From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Area Cultural Influences and Names by Jan Fischer When the Marketing Committee first presented their report on the name changes for our community and recreation buildings, I was disappointed they disapproved of the current names. Therefore, when I was given the assignment of writing an article for the Tipster, it seemed to be an opportunity for me to pass along some information about where we live: Southern Arizona, Pima County and Oro Valley. Many of you are only in Oro Valley during our winter months so seeing a summer monsoon rain move across the lower valley in July and August is something you have never observed and been in awe of, or you may not be aware of the history of our area. Oro Valley and the Honey Bee Canyon area has been inhabited for approximately 2000 years. The Hohokam tribe lived in the Honey Bee Village at the foot of the Tortolita Mountains for nearly 700 years. The early 16th century brought the Apache to Southern Arizona including Oro Valley. After the Apaches, came the Spanish Conquistadors. They established forts throughout the Pima County area including the original Presidio of Tucson in 1775. Later the pioneers came into the territory of Arizona. This migration to the territory began after the Spanish-American War and the subsequent Gadsden Purchase which included Southern Arizona. Some of the surnames of early Tucson pioneers were Samaneigo, Romero and Jacome. Later came the Steinfelds, Corbetts and George Pusch, a German immigrant, who established a cattle ranch. These pioneers brought commerce and trade to the territory and sometimes perished at the hands of the Apaches, Yaquis and other tribes wanting to protect their land. There was also disease, heat and deadly wildlife in competition for the land and water. Against the odds, these pioneers and the Presidio survived In conclusion I want to acknowledge the hard work and time the Marketing Committee put into thinking how best to market our community. However, I believe the committee failed to recognize the heritage of this area and the meaning of the names which were originally given to our buildings.

Fitness Center Project

The Town of Oro Valley plan review and permitting process is somewhat unpredictable. However, if all goes reasonably well, the fitness center project construction should be very close to underway by the time you read this article. Before SCOV is able to experience a beautifully renovated and enlarged fitness center, we’ll all have to endure the less than desirable activities that are part of a large construction project which will impact the entire Mountain Vista Complex. There will be dozens of construction personnel working on the project daily. Along with these workers will come noise from demolition equipment, hammers and saws. There will also be dust that is always a danger in the desert due to Valley Fever. We’ll experience additional traffic from construction equipment and workers in and out of the Complex that can be a safety issue. It will require all of us to be extra careful. Along with this traffic, we will lose some parking area to provide space to store construction materials. Another inconvenience is that access to the swimming pool will be altered as the normal entry to the pool will be closed. Access will be through a temporary gate on the north side of the pool. The best way to get to this gate is either through the craft area or by driving a cart or walking around the back of the pool. As previously noted, the pool will remain open as often as possible but will be closed at times due to a lack of power and/or other issues. These closures may come with little warning. I realize that it won’t be easy to get through the trials and tribulations of this large project that is in the middle of the Mountain Vista Complex, however, if we’re all patient and cooperative, it will be manageable. Keep in mind that once the construction is complete, SCOV will have a fantastic fitness center that I am confident will be enjoyed by many more residents than in the past.

As new co-chair of the ARC, I would like to introduce myself. Jane and I came to AZ from downstate IL and have lived here for nearly six years on Sutherland Wash. This is my third year on the ARC. I have served on one of the committees making recommendations on renovating the Fitness Center, and I am a SCOV Ambassador. I hope to continue this philosophy for the ARC: Tell us what you want to do, and we’ll try to help you get it done, within the Association’s standards. Our meetings are always open, and we welcome you whether or not you have business with the committee. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions or comments you may have.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please help us by recycling your aluminum cans, but place your trash in your own trash containers. CAC volunteers delivered their ninth can load for the year to the recycling center. The 500 pounds delivered netted $315, bringing the year-to-date poundage to 4,640 pounds and the revenue to $2,861.40. Summer has arrived and the Loan Room is quieter than through the winter. It is the perfect time for those residents still around to visit us and see what equipment we have available to loan. The Loan Room remains open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM throughout the summer months; reservations and pick up are at the end of the Cart Barn. We look forward to seeing you. Consumer Referral

