Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCVCAI Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Vistoso as an active adult community. SCVCAI Board of Directors Newsletter A bimonthly newsletter by Director Janice Strassburg about the activities and items discussed by the BOD is available by ListServ. To sign up, go to www.suncityvistoso.com, hold your mouse over News and Info, click on In the Know, put in your email address and click on Submit button. Select any of the notifications you would like to receive and click on the Submit button. For those who do not have access to a computer, a copy is available for reading in the library. How are our finances? by Ruth Gitzendanner As Board Treasurer, I feel very good about our current financial status. We once again have a positive balance in the Capital Fund after renovation of the Café and Craft Complex. The Association has a sound budget for the coming year, with no increase in our homeowners’ dues. What do we get for a little less than $130 a month? Use of craft and recreational facilities, a safe neighborhood, gorgeous mountain views and more. Our golf course is in great shape. We are increasing revenue from public play to offset our residents’ diminishing use of the course – while our staff works hard to bring in this revenue without affecting the value of the course to our residents. The Landscape Committee is busy planning the updating of our landscaping, with much of the work to be done in-house by Mary’s crew. The tennis courts have recently been renovated and we now have pickle ball courts. Outside revenue is contributing to the success of our Café. As I reflect on the purchase and renovation of the Vistoso Center several years ago, I am amazed at the many benefits we enjoy because we took this step forward. We have a great library, dedicated space for the Computer Club, Photography Club and Genealogy Club, and comfortable meeting space for the Board and our committees. We are indeed fortunate to have so many things that serve our varied interests while keeping us healthy in mind and body. Since we have done well in managing our finances, we are now in a position to plan for the future needs of our community. As you know, the Board is considering plans to update the Aquatic & Fitness Center (formerly the Sports Complex) and add pickle ball courts. You can be confident that we are moving cautiously and systematically, and that you will have the opportunity to vote on these plans. We are endeavoring to make the best decisions to keep Sun City Vistoso a vibrant, desirable community that continues to be fiscally sound.

Vacant House Tips by Bob Mariani

It may be a bit late for this article but if you’re leaving Sun City Vistoso for the summer or taking an extended vacation, here are some tips that may help you. • Contact the Association office at 825-3711 or stop by the office and complete a contact form so you can be contacted in case of an urgent situation with your home. • Have someone keep your landscaping in good condi tion. Shrubs need trimming and weeds need to be kept under control whether you are living here, are living in your summer home or are on vacation. • Trim your bushes and trees before leaving, especially if they rest right next to your house. This way, if anyone is trying to get in, they will be more noticeably visible. • Check all the locks before you leave. If a lock seems loose or rusty, replace it or tighten it. • If you regularly turn your outdoor lights on, set them on a timer so that they continue to turn on each evening. Keep them off if they aren’t normally on. Set some of your indoor lights on a timer too so it looks like some one is home. • Advise the Oro Valley Police Department and ask them to provide you with “Darkhouse” service. Call 229 5080 and you’ll receive regular checks of your home while you’re gone. • Ask a trusted neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail while you’re gone, and to keep a watch on your home. You could also let the post office know you’ll be away so they hold your mail or forward it. • Draw your blinds or curtains. This doesn’t allow any one to take a sneak peek at your belongings and it will keep your interior at a more steady temperature. • Disconnect electrical items, including your TV, radio, toaster and anything you possibly can. Not only does this avoid fire damages, but it saves on energy too! You can even go as far as turning off your water heater or your water to the interior of your house.

