General Manager - Bob Mariani

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board Of Directors - Article Susan Jakosa susanjakosa@gmail.com

Keep SCOV Looking Great by Susan Jakosa Whenever I am driving around, I cannot help but notice that so many newer residential subdivisions look very much like SCOV. Aside from elevations, these newer developments often closely resemble SCOV in their layouts, common areas, landscaping, architectural design, color schemes and even amenities. Put differently, it is remarkable and comforting just how fresh, contemporary and exciting SCOV looks today even in comparison to much newer developments. Coincidental? Absolutely not. Our community has stayed young and vibrant due to the continuing maintenance and updating efforts by our residents, committees, staff and Board of Directors. The Board does have open meetings every month except July and August although Special Sessions may be arranged whenever necessary. Most committees also adjourn during the summer months so that volunteer members may enjoy a lengthy vacation, visit the kids, spoil the grandkids or simply enjoy their other home. However, the ARC (Architectural Review Committee) is the only committee which meets twice a month every month. Why? Because residents are busy every month maintaining and updating their homes and property. To ensure that our community continues to look great and that property values are protected, many of these upgrades must be done within the guidance of the ARC and the stipulations of our Development Standards and the Master Declaration. Some activities may also require permitting by the Town of Oro Valley. ARC members deal with resident submittals that are completed and returned to the CSC (Community Services Coordinator) for required approval by the ARC. ARC members are also available for questions, consults and guidance. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. Some submittals, such as painting a house or fence, may be approved personally by Katy Mosier, our CSC. In the one-year period from May 2015 through April 2016, Katy approved 478 submittals. During the same period, ARC members dealt with 318 submittals. These are incredible numbers that keep SCOV looking great. The ARC will be busy for the next few months and, if needed, you can be too. In the meantime, have a Happy 4th of July and just enjoy the summertime.

bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 Our Goal, The Best Resident Golfer Experience Possible The Board of Directors, Golf Advisory Committee, Marketing Committee and Management continually seek ways to improve the residents’ golf experience at The Views Golf Club. We realize there are many choices in the area. As a result, it is critical that every measure is taken to make sure you, our SCOV residents, have nothing but a superior experience every time you play The Views. Below are several of the ways that value has been added to your golf experience at The Views Golf Club. Pass Holders: • 30% off Pro Shop merchandise except sale items and golf balls • Every month some kind of perk is provided such as a dis counted meal or a free guest pass • Guests receive resident rates • 8-day advance tee-time (7 day for 9-hole pass in summer) • Credit card payment accepted for passes, green fees, punch cards and merchandise • No trail fees • Driving range privileges • Excellent Pro Shop customer service • The best course conditions possible Resident Golfers (Residents who do not purchase annual passes): • 15% (approximate) of rack rate green fees paid by the public • 15% of Pro Shop merchandise except sale items and golf balls • When requested, GolfNow rates when booking day of play without booking through GolfNow • Very reasonable individual lessons or golf schools • 6-day advance tee times • Credit cards accepted for all golf play and merchndise • No trail fees • An opportunity to purchase passes or punch cards at very com petitive rates • Excellent Pro Shop customer service • The best course conditions possible In addition to the value outlined above, every attempt is made to assure that our residents receive the vast majority of the premium tee times, and every attempt is made to treat our resident golfers with the highest regard. We hope that all the value that is in place along with our continual desire and effort to improve your golf experience will encourage you to play more golf on your golf course, The Views Golf Club at Oro Valley. On a final note, we truly want to hear from you. If there is anything that we can do to improve your golfing experience, please let us know. Every request and bit of input will be seriously considered.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle... The Modelers Club...Facts and Fantasy Our Motto “No Pointing – No Touching” by Paul Mercer

