Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOVCA Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. SCOV Board of Directors Election by Lou Gard In February you will be receiving a ballot for the next election for your Board of Directors. There are seven residents on your Board; they are elected for threeyear terms. In a three-year cycle two members are elected the first two years, three members then elected the third year. In 2013 there will be three new Board members elected. There are two committees that support the election process, the Nominating Committee and the Election Committee. The Nominating Committee interviews prospective board members to establish their interest and qualifications. Generally, these people have been active on committees or have other qualifications in their background that lead the Committee to believe they will function as a contributing Board member. The Election Committee is then responsible for preparing candidates for the election process. Any resident may elect to run for the Board after the Nominating Committee’s slate has been selected. They may do so by having 50 residents (one resident per lot) sign a petition, get a written certification of eligibility from our General Manager and fill out a resumé on a form provided by the Board. These three documents must be presented to the Nominating Committee prior to January 11, 2013 in order for their name to be on the ballot. Three Candidate Forums will be held in February over a two-week period. Please watch the Tipster for the scheduled Forum dates and times. Each candidate will hold three coffees sponsored by the SCOV Association where all residents can meet the candidate and ask questions. Supporters of candidates may also have coffees in their homes for the candidates; attendance at these coffees is generally by invitation only. During each Candidate Forum, candidates are given a list of questions by the Election Committee regarding various topics that pertain to SCOV. Everything from our financial condition to philosophical questions regarding the day-to-day running of the Association are asked. All candidates are given the same questions so residents in attendance can compare the knowledge and understanding of each candidate regarding happenings in SCOV. After the prepared questions from the Election Committee, several questions from the audience will be presented to the candidates, as well. It is critical that all residents become familiar with each candidate and what the candidate feels is important for SCOV’s future. I urge you to take the time to go to at least one Candidate Forum; they are enlightenSun City Oro Valley Tipster, December 2012

ing and often quite entertaining. Also, try to understand who the candidate’s supporters are. By doing so it may tell you a lot about the candidate. Are the candidate’s supporters residents that have been active in the past, and have their supporters had a positive impact or influence in SCOV? Some residents may be approached and asked to vote for one candidate only. I, along with a majority of the Board, ask that you resist voting for only one Candidate as it violates both the spirit and intent of our election process. By voting for only one candidate, it skews the election in favor of that candidate and does not do justice to the other candidates who have worked hard to earn your vote. Remember that all of the candidates have put in many hours to understand the issues facing SCOV, and they deserve your consideration. I look forward to seeing all of you at a Candidate Forum in February. General Manager - Bob Mariani

Sun City Oro Valley, What a Great Place Last month, Pam Sarpalius had an article in the Tipster about wonderful comments she received from a nonresident about SCOV. I don’t mean to overstate this subject, yet thought it valuable to provide a perspective from another nonresident and a professional community manager. From my perspective, you don’t live in utopia, but it’s about as close as you can get, especially for the money. As 55 Places.com noted in a recent article, SCOV is one of the top six active adult communities in Arizona for the buck. I fully agree with their assessment and personally think it’s #1. First, SCOV is in a fantastic location, near the hub of the city yet far enough away so as not to be caught in the congestion. Then there are the views and more views everywhere you look. The only thing that gets in the way of the views are the trees, yet, how many desert communities have the lush growth to enjoy as in SCOV. Not only is the location and environment excellent but consider all the amenities. For about $4.30 a day, residents of this community have access to a wide variety of amenities from a Café, to pools, to tennis courts, to pickleball courts and of course, the best golf course around. As a result of having Boards and management over the past 25 years who had foresight, the amenities, with few exceptions such as the fitness center, are up to date, very desirable and well maintained. Granted, no one can claim perfection, and there is always room for improvement regarding maintenance and services for which we are constantly striving. Yet, the goal of this article is not to focus on the current operation or to take credit for the greatness of this community as much as that is a result of the natural environment and long-term sound oversight. The point of this article is to ask you to take a moment to smell the roses and truly appreciate what you have in the home and community in which you live plus to encourage you to invest in SCOV, so that it is a desirable community for generations to come.