Association Committees Committee meetings are open and all residents are welcome to attend. ARC Architectural Review Chair Susan Jakosa 609-6367, susanjakosa@gmail.com Second and fourth Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

Generally, any planned work that changes the exterior appearance of your home or property (not including maintenance, repair work or minor landscaping) requires approval by either Jim Cundiff, Community Services Coordinator, or the ARC. Planned work can be a proposed change, an upgrade or an improvement to your home or property. To name a few items; new or replacement windows or doors, walls, gates, wrought iron fences, satellite dishes, patios and courtyards, a new addition or a new house color all require approval before you begin your project A current copy of the Development Standards is online or at the CSC’s office. If you’re not sure you need approval, please call. One of the main reasons our subdivision remains so lovely is due to the standards that we all agreed to abide by when we moved here. We will be more than happy to help you through the process. Communications Committee Leslie Platt 520-818-1963

Why do we need a Communications Committee? Despite the many sources of information currently available to Sun City Vistoso residents, rumors and misconceptions often seem to predominate our conversations. Recognizing the need for additional ways to provide accurate information, the Board has given the Communications Committee the objective of developing “methods that enable the Association to engage all residents in the communication process, thereby gaining their understanding, input and participation in developing Association initiatives.” While it is the obligation of the Board to communicate openly and clearly, it is the obligation of residents to keep themselves informed. There are already many ways to do this. All Board meetings and Study Sessions are open to residents, with time set aside to ask questions and provide input. The General Manager and a Board member hold frequent coffees for conversations with residents in a small group setting. Tipster editorials and Association committee articles provide the latest information. Board, Study Session and committee agendas and minutes are all available online. Email users can obtain frequent “news” bulletins on ListServ. Factual answers to residents’ questions are provided on our website; just click on FAQ. The Communications Committee is interested in your ideas about how we can further improve our dialogue. Please send them to Leslie Platt or attend our meetings, which will be announced. Community Assistance Committee Chair George Holthus 818-1042; Susie Klein 825-7535

aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. We ended the fiscal year, June 30, 2011. In June we delivered 480 pounds of cans which netted the CAC $369.60. For the year, we delivered 6,003 pounds for which we received $3,872.12. Since the CAC started taking cans to the scrap yard in 2005, they have delivered 39,216 pounds of aluminum and received $24,261.88 for the effort. Thanks go to all who have participated in this project. Your efforts are most appreciated. The summer months tend to be a little slower in Sun City Vistoso with many clubs and activities not meeting. The Loan Room, run by CAC, is open during the summer, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 to 9 AM . Our residents sometimes take the summer for elective surgery so we keep a good supply of medical equipment that some may need. Please come to the Loan Room (at the end of the Cart Barn) and look at what we have available to meet your needs. Government Affairs Chair Hal Linton 825-2812, haling@comcast.net Second Wednesday, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui Veteran Burial and Ceremonial Benefits

SCV residents recently received a presentation from the Oro Valley Legion Post 132 on burial and ceremonial benefits that a veteran has earned through service to his/her country. The review, entitled TAPS, was presented by three veterans and was supported by information gathered by researching local funeral homes and the Veterans Administration. Preplanning while the veteran is still alive and able to contribute information was emphasized. A copy of the presentation was available as a take-away kit. Highlights included the background of Taps bugle call, what the government provides at no cost, documentation needed to claim the free services, markers and cemeteries available, and the ceremonial aspects of a veteran’s funeral. Although Oro Valley Post 132 is relatively new, it has grown into an energetic, community force. For further information on the Post and its activities, contact Ed Davis 2291064.

Green Energy Committee Co-Chairs Beverley Browne 825-2921 and Ed Kennedy 825-3659 First and Third Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui Noisy A/C Compressor?

If your A/C compressor unit is making a lot of noise, it is probably time for some preventive maintenance work and/or a service call. There are some things a homeowner can do as a first level check: make sure the unit is level, make sure the enclosure panels or screens are fastened securely, remove any debris (if you can) that may have found its way inside the unit. As one last self-help step, make sure all plant material or foliage is removed or cut back at least one foot around the unit. This will permit better airflow to the unit. These steps alone may not eliminate noise or reduce energy consumption. In that case, it is time for a service call by a reputable company. A/C units wear out over time, and the money invested in a service call now could pay longer-term dividends. Image Committee Lauren Thompson 306-9750