If you use the pool, the hot tub or any of the gym facilities, you pass by a large window that opens up on a view of a mountain, a railroad trestle and an array of railroad tracks. Those scenes are all built to HO scale in the room that was once home of the Ceramics Club. Fred Faust, Modelers Club president says “The Ceramics Club was here before us, and thanks to Katie Melcher’s assistance we moved to the space in 2014.” Other clubs contributed to the modelers move: computers were donated by the Computer Club and the Sewing Club donated and installed the skirt around the bottom of the train tables. We all are aware of the world-class facilities here at SCOV for golf, tennis, pickleball, swimming, bocce ball and nearby trails and paths for hiking and biking. One of our older clubs, the Modelers Club, doesn’t use any of those facilities but it does have a dedicated meeting room or clubhouse. It is an inviting and friendly room where you are welcome to stop in whenever a member is there, which is most of the time. Once there, enjoy some coffee and some chatting. There are many models to ex- Photo by Paul Mercer. amine so plan on spending some time there. The club hosts open houses three times a year: Christmas, New Years and Easter. These dates are timed to handle the large influx of our grandchildren who are here for the holidays, and are of interest to many visiting adults as well, attracting about 150 visitors. Models will be running if available. This year for the first time, because they have so many assembled models in the vault, visiting youngsters will be gifted with one at the conclusion of their visit.

Robin Coulter Assisant Manager rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 Staff is engaged in preserving, protecting and enhancing SCOV which is the mission of our Association. One of the ways this is accomplished is that during business hours, emergencies may be reported to staff. But what can you, as a resident, do when you notice something very wrong on Association property when the buildings are closed? There is a system set in place for you to report emergencies. A manager is on call and may be reached by dialing 520825-1161. Please note that this is for emergency events, not to report grievances or observed needs; this can be done during business hours. It’s to report Association related fire, water spillage, burglary and similar emergency-events. We are very engaged and concerned about responding quickly to these events and encourage you to call.

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

One of the first models built by the club is the U.S.S. Arizona. It was built to 1:200 scale in plastic and is painted in the genuine colors and style of the time by Fred Faust, Bob Rubino, Ron Sanford, Dave Sarthard and Hugh Madson. The group took four months to build it. In addition to railroads and ships, there is an WWII encampment, two warplanes of the same era, and an experimental rocket plane, the Bell X-1. Some larger model planes are flown on a regular basis by the members. They also have a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 for members to help take a very realistic flight from our mundane world when needed. President Fred Faust, pictured right with VP Bob Rubino and Bill Nagel. They are standing alongside a section of track under construction. What is shown as white in the photo under Bill’s hand will be finished as a rocky hillside with vegetation. The painting of the blue sky, including the beautiful puffy white clouds in the background was done by Carol Nagel with lots of help from the Open Studio artists of SCOV. Many club members built Nagelville, a track-side town that is perpetually upgraded. When you visit, be sure to note the model 1940s airliner hanging from the ceiling in front of the sky. It is precisely balanced and reacts to the most gentle air changes people bring to the room, introducing unexpected motion in the display. Remember when you want to go where only memories and dreams can take you, stop in at the Modelers Club, and be prepared to stay awhile. It is that kind of place.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 Clubs Clubs are an important part of our community. Please remember the following to keep the Association informed: Whenever new officers/ leaders take over please let Coco Sullivan, Facilities Coordinator, 917-8072 know, to update our records. It is important that the old officers/leaders pass on the handbook that is given out at each club presidents/leaders meeting in January of each year to the new leaders. If you are a new club officer and do not have a handbook you may obtain one from Coco at the Welcome Center. Clubs are autonomous but we do need the above-mentioned information from each club for our records. As I have stated “the purpose of clubs is to have fun. Yes there are some rules to follow, but never forget why the club was formed; that is for enjoyment.”

