From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors tkelleyscov@gmail.com Our SCOV Golf Amenity by Tim Kelley “Amenity: 1) Something that helps to provide … enjoyment; 3) b (2): A feature conducive to such attractiveness and value” –Merriam-Webster The amenities of SCOV are numerous and provide enjoyment. They contribute to the attractiveness and value of our community and homes. The Board members are charged with maintaining and, when necessary, adding and updating our amenities as changing interests of our residents dictate. These changes are essential to maintain SCOV as a leader among active adult communities. The largest amenity geographically and in the generation of revenue is The Views Golf Club. The Board has devoted considerable attention to the planning and operation of the golf course. The Marketing, Golf Advisory, Golf Rate, Finance and Budget, and most recently, the Green Reconstruction Committees contribute greatly. The SCOV staff contributions, including marketing, Pro Shop, golf maintenance and others, are important cogs in the wheels that keep our golf course among the best in the Tucson valley. I cannot say enough about how important Mike Kropf and his crew are to our success. On Tuesday, January 9, 2 PM, Auditorium, there will be a “Report to the Community” tol tell you about the state of the golf industry, the initiatives we have taken over the last few years and the results of those initiatives. We will tell you about what steps are planned going forward and answer your questions. I urge you to attend.

Coffee and Conversation with the General Manager and a Board Member

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Change in Our Community It is interesting to live in a community that accommodates residents representing many different generations. Our work experiences may come from as many as three or four decades. We think differently about many issues, and all this difference is what makes our community great. For some in the community, change is an easy thing, but for many, change takes some getting used to. I look at all the wonderful amenities in SCOV and realize that many of the current amenities are different than they were when the community was first developed. I had some guests visit the community, and they were shocked to hear the community is just over 30 years old. Because of the changes that keep the community looking so good, they thought it was much newer. At this time of year, as we look to the future, we contemplate what the new year will have in store. We realize that we have many new residents who bring new ideas. The community will not look the same in another 30 years, and I expect people living here then will comment about how young the community looks to them. Committees are looking at some of those changes now with the greens renovation and the Activity Center renovation. I look forward to being a part of the community as we see it grow with positive changes that will meet the demands of future generations.

Holiday Hours Monday, January 1 New Year's Day AFC open 8 AM-5 PM All other facilities closed. Monday, January 15 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Welcome Center and Library closed.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 10% Rental Limit Update All the applications received for SCOV Rental Lots have been approved. There are 249 spaces available and, of those 249, 197 were approved. The remaining few were determined to be delegated homes. Delegated homes are those where an owner delegates their rights and allows someone, who is not paying rent, such as a parent or child, to live in the home. These delegated homes are not counted against the 249 rental lots. There was no need to invoke the grandfathering provision which guaranteed that those who were renting their lot when the initiative passed in March 2017 would have one of the 249 spaces; there were fewer than 249 applications submitted. In short, everyone who submitted an application was approved; there are 50+ spaces remaining. Those approved for the available 249 rental spaces have been provided notice. There are still some remaining matters to address, and staff will be working through those remaining issues and fine tuning the application process. Thank you for your feedback and patience through this process. It has been an excellent working experience for me to listen to your concerns and have the support of our Board to allow us to work through these matters. In the end, a smooth process will be developed that will preserve and maintain SCOV to the standards you desire and expect.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Wishing all of you the best of health and happiness in 2018. New shows and new ideas are coming to you this year. The new TAD management “Eagles” tribute show on January 12 sold out so quickly that we decided to change the seating format for the February 3 “Abba” show to theater-style seating. With this format, you can still bring your own drinks, but no snacks. We want all our residents to be able to see a show. Other communites who use TAD Management shows have had to go to theater-style seating. Remember, my office door is always open for suggestions and new ideas. Once again, Happy New Year.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 It’s a New Year As we greet the new year it is time to take account of home exterior projects we have in mind and perhaps those which were completed during 2017. Most homeowners had their projects approved by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) or Community Services Coordinator (CSC), but there are always a few that have slipped through the cracks. For one reason or another there have been times when some have failed to go through the submittal process, either because they didn’t know it was required, or because they didn’t feel it was necessary. Regardless of the reasons, our governing documents (to which we all agreed when signing at escrow) clearly define what exterior projects need the approval of the ARC in advance of work. The newest version of the Development Standards (October 24, 2017) outlines the procedure and what is expected

when making changes to the outside of your home. Feel free to download these from our SCOV website, or pick up a copy in our Welcome Center. If you have remembered after the fact that you installed a new roof, etc. without prior approval, it is important to update your resident file by going through the process. Your resident file will be up-to-date when it is time to sell your home, and you will avoid the hassle of trying to bring your property into compliance at that time. The CSC is available for submittals 9-11 AM each weekday in the Welcome Center.

