From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Stability-Evolution-Diversity by Don Coleman Our community is active, adult and adaptive with high standards meeting the diverse needs of both longtime owners and prospective members. Unlike the first few years, the number of homes and residents in SCOV is now very stable. Since that time resident diversity has increased; about a third of us are newer residents (0-7 years), on the other hand about a third of us are longtime residents (15+ years) leaving a third of us occupying the midrange (7-15years). This diversity is very likely to remain stable. Typically, a new resident will stay here 20 years or more, evolving and taking on the unique characteristics of each of the three groups. For simplicity, let’s call residents as they evolve through each group by the following names: Nancy Newbie, Al Average, and Sally Savvy. Nancy Newbie, the newer resident, may still be working, is physically very active, up on all the current values, comes with a set of skills that are current, eager to get involved and make investments in her new community. Her income level is based on current economics. She is interested in improvements that keep SCOV current and can be enjoyed for the next 15-20 years. Al Average is at the midpoint of his stay here and is able to appreciate values of the other two groups. Al is a major contributor to the viability of the community and has energy and insight. He is the owner of needed skill sets and has helped to fund many enhancements. Sally, the long term resident, who may sell her house in a few years, is knowledgeable and largely satisfied, still active and has also helped fund all community enhancements. She may have an income level based on yesterday’s economics and be concerned about cash flow and resale values. How should a Board member best represent the diverse interests of all three groups? The set of priorities I follow are: -To maintain our “Standards and Quality-of-Life” at their current high level. -To invest in enhancements and amenities that materially affect our home values. -Finally, to ensure SCOV is managed with rigorous fiscal responsibility and restraint.

Long Range Planning Over a period of several months, the astute, hard-working members of the Strategic Projects Committee lead by Chair Tut Tustison, developed several reports that included 90 recommendations. These reports and recommendations were submitted to the Board of Directors. The recommendations were either accepted, approved, not approved or placed on hold for possible further consideration. Areas of attention included in the reports are renovations/ use of the Activity Center; a proposed Café; a proposed Lounge; golf operations; golf course issues such as eventually replacing the putting greens; surveys; pickleball courts and marketing. Most of the 90 recommendations are now considered “Board Initiatives,” and were assigned to committees and/or staff for evaluation, implementation or plan development. The key committees that will be working on these initiatives are the Long Range Planning, Golf Advisory and Marketing Committees. Although not directly assigned, it’s very likely that other committees such as the FinanceBudget and Properties Committees will assist in dealing with a number these initiatives in some way. Several of the initiatives are minor in nature; however, many of the Initiatives are of sufficient importance that constant attention to and understanding of them is very important to the membership and the future of SCOV. For example, the Initiatives include recommendations to develop new amenities or replace assets that currently exist. All of these projects will necessitate capital expenditures or investments in the community. Other initiatives concern how future communications, surveys and marketing will take place. It is recommended and completely feasible to complete all of the projects noted above and other projects with existing and future Capital Fund money, thereby eliminating any special assessments. Therefore, there should be no concern about an additional financial burden on Association members. However, many of these Initiatives will influence future SCOV amenities, communications, marketing and more. Thus, it is important to, at minimum, pay attention to what transpires in regard to the Initiatives and, at best, become part of the process by joining committees and/or providing input to the committees and the Board. It’s the future of your Community.

We review approximately 10-15 submittals each meeting, and we perform courtesy home inspections at the homeowner’s request in addition to the inspection of the 215 sold homes last year. The approximate 150-plus homes that have been sold this year are inspected as well. We assist homeowners with locating where a satellite dish can be installed within the Standards which still enables good reception. With the holidays only a few weeks away, we will be taking a break. The ARC will only meet the second Tuesday in December to review submittals; however, the rest of the services will still continue. Happy holidays everyone, and if you’re travelling have a safe journey. Consumer Referral

Coffee and Conversation

with the General Manager and a Board Member An informal exchange of information. Thursday, December 18, 10 AM, Activity Center/Hopi Government Affairs

