Association News

From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Things to Consider by Susan Jakosa February is the month that the Election Committee schedules the annual Board of Director‘s Candidate Forums. This year we again have a highly qualified group of candidates who have volunteered to run for two openings on the Board of Directors that begin in May. Personally, I am grateful to each one of them for making this commitment. The forums will be held in the Auditorium on Thursday, February 5, 6:30 PM and Tuesday, February 10, 9 AM. Please show your support for these candidates. Attending a forum to listen to the answers, thoughts and ideas of the candidates on those questions presented by the Election Committee will certainly assist residents in making their decision on whom to vote for in March when the ballots are mailed out. Overall, the Election Committee meets from November through March. Along with approximately 25 other SCOV committees and the Board, our volunteer committees met more than 300 times during 2014. Looking at those numbers, it is clear that our resident volunteers are an absolute necessity to sustain the multiple functions that each committee performs. Without the work that the committees do, we might not be who we are today or who we may want to be in the future. New ideas, together with diversified opinions and past experiences from our volunteers, are a major and invaluable contribution to this community. If you will consider being a committee volunteer, this is the time of year that one might easily do some research on existing committees. Most committees have three-year terms, meet once or twice a month, often not during the summer and have no restrictions on full or part-time residency. Our Association website includes charters specifying the objectives for each committee along with a committee application that may be completed online. One of the online calendars also lists committee meetings with times and locations, all of which are open to residents. Your attendance at some meetings may give you an even better perspective on how those committees function. Think about it. Your involvement is clearly a positive asset for our community.

General Manager - Bob Mariani

What Is In Store for SCOV? Looking back at 2014, I can state without a doubt that it was a very busy and rewarding year. Now we’re already a month into 2015, and it doesn’t appear that there will be a slowdown. Some items from last year that are still in process are the work on nearly 30 Board initiatives that were generated through the Strategic Projects Committee. These initiatives concern the Café and golf operations, communications and various projects. One of these initiatives concerns the new Pro Shop which is in the design process and planned for construction this summer. Other initiatives regard the development of a lounge and the updating of the Activity Center. The Long Range Planning Committee Task Team is currently working on the lounge design. When the Task Team is complete with that project, the Activity Center will be the focus. The desire with all of these projects is to help enhance the amenities and enjoyment for the residents plus provide updated facilities that prospective residents desire. Another project that is in the midst of discussion is an update of the Desert Oasis. No exact plans are in place yet, but there is a need for paint, flooring, new or refreshed counters and, if feasible and affordable possibly inside showers in the restrooms will be included in the project. If all goes well, work on the Desert Oasis will take place this summer. In addition to the various issues and projects noted above, new exterior lighting will be installed on the common area buildings; new house paint colors are under development; and the 2015-2016 Association Budget is in process. Since the Board’s desire is to not have the dues increase this next fiscal year, the Administration will have a challenge developing a sound draft budget. This article is not intended to include a comprehensive list of all that will transpire over the next several months but is intended to give you a sound idea of what is to come. On top of the activities noted, other projects are certain to come along and routine daily tasks will be never-ending.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle... in Sun City Oro Valley Changing the Wiring...Solar Power Is Becoming Mainstream by Paul Mercer Gary and Carolyn Lerch say, “It seems like the right thing to do. If it’s not a good idea here in Arizona, where else would it be? Energy efficiency is very important to us. Shortly after installing the solar panels, we had new windows installed to keep our home cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter. And it is working...we are very happy with our investment.” Raymond and Nadia Sand, who moved here just this year, explain, “It cuts the electric bill to almost nothing, it is good for the environment and it’s kind of neat. That’s enough for me.” The Sun City Oro Valley properties committee is exploring the feasibility of building 96 carport-type structures with solar panels in the Welcome Center parking lot to cover the electrical needs of the administration areas. The existing structures cannot support the weight of solar panels. A big plus if this works out would be parking our cars under cover to keep them from cooking in the sun while we tend to our golfing and library visits. Chair Sharon Hertle 818-2558 First Wednesday, WC1, 11:30 AM www.afc@suncityorovalley.com

The newly established AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center) committee has been meeting since September of 2014. This committee was established to listen to resident suggestions and to research potential opportunities related to our current facilities, equipment and classes in the Aquatic & Fitness Center and the Desert Oasis pool. Since September the AFC committee has carefully discussed and considered suggestions related to adding select pieces of additional gym equipment, slippage in the locker rooms, benches for the showers and ongoing requests to adjust the temperature in the AFC. Your comments, input and suggestions can be written and placed in the Suggestion Box in the AFC lobby or you can email us at afc@suncityorovalley.com. Architectural Review

