The Desert Oasis Project by Ted Hood The Desert Oasis Renovation (DOR) Committee started work on a renovation plan for Desert Oasis in October 2016. A plan and recommendation was presented to the SCOV community at a community forum on May 30, 2017. Two days later, a video of the forum was available to residents via SCOV YouTube, resulting in over 500 views on YouTube. Resident feedback was requested, received and incorporated in the final version of the plan. The Board approved the plan and funding at the June Board meeting. The experience gained in the planning and design of the DOR will be of great value as we begin the planning and design of the much larger Activity Center (AC) renovation project. This project is scheduled to start in January 2018, with an anticipated completion date in the fall of 2019. This project is challenging because it is a large, multi-use facility with a multiplicity of users vying for their share of space. Using a lessons learned approach from DOR, the AC Committee will try to bring the entire SCOV community into the planning process much earlier. The DOR project had a lot of input from the facility users, but little from the community at large until late in the design stage. Use of architectural and design professionals will be revised to provide more frequent updates to both the Board and residents and more current financial and project completion data. The YouTube presentation seemed to work and may be a way of enhancing resident participation. Hoping to see you at the AC Committee meetings; otherwise, you may see us on YouTube.

Make Your Dues a Priority When you sit down to pay your bills in July, do you consider your Association annual dues (also referred to as assessments) a low priority? If so, think again. According to the National Consumer Law Center’s (NCLC) Guide to Surviving Debt, assessments “should be considered a high priority.” In fact, NCLC considers community association assessments in the same category as mortgage payments and real estate taxes, a category ranked second only to feeding your family, according to the Guide’s “Sixteen Rules about Which Debts to Pay First.” Assessments pay for services like building maintenance, cleaning and utilities as well as insurance on the common area facilities. This provides wonderful amenities to our beautiful community and helps protect everyone. So when all services, utilities and insurance are passed along to you as a annual assessment, you’re actually getting a bargain. So, next time you get out your checkbook, remember to put your assessment near the top of that stack of bills and pay on time. Paying on time helps you avoid having your resident card turned off and the embarrassment of not being able to enter a building because you’ve become delinquent. You’ll be glad you did.

Assistant Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Website Features One of most used features of our website is the Member Services section. This is the section of our website to find just about anything you’re looking for such as the vendor list, community directory, how to rent your home and other items. Try it out for yourself, and see how convenient it is to use. Member Services – By going to Members/Member Services, you can have access to lots of information and resources provided to you by our Association and committees. You can find information for your home, guests, safety, health, catering and more. Take a look at this page. You will find it very useful. Directory – On the Member Services page is the community directory. One of the new features to this is that if you are accessing the community directory from your smart phone, it will dial from the numbers listed in the directory. Also, you can search this system for a name or a street, etc. Vendor List – This fabulous service, provided by the Consumer Referral Committee, provides those valuable vendors for air conditioning, plumbing, etc. This list can be searched by vendor type or name, etc. The items above are provided by our various committees and staff. However, the business of the committee such as minutes, agenda, reports, etc. can be found under Members/Committees. The services our committees provide can be found by going to Members/Member Services (you must first be logged in as a member). The site is updated multiple times a day. It is intended to be a valuable tool for you here in SCOV. Enjoy and use this new amenity.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 More improvements are taking place in SCOV. I wish I could give you a time line for the Desert Oasis but that is not available at this time. We will try to keep the pool open. There will be construction workers and I am sure dust in the pool area. You will be able to use your membership card/fob on the outside gate to enter the pool area. More showers are just part of the demands being met for residents. Don’t miss our afternoon movie Wednesday, July 28. See Coming Events on page 10 for details. Tickets are free, but you must have a ticket to attend so that we know how many chairs to set up.

We are very appreciative of their support. For your summer reading in July you will be able to check out the latest books by Brad Thor and Jillian Cantor, a local author who spoke a year ago in SCOV. Nonfiction bestseller Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil DeGrasse Tyson will help round out your summer reads. I personally can’t wait to see The Zookeeper’s Wife, available on video beginning July 5. We add over 100 new items each month. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Why should I get the LF Connect App? LF Connect lets you control your own workout experience. For example, if you want to do a workout that is not programmed on the machines, simply create, share and personalize your own, manipulating time, speed and intervals. You can use LF Connect to create your workout at home or even on the way to the gym. When you arrive, your workout is ready to go. The LF Connect App also allows you to log your strength session as well as record any exercises you do outside the gym. Use the app to record your run or bike ride. Each resistance machine will have a QR barcode to scan, then simply record your sets, reps and weight, keeping your workout logs all in one place. Special Note From the AFC: Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, July 11, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, July 12, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

This will be a safe place to discuss the commonality of people who are having biopsies, waiting for test results and fearing the unknown; undergoing the process of radiation, chemo, etc.; needing caregivers and support and bemoaning the frustrating doctor’s office response level and interference with schedules. In this group, members can discuss how these issues affect them personally and their lives in general. The group will not discuss diagnostic issues or treatment options, but will focus only on personal human responses to possible, pre- and post- cancer. It would be a good step in keeping neighborly relations. The list of updated items that came with the annual mailing was a great way to know the latest changes. Not much in life stays status quo. The plant list is ever-evolving as ARC receives requests from landscape professionals who recommend new trees and plants. After research into the species and its growth pattern, they are quite often added to the list. The trees they have been suggesting are cleaner, not quite as tall and water efficient. Being informed is the secret to avoiding future hassle. Please note: The cost of each ARC submittal is increased to $25 effective July 1, 2017, as approved in the 2017-2018 budget.