Chair Debra Arrett 825-5703 debra@myfastmail.com Second Wednesday, 3:30 PM, WC1

President of the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson, Judy Moll, had an interesting editorial entitled, Candidates Hide behind Dark Money that Buys Them, in the Arizona Daily Star, November 5. She laments about the same problem the Government Affairs Committee experienced in the 2014 election cycle: the unwillingness of some political candidates to participate in candidate forums. For almost a century the League has sponsored nonpartisan forums to provide citizens the opportunity to be informed voters. The Tucson chapter had to cancel five forums for candidates running for statewide offices. According to the editorial, it was because some candidates in each of the races declined to attend. The SCOV Government Affairs Committee held candidate forums for the Oro Valley Mayoral/Town Council and Arizona District 11 Legislature, Senate and House candidates;. however, we scheduled forum dates for gubernatorial candidates and those running in our district for US Congress. They, too, were cancelled because some candidates declined to participate. Loan Room - Community Assistance

Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Reservation line Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, 8-9 AM, 917-8052 Meetings Third Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

The Loan Room is operated by the Community Assistance Committee and is a free service to SCOV residents. It is funded by recycling of aluminum cans throughout our community and the annual Pancake Breakfast held in January. The Loan Room provides rollaways beds, cots for children, tables and chairs, car seats and some children’s toys. We also loan medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats, etc. We are open from 8-9 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. Reservations can be made at the Loan Room, November-April, or by telephone on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8-9 AM only. Note: You must be able to transport your borrowed items from the Loan Room to your vehicle. If you need additional help, you should make arrangements for that help. The Loan Room personnel/volunteers cannot assist you. You are responsible for transporting the borrowed items. Aluminum can donations: deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees. We need to make sure all new residents are aware of our recycling program, which provides cash for purchasing new equipment, so please, if you have new neighbors, let them know about this program.

Long Range Planning Committee/Ad Hoc LRPC Task Team

Chair Leslie Platt 818-1963 Vice Chair Debra Arrett 825-5703 Second and Fourth Monday, WC3, 2 PM

The LRPC (Long Range Planning Committee’s) Pro Shop Task Team was overjoyed to present its proposal for a new Pro Shop to more than 300 members of our community on November 8. The reaction was very favorable, and there were many helpful questions and suggestions. Those were reviewed at the November meetings, where the Team also discussed its presentation to the Board of Directors at their December meeting. Once this presentation is made, the LRPC’s Café & Lounge Task Team will begin action on its proposal. We encourage your attendance and participation. Marketing and Publicity

Chair Jim Mitchell jtmitch45@gmail.com Fourth Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

At its October meeting, the Board added new responsibilities to the Marketing Committee’s charter. They include developing a plan to assess community sentiment through surveys, consulting with staff to manage a website-based Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) process, proposing improvements to the SCOV website and providing assistance to the Board and committees with communications projects. Because the fourth Thursday of December is Christmas Day, our next meeting will be Thursday, January 8. Neighborhood Pride

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 ‘Tis The Season

We wish you a most happy holiday season. Our community is looking absolutely beautiful, and we should indeed feel proud of the way we look not only to neighbors and ourselves, but also to those individuals who visit with the thought in mind to buy a home and move here. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in helping to make SCOV such a wonderful place to live. Posse

Chair Robert Hefner 825-4825 First Tuesday, 3 PM, Activity Center/Hopi www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/

Sixty-eight members of the Posse were honored at a Service Award breakfast on December 2. There were 19 members who celebrated five years of service in 2014, 30 who celebrated 10 years, 10 with 15 years and nine who have been active members for twenty years. Our community is blessed to have so many residents who are willing to patrol our neighborhoods. They not only help SCOV be the safest community in Oro Valley, but they also call residents who have forgotten to close their garage doors. Open garage doors are invitations to critters and bad guys. If you are not a member of the Posse and are willing to donate as little as twelve hours a year, we encourage you to join us now. Properties

