From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors debra@myfastmail.com December Holidays in the Desert by Debra Arrett There are new names in our phone books and many new faces around our community. Over the past five or six years, 50% of our homes have changed ownership. It is hard to say goodbye to old friends, but the silver lining is the new friends we continue to meet. Regardless if you are newer to SCOV or not, many of us came from other parts of the country often to escape colder weather. When I moved here 16 years ago, the only time I missed the cold and snow was at Christmastime. This may be true of you too, regardless if you celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Bodhi Day, Pancha Ganapati, Mawlid an-Nabi, the Solstice or the Christian holidays (if I left anyone out, it was not intentional and please forgive my oversight). I found it hard to get in the holiday spirit in 70-degree sunny weather. Back in Iowa, we didn’t always have snow on the ground, but we did have to bundle up to go out. It was magic snow if it fell on Christmas Eve or Day and the perfect finishing touch to evergreen trees whether they were decked out with lights or not. If there was snow on the ground, the fresh snow did wonders for urban renewal even in a small Midwestern town. Over the years, I too learned to love the December holidays in the desert, and the memories of past holidays will not be forgotten. Just as life changed and evolved by moving to Arizona, so have holiday traditions. In earlier years there was front-door decorating and the golf cart parade and competition was fierce for both. Those have been replaced by ever-increasing and elaborate outdoor displays brightening both our streets and golf cart paths. A Posse shift is a pure delight in December. The hard work is done without any prizes or recognition, but maybe there should be. My favorite is the neighborhood display on Green Tree Drive. I challenge other streets, neighborhoods and units to consider doing the same. Check the calendar. I look forward to seeing all of you enjoying the Art Festival, Health for the Holidays, the Cookie Exchange or the holiday lights on the golf course or our many streets. All are a perfect way to celebrate the holidays in the desert and bid farewell to 2017.

Kindness is Appreciated Many of you may know that we have an emergency telephone number for emergencies after hours. For police, fire and medical emergencies please call 911. Please use the SCOV emergency number 520-917-3711 after business hours if you have an emergency we can help with. Some of those emergencies may include broken water lines on common areas or reporting unsafe conditions within the common areas and facilities. Here at SCOV I’m particularly proud of the way our residents treat each other and the staff. The Homeowner Handbook ensures that residents take the Code of Conduct seriously. It says, “To protect the ambiance and enjoyment for all those who use SCOV property and interact digitally, the following actions are not permitted against any other member, guest or staff. “• The use of loud, profane, indecent or abusive language, physical abuse, threat, harassment or like activities. “• Actions that result in unsafe conditions or practices, uncivil or discourteous manners, willful misconduct, or actions that unfairly or unreasonably impair the right or privileges of other users. “• Interference with staff functions, procedures, or discipline of staff.” My thanks to all for treating staff so nicely. Especially during the holiday season, we appreciate your many kindnesses.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Desert Oasis Update By the time you read this article, the Desert Oasis project should be complete, including the exterior shower area and final details. This project started with the Desert Oasis Upgrade Committee in November 2016. After listening to the wants and needs of the residents and discussing possible future uses, the committee developed a list of over 80 items that should be addressed, including replacement of all flooring, painting the entire interior, upgrading the water heater, a new kitchen including appliances, an upgraded monitor station and lobby area including a stacked-stone wall with electric fireplace. New chairs were provided for both inside and for the pool area. The interior restrooms were completely upgraded and a new exterior restroom added. The Desert Oasis, built in 1992, had not been remodeled during those 25 years until now. There is a vital sense of community shared by those who use it each day. We hope you enjoy the upgraded and refreshed facility.

These tribute shows feature international performers. I was able to attend a showcase event in Phoenix and could not believe how many HOAs from around the country were there to book these shows. It’s time for fresh entertainment along with a few older requested shows such as Jovert, the steel-drum band. The best part is that you can bring your own drinks and snacks to the show, so you are only paying for entertainment. Please join in; most shows will end up having waiting lists, so get your tickets early.