The wait staff continues to receive five out of five ratings, according to comment cards, but we need to bring meals out of the kitchen more in line with customer expectations. The root cause is the inadequacy of our kitchen. We are serving an average of 750 meals during the high season, out of the original 500-meal cafĂŠ kitchen. Phase 1 of an improvement plan was approved for implementation this summer by the Board. This includes adding fryers, more cooking burners, expanded refrigeration, a new dishwasher, space rearrangements and changes to the grease trap, which needs to be extended toward the street. All costs are covered by existing asset reserves and the capital fund. As we continue to make The Views an amenity we all can be proud of, please support your restaurant during the summer months.

Friends of the Library Have you heard about the librarians on horseback in the 1930’s? Go to the website archiveproject.com/the-horseback-librarians-of-eastern-kentucky-10-photos?ref=share and you’ll learn how important these librarians were in making sure that the people living in the mountains were able to have books, magazines, newspapers, etc. to read. What would those librarians think to see us driving our golf carts to the library? SCOV is so fortunate to have the Library with its many books and movies. Remember that the Library operates with donations from the community. Don’t forget the Library when planning your estate or year-end donations. SCOV Library appreciates all of the support.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Again, It’s That Time If it hasn’t already, our monsoon season will soon arrive in full force. Add some much-needed rain to our summer heat, and the growth of our foliage takes off. This is a surprise to residents new to this part of the country and an annual reminder to the rest of us that things really do grow here in the desert. Weeds will pop up in the cracks of concrete and where the sidewalk meets the street. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to get rid of those weeds and help keep our community looking nice, even in the middle of summer. Notice roofs in your neighborhood, as strong winds can sometimes lift and move the tiles. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see roof damage. With so many of our residents away, it’s helpful to keep an eye out for each other. Keep the pride, not only in your property but those of your neighbors and friends as well.

Posse Chair Larry Clark 520-404-7664 2larryclark@gmail.com First Tue., 3 PM, Catalina Vista scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first) There will be no Posse Committee meetings in July and August. There are still Posse patrols every night in our neighborhoods. Since we are shorthanded during the summer months, please volunteer. We need you. Come in from the heat of summer to enjoy the coolness of the Gift Shop while shopping for special items from our consignors. Featured artists for July are Georgia Froman (above, left) and Heidi Kannengieser (above, right). Georgia tells us, “When I was very young, my grandmother taught me to knit, crochet, sew and paint. This generated a lifelong interest in crafts. I have enjoyed beading for years, making necklaces, bracelets and earrings.” After learning wire wrapping, she added a new dimension to her designs full of beads and gems purchased at the Gem Show. Heidi combines her silversmith talents with specially-selected stones and beads to fashion her jewelry. Following a long process of cutting slabs from large hunks of stones, she painstakingly smooths stones on progressively finer sanding grits to release the inner beauty of the stone to be set. She then creates a setting unique to each finished stone.

Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs kgriggs@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8053 Summer is here and this will mean that our tee times will begin earlier. Please adhere to the walking signs just the same for your own safety and to be courteous to the golfers that are out there. Tee times are starting at 6:30 AM, therefore you will need to have your morning walk completed by 6:30 AM on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Remember that everyone must check in to the Pro Shop prior to playing golf. If the shop is closed, please return the next morning and pay your appropriate fees. Just a friendly reminder that snakes are now out and moving around on a regular basis. Please be very careful and do not provoke them in any way. If you feel that a snake needs to be removed from the golf course or any other area, call us and we will send someone to take care of the situation. Remember to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water as our temperatures will be approaching triple digits. If you use our Driving Range, be aware that we close the Driving Range at 3 PM on Wednesday only now. This is done so we can clean pick and the maintenance crew can mow. The same dress code applies to the driving range as it does for the golf course. We are continuing to offer Driving Range cards for golfers who use our range quite often. Our fees are on our website, theviewsgolfclub.com, or you can call the Pro Shop at 520-825-3110 or stop by for more information. If you have not been in our new Pro Shop, this is the time to check it out. We have a nice selection of hats, visors, shirts, shorts etc., with more hats to arrive soon. Stop in and shop our clearance rack with many great bargains, say hello to our friendly staff and get a great deal.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in southern Arizona. In regards to Golf Course Maintenance, the start of monsoons is bitter sweet. The good news is the golf course will start to green up after the harsh dry weather of June because of the increased humidity combined with hot temperatures. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. Several years ago a thunderstorm generated a large amount of water north of SCOV, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were playing holes number 4 and 5 when the wash began to fill. Two golf carts then tried to cross the wash and got stuck. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it took a couple hours for the water to recede and get the carts off the golf course safely. Please remember, when these washes are running, they are as powerful as raging rivers. Don’t drive around the course and attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is either covered with water or sand. At the minimum the golf cart will be stranded until the staff is able to rescue it. Be aware that during the monsoons, the washes can flow

