All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Welcome. It’s Good to See You. by George Williams There’s some weird old guy in our neighborhood who waves at every passing car when he’s walking around on our sidewalks. He even greets workmen, Waste Management trucks and the guys that do our landscaping. I’ve noted that he similarly salutes Association employees when they go by. I asked him why and he told me that our corner of Sun City Vistoso is filled with really friendly people and he wants everyone going through to know that. He told me that surely some of those passersby are selling vacuum cleaners or are fly-by-night house painters. It doesn’t matter to him. He welcomes every last soul that he can. Almost all of them wave back with a smile. I’ve tried following his lead. It makes me feel good. People who are accustomed to being ignored are seemingly delighted to be greeted. Those of us who live here already know how neighborly it is. Maybe it’s a shock to people passing through or to those who have lived here only a short time. I imagine that when the grandkids visit they get a whole new perspective on how comfortably we’re living and how much we enjoy it. I’ve lived in cities where you didn’t dare acknowledge a stranger, let alone greet them. It works so well and makes me feel so good that I’m going to visit the people that moved in last October nine houses up and across the street. Why haven’t I done that sooner? We may not develop a fierce friendship but it will make us both happier when we see each other passing by. Sun City Vistoso is a very pleasant place to live.
Please Note
N.W. Exterminating will be spraying the common area grounds with a pre-emergent on Tuesday, February 7; Friday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 14. Do not allow your pets to get into the areas that are still wet. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, February 2012

Questioning the Aquatic and Fitness Center Project Voting Process by Bob Mariani
During the past couple of months, I have heard various comments or questions regarding the integrity of the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) voting process. For example, one member asked: How do we know that the ballot count for the AFC project will be performed honestly? Another Association member commented: I’m very concerned that the votes on the AFC proposal will not be accurately tallied. I had to consider seriously writing about this issue as it somewhat surprises and disappoints me that there is such suspicion and distrust, not for strangers who may personally gain from dishonest actions, but for neighbors and peers who may or may not share your opinions about the AFC project and who certainly have nothing to personally gain from any dishonest action. However, I thought it important to at least attempt to provide information about the voting process that will ease one’s thoughts that the ballot count will be anything but accurate and honest. Please refer to Robin Coulter’s article in this Tipster that explains the excellent, accurate and very open balloting process that will be used. As you will see, every step in the balloting is designed to result in accuracy and the privacy of your vote. However, the most important aspect of this process is that the ballot tally is completely open to the membership for their observations. Therefore, if there is any suspicion of impropriety or you just like watching a ballot tally, you have the right to oversee this process and see firsthand that the ballot count is being handled properly.

Board Candidates Answer Questions Ab 1. What is your vision
1. What is your vision
To remain a premier retirement community with relaxed residents who want to remain active and enjoy the amenities offered by SCV.
SCV needs to be the first place that baby boomers and seniors look at in southern Arizona when they are ready to retire and begin the next phase of their lives. One of the ways this can be accomplished is by expanding the marketing efforts of the staff. They have done Lou Gard an excellent job of following up with people who have inquired about SCV with our auto-response email campaign, but we must continue to expand our outreach. It is important for our residents that SCV remain one of the premier age-restricted communities in Southern Arizona. Our Views Golf Course, our tennis courts, Craft Complex and other facilities are second to none. We need to maintain them in first class condition and work to make improvements where needed, at the same time remaining fiscally responsible.
for the future of SCV?
Jan Fischer
2. Why do you want to serve as a Board Member and what do you view as your highest priority?
As a member of the Board I can serve my community, by being fiscally responsible and listening to residents’ concerns and questions. No two people are ever going to agree on every issue. The object is to reach common ground to reasonable resolutions with the ability to listen to all sides of an issue before forming an opinion and not to have a negative view of a situation until all facts are known. 3. What do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected?
I am familiar with real estate and construction industry standards and regulations. I have experience and knowledge with cost accounting of construction projects and familiarity with Arizona Revised Statutes governing all aspects of homeowners association regulations as well as real estate rules and regulations in general. for the future of SCV?
