Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Why You Should Vote For the Fitness Center Project by Robert Hefner There have been many reasons given as to why residents should vote for the renovation and expansion of the fitness center. Many of those reasons have been related to future residents of Sun City Oro Valley. While those are valid reasons, I want to focus on why I believe it is in the best interest of our current residents to support this project. Those of you who currently use the facility know it is so overcrowded with equipment that even the reception area of the building is completely filled with exercise bikes and strength equipment. Those of you who are in exercise groups know how difficult it is to schedule adequate rooms for your group. You are already solidly behind the project. It is the ones who are asking “What’s in it for me?” that I am trying to reach. One of the main reasons this is a good idea is that it has been shown in other active adult communities that have improved their fitness facilities, resident participation has increased. Is it not worth the relatively small amount this project will cost you as a homeowner if it improves the health or extends the life of you or some of your neighbors? But maybe the best reason is to consider what a bargain this is. When was the last time you had a chance to be part of a $2,000,000 improvement project, dedicated to the health of all of our residents, for only $385?

2012 A Year of Ebbs and Tides The Community faced a wide range of issues during the past calendar year. Most notable of these issues was the AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center) proposal. A major upside of the proposal is that it raised the interest and participation of our membership. The major downside is that it resulted in considerable dissension among the residents. Although the AFC project unintentionally resulted in ill feelings and division between many of our wonderful residents, which this Community does not desire, it also gave us an opportunity to learn from mistakes or actions that were perceived to be mistakes. It’s probably true that the Community is not completely healed; however, lessons have been learned and actions taken to create a more cohesive community. For example, shortly after the AFC project was not accepted, another committee, the FCC, was established by the Board to develop a new plan that would be supported by most of the residents. This new plan development has been very important. However, of possibly greater importance is the manner in which the plan has been developed with great emphasis placed on membership dialogue plus the goal of serving as a healing example for the Community by purposely having people with very diverse points of view work toward consensus. In addition to what the FCC accomplished in building consensus, a communication gap was filled by distributing information on a regular and timely basis through my This Week in SCOV Listserv report on In the Know. Not everyone receives this report and not everyone may appreciate it; however, the feedback received to date has been very positive. The couple of strides noted above, developed from lessons learned, will not cure all ills. Certainly there are other measures that are needed on an ongoing basis to improve communications to and from the membership and steps that are required to create and maintain a fun and friendly Community. We’re not where we want to be and may never reach that ultimate place, but efforts have and will continue to be made to create the best environment possible in SCOV.

The HOT Spot is for the purpose of listing help-wanted ads for various Association and Association Committee tasks. WANTED: The Posse is looking for a resident to join the Posse Board. This member will be responsible for recruiting new members. The successful applicant must be a skilled public speaker and able to develop and execute an effective recruiting strategy. increasing number of residents with home projects. We are proud that home owners are making large improvements to homes, yards, walls/fences, and vegetation. Now that trees are not required in front yards we are assisting owners in choosing smaller cactus and water-conserving plants as replacements. Contact the ARC to assist in all exterior home improvements so they can be completed quickly and within the Development Standards. Please check your house number lights to be sure they are all working and look to see that your numbers are clearly visible from the street in front of your home. The ARC is a committee to assist residents and the Association. Tucson Electric is in the process of updating home meter heads to a digital format for ease of reading and for future remote reading. These meters will only transmit usage amounts and have no other function. We have been assured the new meters will not affect any other transmissions to or from a residence. Full communication about the possibility of a new fitness center is critical. As most everyone in SCOV knows, the FCC (Fitness Center Committee) has worked hard over the last several months to develop a plan for a new fitness center. They have done a terrific job of communicating with the community about their work. They have made a recommendation to the Board and will hold three informational meetings in January to present it. The meetings are scheduled for Friday, January 4, 9 AM, Monday, January 7, 3 PM and Thursday, January 10, 6:30 PM. The purpose of these meetings is to explain everything about their recommendation and to answer all questions. The Communications Committee commends the FCC for the work they have done and for their commitment to transparency and open communication. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Recently personal trash has been found in the aluminum recycling containers. Our volunteers must then sort this out and place it in trash receptacles. Please help us by recycling your aluminum cans but placing your trash in your trash containers. CAC volunteers delivered their fourth can load this year; it was 520 pounds which netted us $317.20 bringing the year-to-date total to $1,132.80. The CAC is responsible for the Loan Room which is located at the end of the Cart Barn. The Loan Room provides medical equipment, tables and chairs, rollaway beds and some children’s equipment for loan to residents. The Loan Room is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-9 AM. The Board of Directors approved the Fitness Center Plan 3a for a vote of the membership as presented by the FCC and the architectural firm STG Design at their regular meeting of December 13. The FCC and STG Design have committed to hold three meetings in January with residents of SCOV, to review the architectural renderings and the presentation of rationales for the design. Those meetings will be held on various dates and at various times to allow all residents the opportunity for questions and answers. Residents will be asked to limit their questions/comments to two minutes. Additionally, the FCC and architects will respond to written questions. Is It Too Late? A question we’ve all been asked at one time or another in our lives is, “Did you make one?” That question refers to New Year’s resolutions, and if you haven’t made one, it’s not too late to do so. How about making a resolution to take pride and care of ourselves, our homes, and our property where we live. Most of us already do that, but just think how great our community would look if we all did. Our committee members have certainly enjoyed seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the community over the past few weeks. As a friendly reminder though, seasonal decorations should be removed by January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property, and we are most pleased with how beautiful our community is looking to usher in the New Year. We wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013.

