top score of 64. A Bash will be held December 1 followed by an important general meeting. Food will be prepared by “Chef” Ron Roberts. Momentum is building for The Views Cup, a new season-long event. Details are in Pro Shop and on Bulletin Board. Come join us. We offer a forum to meet new friends and have fun at the same time. For membership information call Jerry Haddock. Do not forget the Member/Guest April 13 and 14, one of the most popular events of the year. Congratulations to Adam Dress for his Hole-In-One on #7, October 28, one swing, two bounces and in the cup.
Men’s 9-Hole Golf Club Pres. David Chatterton 818-0404 Membership Jack Saatkamp 825-4376 Play: Thursdays morning
Our nine-hole club plays every Thursday morning with an 8 AM start time. Please arrive and check in at least by 7:30 AM so the Pro Shop staff can confirm all sign-ups are present to adjust the pairings, if needed. Our club currently has 79 members and is still growing. A hearty welcome to our 8 new members. Our members keep score of both our golf strokes and our club friends. We have burger bashes, tournaments and other social events that add to our camaraderie. This month’s meeting will be in the Social Hall/Navajo immediately following golf on December 9. The Christmas Burger Bash will follow. Feature
You can sign up for play two weeks in advance. If your schedule changes and you are able to play, you can still sign up on a space available basis anytime prior to the day of play and, if the field is full, you will be placed on a waiting list. Already this season we have had last minute cancellations that affect pairings and cause additional work for the Pro Shop. Our Standing Rules state: 1. Players must sign up in the computer by the Monday, a week and a day before play day. After that time, they can add their name to the wait-list at the Pro Shop. All players must check in at the Pro Shop at least 30 minutes before their shotgun or tee time. Players who are noshows may be denied the privilege of play the following Tuesday. Cancellations should be made through the Pro Shop. The Board will be addressing the issue of whether or not cancellations made on the day of or the day prior to play should also be subject to the same penalty.
Lady 9ers Pres. Jan Dunbar 818-9027 Membership Linda Miller 818-2716 Play: Thursdays
Our club year is off to a great start and the busy Holiday season is here. Please mark your calendars for December 2 for general meeting in the Social Hall/ Navajo. Our Christmas Party will be held on December 9 in the Auditorium at 11:30 AM. We will be collecting canned goods and unwrapped children’s gifts/toys for the Golder Ranch Fire Department Toy Drive. We are looking forward to some Holiday cheer, a good time and great food. Please look for sign-up sheets in the binder in the Pro Shop. We wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season. We are always looking for ladies to join us on Thursday mornings, 8:30 AM tee time. Please contact Linda Miller for membership.

Sun City’s CAC has sponsored three motion-activated wildlife cameras which have been placed in various locations in and around Sun City for two and one half years. In July we captured our goal picture, a male mountain lion just north of the north boundary in the State Land area. We are hopeful that this will assist in supporting the wildlife bridge and underpasses programmed by the Regional Transportation Authority and the State for the Oracle Road project. The link to the pictures that are in the album is: http://picasaweb.google.com/hobart3rd/SunCityW ildlifeCameraProject?authkey=Gv1sRgCMyB067haPgEg&feat=directlink You are invited to look at these pictures. We just bought the house in Sun City Vistoso in July and this was our first visit after closing. This was taken by Gayle Hill from inside our house through the bedroom window glass, across our patio. A great picture of a buck “in velvet” (still has the velvety skin on his new antlers). We were thrilled to see such wildlife on our very first day moving in.

In November, members had a very positive reaction to Muriel Barbery’s The Elegance of the Hedgehog. This novel is about residents of an apartment building in Paris who learn about themselves and each other and become friends. Linda Piele led our sharing of views about this book. At our December meeting we will examine Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd. Jodie Johns will lead. The story unfolds in London, where the main character struggles to survive an unexpected and most difficult situation. Looking ahead to January 3, we will explore Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, with Harriet Rosenstein leading. The main character is Thomas Cromwell, advisor to King Henry VIII. Cromwell battles to overcome his low standing with the nobility. Come enjoy our interesting discussions. Sun City Vistoso Birders Group birding at Pena Blanca Lake. Photo by Roger Hinkle.

Great Books Pres. Martha Sartoris 825-0092 October-May, First and third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Tohono
The Civically Engaged Reader, our current great book, depicts associating as “the underlying condition of civically engaged activity.” As we explore this theme in December, we’ll confront the fact that disparate groups may not readily or congenially associate with each other. December 1 Sandy Rice leads our discussion of an excerpt from The Souls of Black Folk by W. E. B. Du Bois. December 15, Syrile Ellison directs our consideration of Jane Addams’ Earliest Impressions focusing on the development of an altruistic outlook. January 5, we tackle the theme of giving as Mona Schorr-Holder helps us reflect on a selection from the Mishneh Torah by Moses Maimonides. January 19, we’ll ponder how our service to others may affect us as well as them, as Michelle Brislance guides us through an examination of Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s short story Luella Miller and Jan Beatty’s poem Saving the Crippled Boy. Bowling--Pathfinders Don Andersen 825-1408 Mondays, 9 AM, Fiesta Lanes

Contact Gordon Gillin for information and to be placed on our roster. Technique, starts and turn clinics are scheduled at our sports complex pool, Fridays, December 10 and 17, and January 7 and 21, 2-4 PM. Let’s have fun, fitness and camaraderie in 2011!

Paris, the City of Lights, is comprehensively viewed using the iconic Paris landmarks as our guide to knowing the city’s history, culture, and its real essence: beauty and art. A day in nearby Giverny and Versaille: highlights the city’s keen appreciation of art, especially Impressionism and its contributions to human enlightenment and freedom. In upcoming presentations, Gordon McCall, a retired history professor from UofA, will enlighten us with the history, culture, archaeology, geography, etc. of his various travel subjects.

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, December 2010
Discussing political poetry, Rita Dove insists “the first thing a poem has to be is good—it’s got to knock your socks off.” It can be an effective diatribe or clever propaganda, she contends, but “if it does not at some level really love every syllable and think of every syllable that it shapes, and that becomes part of its making, then it’s not a poem.” As we read and discuss what we’ve written, sometimes we ponder whether a particular effort is, in fact, a poem, what the criteria are and who gets to make that determination. Mostly, though, we encourage each other’s progress, ask questions about intent and offer suggested improvements with candor, good humor and kindness. We are always gentle and welcoming with newcomers.