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache Sincere Thanks

A most sincere thank you goes to those residents who cleaned up their properties from all the frost damage that was caused by last winter’s low temperatures. In the past 20 years, that was the worst we’ve had, and we hope we go another 20+ years before we see it again. Our monsoon season is just around the corner, and that is when the growth of our foliage takes off, proving that things do grow quickly in the desert. Pay particular attention to removing weeds that pop up in the cracks where the sidewalk meets the street. The strong winds which accompany monsoon rains can lift and move roof tiles, rip limbs and branches right from the tree trunk and topple entire trees. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see any damage. With many residents away, it’s helpful to keep an eye out for each other. Take pride in your property and that of your friends and neighbors.

Robin Coulter, Assistant General Manager Finding Solutions, Working Together

Author Stephen Covey has recently had an article in USA Today Weekend about the Seven Highly Effective Ways to Help Americans Get Along. While his emphasis was focused toward those from differing sides of the aisle politically, the concept could be applied to any situation with people who have different opinions and perceptions. Two recent issues, opening the golf course to public play and the aquatic and fitness center, are examples of how our community has worked to listen to each other, try to understand each other’s perspective and find a third alternative. We know that as we approach projects or problems in our community that most likely we will have individuals opposed and in favor of the issue and many somewhere in between. As solutions are sought it would be unfortunate to sacrifice our sense of community because we cannot give a little, hopefully receive a little and find a solution that works for us. Perhaps it’s unrealistic to have such a goal, but I think it’s worthy. In the coming days there will be opportunities for us to work toward this goal. We will be able to listen to each other, to understand both sides of the issue, to look at the big picture and how it affects you, me and us as a community. For the Covey article, please follow this link: http:// www.stephencovey.com/community/groups/usatoday/USAWjan17-COVEYinside.pdf Pam Sarpalius, Programs/Facilities Director Summer Months

Residents ask, what is going on during the summer? A few of these events may interest you. Tickets are now on sale for the TSO (Tucson Symphony Orchestra) Pops and Classics. The Sun City Singers will present a great fourth of July show. There are two free events from the Golder Ranch Fire Dept. in July. Come cheer on the Special Olympians as they compete in our pool, bocce ball courts and golf course in August. Tickets will Sun City Vistoso Tipster, July 2011

go on sale in August for our second bus trip to the DBacks, Rock ‘N Roll club will be having a dance in July. Line dancers and square dancers meet each week. Dinner and Show club has a “Padres” game event in July, Havurah is planning a summer movie and supper. Mexican Train Dominoes is always a fun game. All of our card clubs meet during the summer. If you think it’s too warm to golf or play tennis go to the Desert Oasis and play the games on our Wii system. I am sure I have missed a few clubs with summer events so be sure to read the club articles in the Tipster. We don’t bring in performers during the summer since the cost of entertainment is high and we have fewer residents to attend events so the ticket prices would be well over $20 pp. Keep in mind that there is always plenty to do year round in Sun City Vistoso. Carol Wittels, SCV Library

We are very concerned and upset about the recent losses of DVDs experienced in the library. A sincere thank you to residents who have expressed their disbelief that such an event could occur in their library. Please be assured that some of the videos will be replaced (those purchased in 2010 and 2011). Friends of the Library will be assisting the library with funds to replace these items. Older films that were still popular will be considered if very special sale prices become available for purchase or if they are donated by residents. Thanks also to management and volunteers who have been helpful in recommending areas where we may be better protected should such an attempt occur in the future. Studies show that weight loss plans with bursts of highintensity activity can boost your calorie burn more than steady-paced training. Interval training increases the mitochondrial activity in the muscle, which is a scientific way of saying it increases your cells fat-burning capacity. Because intervals are harder than one-speed workouts, it takes more time for your body to return to normal, so your metabolism stays elevated longer. In a College of New Jersey study of 48 men and women, researchers found that those who rode stationary bikes at varying intensities, such as pedaling just a little harder for 5 minutes and then a little easier for 5 minutes over a half-hour workout, burned about 15% more calories for about 30 minutes after their sessions than their peers who stuck to one moderate pace the entire time. Golf Kim Griggs, Head Golf Professional