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, Welcome Center/Conference 3 Keep The Pride

Why do we choose to live in SCOV? Is it the friendly neighbors? Is it the well-maintained yards? We are proud to live here and can’t imagine living anywhere else. Part of the reason this community is friendly and well-maintained has to do with the work done by the Neighborhood Pride Committee. Soon, the monsoon season will arrive to bring muchneeded rain and cause our plants to take off. Weeds may pop up in the cracks of sidewalks and at the edge of the street. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to remove those weeds. Strong winds come with the monsoons and can cause damage. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see roof damage. With so many of our residents away, let’s keep an eye out for each other. Please take pride not only in your property, but also that of your neighbors and friends. Posse

You are having a medical emergency in your home, and emergency medical technicians arrive. You are unable to communicate with them. The medic goes to your refrigerator and finds a red plastic pouch on the door bearing the words FILE OF LIFE. In the pouch, the medic finds a card that you have previously filled out with a brief summary of your medical history, medication list, doctor’s name and phone number, emergency contacts and more. The medics now have vital information that Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, July 2013

can be used in making decisions about your treatment.

Through the cooperative efforts of the Golder Ranch Fire District, Oro Valley Police Department and your SCOV Posse, File of Life pouches and cards will be made available to SCOV residents in the near future. Detailed information will be published in the Posse website and other SCOV media. Properties

Dick Gillespie 825-3901 No scheduled meeting for July

The Properties Committee was asked to reevaluate last year’s Properties Committee’s recommendation to construct additional Pickleball courts south of the existing Bocce courts. A subcommittee researched this and reaffirmed last year’s committee’s conclusion. This recommendation was accepted by the full committee and forwarded to the Board for their consideration. The SCOV Board asked the Properties Committee to develop a prioritized list of capital projects for them to consider. Eight projects were evaluated and prioritized at our May 2013 meeting. The priority recommendations were forwarded to the SCOV Board leadership for further action. It was also recommended that a five year capital spending plan be adopted using these priorities as appropriate Dick Gillespie attended the May 28 Board meeting and explained the process the Committee followed to prioritize capital projects. Where’s Waldo? The pop culture seek and find game of Waldo, clad in a red and white shirt and cap, lost in a sea of people is designed to entertain, but it’s not entertaining when you’re trying to find something in the minutes listed on our website. There was a file for every month, for every agenda, for every set of minutes, for every study session and for every set of notes from the study sessions. Documents upon documents upon documents. You could spend a good amount of time just opening the documents. To improve your experience of the website, the Board minutes, agendas, study session notes and study session agendas have been made searchable and combined into fewer files. Go to our website at scovaz.com. Select the Association tab and then Agendas & Minutes. This page has been tidied up, improved and provides searchable documents. The documents are segmented into fiscal years, and the minutes date back to fiscal year, 2005-2006. So, next time you’re wondering when the Board took a specific action, you can open the document and search for that topic. It may not be as entertaining as looking for Waldo, but it will be helpful. Looking for Something to Do?

I have arranged for delivery of a new publication about the Tucson area. It is called “Tucson Happenings.” This is a monthly free publication and informs you about what is going on around the Tucson area. There is a wire rack holding this publication in the Library lobby. Be sure to pick one up each month. I am sure this publication will be a great help to new residents as well as old. Don’t forget to visit the new Town of Oro Valley Aquatic Center for the day. There are lap lanes, a splash area for the kids, and a water slide. There are air conditioned locker rooms and a concession area if you would like something to eat. You can go to the Town of Oro Valley website to learn about competitions that are being held in the pool and you may want to sit in the covered stands to watch an event. Don’t want to be out in the heat and play golf? Why not play indoors at the Desert Oasis on our Wii system. Call the Desert Oasis to reserve a time. Community Services - Jim Cundiff

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis

How important are fluids in the Summer?