Awnings do a great job of shielding our windows from the brutal Arizona sun, but awnings only last so long before they become victims of the sun, too. If you are thinking of having awnings installed or replacing those that are tired and worn, please ensure that your replacement is a solid fabric and matches your house or trim color. Forums, Ballots and Validations

During the month of February the Election Committee will conduct two Board of Directors Candidate Forums. These forums will be Thursday, February 5, 6:30 PM and Tuesday, February 10, 9 AM, both in the Auditorium. Please attend and be informed about the position these candidates have on issues important to you and the Association. On Tuesday, February 17 the ballot will be mailed to all homeowners. You will be voting for the Board of Directors. There are two positions for Board of Directors, each for a three-year term. You may cast two votes. Also starting in February and continuing through March the

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, February 2015

Election Committee will be validating ballots. The ballot validation process is as follows: • Homeowners receive their ballots, a white ballot envelope and a blue envelope. Residents mark their ballots, seal them in the white ballot envelope and then seal that envelope in the blue envelope on the outside of which they record their name and unit/lot. This blue envelope is then mailed or placed in the locked ballot box. • On the ballot validation dates, which are posted on the bulletin boards, the Election Committee checks the unit/lot and name against the membership list of eligible voters. A check is placed beside the eligible voter’s name to indicate a ballot has been received. The blue envelope is opened and the sealed ballot envelope is removed. The sealed ballot envelopes are placed in bundles of 25 to be counted. The counting will be done on Tuesday, March 24 at which time the ballot envelopes are opened. This process validates that individuals are eligible to vote (blue envelope with unit/lot and name) and it ensures that the vote is received anonymously (white envelope containing the ballot with no identification). The blue envelopes are kept as per the governing documents for a specified period of time. All residents are welcome to observe the validation process. See the bulletin board for ballot validation dates. Finance-Budget

Featured artists are Carmelita and Darrell Martin and Jane Fairchild. Carmelita began working with gourds by painting some she had grown, and then began using traditional techniques like burning and carving designs onto the gourds. This led to additions of inlays, beads and other objects. Darrell started making jewelry because, he “married a lady whose family were rockhounds”. He started cutting gemstones they found, then needed to make settings for the stones. Darrell’s art has evolved to making pieces that feature symbolic images. Jane makes Fiber Flings, which are lightweight yarn and bead necklaces. They are made of various types of novelty yarns and are finished with coordinating beads and an easy magnetic clasp. Fiber Flings have the fluffiness of a scarf, without difficulty tying them. Come and find the new book featuring our artists to see just who makes everything you see in the shop.

Government Affairs

Chair Debra Arrett 825-5703 debra@myfastmail.com Second Wednesday, 3:30 PM, WC1 Not Going To Happen Here? Be Aware! Be Prepared!

What would you do if there were an earthquake here? While rare, it is possible. The 1887 Sonoran Earthquake was a magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale. Watching the report on the terrorist attacks in France, did you think about it happening here? We certainly hope we never have to face unexpected natural disasters or security threats, but we all need to be prepared. Mark your calendar to attend an event sponsored by your Government Affairs Committee: Wednesday, February 18, 2 PM, Auditorium. Guest speakers include Navy Captain Robert Stone (retired): speaking on border issues that pose a threat and resources at the county level. Oro Valley Police Department Chief Danny Sharp’s topic includes actual incidents and issues in Oro Valley and preparedness, tools and communication/collaboration plans. SCOV General Manager Bob Mariani will address SCOV’s preparedness, an overview of the communication plans and suggestions for resident preparedness. Governing Documents Review Committee The committee will present a forum February 3, 1 PM, Auditorium about the proposed changes to our Articles of Incorporation. Approval by a community vote is required. See Coming Events for details. Loan Room - Community Assistance

Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Reservation line Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, 8-9 AM, 917-8052 Meetings Third Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