Cardio Benefits That You May Not Think About Try to think of your workouts not as a daily or weekly obligation, but rather as some quality alone time. The physical nature of exercise and the release of hormones serve as a stress reliever. But mentally, a long cardio workout session can be beneficial as well. It’s a little bit of time spent away from potential stressors. Mix up the cardio routine to keep things interesting and fresh. If the treadmill is your thing, get on a cross-trainer one day a week. Want to work different muscles? Try the total-body workout of a rower from time-totime. Different approaches to your cardio workouts can help ensure that they’re always fresh and something that you’re excited to do. Getting started with your workout is often the hardest part. Convince yourself to take that first step, and you’ll never miss a workout. Special Note From the AFC Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, for any questions or problems with the AFC.

AFC Advisory Chair Michael Takerian 520-256-3213 michaeltakerian@gmail.com First Wednesday, 11:30 AM, WC1 afc@suncityorovalley.com The Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Committee will reconvene our meetings in September. If you have any comments or suggestions that pertain to the Aquatic Fitness Center or the Desert Oasis Pool, email us

Architectural Review Janice Strassburg, 520-338-2568, janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 If you have questions about making any changes to the exterior of your home, be it construction or landscaping, it may be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the Development Standards. They cover most of the items that relate to change within the confines of your lot. If you feel they are restrictive, they are also what has kept our community looking cohesive for so many years. These documents also pertain to any major landscaping changes. They may seem like boring reading but they are pertinent to any changes you wish to make. Another good thing is what the ACT (Architectural Control Team) group will do for you. Should you anticipate selling in the near future, an inspection by this team can give you a heads up on any items that might cause a problem when the sale comes down to escrow. You can request an inspection through Katy Mosier, Community Services Coordinator.

Election The vote on approval of the rewritten Master Declaration and Bylaws will be concluded this month. Ballots will be counted on July 1 with results of the vote being sent out by email and posted on our doors that day. The results will be formally recorded in the minutes at the September board meeting.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Chair Claudia Case 279-8950 ccasescov@gmail.com Here are the directions for looking up the Vendor List on the website (formerly called Consumer Referral List): Go to www.scovaz.com >Members >Member Services >Consumer Referral Vendor List >Read More. A printed copy of the Vendor List is located at the Welcome Desk in the Activity Center during all Activity Center business hours. Vendors may call or email Claudia to inquire about applying to be on our Consumer Referral Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Chair Dick Brammell crbbrammell@gmail.com Third Monday, 1 PM, WC3 Our next meeting will be October 17.

Food and Beverage Chair Del Peterson 307-631-3114 October-May, First Tuesday, 9 AM, WC1 The 4th of July is our time to celebrate and be thankful we live in this wonderful country. At Noon on the 4th, a BBQ is planned at The Views Restaurant. The grill will be set up outside and there will be some beer specials in addition to other great offerings. Come and enjoy this great day. The salad menus have doubled, a perfect meal for the toasty weather. A pulled pork sandwich is being added to the menu. The big hit item is The Views new signature dessert Bread and Butter Pudding. Construction continues to move along on the new lounge and terrace. It will be wonderful when it is completed and something we can all be proud of for our community.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, July 2016

Friends of the Library Did you know? Our library doesn’t receive any funding for books, audios, videos, or supplies. All of these items are purchased through donations, grants and fund raising. Your membership in the Friends of the Library provides a good portion of that funding: $15 pp or $20/household. Membership runs January-December but you can join anytime. Pick up a form in the Library. Also look forward to our annual Books and Authors Luncheon March 10 and the biennial House Tour February 18. Thanks for your participation. See you in the Library.

General Manager Search Chair Dick Brammell 701-361-8573 To date, the General Manager Search Committee has reviewed, updated and approved the General Manager’s job description and employment agreement to be used in the search. We have completed the search schedule which is a guideline and will be flexible because of the number of qualified candidates that may apply. Schedule: • July-August: Receive applications and select candidates to be interviewed. Conduct initial interviews via Skype. • September-October: Final candidates to have separate onsite interviews, then have the Board select its choice for the job. Make offer to selected candidate.