Tee times are starting earlier, therefore walkers will need to have their morning walks completed by 6 AM, and may walk in the evenings after 6 PM. This request is for the walkers’ safety and courtesy to the golfers. During the months of July and August we will be reconstructing our sand traps. This will involve heavy machinery on the course, so please be careful. Pet Owners: please be advised that pets (except guide dogs) are prohibited at all times on the golf course. Also, please remember that everyone must check in to the Pro Shop prior to playing golf. If the shop is closed, please return the next morning and pay your appropriate fees. A friendly reminder: the snakes are now out and moving around on a regular basis. Please be very careful and do not provoke them in any way. If you feel that a snake needs to be removed from the golf course, or any other area, please call us and we will send someone to take care of the situation. Be aware that the Driving Range will close at 1 PM on Mondays and 3 PM on Wednesdays. This is done so we can clean, pick and the maintenance crew can mow. Pro Shop Clearance Sale through Wednesday, August 31. If you have never visited our Pro Shop, this is the time to check it out. We have all golf shoes marked down 35%, putters and wedges are reduced 30%. Also we have a clearance table with many great bargains. Stop in and say hello to our friendly staff and get a great deal! Michael Kropf, Superintendent

July is the time of the summer when the monsoons start to pop up in southern Arizona. These storms have both negative and positive effects on the golf course. The associated rise in humidity brings a surge of growth in the Bermuda grass that helps the fairways, tees and greens recover from tranJuly 2011, Sun City Vistoso Tipster

sition. However, the Bermuda grass begins to grow so quickly the roughs start to get very thick and difficult for playability. This year, the roughs will not only be sprayed with a growth regulator to slow this surge of growth, but they will also be dethatched to thin out the grass. The monsoons can also bring destructive rains. It has been several years since we have sustained heavy storm damage, but this year the concerns will be higher due to the sand trap renovation project. A heavy rain will not only stop the work being performed, but it will also wash out sod areas and potentially contaminate the brand new sand. This is why the project is being pushed to start as close to Friday, July 1, as possible. The sand trap project is going to be a very large-scale project. Please be aware that large equipment will be spread around the golf course. The impact on play will be minimized as much as possible, but keep in touch with the Pro Shop on what holes are closed for each day. Many areas are going to be marked “ground under repair.” Please stay off them so they can heal quickly. Golf Advisory Payton Davies Chair 825-5352 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache

There will be no meeting in August. You may have noticed new and interesting pin placements. People have commented that the old rotation of red, white and blue was too predictable. Golf Advisory asked if this rotation could be changed. A plan was developed to divide the greens into five sections. The positions will remain red, white and blue, but will be in a more random order. The goal is to use more of the greens, allowing the holes more time to heal. We are all anxious to complete the new bunkers. At the same time, any renovation causes disruption. Remember how difficult it was when we were paving our cart paths? However, the end result was more than worthwhile. A few changes will be made in the shapes of the bunkers, but most of the changes will make maintenance much easier, less expensive and easier for the golfer to “play out”. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club Pres. Bob Farmer 818-1522 Membership Dick Boss 638-6644 Play: Wednesdays

It is up to all dog owners to protect our pets from wildlife here in the desert. Coyotes, bobcats, javelinas, snakes and toads all pose threats. So it is important to keep pets leashed and closely supervised. If you see wildlife on your walks, guide your dog away and keep clear of any interaction. One good way to offer your dog some free-running fun is to join Fido’s Friends and bring your dog to the Dog Park in Sun City Vistoso so that the dog can enjoy off-leash exercise with other dogs in a safe, fenced-in park. Call Elaine at the number above to inquire about membership in Fido’s Friends and access to the Sun City Vistoso Dog Park.