The Loan Room is operated by the Community Assistance Committee and is a free service to SCOV residents. It is funded by recycling of aluminum cans throughout our community and the annual pancake breakfast held in January. The Loan Room provides rollaways beds, cots for children, tables and chairs, car seats and some children’s toys. We also loan medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats, etc. We are open 8-9 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. Reservations can be made at the Loan Room, November-April, or by telephone on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8-9 AM only. Note: You must be able to transport your borrowed items from the Loan Room to your vehicle. If you need additional help, you should make arrangements for that help. The Loan Room personnel/volunteers cannot assist you. You are responsible for transporting the borrowed items. Aluminum can donations: deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees. We delivered 600 pounds of aluminum cans to the scrap yard on January 15. We received $354. Year to date the CAC has received $1,416 from this program.. Long Range Planning Committee/Ad Hoc LRPC Task Team

Chair Leslie Platt 818-1963 Vice Chair Debra Arrett 825-5703 Second and Fourth Monday, 2 PM, WC3

The LRPC has completed its Pro Shop proposal which the Board of Directors has given to a task force for implementation. In January, we began working on a proposal for the Café and Lounge. Our goal is to refresh the Café and

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, February 2015

establish a lounge in the area the existing Pro Shop will vacate. This is intended as an amenity for all residents. It will be a place where we can gather to socialize and hold special events, as well as increasing our catering opportunities. We are very interested in your thoughtful comments and suggestions. Please email Leslie Platt at bplatt38@comcast.net or Debra Arrett at debra@myfastmail.com. We also invite you to attend our meetings. Marketing and Publicity

Chair Jim Mitchell jtmitch45@gmail.com Fourth Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

The committee has decided to postpone the Home Remodeling Forum scheduled for February 28. A focus group of residents was conducted in late January to give feedback on the design of the new SCOV website. Work continues on functionality of the site. The golf sub-committee is working on initiatives the Board assigned Marketing to increase golf revenues. We also completed an analysis of Golf Now rates and are working on guidelines for setting daily Golf Now greens fees. The Café sub-committee is assisting Vince Hotz in promoting the Café at the Club Fair on February 6. Neighborhood Pride

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 Have a Look-See

A raised or uneven sidewalk is a hazard. If the cement is uneven, possibly causing a walker to trip and fall, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to have it repaired. Take a walk on your sidewalk, and take a look. Is yours OK? Next time you are out at your mailbox, take a look. Could it use a fresh coat of paint? Perhaps it’s time to paint the pole, box and flag. If you don’t wish to do the actual painting yourself, check with Consumer Referral for names of people who will do it for you at a nominal cost. All wrought iron perimeter fences in the community need to be painted the Weathered Brown color by next January 1, 2016, so think ahead and plan. Board Candidates Answer Questions 1. Why do you want to serve as a Board member and what do you feel you will contribute to the Board if elected?

1. Why do you want to serve as a Board member and what do you feel you will contribute to the Board if elected?

I wish to serve on the SCOV Board of Directors because of my experience as a member and chair person on the Architectural Review Committee. I relearned the importance of volunteers who are helping other residents with all types of problems. Ric Raynor I worked for 28 years in the field of conflict resolution, listening to people with many opposing views. I learned methods to find an acceptable middle ground that was usually agreeable to all points of view.

We have lived in SCOV for thirteen years and I have attended a majority of the Board meetings. It is now time to sit on the other side of the table. I will be able to contribute the knowledge I have gained that comes from exposure to the nuances of our community.

Posed by the Election Committee 1. Why do you want to serve as a Board member and what do you feel you will contribute to the Board if elected?

As many of you know I have served on the Board of Directors previously from 2007 to 2010. I did so as I wanted to better the community and improve communications with the residents in a fair, unbiased manner. It is for these reasons I decided Steve Taillie to run again for a second term. All my life I have chosen to be active in volunteer organizations in my community, from being president of a 72-unit condo board to being a Scoutmaster in BSA. 2. What goals would you like to help the Board achieve during your term? The most major goal I hope to achieve in the next three years would be to continue moderation and upkeep of SCOV. This is extremely important as it affects our home values for potential resale and keeps SCOV competitive with other communities in southern Arizona. My second goal would be to improve communication between the town of Oro Valley, the SCOV Board of Directors and SCOV residents.

1. Why do you want to serve as a Board member and what do you feel you will contribute to the Board if elected?

A few years ago I repeatedly attempted to influence the Board to reduce dues increases that were rising at almost 15% per year for five consecutive years. My voice from the audience and letters to the Board had no discernible effect. I’ve learned George Williams that the financial decisions for our community are made by the Board. I want a vote – one of the seven that decides how our money is spent. My priority is to spend our funds to keep SCOV well maintained but without adding expensive new features or enhancements. My goal is financial restraint. 2. What goals would you like to help the Board achieve during your term? My primary purpose in running for election to the Board is to avoid major expenditures like the proposed new Pro Shop and the Lounge taking its place in the vacated space. There is also a major revision being considered for the Auditorium that I feel is not needed, at least not in the scope envisioned now. My goal is fiscal responsibility.