2. Why do you want to serve as a Board Member and what do you view as your highest priority?
Coming to the Board with an agenda would not serve the Board, the community or myself well. SCV has over six million dollars in revenue from HOA dues, golf, Café and other income. My experience in business both as an owner and manager will allow me to make good judgements keeping us on a fiscally sound basis. We must look at expenditures from a cost/benefit perspective. The cheapest method of accomplishing a goal is not always the best. My highest priority is to keep all of our facilities in a first class condition. 3. What do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected?
I try to be pragmatic and look at all sides of an issue prior to making a decision, thus my previous comment about not bringing an agenda with me. I do not rile under pressure and will give other Board members a common courtesy, though we may disagree on a particular proposal. We all have had many life experiences that when blended with others with different life experiences allows the board to make wise decisions that will benefit SCV. bout Sun City Vistoso 1. What is your vision for the future of SCV?
Sun City Vistoso is unique: a beautifully maintained, vibrant, distinctive, friendly, welcoming and genuinely comfortable community in a breathtaking setting. We are a community of forward-minded neighbors who support continuing improvements to keep us current and attractive—Café, administraSteve Knapp tion building, golf course, arts and crafts area, and now weighing expansion of the Aquatic & Fitness Center. I believe our goals should be to appreciate, honor and conserve the core character of our very special community, to nurture ideas and options that can enhance and protect home values. To me this means finding creative ways to responsibly maintain and enhance what we have here. 2. Why do you want to serve as a Board Member and what do you view as your highest priority?
The governing structure of SCV—the interaction of our Board and staff, and particularly the volunteer efforts of our many committees is of great interest. I have interviewed past and current Board members and staff members, reviewed volumes of background information and reports, attended Board Meetings/Study Sessions, as well as many key committee meetings. I am active on the Marketing Committee, support Friends of the Library, and belong to the Men’s 9-Hole Golf Club. My highest priority: understanding … to gain balanced perspectives of resident opinions and interests. My second priority: fiscal objectivity … to identify solutions that support and fairly serve the interests of all residents. My third priority: communications … to engage all residents in the development of solutions/actions. 3. What do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected?
As a business owner for more than three decades, I understand managing financial resources for an organization like SCV. And, because my work involved providing consultation and communications services to 35+ significant national non-profit associations, I can bring many parallel experiences to bear for SCV for budgeting, strategic planning, communications, marketing, fundraising and member support. As a member of the Executive Board of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation—with 21,000 supporting members— and Chair of a public awareness committee of opinionated health professionals for the Wisconsin Department of Health, I developed the teamwork and conflict resolution skills that are especially important for Board service. You will have an opportunity to vote in the upcoming Association election. Ballots will be mailed on February 21. By now, a package containing an informational DVD, an explanatory booklet, and an invitation to come to a public forum should have been delivered to your home. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. In January we delivered 540 pounds of aluminum cans which netted the CAC $324. Fiscal year-to-date we have received a total of $1,887. The CAC provides aid to the community through the Loan Room located at the end of the Cart Barn which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. We have equipment to help with medical needs, tables and chairs for parties and equipment for children. Our aim is to help you in times of need or visits from family and friends and keep you from having to store these items. Over the winter we will be evaluating how much our equipment has been used and make adjustments to our inventory. Since our space is limited, we want to provide items that are the most requested. The Loan Room is funded through donations, profits from the recycling of aluminum cans, and the annual Pancake Breakfast. Thank you to all who came out for the Pancake Breakfast in January. We appreciate your support. Conservation and Energy Committee Co-Chairs Beverly Browne 825-2921 and Ed Kennedy 825-3659 First and Third Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui
Don’t Put Flourescent Bulbs in Your Trash! All fluorescent light bulbs, tubular or compact, contain trace quantities of mercury and are considered to be hazardous waste. It is important to keep them from contaminating our landfills which are for household trash. There are three convenient places to take them for recycling: 1. The Pima County Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility on Sweetwater Drive, just north of Prince Road at the corner of the I-10 Frontage Road Southbound. Fridays and Saturdays, 10 AM-Noon. 2. The Home Depot Store on Oracle Road, just north of First Avenue. Take them to the Returns Desk and put the CFLs in the CFL disposal bin and hand the long bulbs to the clerk. They also have a disposal bin for rechargeable (NiCad, NMH, and Lithium Ion) batteries. 3. Ace Hardware Stores. Take them to the Service Desk at the back of the stores, and hand them to the returns clerk. As part of the twelve-year plan to update our community’s landscape and aging irrigation system, the firm of Kimley-Horn was hired to design a plan for the Mountain Vista area. This project runs along the northeast side of Rancho Vistoso beginning at Silverton and extending southeast down and around Vistoso Center. It includes mini-golf, the lion’s head fountain, parking lot islands and plantings around portions of Mountain Vista Recreation Center (Social Hall), the Craft Complex, the Café and the tennis courts. Kimley-Horn will present the proposed design to the Board of Directors at their February 9 Study Session. The time of the presentation will be available when the agenda for that meeting is published. Grass? Yes, we do have grass coming up in some private yards in the community. It needs to be sprayed with highly concentrated weed killer in order to get rid of it. Our rains in December are mainly the cause of all the unwanted growth in our yards this past month. Next time you are out at your mailbox, take a look. Could it use a fresh coat of paint? Now that our weather is cooler, perhaps it’s time to paint the pole, box and flag. Check with Consumer Referral for names of people who will do it for you at a nominal cost, if you would rather not do it yourself. Another item that needs mentioning, as it is the responsibility of the homeowner, is raised sidewalks. If the cement is raised where someone walking could trip and fall, it needs to be repaired. More often than not, the raised area is caused by a large root from a tree in the yard. Please take a look. Is yours okay? The Strategic Projects Committee met in January and approved the final draft of the updated status report of the Strategic Initiatives. The draft was presented at the January Board Study Session. Article Submission Deadline Move for March Tipster
For the coming month’s production for the March Tipster we would like to request all Club articles be in by February 8th instead of the 10th. This is because we have the President Day holiday in February which causes the Tipster production days to be tight. This is an issue four months of the year; November, December, January and February where we have early production deadlines due to holiday(s) occurring in these months. We also would like to remind you that any club Tipster articles that arrive after the 10th of the month will not be included in the edition. Robin Coulter, Assistant Manager Forums, Ballots & Validations
During the month of February the Election Committee will conduct three Board of Director Candidate Forums. These forums will be Thursday, February 9, 6:30 PM; Wednesday, February 15, 11 AM, and Tuesday, February 21, 3 PM, all in the Auditorium. Please attend and be informed about the position these candidates have on issues important to you and the Association. On Tuesday, February 21, the ballots will be mailed to all homeowners. There will be two ballots. One ballot is for the Board candidates and the other one is for approval of an assessment to be used to expand and renovate the Aquatic & Fitness Center. Also starting in February and continuing through March, the Election Committee will be validating ballots. The ballot validation process is as follows: Homeowners receive two ballots, a white BALLOT envelope and a blue envelope. Homeowners mark their ballots, February 2012, Sun City Vistoso Tipster
8
seal them in the white BALLOT envelope and then seal that envelope in the blue envelope on the outside of which they record their names and unit/lot numbers. This blue envelope is then mailed or placed in the locked ballot box at the Vistoso Center. On the ballot validation dates, the Election Committee removes the blue envelopes from the ballot box. They then cross check the unit/lot numbers and names against the membership list of eligible voters and place a check opposite the eligible voters’ names to indicate a ballot has been received. If a subsequent ballot is received for the same unit/lot, it is discarded. Once the ballot has been validated the blue envelope is opened and the sealed BALLOT envelope is placed back in the locked ballot box in bundles of 25 to be counted on Tuesday, March 27. This process validates that individuals are eligible to vote (blue envelope with unit/lot and name) AND it ensures that the vote is received anonymously (white envelope containing the ballot with no identification). The blue envelopes are kept as well according to the guidelines in the governing documents. All residents are welcome to observe the validation process. See the bulletin board for ballot validation dates. Pam Sarpalius, Programs/Facilities Director Enjoy Tucson
February is a great time for some great events in Tucson. The Gem Show, Rodeo and Golf Match Play Tournament are all big events to enjoy. If you are new to Arizona or SCV you may want to attend one or all of these events. If you have lived here for a while, you may want to revisit some of these. Don’t forget to dress Western during Rodeo Week (February 20-26). We love seeing residents walking around or attending club meetings in Western clothes. Also this is Arizona’s Centennial year, so celebrate our Western heritage. SCV also will have great entertainment with the appearance of the Dusty River Boys and a casino trip on Valentine’s Day. While some parts of the country are counting the days until winter is over, we are enjoying fun in the sun. Jim Cundiff - Community Services SCV Common Area Landscape Responsibilities