Our fall author series lineup from September through December was terrific. Attendance averaged over 110 per event. Check the Coming Events section for upcoming authors. Thanks to Friends of the Library (FOL) fundraising, these events continue to be free. Last year, the FOL contributed over $17,500 to the library for the purchase of books, audiobooks, videos, supplies like book jackets, audiobook cases, tape, the software contract, Wall Street Journal subscription, furniture, technology and more. This year, membership in the FOL will bring benefits beyond the intrinsic. Early access to Home Tour tickets and a free membership appreciation event are two of the most anticipated benefits. A large number of movies have been added over the past month, including Dunkirk (Fionn Whitehead), and Victoria & Abdul (Judi Dench). I am introducing books by well-rated mystery/thriller authors new to our shelves, including: Riley Sager, Mindy Mejia, Gin Phillips, Sherry Thomas and Rachel Caine. Let me know what you think.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Create a Plan Before you start your exercise program, answer three questions. First, when will you exercise? Identify three days and times that are convenient for you and stick with those days so you are working out at the same time each week. Second, what type of exercise will you do? The best type of exercise is one you enjoy. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing; pick an exercise that works for you. Choose from activities such as walking, cycling, running, swimming, weightlifting, skating, dancing, golf, handball, tennis and basketball. Third, how much time will you spend exercising? Start with as little as 10 minutes per session and slowly build up to at least 30 minutes per workout. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, January 9, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, January 10, the Desert Oasis Pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Association Committees Help Needed This Help Needed section seeks volunteer help for various Association Committees. You must be an owner/resident to serve. The SCOV Active Health Committee (AHC) is actively looking for residents interested in joining our committee. The only requirement is the desire for you and your friends to stay physically and mentally active. If interested, contact Janyce Lundstedt, Chair of AHC 503-475-0520 or Janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com. Active Health Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com Nov.-Apr, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health On Monday, January 22, 1 PM, Auditorium, the Active Health Committee is hosting "Valley Fever" presented by Dr. John Galgiani, M.D., director of the University of Arizona Valley Fever Center of Excellence which he helped found in 1996. The Center’s work encompasses public awareness, clinical guidelines, training and research into rapid detection methods as well as development of a vaccine. In his presentation, Dr. Galgiani will give an overview of the problem that valley fever poses for Arizonans and how we could reduce its impact on public health.

Happy New Year. No meeting was held in December; however, discussion was held with the Active Health Committee to review possibilities for collaboration. More to come. For those of you who have recently returned, you will find some minor improvements at the AFC. 1. A balance class has been added Mondays, 10:30 AM (requires an activity punch card), and a balance beam is now outside Lonnie's office, 2. Sun shades have been installed in the studio. 3. Wider steps are on all the ladders in the pool. 4. We are using the old method of simply signing up for lap lanes. After the holidays, many of us will be thinking about shedding some pounds. A recent article in the New York Times by Gretchen Reynolds (11/28) summarizes a study from Wake Forest University concerning muscle mass loss in the elderly when cutting calories. It was discovered that weight training seems to beat walking for helping retain mass. Proper hydration is vital. Did you know that drinking an extreme amount of water in a short period of time can cause the sodium level in the blood to drop to dangerous levels? It's called hyponatremia. A reminder: The studio is available for general use when it isn’t scheduled. Only gym shoes should be worn inside. A second reminder: Please sign up for a lane in the pool only immediately before your use.

Architectural Review Janice Strassburg 520-338-2568 janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3

We have covered hedges, six-foot shrubs, room additions and various other items pertinent to Architectural Review Committee (ARC). In the coming year, we feel certain that residents will continue to assure that the projects they hope to achieve will be submitted to the Community Services Coordinator. Those items approved by ARC will be noted in the property records. Based on the number of requests for fences and walls, the vegetation-eating wildlife may have to find greener pastures. We appreciate the residents of SCOV who strive to keep our community up-to-date. If you plan major changes to your property, you might give your neighbors a heads up.

Welcome to the new year and to the wonderful fresh displays in the SCOV Gift Shop. Please stop by to enjoy the work of featured artists Joyce Simmons and Marie Gagnon. L-R: Joyce Simmons, Marie Gagnon. Joyce scours the world looking for special components: Tibetan turquoise discovered in Vienna; jasper, opals, and raku from Mexico as examples. Joyce says, "I observe the 'soul color' of my treasure and create a unique design that will call to the woman who wears it. My jewelry is designed with love and attention. No two pieces are exactly the same." The joy of finding our artisan complex years ago led Marie back to oil painting, water color, drawing and on to our clay studio. Most of the clayware she produces is functional. After deciding what she will make, forms are constructed and designs hand engraved onto the clay. Glaze is applied by pouring, dipping or painting.