The Committee is exploring the possibility of creating a Welcome Wagon-type program to welcome new residents to SCOV. The idea would be to meet with new residents as soon as possible after they purchase their SCOV home and provide them with a variety of information about life in SCOV in particular and the Oro Valley and Tucson areas in general. Committee member Cecilia Pfeiffer has produced a detailed outline of what the program would entail. We are looking for people who would comprise a core group which would take responsibility for planning, developing and implementing the program. If you would like to help create a program to welcome new residents to our community contact Richard Babin or Cecilia. Email for Cecilia: cecpfeiffer@gmail.com. Phone 825-8698. Email for Richard rbabin@rochester.rr.com. Phone 989-3321. The Committee continues to recruit new members. Contact Richard if you would like to help improve communication in SCOV. The committee article last month explained that the FCC (Fitness Center Committee) agreed the locker rooms should be moved and why moving them from the west side to the east side of the facility made a great deal of sense in regard to the American Disabilities Act requirements and a minimal cost difference between remodeling and moving the facilities. Since that report, the committee has worked with the architectural firm, STG Design, to make additional improvements to the selected plan, which was Plan 3 and is not Plan 3a. The committee has also started discussing the presentation that will be made to the Board of Directors on December 13, responses to residents who provided input for the plans, and dialog that will take place with the Association membership regarding the proposed plan and vote in February/March of next year. Properties Chair Jack Evert Saljack439@msn.com 818-3068 Third Thursday, 9 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

The Properties Committee has been assigned two interesting and potentially impactful projects. The first is to evaluate a cogeneration project which has as its goal higher energy efficiency. It works by using natural gas to generate electricity and then captures the waste heat from the engine to heat the pool. The question we are studying is whether or not the payback on the investment is acceptable. The second is evaluation of need, new system design, and installation of audio visual equipment in the Social Hall and Catalina Vista meeting rooms. We expect to improve quality and ease of operation for users. We plan to solicit input from users and monitors to help design the system components. Another project that is nearing completion is the solar water heater on the Desert Oasis pool. The system has been upgraded with a new computerized controller to more finely control the handoff between the solar heater and the backup gas heater. Renters in SCOV It’s the season when SCOV’s renter population increases. We love renters at SCOV. They come here, become involved in the many SCOV clubs, discover how special this place is and many decide to make Sun City Oro Valley their home. Staff and the Marketing Committee will be looking closer at how we can develop and improve our relationship with renters. There are several categories of renters. Some find us and rent for a month or two, especially during the high season, and there are also those who rent on a longterm basis. There is also the renter who comes into the community, but doesn’t register in the Vistoso Center, and we never have an opportunity to welcome them to SCOV. Either way, they’re welcome and we want them to consider this their home away from home. We would also like them to consider making this their permanent home. If you rent your home, please make sure you have your membership cards on file in our office, so that when your renter comes to town, we are able to issue renters’ cards to them. These cards enable them to use the facilities. If you are a renter, there is now a Renter’s Handbook available in the Vistoso Center with information about the community. Make sure you have one. Renters are also encouraged to take a tour with our Ambassadors, a volunteer group of residents. They don’t sell anything; they just take you around the community on our six-seat golf cart and show you the amenities of SCOV. How many of us remember Andy Williams singing that song on his Holiday TV specials each year? It is a wonderful time in SCOV. We have our SCOV Singers putting on their great holiday program. There is a bus trip to Nordstom in Scottsdale for holiday shopping on Friday, December 7. Many clubs and groups are planning holiday parties. Finally let’s not forget our holiday visitors who come to see us to get away from the colder snowy weather. Bad weather is something that we don’t usually have to worry about during this season. I hope all your holiday wishes and hopes come true and, as we look to 2013, let’s keep the holiday spirit in our hearts all year.