The Common Area Landscape Maintenance (CAM) staff maintains the following: • The five-foot fire barrier around each lot • Golf course views only for those homes listed by SCVCAI as having a golf course view Golf Course View Guidelines: Unless neighbors join together, the area covered by this program is defined to be that within an extension of lot lines. Thus it may be that the golf course view of any given homeowner may not include green grass, if, for example, their view is of an area where there is no green grass, such as between the tee boxes and the fairway. The view to be considered is that from the lot line at eye level when standing. Within the guidelines stated above and with the goal of providing an aesthetic natural landscape for all who walk or play the golf course, trimming of vegetation will be done in such a way as to try to provide at least a 50% unobstructed view of the golf course for those homeowners with legal view rights that want Sun City Vistoso Tipster, February 2012

You know staying physically active can help keep your body young even though the calendar says you’re getting older. A new study from the University of Pittsburgh suggests that the more you move, the longer you’ll be able to live independently. Please leave the handle outside the bunker and the head of the rake inside the bunker. Please remember to rake the bunkers before you exit them. Leave the sand smooth for the next player. Finally, I want to remind everyone that athletic wear; tee shirts, tank tops, short shorts and blue jeans are not permitted when using the golf facilities. Please remember these requirements when coming to use the practice facilities or inviting your friends out. Michael Kropf, Superintendent
The golf course is really looking good with the roughs going dormant and providing the contrast between the dark green fairways and brown roughs. The greens are rolling smooth and quick. The new traps look great and are starting to mature. However, looking around the golf course, there are many areas of concern regarding lack of etiquette from the golfers. Unrepaired ball marks are becoming a problem on the greens, sand traps have many footprints that aren’t raked, and divots aren’t being fixed on tees and fairways. One of the biggest complaints is the footprints in the traps. The golf course maintenance staff rakes the traps almost daily, so the footprints are coming from golfers playing during the day. The traps used to be so hard that they didn’t need to be raked, but the new sand is very soft showing all imperfections. The etiquette is for a golfer to leave a trap the way they would want it when they hit their ball into the sand. The greens are soft so all shots into the greens will leave a mark. There is still a ball mark even when the ball rolls to the back of the green. Golfers don’t seem to be looking for where the ball actually hit the green, so the fronts of the greens are getting bad. Please remember to follow standard etiquette to keep the golf course in great shape. The little things make all the difference between an average golf course and an elite golf course. Golf Advisory Payton Davies Chair 825-5352 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache
This is the time of year when we can really appreciate the name of our golf course, The Views. We want everyone to have a good experience here, and one way to do that is for every golfer to do his/her part in maintaining the bunkers. We possibly got into bad habits when the bunkers were hard and crusty. Contrary to popular opinion, no one has been given permission to not rake the sand after they have been in a bunker. The bobcats have not learned to rake after themselves, but we can learn. Please enter and exit a bunker from the low side, and rake your way out of the bunker. Also, we would

like you to leave the rakes with the handle out of the bunker and the rake part in the bunker. Thank you for your help.

Feature Do you have any neighbors here in SCV who can legitimately claim to be teenagers? by Sally Evert
If we measure age by birthdays, Rebecca Long can! She’s a Leap Day baby, so she will be celebrating a birthday this year, with several birthdays to go before she exits her teenage years. Rebecca and her cohorts are called leapers. As we know, leap years are needed to keep our Gregorian calendar in alignment with the earth’s revolutions around the sun. It’s estimated that roughly one in 1,500 babies will make their debut on Leap Day. The 2000 US Census showed that about 200,000 Americans are leapers. From the very beginning, Rebecca’s parents told her that she was special because of her birthday, and she believed it. Her family always made huge events of her February 29th birthday, including lots of planning and several celebrations. She is an upbeat, optimistic person who appears to make the best of any situation. When she was in college, she took full advantage of the confusion of the off-years by claiming her birthday for several days, being rewarded with free beers at local bars on those birthdays. Today she still believes that it is special to have a Leap Year birthday. She feels as if she is aging more slowly because she has fewer birthdays than her peers. After meeting her, I wouldn’t argue with her assertion! If you run into Rebecca on February 29, wish her a happy birthday.