Last month we reported an analysis being run on a cogeneration proposal that might improve energy efficiency. The result showed that the payback was inadequate, so the project was terminated. The project to upgrade audio/visual equipment in the Social Hall and Catalina Vista facilities has solicited input from users and monitors. We are now working with vendors to prepare a bid specification and expect to make a recommendation to the Board in March. The solar water heater at the Desert Oasis is fully functional using a newly installed computerized controller. An inquiry has been made regarding potentially hazardous dust that emits from gourding (the artistic shaping of gourds). SCOV Committees At Work This past month residents of SCOV participated in over 30 committee meetings, two subcommittee meetings and two meetings of the Board of Directors. You currently have 23 committees ranging from studying what equipment is needed in the fitness center (Fitness Center Equipment) to patrolling our community (Posse), studying how to agree agreeably (Strategic Projects) to sponsoring educational events on how to sleep better (Active Health). You make sure we dot our “i’s” and cross our “t’s” (Tipster Editorial) and introduce potential residents to SCOV (Ambassadors). There are lovely artisan items for all to enjoy and purchase (Gift Shop) and you make sure we are talking and listening to each other (Communications). You are bringing forward an initiative for Association members to vote on (Fitness Center) and making sure you look good (Neighborhood Pride). There were rollaway beds available for holiday visitors (Community Assistance) and vendors available for plumbing emergencies (Consumer Referral). You are able to call each other (Community Directory) and ask your friends and neighbors to represent you as leaders of SCOV (Nominating). You toured the buildings for inspection (Properties) and told others about this community (Marketing). Town officials have given reports (Government Affairs) and you’ve enjoyed delicious meals at The Café (Food & Beverage). Your golfers are enjoying the beautiful course (Golf Advisory) and you are preparing to tally results from two votes (Elections). You are planning to help us deal with crisis situations (Emergency Preparedness), helping your friends and neighbors upgrade your homes (Architectural Review) and keeping SCOV in a strong financial position (Finance-Budget). Do you know all the things the Friends of the Library does? Contrary to popular belief no money from Sun City’s annual dues goes to the Library on a regular basis to cover its operational costs. The Friends of the Library pays for: ▪ Book, DVD and audio-book purchases, subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal and other publications. ▪ Computer equipment, computer programs and upgrades. ▪ Supplies, replacements, furnishings and the Librarian’s car mileage costs. ▪ Community events such as concerts, Books and Authors’ Luncheon and the Home Tour. The Library/FOL brings in revenue from book sales, DVD fees, ticket sales to fund raising events and individual donations. Costs for materials are kept down in part by buying used books and/or trading at Bookmans. Unfortunately, in recent years this savings has been significantly reduced because the library is getting fewer of the highly tradable new hardbacks as donations and because Bookmans is accepting fewer books in trade overall. Some of that reduced purchasing power has been offset by buying through Amazon, but the cost of maintaining the library’s collection has increased and will probably continue to increase in the next few years. This year the Friends had to increase its annual advance to the Library substantially. To keep this valuable and much used resource in fine shape it is really important to join and maintain your membership in the Friends of the Library or to donate money if you so wish. I hope everyone had a great holiday and enjoyed time with their family and friends. For those of you who havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stopped by the Pro Shop, please do so. We have a wide variety of merchandise and if we do not have your size or color, we will be more than happy to special order for you. We have a variety of items (towels, hats and other merchandise) that have The Views Golf Club logo on them. Time Change: On Wednesdays the morning shotguns will start at 8:30 AM (unless there is a frost delay). The afternoon shotguns are now scheduled to go out at 1 PM, not 1:30 PM as in previous years. This is being done so that we can possibly get the afternoon shotgun in before dark. Reminder: the frost delay hot line is 825-0322. Walkers and riders, please remember to remain on the paths at all times. Should frost be present, you may damage or kill the underlying grass if you walk on it. Thank you. As everyone knows, we are now open to the public which makes us a semi-private golf course. Please be aware that as new people play our course, they may be a little slow as it may be their first time here. Our rangers are aware of this and will help move them along. We advise everyone of our rules, and hand out playing tips to them in the Pro Shop. So, please be patient and courteous to these guests. January is the time of year when the normal activities in the golf course maintenance department really slow down. The cooler temperatures decrease the growth rate of the grass so the amount Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, January 2013