Fluid replacement is probably the most important nutritional concern for the exerciser. Approximately 60% of your body weight is water. As you exercise, fluid is lost through your skin as sweat and through your lungs when you breathe. If this fluid is not replaced at regular intervals during exercise, you can become dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, you have a smaller volume of blood circulating through your body. Consequently, the amount of blood your heart pumps with each beat decreases and your exercising muscles do not receive enough oxygen from your blood. Soon exhaustion sets in and your athletic performance suffers. If you have lost as little as 2% of your body weight due to dehydration, it can adversely affect your athletic performance. For example, if you are a 150-pound athlete and you lose three pounds during a workout, your performance will start to suffer unless you replace the fluid you have lost. Proper fluid replacement is the key to preventing dehydration and reducing the risk of heat injury during training.

Construction alert... Please keep in mind that the fitness center construction will require that the swimming pool will be closed from time to time which may result in cancellation of classes that are held in the pool. If you haven’t heard by now, the Hopi Room in the Activity Center will be used as a temporary gym during the time that the fitness center is under construction. Although this temporary facility isn’t large enough to accommodate all of the fitness equipment, there will be ample cardio and strength equipment to provide a very good workout for most, if not all, residents who choose to use the facility. Aquatic & Fitness Center and Desert Oasis: See the Hours of Operation, Tipster, page two. Tuesday, July 9, 7 AM, the Aquatic & Fitness Center pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, July 10, the Desert Oasis pool will close at 7 AM for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Special Note from the Aquatic & Fitness Center: On Thursday, July 11, 1 PM, an orientation will be held on how to use the gym equipment. Space is limited. See Lonnie Davis or call 917-8073.

that a snake needs to be removed from the golf course or any other area, please call us and we will send someone to take care of the situation. Please also stay hydrated and drink plenty of water as our temperatures have been in the triple digits lately. If you use our Driving Range, please be aware that we close the Driving Range at 3 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is done so we can clean pick the range and the maintenance crew can mow. The same dress code applies to the driving range as it does to the golf course. Pro Shop Clearance Sale: if you have never been to our Pro Shop, this is the time to check it out. We have all our golf shoes marked down 40%, several clubs are reduced to cost and we also have a clearance rack with many great bargains. Stop in and say hello to our friendly staff and get a great deal! Superintendent - Michael Kropf July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in Southern Arizona. In regards to golf course maintenance, the start of monsoons is bitter sweet. The good news is the golf course will start to green up quickly from the harsh dry weather of June because of the increased humidity combined with hot temperatures. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. Last summer, a storm generated a large amount of water north of SCOV, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were between the wash on #4 green and #5 fairway when water filled the wash quickly. Two golf carts tried to cross the wash and were buried in sand. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it took a couple of hours for the water to recede and to dig golf carts out of the sand. Please remember, when these washes are running they are very powerful. The wash on #5 can be literally a raging river. Don’t drive around the course and attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is either covered with water or sand. At a minimum, the golf cart will be stranded until the staff is able to rescue the cart. Be aware that during the monsoons it doesn’t matter if it is raining or not for the washes to flow. Chair Howard Schulz 825-0797 schultz2008@q.com First Wednesday, 2 PM, Welcome Center/Conference 3

A special thank-you goes to Preston Sheriff and Mike Stankiewicz for updating the pin placement sheets. Emphasis was placed on improving daily maintenance crew communications on locations and a reasonable mix of colored flags on the par threes and fives. Based on input from golfers to improve chipping and hold shots closer to the greens, a test will be conducted to increase rye grass areas around the front nine greens. The front nine was chosen since additional rye grass will see frost accumulation and the potential for winter frost delays. These delays are addressed with the normal proSun City Oro Valley Tipster, July 2013

cess of teeing off on #10. How the Bermuda grass responds to the additional rye over-seed is the primary reason for this test. Additional plugging may be required to aid root growth. By summer 2014, more information should be available. Thank you, Mike Kropf! The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club

With hot weather, we have extra concerns about our dogs’ health and comfort. Please remember that when you are walking your dog, it is 10 to 15 degrees warmer down at his level than at the level of your head. He is feeling the heat from the pavement, and if his fur is a dark color, he is absorbing more heat. Seek shady places to walk your dog, go out early before the sun starts heating up the pavements and take the dog for a nice walk after dark to enjoy the evening’s coolness. Be sure you have plenty of water to offer your dog during summer walks. Keep a close eye on your dog for signs of heat stress.