Karen states, “I paint what I want the way I want to paint it. My media is watercolor but because I layer my paint, the end result often looks like an acrylic painting. I paint to be true to myself. That is what is most important to me as an artist and also as a human being. Often, I am driving along and a title pops into my head. Then a painting starts coalescing. It just happens. I feel fortunate that the creative process is a large part of my life.”

Loan Room - Community Assistance

Tipster Editorial

Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Tuesday and Thursday reservations and pickup 8-9 AM Meeting Third Thursday, 3 PM, WC1 The CAC (Community Assistance Committee) has been in existence since before 1992. While it is a SCOV Board of Directors-appointed committee, it does not, and never has, received any monetary support from the Association. The Association does provide us with room space and helps with transporting the aluminum cans. The CAC raises money three ways: By donations from those using the Loan Room, through the Annual Pancake Breakfast in January and the aluminum can collection program. All functions of the committee are staffed by volunteers from the community. Currently the funds accumulated by the CAC are being used to computerize the Loan Room services.

Co-Chairs Lou Phillippi 638-6957 lnphillippi@yahoo.com Del Salvaterra The committee is considering changing the order of clubs to look the same as the newly-revised website. We will be proposing changes that will make our communications consistent. You will hear more about this in the coming months. Next Tipster Editorial Committee meeting is Friday, July 15, 9 AM, WC1.

Marketing and Publicity Carolyn Corwin 701-306-1181 c.g.corwin@icloud.com Fourth Thursday, 3 PM, WC1 The next meeting will be in August.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 It’s That Time Again If it hasn’t already, our monsoon season will arrive soon in full force. Add some much-needed rain to our summer heat, and the growth of our foliage takes off. This is a surprise to residents new to this part of the country and an annual reminder to the rest of us that things really do grow here in the desert. Weeds will pop up in the cracks of concrete and where the sidewalk meets the street. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to get rid of those weeds and help keep our community looking nice, even in the middle of summer. Notice the roofs in your neighborhood, as strong winds can sometimes lift and move the tiles. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see roof damage. With so many of our residents away, it’s helpful to keep an eye out for each other. Keep the pride, not only in your property but those of your neighbors and friends as well.

Posse Chair Larry Clark 404-7664 2larryclark@gmail.com First Tuesday, 3 PM, Catalina Vista scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first) We need new members who are willing to go out and patrol our neighborhood. Just three times a year minimum. It’s a great way to give back to our community.

Properties Chair Ed Zwerling 631-741-9934 EZwerling@yahoo.com Third Thursday, 9 AM, WC1 Our meetings are open to the community and we encourage all residents to attend. Our goal is to continuously improve our facilities and reduce our operating costs. If you feel there are needs for physical improvements at any of our facilities or would like us to investigate energy-related cost savings, please stop by one of our meetings to discuss it.

Golf Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs

kgriggs@theviewsgolfclub.com 917-8053 Summer is here and this means that our tee times will begin earlier. Please adhere to the walking signs for your own safety and to be courteous to the golfers who are out there. Tee times start at 6:30 AM, therefore you need to have your morning walk completed by 6:30 AM. Also, remember that everyone must check in at the Pro Shop prior to playing golf. If the shop is closed, return the next morning and pay your appropriate fees. Just a friendly reminder that snakes are out and moving around on a regular basis. Be very careful and do not provoke them in any way. If you feel that a snake needs to be removed from the golf course or any other area, call us and we will send someone to take care of the situation. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water as our temperatures will be approaching triple digits. If you use our driving range, be aware that we close it at 3 PM on Thursday. This is done so we can clean pick and the maintenance crew can mow. The same dress code applies to the driving range as it does for the golf course. We continue to offer driving range cards for golfers who use our range quite often. Our fees are on our website at theviewsgolfclub.com or you can call the Pro Shop, 825-3110 or stop by for more information. If you have not been in our new Pro Shop, this is the time to check it out. We have a nice selection of hats, visors, shirts, shorts, etc., with more hats to arrive soon. Stop in and shop our clearance rack with many great bargains, say “Hello” to our friendly staff and get a great deal.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in southern Arizona. In regards to Golf Course Maintenance the start of monsoons is bitter sweet. The good news is the golf course will start to green up after the harsh dry weather of June because of the increased humidity combined with hot temperatures. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential to cause serious damage to holes located near washes. A couple years ago a storm generated a large amount of water north of SCOV, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were between the wash on #4 green and #5 fairway when water quickly filled the wash. Two golf carts tried to cross the wash and were buried in sand. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it took a couple hours for the water to recede and to get the golfers off the golf course safely.