Since the Friends of the Library cover the cost of supplies, the software contract, Wall Street Journal subscription and other big-ticket items, all of the money collected in the donation box at the circulation desk is spent directly on books, videos, audiobooks and large print books for our collection. New on the fiction shelf we have Artemis, by Andy Weir, bestselling author of The Martian (made into a movie of the same name), which takes us forward in time to life on Artemis, the first city on the moon. Janet Fitch’s highly anticipated historical novel, The Revolution of Marina M., takes the reader back to 1916 Russia on the eve of revolution. Nonfiction fans can now read Amy Tan’s memoir Where the Past Begins and Brian Kilmeade’s Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans: the Battle that Shaped America’s Destiny. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Strength Tracking with LF Connect App LF (Life Fitness) QR codes let users track strength workouts with the LF Connect app simply by scanning the QR codes with a smart phone, iPod and iPad. Each LF code is affixed to a specific Signature Series Single station machine. When scanned, the LF code opens the strength-tracking portion of the LF Connect app which provides accurate calorie calculation based on user weight, workout duration and intensity level. The app offers recommended machine setup based on details about exerciser height and weight and convenient tracking of sets, repetitions and weights. An instructional video shows the correct way to use the machine. If you need help installing this app or setting it up, please see Lonnie Davis at the AFC or call 520-917-8073. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Architectural Review Janice Strassburg 520-338-2568 janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3
As new residents purchase homes in SCOV and current residents see the lovely additions, they are of a mindset that wishes for more space. This additional space is creating a situation in regards to our beloved mountain views. Anything that obstructs a neighbor’s view seems to end up on our Community Services Coordinator’s desk. The Architectural Review Committee cannot deny a request for a home addition as long as it is built within the setbacks as defined in our Development Standards. As a result to this “problem,” ARC is asking our Board of Directors to address the issue in the hopes of finding a solution. As it stands, ARC cannot withhold approval of a home addition if it meets current standards. We are sorry, but Katy Mosier cannot fix the problem nor can ARC. Your suggestions are welcome.

The vote will be electronic unless you have opted out of all electronic communications from the Association. If you vote by hard copy, the ballot must be mailed to Florida (the Association is no longer accepting ballots in the Administrative office). The video candidate interview will be conducted again this year, providing the opportunity for everyone to view and listen to the candidate. This video will be posted to our YouTube channel. In February there will be two forums where questions will be asked of the candidates, and you can get a feel for their understanding of and passion for SCOV. These forums will also be videotaped and posted to YouTube. More details on the candidates and initiatives will be provided as we get closer to the election.

Future Housing Co-Chairs Jon Olson 520-818-3705 jboclo@comcast.net Sally Evert 520-818-3068 sallyevert@gmail.com
The Committee has been working since February 2016 to explore the community’s ideas about what buyers of our homes might want 15 years from now. The purpose is to keep our housing stock attractive and marketable while maintaining our shared values. We believe that we now have the sense of the community and will be presenting a few important recommendations to the Board in January.

Food and Beverage Advisory Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-May, First Fri., 2-3 PM, The Views Terrace A frequently asked question: when’s the best time to have a meal at The Views Restaurant? It depends: looking for fun, crowds, noise and entertainment? Arrive for Friday night happy hour. Come on the hour or half hour in a large group. Plan to wait for drink/food service. Talk with friends and exercise patience while the bartenders try to pour 50-100 drinks at one time. No restaurant can handle that immediately upon arrival, as some customers may expect. Or you can arrive before or after the crowds (3-3:45 or 6:15-6:45), in smaller groups and get faster service. You will not be rushed to leave by 7 PM closing. Also, seating on the patio or dining room is less crowded. If you want a quieter time, try Monday-Thursday late afternoon to evening. Ask the manager for seating in the dining room, even if it looks closed, so wait staff can be assigned to you. Winter residents are arriving and The Views Restaurant is a popular place.

Happy holidays. We are all in a busy time of year. Thankfully, we have a Library where we can find books to help us relax, books to help us decorate and books with recipe ideas. Our annual membership drive will be held in January. Please join Friends of the Library so that we can continue to carry wonderful books (large print, young adult and children’s), DVDs and books on tape. L-r: Bill Norton, Pat Norton and Joan Kelley. Remember the Arts and Crafts festival on Saturday, December 2 (see Coming Events). Find great gift items and enjoy demonstrations. December featured artists are Bill and Pat Norton and Joan Kelley. Bill enjoys wood turning and free-form carving, working with the wood until he is satisfied he has brought out the beauty of the piece. His goal is to never make the same thing twice. Pat offers loom-knitted baby cocoons, hats, booty sets and ruffle scarves to the shop. Selling her items is new for her, because she has always been a donator. For every cocoon set she sells, she donates a set to Seniors for Kids. Joan has been a lifelong photographer, and loves to find the right light to reveal things otherwise missed. Look for her yawning bobcat in the card racks. She is in the Clay Room whenever possible. Her pieces are both hand-built and wheel-thrown, sometimes altered into different forms.
Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell 520-825-5763 Meeting Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/services/loan-room/ The Loan Room is a free service to all SCOV residents. We are open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, for reservations and for pickups and returns. Additional requests for equipment can be made on our website; reservations can be made up to two months in advance. Many of our parttime residents have returned, and the Loan Room is getting busier, so it helps to make reservations in advance. There has recently been some confusion due to the Costume Closet being temporarily housed in the Loan Room space. The Costume Closet is a separate group; Loan Room staff do not have keys to that room and it is not open when the Loan