Financial Strategies

Jim Huffer 825-8743 First and Third Tuesdays, 9 AM, Activity Center/Hopi

We’ll see you again September 3. We will bring our own investment ideas to the meeting and research them together, using a commerciallyavailable program. Vistoso Native American Flute Circle

The purpose of this new club is to provide a community drum circle for any woman wanting to connect with others through hand drumming, using African Djembe drums, hand-held Native American frame drums and other small percussion instruments. For thousands of years, people worldwide have used group drumming to energize minds and bodies, strengthen community bonds, release stress and to celebrate life. Recent clinical studies have also conclusively documented some of the many physical, mental and emotional benefits of purpose-driven drumming. All women are welcome regardless of experience. Come join the fun. Drums and instruments are provided for those without or just listen to the rhythms. Energetic Exercise

Learning to play a new musical instrument is one way to keep your mind alert. Our club offers you the opportunity to play the Native American Flute. You do not need to know how to read music and it is easy to learn with only five basic notes. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is once again hosting flute players from the Tucson area Native American Flute Circles, including our own Vistoso circle, for their Summer Saturday evenings. During July and August from 7-9 PM, flute players from local circles will be playing their favorite songs under the desert skies. Jim Williams 818-2226 jaswilliams128@msn.com www.scovaz.com/clubs/hiking

Last month’s column featured tips for hiking in the heat. At the risk of being redundant, those tips are worth repeating. First, bring more water than you know you’ll need. Club members have been known to help out other hikers who have run out of water. Second, bring and use electrolytes either in the form of tablets or drinks like Gatorade. When the humidity is low, the body doesn’t appear to sweat but nonetheless, it is losing essential salts and minerals. Third, take the food you’ll need. Protein is very important Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, July 2013

as it prolongs the life of energy-producing carbohydrates. And, last of all, begin hiking early in the day. Most club hikes leave at or before 6 AM. If you are new to our community, summer is a great time to join the hiking club. Contact Jim Williams to schedule an orientation hike. Horseshoes

We’re often asked how we’re able to present so many wonderful classes, semester after semester, year after year. With approximately 28 annually, the search never stops for people willing to become moderators. Most are identified through our extremely active Curriculum Committee; others come forward with ideas they think can be translated into a class; still others are recruited by ILR members who have noticed that their neighbor or friend seems unusually knowledgeable about a particular topic. All are volunteers. If you would like to explore the possibility of becoming an ILR moderator, contact any of the officers listed above or any of the Curriculum Committee. While many moderators have enjoyed academic careers, many others are pursuing subjects which fascinate them. For example, a retired construction administrator and former international businessman will lead groups next fall. Late registration is August 19-24. Course Descriptions are available at Catalina Vista, the Library lounge or the website noted above. Japanese Flower Arranging

Elise Asch 818-1345 Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis/Saguaro

Narrative poems are similar to ballads, but their storytelling may not fit the constraints of a structured form or easily convert to song. Their emotional appeal may be more subtle and more tugging. What I Didn’t Do by Danusha Lameris tells a poignant story about a woman who seems to regret that she never did what she believes she should have done. The reader is drawn in from the outset: “I never called her back, the woman with the two babies born just like mine: girls who couldn’t crawl or talk, could barely smile, who lay there, bundled in flowered dresses, staring at the ceiling.” Narrative poems may be recreations of actual events or totally fictive. Their effectiveness lies in the telling, and writing effective poems is what our weekly meetings are meant to encourage. Please note we’ve moved to Desert Oasis for the summer. Poker

Absolute requirements are to leave politics and religion at the front door and come with the intention of having three hours of enjoyable, no-hassle, understandable poker.