July 2016, Sun City Oro Valley Tipster

8

Please remember, when these washes are running, they are very powerful. The wash on #5 can be a raging river. Don’t drive around the course and attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is either covered with water or sand. At a minimum, the golf cart will be stranded until the staff is able to rescue the cart. Be aware that during the monsoons it doesn’t matter if it is raining in SCOV or not for the washes to flow.

Golf Advisory Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 First Wednesday, 2 PM, WC3 No meetings until September. Have a great summer.

We meet every Wednesday, 9 AM, beginning on October 12. Our first lesson will be an eight-week study of chapters 1328 of the book of Acts. We will learn, just as the early church, how these lessons are relevant in today’s world. We also will learn about the application to our own lives. We suggest that you consider the many benefits of our Bible study. The more we learn about our Lord, the more completely we can love Him, worship Him and live for Him. We are more likely to be efficient, disciplined and in-depth through studying in a group setting (rather than studying alone). Working, sharing and praying together will result in fellowship and new friendships.

Second, try turning your camera sideways and taking a vertical picture. It works well with people photos and some scenery, like trees and tall buildings. Winning photos will be displayed in the Catalina Vista gallery through September. Our next meeting is September 28.

Pilates Mary Ayers 638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Monday, 3 PM, Thursday, 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio Summer is a great time to commit to a new exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Small summer classes offer you a great opportunity to learn. Even forty years after his death, the Joseph Pilates exercise system is in very high demand. Fortunately, SCOV offers these classes twice per week on Monday and Thursday. People ask, “Can the benefits, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm “Yes.” Additional benefits you will notice when taking the group mat classes, specifically designed for seniors, are better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. Our classes are taught by two experienced instructors, and the cost is only $8/class with annual club dues of $20 pp. Please join us, or just come by and watch.

Poets Corner Esther Berlot 818-6463 lberlot@q.com Monday, 10 AM-Noon, Desert Oasis Surely we all remember Shakespeare’s famous soliloquy wherein Hamlet deliberates the difficult question of whether “to be or not to be”. Poets Corner poet, Esther Berlot, uses a somewhat similar format in a poem wherein she asks difficult questions of herself that she purposely doesn’t answer, provoking her readers to consider how they might personally respond. The poem, appropriately titled Dilemma opens with several: “If I matter to myself/ and you matter to yourself,/ who’s to decide/ who matters more?/ If we both feel pain/ whose pain will take precedence?” Less philosophical but still worth pondering, she later asks: “Do I buy the cheap shirt made in China/ or the overpriced made in the USA?” Soon all registered voters will be faced with a rather significant question. Whom should we elect as our country’s next president? Political poetry, often relying on satire, may help us decide.

With all the new technology, the racquet can feel very light in your hand but still provide maximum power and control to give your game the competitive edge. Having the racquet restrung on a regular basis is also important. Look at your shoes. Are the soles worn down, or are the shoes uncomfortable? All the name brands are offering shoes with much more cushion, stability and support. This can be a great comfort for your hips and knees as well as your feet. Running shoes can be a good alternative to tennis shoes for cushion and support. Tennis Tip: Tennis is a sideways game; turn your shoulders to hit every shot.