Process Improvement

Process improvement is an aspect of organizational development in which a series of actions are taken to identify, analyze and improve existing business processes within an organization to meet goals and objectives, such as increasing profits and performance, reducing costs and accelerating schedules. This concept resonates with me. Staff is constantly looking for how we might improve a process. Our many committees accentuate this process and assist in identifying opportunities for improvement. Often they develop methods for improvement as well. Our new website maintenance procedure is one of these identified areas that needed improvement. The website refresh task force, along with the new website design company, will be developing this new procedure. It will address topics such as creating tickler files for removing outdated material. It will develop a process for vetting materials that are placed on the website. It will provide an overarching guideline to assess the viability of the website and assist in identifying when it’s time to refresh it. Another area of process improvement was the implementation of a point-of-sale-system in the Administration’s front office. It has created greater accuracy and efficiency in the sales of our tickets, golf passes, etc. The automatic receipt printer has saved a lot of time and helps us provide better customer service. Software called IBS (Integrated Business Systems) is used for our point-of-sale-system in the Café, Pro Shop and now Administration. This year we are focusing on improving our understanding of the Event module with the intent of making our catering and/or golf events more efficient. This module provides functionality that will reserve equipment and document services needed. It provides a calendar for these departments showing the event. It creates contracts and invoices and automates some of the functions in setting up an event within the module. So, as our daily work is being done, we are keeping an eye to how we can improve what we do, all with the intention of providing excellent service to the residents of Sun City Oro Valley.

Holiday Wishes

It’s that time when we reflect on the past year and start to think about New Year’s resolutions. We are lucky to live in a climate that allows outdoor as well as indoor recreation during winter months. New pickleball courts and bocce ball courts might urge you to try them out. Our heated pools are something that not all communities in Arizona have which allows pool useage all year round. Sitting on the covered patio in the winter and enjoying the view and lunch at The Café is always a treat. Golfers get year-round play and enjoy the views. Is it any wonder why we named the golf course The Views? Please look at the facility holiday hours that are listed in this Tipster and on all the bulletin boards. I hope your holidays are happy and the year ahead healthy. Community Services - Katy Mosier

Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs

Pro Shop hours for the holidays: Christmas Eve Day closed at 2 PM. Christmas Day closed. New Year’s Day closed at 2 PM. Happy holidays and happy New Year. In December we are changing our walking signs. Walkers will need to be off the golf course by 7:45 AM. Please do not use the golf course as a cut through to get to the Pro Shop, Café, AFC or Welcome Center. For safety, please use Rancho Vistoso Blvd. Please come in and check our fully-stocked Pro Shop. Residents receive 15% off on all items except golf balls, clubs and sale items. Annual Pass Holders receive 30% off. Just a reminder that our dress code applies to the driving range, chipping area and putting greens. No denim, shirts must have a collar, no cut-offs, gym shorts or swimwear. Also, there is no chipping “above your waist” on the putting green. Please use our chipping area below for those shots. Superintendent - Michael Kropf December is the time of year when the temperatures get cold enough to bring frost. It would be a good time to go over the kind of damage that occurs during frosty mornings and procedures to follow. Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the roughs go dormant and turn brown they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways, tees and greens are damaged. Every cold morning that frost is possible, a message will be left before 6 AM on the frost-delay line stating what the conditions are on the course and how those conditions will impact the golfers. Also, a message will be left on the web page about the details of the delay in case the phone line is busy. If the frost is not bad, we might not have a delay, but golf carts could still be restricted for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe, the delay will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be ready to start play. This year the delays might be significantly longer due to the overseeded apron areas around all the greens. A couple additional reminders: the lower putting green, driving range tee and chipping area all have overseeded grasses so they will also be closed until the Pro Shop is notified of their opening. During this month, the Art League, of which our studio is part, is displaying a new art show in the Activities Center. The theme is Dreams and Emotions which opens the door and the mind to all sorts of free-spirited works. This writer can hardly wait to see the pieces created for this show. The community is heartily invited to share this art work with us. Questions and comments of/to the individual artist are solicited and encouraged. There are surely going to be some for this show. Come and enjoy. Our passion is painting, and that’s what we do each Wednesday. Visit us while we work and who knows, you may get those latent juices flowing.