3. What do you perceive as a hot button issue and what is your opinion on that matter?

3. What do you perceive as a hot button issue and what is your opinion on that matter?

I feel the major hot button facing SCOV is the sale of Hilton’s El Conquistador golf courses to the Town of Oro Valley. We currently support our golf course and now we will have to support a second 45-hole golf course and face increased sales tax on any purchases we make in OV. We must find ways to keep The Views competitive and avoid further erosion in its profitability. With 2,488 voting homes and some 4,000 residents SCOV needs to have a greater say in what OV does in the future. We must work on a better dialog with OV.

It seems to me that building a new Pro Shop and then building a bar in the former space is a single project. Why build a whole new building when the present Pro Shop is adequate? The only conceivable reason is to have space available for a lounge. The Hilton Hotel had a restaurant and lounge at the El Conquistador Country Club and lost money on that food and beverage operation for years. If Hilton can’t break even on their golf course Lounge what makes us think that Sun City can do better?

Let There Be Light

One of the remaining 2009 Initiatives was to update the exterior lighting. Last March a small task force of staff and a resident with commercial design background began the process of finding an exterior light fixture for our buildings. A resident took on the task taking an inventory of all the fixtures on our building. The 30 year old fixtures had become oxidized, mismatched and tired looking. Bids were sought from several lighting companies, Internet research was conducted and a fixture was selected from a Tucson based company called Illuminations. The fixture is a Kichler light and the model is Atwood. This model was selected based on the new look of our signage with the brown metals and rich desert hues. Additionally, the bulbs are LED which will consumes less energy. At the time this article was written installation has just begun around the AFC pool. We believe this change will update the exterior of our buildings and satisfy the ongoing charge to enhance and maintain our buildings in SCOV. If you are interested in similar lighting from Illuminations, they are offering the following, “With gratitude, Illuminations lighting showroom is extending contractor and designer discounts to all SCOV residents through December 2015. This is our way of saying thank-you for your support. These discounts amount to 10% -15% off all non-sale lighting products and accessories but do not apply to fans due to the pricing criteria required by the manufacturers. We look forward to serving our friends at Sun City. Best Regards, Dennis Hoth, Store Manager, 325-3031.” Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius

February is a busy time in Tucson

Not only are there things planned in the community, but two events are very popular in Tucson. First is the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. People from around the globe come to buy and sell their items. Some areas you must have a buyer’s pass that involves having a tax ID number, but some areas anyone can go to and buy items at great prices. If you have never gone it is an experience you won’t forget. Check the local newspapers for details. Second is the La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros –The Tucson Rodeo is one of the country’s oldest rodeos. It’s a nice time to take in the fun of the old west. You have to go just once to say you have been to the rodeo and don’t forget to dress western all that week here in SCOV. Check local newspapers for more information and details. It’s great to live in an area that brings winter fun for all of us. We are pleased to announce the Golf Cart Parade winners First Prize - Don Hess Second Prize - Jerry and Judy Hale First Prize Winner Third Prize - Aneita Babicz

Did you know that we take donations of children’s books? They are delivered to local area food banks and placed in the hands of children who accompany parents/caregivers. The joy on their faces, and the wonder with which they ask, “Can I keep it?” would warm your heart. Please consider donating your gently used children’s books to the Library. Over thirty recent release videos have been added in the last couple of months. Among the latest are Gone Girl, Fury, The Judge, and Downton Abbey Season 5. It’s slim pickings for new release books this time of year, but we have exciting new purchases in large print. We are introducing a new author to our large print collection with both Shots Fired, and Stone Cold, by C.J. Box. On the lighter side, we have Sunshine on Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith, and Let Sleeping Dogs Lie by Rita Mae Brown. Friends of the Library A big thank you to those who joined the Friends of the Library during our membership drive and to those who supported our Home Tour by purchasing a ticket for the Saturday, February 21, event. Please check the posters at the library or the Activity Center for the sale dates for our annual Books and Authors’ Luncheon. We are delighted to announce that J A Jance will be returning as one of our authors for the luncheon. Also presenting will be photographer and writer, Suzanne Clemenz. Suzanne’s book is titled Discover the Wonders of Sedona. It is these fundraising events that provide the books, videos, audio books, The Wall Street Journal and the materials needed to keep our outstanding library running effectively.