Marketing Chair Joy Huxtable 520-548-2653 joyeh1115@gmail.com Fourth Mon., 3 PM, WC1
The Marketing Committee continues to focus on ways to promote and support our community. Monthly, staff tracks the progress of our goals in promoting golf, the restaurant and housing sales in relation to direct marketing efforts, special events and Ambassador tours. In 2018, we will be collaborating with the Computer Club to provide hands-on training on how to effectively utilize the SCOV website. The webpage is a great source of information about what is going on in our community, as well as a means to access a variety of other information: e.g., Board agendas and minutes, ARC submittal forms and guidelines, Association financial information, the community phone directory, a consumer referral vendor list, clubs and much more.
Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Here We Are Again Here we are again at the end of our calendar year, and the Neighborhood Pride Committee wishes you a most happy holiday season. Our community is looking absolutely beautiful, and we should indeed feel proud of the way we look; not only to ourselves and our neighbors, but also to those individuals who visit us with the thought in mind to buy and move here. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in helping to make SCOV such a wonderful place in which to live. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you enjoy your families, your friends and neighbors, and especially our beautiful community. ‘Tis the season once again, and the Neighborhood Pride Committee hopes you have a joyous one and a happy New Year.
Posse Chair Larry Clark 520-404-7664 lclarkscov@gmail.com First Tue., 3 PM, Catalina Vista scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)
So far this year, the Posse has found over 800 garage doors open during our nightly neighborhood patrols. These are an open invitation to the possible theft of tools, golf clubs, or more likely the entrance of unwanted reptiles and animals. This is why we call you and ask you to close your garage door. To do this every night, we need more volunteers on the SCOV Posse. Please consider becoming a member. If you are a Posse member, and a winter resident who has just returned, let your Squad Leader know you are back and available for a patrol assignment.

One of the objectives in the Properties Committee Charter is to monitor and make recommendations regarding energy efficiency for the common areas and Association facilities. Over the past several years the committee has conducted studies and made a number of recommendations that have reduced the Association’s use of electricity. Examples in-

clude installation of LED lighting at the pickleball courts, the racquetball court in the AFC and the Auditorium in the Activity Center. LED lighting uses less electricity and has longer useful life compared to conventional lighting. In addition to using less electricity, these lighting retrofits provided added cost savings due to decreased maintenance requirements and reduced cooling loads for the indoor projects. The committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. If you are interested in the activities of the Properties Committee, please plan to attend our next meeting Thursday, December 21.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086 One of our top priorities for the golf operation is to make booking a starting time as simple as possible for all golfers. Since my first day at The Views Golf Club, I have studied the history and playing patterns of groups and individual
golfers. Once the decision was made to transition from a lottery booking system to an actual tee time reservation system, it was evident to me that our priority would be to simplify the booking process for any groups larger than 12 players. With that being said, we fully understand that individuals wanting only to book one starting time might feel that it was unfair to them and that they should have the same right to schedule a time as any group. I do agree with that point, and that is why we save starting times for those individual bookings as well. The only difference is we don’t place names on the tee sheet ahead of time as we do for the groups. Starting time reservations may be reserved nine days out for pass holder and seven days for residents, beginning at 6 AM. This yield management strategy for the tee sheet allows us to prepare well in advance, maximize the number of starting times to be utilized whether playing 9 or 18 holes, manage outside public play and control the pace of play more efficiently. I am passionate about tradition, however, always seeking new ways to improve and not afraid to ask for assistance both to deliver results and add value. I believe in stepping outside the traditional box of doing things and trying new ways to attain our goals. I believe that my role is to effectively communicate to you how we can mutually align to meet the mission, the vision and overall business philosophy of The Views Golf Club.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 December is historically the time of year when the temperatures get cold enough to start bringing frost. It would be a good time to go over what kind of damage occurs during frosty mornings and the procedures to follow during these cold mornings. Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the roughs go dormant and turn brown they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways, tees and greens can be damaged. Every cold morning that frost is possible a message will be left before 6 AM on the frost delay phone line stating what the conditions are on the course and how those conditions will impact the golfers. Also, a there will be a frost message on The Views Golf Club web page. If the temperature is cold, but the frost is not that bad we might not have a delay, but instead the golf carts could be restricted to the cart path for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe and requires a delay it will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be prepared for golf and for play to start. Mowing of the greens and moving the pins needs to be done before golfers can begin play. A couple additional reminders are the putting green, driving range tee, and chipping area all have overseeded grasses so they will also be closed until the Pro Shop is notified of their opening.
Golf Advisory Chair Yvette Schulz 520-825-0797 Sep.-May, First Wed., 2 PM, WC3
The Golf Advisory Board is looking forward to helping our Director of Golf, Rick Price, implement some new programs at The Views. Some of the possible programs include: Beginners Golf Program that includes instruction and play of the golf course; Casual Golf Group; Couples Golf; Putting League and chipping and putting events on the golf course. In November, a Golf Fiesta was held to welcome back our golfers who were gone for the summer. The Views also held an Adult Junior Miniature Golf Championship on November 25. It has been reported that balls have been found in yards past the end of the driving range. If you hit your driver 300 yards, please do not use your driver on the range. If you have any questions or concerns about the golf course, please contact your league representative or Yvette Schulz.