Perhaps a Good Idea If you have not already made a New Year’s resolution, it’s not too late to do so. Let’s try once again to make one and keep it this new year. How about making a resolution to take pride and care of ourselves, our homes and our property where we live. Most of us already do that, but just think how wonderful our community would look if we all did. The beautiful holiday decorations throughout the community over the past few weeks have certainly been enjoyed

by our committee members. As a friendly reminder though, seasonal decorations should be removed by January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property, and we are most pleased with how beautiful our community is looking to usher in the New Year. We wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2018.

Another drainage project will be the bottom fairway on #9 about 85 yards from the green. There is a naturally-shaped low area that tends to get wet. The sprinklers are turned down to help dry it out which results in damaged turf. A drain will be installed to help improve the entire area.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086 The business of golf requires a very structured system to run successfully and profitably. We recognize and understand the challenges and are capitalizing on opportunities to succeed. Maximizing the financial return for The Views Golf Club requires creating an added value experience. Keeping in mind that success of a golf course is dependent on understanding and ensuring that the value of the experience exceeds the price. Included in this plan is balancing the fact that discounting undermines not only the profits and the ability to preserve the course's rate integrity, but also damages the general pricing structure in the local golf communities. As we work to reach our budgeted goals, concessions must be made not only from the operator but the consumer as well. Challenges with operating costs are continually increasing, and the effects of supply and demand have made it difficult for golf facilities to be profitable. What’s the solution? This requires discipline, strong leadership, a dedicated staff, and community support with the desire and vision to succeed. Our success will ultimately be determined by the willingness and zeal of the community and the team to retain our current players and to generate new golfers as well. Our team is working to create fun events that attract golfers and nongolfers alike, inviting them to enjoy the club together. We believe it is the lifestyle that makes The Views Golf Club the place to be and we are planning activities that enhance our already active community. Please plan to join us Friday, January 26, for The Views Club Fair to find out more about what’s happening at the course. I look forward to our continued success and appreciate your support.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 Happy New Year. January is the time of year when normal activities in the golf course maintenance department really slow down. The cooler temperatures decrease the growth rate of the grass, so the amount of mowing is reduced. Less fertilizer and water are required for maintaining good turf health. This allows our department to catch up on other areas of the golf course, such as drainage projects, desert broom removal, tree trimming and landscaping. Some of the projects that are going to be addressed during this slow maintenance time will be thinning the desert around the driving range floor, so the Pro Shop can recover lost range balls and continue working on the sand depth in the traps to make sure there is adequate sand in the bottoms and the correct amount on the sides. More drainage projects will be completed this year to improve wet areas. The middle of the driving area has always been a problem with getting wet. A drain will be run down the middle of the floor and routed to the right of the lower target. This will not only alleviate an eyesore, but help the ball pickers retrieve balls without causing a mess.

Golf Advisory Chair Yvette Schulz 520-825-0797 Sep.-May, First Wed., 2 PM, WC3

The Golf Advisory Board is looking forward to helping our Director of Golf, Rick Price, implement some new programs at The Views Golf Club. Some of the possible programs include a beginners golf program that includes instruction and play of the golf course, casual golf group, couples golf, putting league and chipping and putting events on the golf course. In November, a Golf Fiesta was held to welcome back our golfers who were gone for the summer. The Views Golf Club also held an Adult Junior Miniature Golf Championship November 25. It has been reported that balls have been found in yards past the end of the driving range. If you hit your driver 300 yards, please do not use your driver on the range. Winter months in SCOV bring cool mornings, warm comfortable days and a pristine golf course waiting to test even the best. So, those of you who relish a challenge have some great opportunities this month. The 2018 golf season starts with a Two-Man Scramble on January 3. January 10 will be 1-5, 2-4, 3-3 Better Ball, and a Coyote Scramble is scheduled for January 17. Along with the regular Wednesday games, the Governor's Cup, a Two-Man Low Net event is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24, Saturday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 31. The games will more than likely be a Scramble, Best Ball and Chapman, not necessarily in that order. Now would be a good time to line up a sympathetic partner. You can pick up the new 2018 member handbook in the Pro Shop for such helpful information as members' names and telephone numbers and descriptions of the games. Cool mornings can bring frost delays, so to get this information before heading for the door, call 520-825-0322 for current playing conditions. Have a great year and see you on the links.