What to Look for in a Fitness App

Search for a fitness or weight-loss app in your phone’s app store, and you’re bombarded with thousands upon thousands of programs promising to help you get in shape. But how do you know which one is right for you without trying them all? Health experts knowledgeable about the fitness app market suggest a few questions you can ask to figure out if the app you’re thinking about downloading is worth your time. Does it fit your skill level? Is it personal? Does it use all your phone’s features? Is it connected? Does it have good reviews? Is it social? Does it keep you interested? LFCONNECT is a good app and is featured on our gym equipment. Downloading the best app in the world won’t make a difference if you never actually use it. That’s why the right app for you is the one that keeps you interested and keeps you coming back.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf February is in the middle of the busiest part of the golfing season. The golf course is in great condition with the fairways dark green and the non-overseeded roughs completely dormant offering a great contrast in colors. The greens are rolling smooth and holding shots nicely. The increased amount of golfers playing the golf course has a negative impact on these great conditions, but, following normal etiquette, some of this impact can be alleviated. One of the biggest problems is the increased amount of ball marks on the greens. We have volunteers that “adopta-hole” who fix ball marks during the week. Also, two staff members work on ball marks periodically to try and keep up. Despite all this work the greens still have many breaks that are not repaired. If every golfer fixed a couple on each green, the greens would be significantly better. This would also alleviate some of the work required on the greens. Another problem is golfers repairing divots in the nonoverseed areas with divot mix. The divot mix contains seed, sand and mulch. The seed germinates and grows in patches in the brown roughs which looks like blemishes all over the golf course. This requires extra time and chemicals to clean up these blemishes. Golf Advisory

February is such a marvelous month to be in Tucson playing golf in the warm sunshine. On Sunday, February 8, 1 PM bring your sweetie for the next great adventure in the Hit & Giggles event. Kim Griggs and Preston Sheriff are always dreaming up new ideas to make our golf course even more exciting. Mike Kropf has been training his new maintenance crew on proper pin placement on the greens and how to work the sand traps the correct way. If you make a divot in the brown grass, do not use seed-mix. The seed-mix is only for the fairway divots. If your ball lands in a sand trap, enter and exit the sand trap on the lowest side and remember to rake the trap while exiting. The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club Pres. 2014 Rider Of The Year - 2014 Reprinted by permission from AZCyclist.com Franz Hammer, SCOV resident wins Arizona Cyclist award. In his own words: “Growing up in Switzerland, I followed my passion and had a successful career in downhill ski racing and subsequently as a coach/instructor in New Zealand and since 1963 in the US. At age 35, finally I had the opportunity to pursue my other passion, bike racing. Since 1977 I was fortunate to win 32 National Masters Championships in Road Racing, Time trials, Crits and Track pursuit. Winning all Road events at the Nike Masters World Games in ’97, was a special thrill also. Into my early 60s I continued to race as a Cat 1 in the Seattle/NW/Vancouver, B.C. area, but eventually one pays tribute to getting older! Living in beautiful Oro Valley for the past 10 years renewed my motivation to train and race – it is also a privilege to be part of a great racing community in AZ. I hope to be able to continue on this path for many more years. Diagnosed with prostate cancer 12 years ago was a big wake-up call. I had major surgery in ’02, getting back on the bike was a top priority. A lesson I learned riding/racing a bike in all these years: never give up!”

Tuesday morning our WOW (Women on Wheels) group takes somewhat shorter rides closer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season. Call Tom or Bonnie Bethea for more information. Vistoso Cyclists partner Wheels for Kids: donate your seldom-used, tax-deductible bike to Wheels for Kids. At our February meeting we will discuss Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to aging out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her house is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvenile court and worse. As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance. At our March meeting we will discuss Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan, New York Times bestselling author of Loving Frank. This book tells the improbable love story of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his tempestuous American wife, Fanny. At the age of 35, Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne left her philandering husband in San Francisco to set sail for Belgium with her three children and nanny in tow to study art. It is a chance for this adventurous woman to start over, to make a better life for all of them and to pursue her own desires. Visitors and guests are always welcome. Bowling League - Pathfinders

Those Darn Roots…

Over the past few months several walkers have fallen on uneven sidewalks in our community. No serious injuries have put our people in the hospital but it is just a matter of time if we are not more diligent about the condition of our pedestrian walkways. In most cases the roots of our maturing trees are causing the cement to raise or fall creating a potential tripping hazard. We each own the sidewalk adjacent to our home, so it is the responsibility of the homeowner to have it repaired.