The Art League is currently displaying a theme show entitled “Inspired by Music” in the Activity Center. We were given large latitude on this show, hence, there’s quite a variety of paintings adorning the walls. We wish everyone a very happy holiday season.

Japanese flower arranging (Ikebana) is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace, and make creative arrangements for your home.

If you’re not already a monitor and want to help out, please contact Don Jovag 520-818-1078 for orientation and training. One of our veteran members and past club president, Don Coleman, has just finished a very time consuming and labor intensive project for The Views Restaurant. His project was to construct 18 beautiful segmented exotic wood serving boards with laser engraved custom labels. Not to be out done, John Njaa, another veteran woodworker and past club president, just completed 150 baltic birch menu covers to be used at the restaurant. These are just two of the many woodworkers who donate their time and expertise for the good of our community. Stop by the restaurant and see how these are being used. At our meeting December 4, we will discuss: Commonwealth by Ann Patchett. In what she calls “her first autobiographical novel,” Ann Patchett draws on experiences from her own life in a “blended” family. She describes what happens when an illicit affair breaks up two families and recombines them as the guilty partners pursue a new marriage with two unrelated sets of children. The book follows the life of the intertwined family over the course of five decades and chronicles the disruptions and relationships that develop. Note: Our January meeting date changed from January 1 to January 10, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon Room, due to the New Year’s holiday. The book to be discussed is Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. The story is set in the U.S.A. and spans several decades. It’s based on the true life story of a woman who ran an orphanage under the guise of a charity. Children were snatched from poor families and then “sold” for adoption to wealthy families. You will recognize the names of some of her famous clients.

Surely, every one of us has practiced the art of procrastination. Poets may use this tactic when they think they’ve lost their muse. SCOV poet Pearl Joseph seems to belie what she writes in this wonderful sonnet that echoes Shakespeare: “I spend my time as foolish as a child / not doing all the things I ought to do / Saturday I read—my soul beguiled / and finished guilty and so full of rue There’s no one home to chide my wayward act / berate me so my writing I begin / Self-starting always was my common lack / and dawdling in a book my frequent sin I vowed that on the morrow I would do / all those obligations shunned today / On Sunday morning I would start anew / and make up all the work that I’d delayed But Sunday came and brought the New York Times / and so I read instead of writing rhymes.”

Dinners will be held in December, January, February and March as well as our midterm luncheon scheduled for February 22 and our closing dinner on March 28. Each dinner has different participants determined by our scheduling secretaries so you are getting to know new friends. Two to four weeks before your dinner, your group will gather with the host(s) to determine a menu within the theme. The host usually provides the main course and the guests bring the side dishes and dessert. Recipes are shared so you can enjoy them again. If you would like more information on how it works or would like to join in and enjoy very creative meals, contact Alan.

Fall is here and it’s time to combat your holiday stress by exercising. Twice a week we have a professional instructor come to SCOV and teach a Joseph Pilates mat class. The Pilates exercises work to strengthen your core as well as your entire system of bones and joints and are not just sets of simple exercises. Your abdominal muscles, arms, back, hips and more are strengthened and toned. This allows for better posture, flexibility, strength and balance. The classes are one-hour total body workouts and include many warmup stretches. Because these are Pilates mat classes for seniors, all exercise movements can be modified for different levels of performance. Our instructors are very helpful with this. The cost is only $8/class and the annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch one of our classes. Call Mary with questions.

This winter, do what retired cookies do. It is rumored that retired cookies like to kick back and enjoy life with new friends, parties, travel, events, and hot cocoa. And if they could talk, they’d say “bah” to doing winter chores. Well, the residents at Fairwinds - Desert Point Retirement Community wholeheartedly agree. And you can join them! Call (520) 314-5141 to schedule your complimentary lunch and tour—you smart cookie, you.