Happy New Year from The Views Restaurant. With the new year upon us, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome back all the seasonal residents and thank all the permanent residents for their patronage over the summer and fall. To catch up our seasonal residents, we have had some exciting events over the last few months. We had a dinner and show for Hallows Eve which was phenomenal. It featured an incredible performer doing mind-blowing magic and telling great haunted Tucson ghost stories. We had a great Thanksgiving with glowing reviews, a beautiful fivecourse wine dinner for the holidays, and we launched a new menu. Looking to the future, we have our first event of the season coming February 14 for Valentine’s Day. It will be a threecourse meal and an optional wine pairing for each course. More details to come. In addition, make sure you check out the other events we have added. We have karaoke every Sunday, Wine Try and Buy and Paint Nites every month. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Sewing Thimblelenas

Penny Burroughs 530-545-2642 Pam Miller 719-244-1396 Mon.-Fri., 9 AM-Noon and 1-4 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

At Thimblelenas annual meeting in December, a new slate of officers was elected for 2018: Co-Pres., Penny Burroughs and Pam Miller; Sec., Susan Landwer and Co-Treas., Zora Saunders and Gina Russell. The impressive reports from each sewing group added up to thousands of articles given to so many charities in the area. Have you wanted to do some relaxing sewing with great friends? Let’s get you trained on the machines. Use of the room and equipment requires an hour orientation class for first-time users. You can sign up for the next orientation session and class Friday, January 19, listed on sheets posted outside of the Sewing Room door. Maybe you will be one of those who can’t resist being involved in several groups: Sun City Vistoso Quilters, Machine Embroidery, Tapestry Rug Hooking, Cheer Bears, Pet Beds, Seniors for Kids and Casa Amigas. Casa Amigas

Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 Mon. and Thu., 9 AM-Noon, Artisan Center/Sewing

Penny Burroughs and Pam Miller are the leaders for the Casa Amigas quilting group. During this past year they spearheaded a project to provide the Tri-Community Clothing Bank's Blanket Drive with homemade quilts. Using several years worth of donated fabric, they were able to complete 31 quilts. Several members of Casa Amigas contributed hours of sewing in addition to cutting, pinning, embroidering and binding the quilts. We truly enjoy working together on projects that contribute to the well-being of others in need. It could be sewing Christmas bags with goodies for children, pillowcases and fleece blankets for teens or walker and wheelchair bags for veterans at the VA hospital. We're always looking for new projects. Come join us if you sew, quilt or machine embroider. If you have used sheets, we can use them to create fun pillowcases. Bring donations of fabric or yarn you might have stashed away to the Sewing Room. It might be just what we're looking for.

Welcome to 2018. The woodshop has been very busy all of 2017, and we expect the same for 2018. At our last club meeting approval was given for an additional portable work table. The table was a donation and will show up sometime in the spring. Bob Watson agreed to take over the job of Membership Chairman. Along that line, now is a good time to get your annual dues paid. You can then be included on the membership roll right away in 2018. At our end-of-year luncheon, Colin Kaltenbach volunteered to take over for Hugh Madson as reporting secretary. Thank you, Colin. Children were snatched from poor families and then “sold” for adoption to wealthy families. You will recognize the names of some of her famous clients. Our book for February 5 is Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance. Vance attempts to explain the anger and disaffection of the white denizens of the Rust Belt via the experiences of his own upbringing. It’s hard to escape a legacy of abuse, alcohol, drugs and poverty. This is a well-written account of anger, pain and love combined with cultural influence.

Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 9:30-11:30 AM, WC1

Poets can be classicists or modernists, story tellers, philosophers or people who think about life in different ways. They can, in fact, be all of these and more. Poets Corner member Jim Pavlakis likes to experiment with subjects as well as form. The following recent effort is very reflective, examining an idea in everyday language but definitely not everyday style, allowing the reader to connect with what he’s thinking and be intrigued. A Piece of Always In the then of long ago, through the fog of soon, soon, somehow, the way was found to now. It does not stop to let the future start. The future never comes except in mind’s designs. Now is the ever present that is never done, Now is a piece of always. The Poets Corner welcomes new members. Make it a resolution, if you like creating poems.

Happy New Year. It's a brand new year and time to commit to a new exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Forty years after his death, the system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates to strengthen your core muscles (abdomen and back muscles), has never been in such high demand. Fortunately, SCOV offers these special Pilates classes here twice each week. People ask, "Can the benefits which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body's core, increase spine mobility and build flexibility?" The answer is a definite yes. There are

"The Police Department has been accepting medications, both pills and liquids, for nine years now, and we have our total (year- todate), and I thought people may have an interest in how much we have taken in. "Our first year of collection at SCOV disposed of 151 pounds of medications. Our highest collection year was 2013 with 2,281 pounds, and most recently, in 2017, we disposed of 1,886 pounds. Since 2009, the program has safely disposed of 12,988 pounds of unused medications." In answer to the commonly asked question, "Where are the drugs disposed of?", all medications are taken back to OVPD's property and ID department and incinerated at 1,800 degrees. Dispose-A-Med collection dates for SCOV in 2018 are January 9, March 6, September 11 and November 13, all from 9-11AM.