Imagine being the subject of a very readable biography centuries after you carried on affairs of state, as well as of the heart. Join us February 7 as Eileen Rotman leads our discussion of Stacy Schiff’s Cleopatra. March 5 we’ll turn to twentieth century Czechoslovakia and examine Simon Mawer’s The Glass Room guided by Bea Leonard. The Landauer house is a modernist home built for a young couple who struggle to make a success of their marriage and their lives. The glass room in this house and the effects it has on successive occupants is an integral part of an intriguing novel. Refreshments are served following our discussion and newcomers are welcome to participate. Great Books Pres. Syrile Ellison 818-6521 October-April, First and third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Tohono
The famous Roman poet Ovid had strong feelings about the sin of Sloth; “Thou seest how sloth wastes the sluggish body, as water is corrupted unless it moves.” On February 1 we will discover how this sin is depicted in Bobbie Ann Mason’s short story “Shiloh”. Reading and discussing great literature would surely rank high on Ovid’s list of worthy pursuits. “An intriguing paradox of the 1990s is that it isn’t called a decade of greed,” says Paul Samuelson, author of a college textbook on economics. “What’s in a name?” you might ask. Perhaps it’s important to call a thing what it is, to identify a problem and then devise a cure. Find out more about Greed February 15 as we explore its ramifications in “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome to join our animated discussions and partake of delicious treats.

The Gun Club is for people who have an interest in learning about guns, shooting, personal protection and firearm safety. In fact, you do not even need to own a gun or have any experience with firearms to come to Gun Club meetings. We especially invite women, who are interested in learning about firearms safety and self-protection with or without a gun, to attend. People are frequently interested in learning the laws and regulations about carrying a gun, and what is required to obtain an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Club members are encouraged to bring any new or interesting guns/accessories to the meeting for people to see or any guns they want to sell/trade. For safety, any gun brought to the meeting needs to be unloaded and have a trigger lock or plastic strip lock. At some meetings we have guest speakers from law enforcement or other gun-related organizations. You are invited to come to a meeting and see if our club activities would interest you. Club members often shoot on Thursday afternoons.

SFK earns rewards based on the amount of money spent on each card. To purchase a card or for more information, call Jean Sax 818-2410 or talk with any Senior for Kids member. At present the Writers club’s only organized activities are in poetry. Please see the Poet’s Corner below. Poets’ Corner
Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui
In the words of Eli Khamarov, “Poets are soldiers that liberate words from the steadfast possession of definition.” Those of us taking this year’s facilitated workshop have been soldiering on since last month, hopefully, resulting in a good deal of liberation. As of Monday, February 20, we will welcome all SCV poets who wish to join us in the pursuit of writing poems. Several members of our group are also accomplished photographers and a special collaborative effort is planned for Wednesday, February 8, 6:30 PM, Catalina Vista sponsored by the Vistoso Photo Club showcasing the talents of both groups. This event will feature poetry inspired by selected photos. Non-members are welcome to attend.
Yoga Pres. Jewel Prendeville 520-395-1356 Mondays, 8:30-10 AM, Social Hall/Papago Tuesdays, 10:30 AM-Noon, Vistoso Center/Apache Thursdays, 7-8:15 PM, Social Hall/Dance Studio
As you set your sights on health and well-being this new year, the Yoga Club offers three opportunities to keep those resolutions. We have Monday classes with Maria at 8:30 AM, Tuesday with Sue at 10:30 AM and Thursday evening with Kathy at 7 PM. Yoga postures, breath work and relaxation combined in a yoga session offer many positive health benefits. You’ll increase flexibility, strength and balance while reducing the negative impact of stress. We welcome you to come experience it for yourself.