Congratulations and bon appetit! See Café Specials for our special dinners this month. SCOV Library - Marnie Goodbody What’s New at the Library

A few of the many new books and DVDs at the library this month: In Nelson De Mille’s new book, The Panther, Kate Mayfield and John Corey are sent to Yemen for some nonstop excitement and terrorist–stopping action. We have The Panther—unabridged—on CD, too! Joanne Harris’s third in her Chocolat series, Peaches for Father Francis, is another delight about France, food, and good story telling. The Last Empress: Madame Chiang Kai-shek and the Birth of Modern China (2009) by Hannah Pekula was a splendid donation. This biography received excellent reviews and is a fascinating story of a fascinating and powerful woman. A few of the new DVDs: Moonrise Kingdom (Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Bruce Willis) Elena (Russian), winner of the Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Prize. Darling Companion (Diane Keaton, Mark Duplass, Kevin Kline, Elisabeth Moss) Polisse (French), suspenseful and moving fictionalized portrait of the Paris Police Child Protection Unit. Zumba Aqua Zumba, known as the Zumba pool party, gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, bodytoning and, most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. First class will start Tuesday, January 15, 1 PM, AFC pool. Zumba Gold targets the largest growing segment of the population: baby boomers. It takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active, older participants, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all the elements the Zumba fitness-party is known for: the zesty Latin music like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton; the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere. For active older adults who want camaraderie, excitement and fitness as a regular part of their weekly schedule, Zumba Gold is the perfect fit. It’s a dance-fitness class that feels friendly and, most of all, fun. We are adding another class starting in Tuesday, January 8, 9:15 AM, Auditorium. December 2012, Sun City Oro Valley Tipster

Superintendent - Michael Kropf

A new problem associated with reclaimed water occurred during overseeding this year: disease on the greens. The disease, Rapid Blight, favors an environment of high salt irrigation water, warm temperatures and newly germinated grass. The disease occurs a few days after the first mowing of the new greens and when the amount of water being irrigated is reduced. It shows up with small, dark circles that quickly spread across the greens. The disease was quickly diagnosed when the symptoms first appeared. The mowers were removed from the greens to slow the spread and the irrigation frequency was increased to alleviate the salts. Two applications of fungicide were applied to kill the fungi and the diseased areas were reseeded in hopes of filling in the dead spots. There was a great deal of stress trying to get the greens to heal in time for opening day so the golfers would have great greens. On opening day, the greens looked great and most people didn’t even know there had been a serious problem. However, after just a few days the greens looked much worse, due to the amount of ball marks that golfers were leaving unrepaired. Now that the winter season has started, please remember to take care of the golf course. Please repair ball marks. Rake traps so the next golfer isn’t penalized, and repair divots on the tees and fairways. Please obey the No Cart signs so grass isn’t damaged near the greens. Golf Advisory Chair Preston Sheriff 825-3101 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache

All the golf clubs have started their seasons and have shown an increase in memberships. Kim Griggs reported that many outside groups are coming to play here at The Views. Many of these groups say they will return to play our beautiful course. We have had inquiries from golfers at The Highlands, Crooked Tree, Arizona National, The Gallery and Vistoso about playing our course. Greg Hansen, a local sports reporter, played our course a few weeks ago with some of his friends. He wrote a very complimentary article, including the condition of the course, the views, the Café and the helpful golf staff. Kim also received a nice email from a visitor from Washington State who raved about everything he experienced here. He will be back with his friends when they return. It is our responsibility to keep our course in the best condition we can. Do your part.

They have been adapted for people with arthritis, chronic pain, stiffness, heart disease and cancer. These are very simple, effective techniques that actively engage the body’s own healing systems. By rotating all the major joints of the body, you expand and contract most of your muscles, thus increasing circulation and range of movement. January 7, Ann Feeney will guide our discussion of Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Infidel, a memoir depicting the author’s difficult journey from the desert poverty of Somalia to Saudi Arabia, Kenya and eventually the Netherlands. Then we meet Sebastian who “was thirty years old when he was commissioned to repair the wall of the Certosa.” This is where the story really begins and continues to develop as other characters are introduced and the restoration proceeds. Poets’ Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Mondays, 9:15-11:15 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

After the Guest is a poem about death, but poems are rarely straightforward so Gregory Orr gets at his grief obliquely as in the following lines: “On the wall there’s a photo of the dead one I’ve fed with my looking as my wife feeds guests. When she stirs in her nap, when she moans or sighs, it’s no hungry ghost the night has sent, but the simple cold. I tuck a blanket around her shoulders; I pray we’ll grow old.” Themes of death and loss seem to become more prevalent as we age, but our group also produces poems of celebration, love, anger and even humor. All are met with lively commentary and helpful suggestions. Resident poets wishing to participate in these weekly workshops are welcome to join us.