of mowing required is greatly reduced. Less fertilizer and water are required for maintaining good turf health. This allows our department to catch up on other areas of the golf course, such as drainage projects, desert broom removal, tree trimming and landscaping. Some of the projects that are going to be addressed will be thinning the desert around the driving range floor so the Pro Shop can recover lost range balls and repair of erosion areas around tee complexes and cart paths with river rock. During heavy rainfall, tees like #1 red tee, #3 golf tee, and #7 tees wash dirt onto the tee top requiring lots of time and effort to repair. The river rock will prevent this damaging erosion. More drainage projects will be completed this year to improve playing conditions. Tee #14 has several areas that have drainage issues. The wet conditions start at the puddle on the cart path in front of the red tee and go all the way to the cart path where carts exit the fairway. The scope of this project is so large it will be divided into several smaller projects that will be completed over the span of a couple years. It was reported that both the rounds played and revenues are ahead of last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s numbers. The sale of 18 hole, 9-hole and non-resident passes are very close to or over the budgeted numbers. For the occasional golfer, you want to check out the Wildcat Pass in the pro shop. The holder will receive a 15% discount off the rack rate green fee; it does not include the cart rental. The derby held November 28 was a success. Twelve two-person teams played and it was a fun event won by Mike and Ruth Bonfiglio. It was agreed that more of these events be scheduled in the future. Mike Kropf said the temperatures have been over 80 degrees. With cooler weather he will be able to reduce the amount of water used. The course will firm up and dry out soon.