Open Studio Artists Carol Nagel 825-3097 Thursday, 9 AM-2 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

Pres. Jim Johnson 520-850-8368 Membership Tom and Bonnie Bethea 773-653-4580 Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Mountain View Plaza www.scovaz.com/clubs/cyclists/

While we meet year-round starting in the Mountain View Plaza parking lot (Rancho Vistoso Blvd. at Sun City Blvd.), the coming months are prime time. Cyclists come here from all over the world to experience an unparalleled combination of near perfect weather, amazing desert vistas and excellent infrastructure of bike lanes and dedicated paths. Yet all we Vistoso Cyclists have to do is roll down our driveway. New riders are always welcome to join us in our cycling camaraderie. A monthly schedule of our 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide-variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop. We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands. Tuesday morning our WOW (Women on Wheels) group takes somewhat shorter rides nearer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season. Call Tom or Bonnie Bethea for more information. Vistoso Cyclists partner Wheels for Kids: Donate your seldomused, tax-deductible bicycle to Wheels for Kids. We refurbish such bikes and distribute them to kids and teens, thus giving youth in need the freedom, fun and fitness that results from cycling. See www.azwfk.org to arrange for a drop-off or pickup. Your cash donations are also tax deductible.

Great Books Pres. Barbara Gates 825-7645 VP Jeff Amthor 825-4571 scov.great.books@gmail.com October-May, First and Third Wednesday, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

Our 2014-2015 season is underway and all residents are invited to join us as we discuss Immigrant Voices: 21st Century Stories, an anthology of 18 contemporary short stories written by recent immigrants to the United States (ISBN 978-1939014-65-9). We are presently finishing the Coming Over section of the book, and starting the Being Here section. On December 3, Richard Kopp will lead a discussion of the story Grandmother’s Garden by Meena Alexander, an awardwinning poet who was born in India, grew up in Sudan, studied in England and returned to India to teach. Alexander has been awarded a wide range of fellowships, including ones from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Arts Council of England. She is currently Professor of English at City University of New York. Michelle Brislance will then lead discussion of Otravida, Otravez, by Junot Diaz, on December 17. Diaz, who was born in Dominican Republic, moved to New Jersey as a youngster and completed a graduate degree at Cornell. In 1999, Diaz was named to the list of 20 notable North American fiction writers under the age of 40 by The New Yorker, and his 2007 novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He is currently Professor of Comparative Media Studies/Writing at MIT. No dues during 2014-2015.

SCOV Book Club Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com First Monday, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

At our December meeting we will discuss Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life (steady boyfriend, close family) who barely has been farther afield than her tiny village. She takes a badly-needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe, Will Traynor, who is wheelchair-bound after an accident. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. At our January meeting we will discuss Wild by Cheryl Strayed. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: with no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State, and she would do it alone. Newcomers and guests are always welcome. Bowling League - Pathfinders

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Monday, 9:30-11:30 AM, Welcome Center/WC1

Pres. Al Lichaa 812-0198 Sec./Treas. John Wilson 818-2368 Open Mixed Doubles Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, 8-10 AM Morning Nocturne is part of a twelve-part sonnet sequence by

Jill Bialosky. While the poem adheres to the standard 14 lines in mostly iambic pentameter, it differs considerably from a sonnet by Shakespeare and others who follow strict rhythmic patterns. The language is contemporary American and the subject matter deals with “the absurdities and realities of modern domestic life.” It begins very simply: “I am glad today is dark. No sun...I prefer cumulus on my morning beach run. What more can we worry about?” Her worries include parents getting older, children leaving and a new roof damaged by rain. She fears the “thrashing of the sea in its unrest, the unforgiving cricket. But that’s not it. The current is rising. The dramas are playing out.” The poet amply demonstrates how to update a traditional form and have it speak directly to readers of today. Trying new approaches enhances the dynamism of our weekly meetings. Poker

We’re all warming up for a new racquetball season, full of fast play and good camaraderie. With each annual return, the rackets seem to become smaller and the balls come off the walls faster, but we love this game because it develops good eye/hand coordination and offers high quality exercise. We encourage new players and offer lessons for those interested in learning this sport. Early Music Recorder Ensemble

A new session of classes begins January 8. Improve your balance, flexibility and strength with the physical art of Tai Chi. Most of us think of Tai Chi as a way to prevent falls, improve breathing and reduce stress, but it is so much more. Harvard Medical School Health publication stated that Tai Chi is “medication in motion” and research by Tufts University School of Medicine credits Tai Chi with decreased pain, improved sleep, mood and better quality of life. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life. Why not mark your calendars for January 8 and prepare to join us? Sessions run for eleven weeks and the first class is free. For more information, contact one of our club co-chairs listed above. Tennis