Food & Beverage Director - Aalt Brouwer abrouwer@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8074

Greetings from the Views Restaurant. With the slower season upon us, we are excited to offer some great promotions and fun entertainment for our loyal residents. As some of you may have noticed, we are now offering Mildred’s breakfast from 7-9 AM for $5 Monday through Friday. It is a great value for you and your family and friends. In addition to that, starting in July we will be having a Classic Dinner and Movie night where we will be playing a classic movie and pairing it with a wonderful special. See details of the movie and special in our Views calendar. While we are slowing down, our efforts have been on creating procedures to increase consistency in food and service. I have created a schedule for training monthly with vendors and am working closely with Restaurant Manager, Errick Owens, to create training during our remodel closure when we get there. In addition, as we learn more about our residents, we develop insight on patrons’ desires. We will be revamping our menu to prepare for the coming busy season. I would like to thank all of you who have filled out comment cards to give insight on what you are looking for in your community restaurant. We do utilize these comments when changing our offerings. Thank you again for being loyal to The Views, and we look forward to an exciting month.

Donations may be made throughout the year in the form of cash, stocks, or gifts-inkind to SCV Foundation at 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd., Oro Valley, AZ 85755. A recent gift of a golf cart to the Foundation provided a tax write-off for the donor and a refurbished cart for the purchaser. This was a three-way win for the donor, the purchaser and the Foundation. A fourth win is for the organizations that receive these funds from the Foundation. Many are Sun City clubs that make and collect items to distribute to organizations helping the needy throughout the area. Our thanks go out to all that contribute to the Foundation.

The outpour of love and support Sun City has shown our family has been amazing. It has come from the Men’s League, Ladies League, Pro Shop and Restaurant. We have had so many cards from people that live in Sun City that are not golfers. We have been blessed to be involved in your Community. Thank you all, Sue Lafontaine and Family Many thanks to the Foundation for their recent generous grant to the Library. Precept Women’s Bible Study

Linda Miller, 425-890-9967 Corinne Diven, 520-971-9430 Oct.-Apr., Wed., 9 AM, WC3

We always welcome new members, even if you cannot attend the entire session. Our fall session begins Wednesday, October 18, with the last half of the book of Jeremiah. Our facilitator for this study is Dorothy Smith who will lead us through a review of our weekly homework. We then view a DVD lesson by David Arthur. Our study of God’s Word to His people (through the prophets) helps us to observe the Scriptures; we will learn about God’s message to a rebellious Judah as Babylonian exile loomed. Join us for a blessed experience with stimulating discussions.

SCOV Book Club Co-Pres. Joyce Franke 520-818-7955 Co-Pres. Cynthia Kartman 414-732-3063 Glenda Tonkin 520-207-4802 gt99673@gmail.com First Mon., 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge Note: The July meeting will be at Joyce Franke’s home. Directions will be sent in advance of the meeting. At our July meeting we will discuss The Tumbling Turner Sisters by Fay Juliette. Set in the turbulent times following the end of World War I, this historical novel tells the story of four sisters and their irrepressible mother hitting the road to make a living in Vaudeville after their father is left injured and unable to work. Life on the road is a heady mix of excitement, shady characters, hard work, seedy theaters and hotels as they struggle to learn the ropes of making a living as performers. August 2017: The Quartet by Joseph Ellis. Pulitzer Prizewinning historian Joseph Ellis takes up the story of what happened after the end of the American Revolution by following the roles played by George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison in the political events of 1783 to 1789.

Poets Corner James Pavlakis 520-612-7328 pavlakisj@yahoo.com.mx Mon., 10 AM-Noon, Desert Oasis/Saguaro Poet Sandra Simonds expresses her concern about climate change in “A new obsession. How to get out” that begins with her dream of “…my car ending up in a body of water.” Certainly in Tucson, we have all heard that even six inches of water can sweep your car away. But the poem goes on to say: “I don’t like water…It scares me. I know all life was born of water…I know that water is beautiful and mysterious. But why does it sweep people away? I want to push down the rising seas. I look at a map of cities that will be underwater by 2100, 2200—Jacksonville, New Orleans, Amsterdam. I want to push them down with my bare hands.” Protest poems are often an emotional plea for help in resolving a problem that the poet believes is important. Poems that reveal deep feelings are always welcome at the Poets Corner, as well as the poets who write them.

Summer is a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Small summer classes offer you a great opportunity to learn. Even 40 years after his death, the Joseph Pilates exercise system is in high demand. Fortunately, Sun City offers these classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. People ask, “Can the benefits, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm, “Yes.” Additional benefits you will notice when taking the group mat classes, are better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. Classes are specifically designed for seniors and are taught by two experienced instructors. The cost is only $8/class with annual club dues of $20 pp. Please join us or just come by and watch.