Feature Sun City Oro Valley pioneer, E. Keith Staley, turns 100 January 13. To put that date into perspective, Arizona had just become a state in 1912. During 1913 Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated as president and a year later the country was in World War I. Born in Trinidad, CO, Staley’s family relocated to Clayton, NM, the first town on the Santa Fe Trail. He graduated in engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1935 and his life with rocks began. A chance meeting while hitchhiking brought him to Arizona. He struck up a conversation with another fellow on the road who ironically, had also graduated from the Colorado School of Mines. Everyone was looking for work at the time and this fellow reported that the Morenci Arizona Copper Mine was opening. Staley hitched to Arizona and signed on at Morenci. Soon the country was in World War II. Staley was stationed in Alaska with the Corps of Engineers and later commanded a division in Burma, India, a big change for someone who had been trained for Arctic survival. After the war, Staley returned to Arizona and spent his entire career in the copper industry, jumping from Arizona to Nevada, to California to Colorado. He ended up being general manager of the Magma mine in San Manuel, the largest underground copper mine in the world. After retirement, Staley began his second career with stone. While still living in San Manuel, he drove to Tucson to teach lapidary and silversmithing at the Tucson Old Pueblo Lapidary Club. Once settled in Sun City, he began teaching at the brand new silver and lapidary club. Lapidary student Sherri Zei says, “Keith is a legend in the lapidary silversmithing area. He is an incredibly skilled teacher and eagerly shares his knowledge about stones, mining and craftsmanship”. Staley has taught well over 100 residents of Sun City the art of cutting stones and creating jewelry. Even today, he can be seen at the shop working on stones and jewelry. We are honored this year to have two distinguished writers as our speakers: Pulitzer Prize winner Philip Caputo and Sharon Rezac Andersen, both of whom give us views into worlds largely unfamiliar to us. Mr. Caputo, whose work includes both fiction and non-fiction, will present his novel, Crossers, the compelling story of an act of generosity which sets off a flood of events which serve as a reminder that we can’t escape our history. Ms. Andersen, will present her non-fiction work: The Burden of Knowing: A journey of friendship and the power of truth in Nicaragua. On a study tour in 1983 she and a friend put themselves in harm’s way to learn the surprising truth about the Sandinistas and came away with a belief that we need to be cautious of the media’s infotainment tendencies.

The media crews that covered the December 19 delivery were surprised that, considering the state of the economy, the SCOV Sock Drive was able to increase the donation by such a large margin. Last year, the Vistoso Cyclists and Seniors for Kids delivered 115 refurbished and 22 new bikes to 14 various children’s services organizations all at no charge. This was made possible because of generous contributions from Sun City Oro Valley residents and the Vistoso Cyclists. For the 30th Annual El Tour de Tucson, the Vistoso Cyclists were represented by 19 riders. For the 111 mile race we had 11 entries and three guests, two from Minnesota and one from Chicago. The 60 mile race had two riders and in the 42 mile race, had Joe Quinn and his two sons. Joe, 87, completed his 18th tour, more than anyone in the club. He began riding in 1993 and missed only one tour when he broke his hip. We also had two Ride Marshalls, Fred Finney and Jim Elkin. Nine of the riders received the gold ranking signifying an outstanding time for their age bracket. The club cheered all of the riders as they passed by Sun City Vistoso. Congratulations to our enthusiastic bunch of El Tour riders and helpers. Scheduled rides begin this month at 9:30 AM at the Mountain View Plaza. New riders are always welcome. Tuesday, November 13, was our only tournament for that month. With all four tables being used, 16 men did their best, but, in the end first place was shared by Ray Hicks and Harvey Prendeville. Second place was taken by Terry Henrichs and third place went to Glen Schnell. Just prior to the tournament start, we had a club meeting, as a good portion of the very active members were present. The issue concerning the start time for all the upcoming 2013 tournaments was discussed and decided. The time of 1-4 PM was accepted by the majority of people present. Concerned with the lingering effects on the Jews of the Holocaust, Grossman questioned how such horrors are allowed to happen. His explanation involves what he calls the language of the masses, “a language intended to liberate the individual from responsibility for his actions, to temporarily sever his private, individual judgment from his sound logic and natural sense of justice.” He remains concerned that today’s mass media employs a similar language with comparable results but posits that “literature can repeatedly redeem for us the tragedy of the one from the statistics of the millions.”

In a poem called Winter Love Linda Gregg begins by wanting “to decorate this silence” and ends with “I waited too long to drink my tea. It was not hot. It was only warm.” Reading the poem, one wonders why her house seems silent or perhaps she means empty with the absence of another person. Her tea could be a metaphor for love or whatever she failed to take a chance on when it was “hot”. The poem is not long and the language is simple but full of possibilities with regard to meaning. Working with words is what poets do and we hope to improve our construction skills with a facilitated workshop beginning Monday, January 14 and concluding Monday, February 18. This workshop is open only to those who have pre-registered. Once it’s concluded, all resident poets will be welcome to participate in our weekly meetings.