David Fraser 825-4344 www.scovaz.com/clubs/hiking

Hiking early in December to Hidden Falls in Catalina Park were five club members: Jeanne Holak, Donna Voth, Orie Voth, Marge Flory, hike guide, and Joe Thiele. The hope was to see water tumbling down the mountainside due to recent rains, but disappointed prevailed. A worthy activity is participating in a Wash Clean-Up. Our third clean-up for the season is the Big Wash scheduled for February 19, 9 AM. There will be bonus miles offered as well as an opportunity to win a $25 gift card for the Café. This is a project the club volunteers to help keep our community clean and beautiful. This activity is to our benefit since we often utilize the washes for hiking activities. Another important date to enter on your calendar is February 18, the Annual Spring Picnic. As well as enjoying good food, mileage awards will be presented, and several brief matters of club business will be conducted. Watch your email for details and sign-up forms. Horseshoes

Our annual meeting/pizza party was held January 16. We elected four new board members and would like to thank retiring board members Jan Pelzer, Dee Erlandson and especially Judy Cornelius. Judy has devoted many years to the development of the club, as well as our new courts. Thank you for your service. After a very successful clinic with Prem Carnot, the Pickleball Guru, in January, it is hoped that we can offer more clinics and lessons in the future. We also are teaming up with the Women’s Tennis club to support Rally for the Cure on Wednesday, February 11. Check the bulletin board for more information on that, as well as the schedule with current times for usage of the courts by our various levels of play. Pilates

Vistoso Photo Club Christmas Party, Dec. 10, 2014 Winners at the December Street Shots Competition were Steve Alverdes, Ken Ayers, Brenda Ericsson, Harvey Gardner, Laura Hackenbrock, Diane Haegele, Dave Henderson, Rose Julian, Pat Mulligan and Evelyn Richards. The February 25 meeting is an assigned competition A Different Angle of View with judge Hal Tretbar, an advanced photographer, who gives workshops for Arizona Highways Magazine. We are a social club hosting guest speakers, holding friendly photo competitions monthly for all skill levels and offering educational courses. This month’s meetings will be restricted to those enrolled in our facilitated workshop which runs through March 2. All SCOV poets will be welcome to participate when open meetings resume Monday, March 9. Meanwhile, here’s a poem from Billy Collins about the winters we came here to escape: “A little heat in the iron radiator, the dog breathing at the foot of the bed, and the windows shut tight, encrusted with hexagons of frost. I can barely hear the geese complaining in the vast sky, flying over the living and the dead, schools and prisons, and the whitened fields.” Many of us aspire to achieve the effective simplicity of this former national poet laureate.

The SCOV Club Fair this year is Friday, February 6, 1-3 PM. Stop by the Pilates Club booth to see why, forty years after his death, the Joseph Pilates system of exercises has never been in such high demand. Fortunately, SCOV offers the Joseph Pilates classes here twice per week. People ask “can the benefits of this Pilates method, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is “yes”. Additional benefits you’ll see from taking our group mat classes will also include better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. Not only do we have experienced instructors, the cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch one of our classes. Call Mary 638-7916. Pinochle

Elizabeth Houle-Nelson and Dennis Nelson 520-400-3065 deneliz64@gmail.com Monthly dinners in members homes at various times.

The theme for February’s meal will be menu choices from a specific geographical location. Ethnic choices, in December, for one included a Scandinavian dinner from herring, fruit soup and lefse to a lamb entree with fruit torte for dessert. One group chose to individually prepare an ethnic choice. Another group had an Asian-themed dinner which included spring rolls with peanut sauce, Asian halibut and rice, snap peas and cucumber salad. This club eats well and enjoys trying new recipes. The Prepare and Share Club will have a table at the Club Fair Friday, February 6. Stop by and receive information about future events. Our Spring Luncheon will be held at the Gallery at Dove Mountain Tuesday, February 17, 11:30 AM. The price is $22 pp which includes the entree (choice of three) with sides, beverage, dessert, tax and tip. In this lovely setting, enjoy a delicious lunch with no preparation. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life. For more information, contact one of our club co-chairs listed above.
