SCOV Sidewalks by Lou Gard On May 5, the Town of Oro Valley (TOV) Town Council approved the repeal of TOV Code, Chapter 7, Article 5. Prior to this action each homeowner was responsible for the repair and maintenance of sidewalks adjacent to their property, even though the sidewalk was within the street right of way, which the TOV controlled. The TOV is now responsible for the inspection and repair of sidewalks in the street right of way. This is good news for our homeowners. Now the homeowner does not bear the responsibility and cost of any repair if there is a raised section of sidewalk. A sidewalk will need to be repaired if there is a one half inch or more rise between two squares of the sidewalk, or two squares have heaved and both have risen up causing an uneven walkway. Either may cause a trip hazard to pedestrians. SCOV has already marked some of the sidewalks in our community that need repair. Two of the most common reasons for an uneven sidewalk are a root pushes one of the sidewalk squares up or during construction the compaction was not adequate, causing squares to sink below adjacent squares. If you feel you have an issue with a sidewalk that has risen or sunken the onehalf inch or more, contact Jessica Hynd jhynd@orovalleyaz. gov and report the issue.

Emergency Information Each week, one of the department managers is assigned to answer the emergency SCOV telephone line. That person is known as the MOD or Manager on Duty by the staff. It rotates from week to week, and each manager is on duty for one week, about once every nine weeks. Towards the end of May, I took my regular turn at the rotation. One night during the week, I received a call on the emergency line. I was told by the resident, who made the call, that her neighbor’s light was flashing on and off. Normally this indicates some kind of an emergency, and the concerned neighbor was alerting me to the blinking light. I checked the phone directory and called the number listed for the residence. The lady that answered informed me that she had moved out of the home a few months before. I immediately notified the Oro Valley Police Department who dispatched an officer to the scene. Within a few minutes, the officer called me. He was at the residence and found no one would answer the door. No doors or windows were open and he could get no response from inside when he knocked on the windows. The officer and I were concerned that a resident may be in distress inside and unable to respond. I met the officer at the Welcome Center where I searched our emergency contact numbers only to find out we had record of emergency contacts for both neighbors on each side of the home, but the owner had not given us information to contact them in case of emergency for the home involved. The assistant general manager came down and was able to retrieve the owner’s information from the computer files. The police officer called the owner only to find out the owner was not living in the home and a painter must have flipped the switch not realizing what it was for. Had this been an actual emergency situation, not having the emergency contact information could have cost precious time. Assessing this situation took an additional 10 minutes that could have been crucial to a resident’s welfare. Please submit your emergency contact information to the staff at the Welcome Center right away [for all homes you own in SCOV] and help us to help you. Not receiving the weekly email newsletter

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 After Hours Association Related Emergencies Water is running from an Association building; what do you do? There are times when the residents may spot something that needs to be brought to management’s attention immediately, and the Administration Office is closed. What is the process? On page 2 of every Tipster, bottom right corner, the procedure is listed. It states: “If you encounter something in the common areas or golf course needing immediate attention (e.g., broken irrigation) and the Administration Office is closed, please report the issue to a building monitor. However, if a situation like this occurs after all the buildings are closed and no monitor is available, please contact the emergency line.” Tell a monitor first. If none is available, call 825-1161. There is a manager on duty that has access to vendors to address emergencies. Please remember this is for Association-related emergencies only. If your concern is a personal emergency, call 911 or the appropriate vendor (plumber, etc.). If it’s not an emergency, please call back during business hours.
Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Fun at Home July brings us our usual great free 4th of July celebration from the Sun City Singers, along with an ice cream treat. Also this year there are other events in the community. The Views Restaurant and Pro Shop will be running special events. With all this going on you won’t have to leave SCOV for a fun day. More information will be on the bulletin boards about these events. It is also time to remind you that many of our emergency calls for residents during the summer are caused by people being dehydrated. Please remember to take a drink of water about every half hour. As the saying goes, “Sometimes if you are thirsty, it’s too late.” Have a safe summer.
Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours Mon.-Fri., 9-11 AM, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Communicating with Your Neighbor At times, residents come in with complaints about the behavior of their neighbors. Sometimes these concerns are legitimate, and sometimes, they result from misunderstanding or misinformation. The key to a clearer understanding of a situation is communication. Speaking with your neighbors can have benefits. Set the stage for open interchange of thoughts and opinions with positive actions. Respect, kindness, courtesy, support and flexibility are taught to most of us from the time we are knee-high. For example, if a situation presents itself, offer to do a favor for a neighbor. If you see someone struggling to carry a heavy object, suggest that you help. If you notice an opportunity to compliment them or give support, take advantage of it and offer a kind word. If you need help, don’t feel shy about asking for assistance as well. Be proactive. Care for your own yard and remove debris that can blow into a neighbor’s yard. This is especially important during your absence. Ask yourself: “Is it courteous to let weeds and fallen plant/tree debris from monsoon activity
Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, July 2019
collect in my yard? Should I wait until just before I return to have the landscaper clean it up?” Mature trees and shrubs need to be pruned back regularly. If you can’t do the yard maintenance on your own, consider hiring a professional landscaper to do the job. Keep pets quiet and under control. Always pick up your dog’s waste in your own yard. When you are out walking your dog, take a bag for dog waste. Neighbors who look out for each other are powerful in keeping our community safe and strong.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Mental Health Benefits of Exercise and Fitness Exercise improves your sleep. Poor sleep is not an automatic consequence of aging, and quality sleep is important for your overall health. It often improves sleep, helping you fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply. Exercise boosts mood and self-confidence. Endorphins produced by exercise can actually help you feel better and reduce feelings of sadness or depression. Being active and feeling strong naturally helps you feel more self-confident and sure of yourself. Exercise is good for the brain. It benefits regular brain functions and can help keep the brain active, which can prevent memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia. Exercise may even help slow the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, July 9, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, July 10, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

The AFC Committee meetings will reconvene October 2. A reminder that it is important to stay hydrated throughout the day. Water is still considered the overall best hydrator. Keep your water nearby. Possible signs of dehydration: thirst, kidney stones, cramping, rapid but weak pulse or passing out, to mention just a few. Being properly hydrated is also very important for certain medications to work. When using the AFC pool, avoid laying on and going over the lane guide ropes. Please go under. The committee always values and invites your input. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

ARC will not meet on July 23 and August 27 so that committee members can work on updating SCOV Development Standards. Some SCOV homeowners display the United States flag in their yards on holidays such as July 4th, Independence Day. Others display the U.S. flag year-round. All homeowners must follow the U.S. Federal Flag Code found at www.usa.gov/flag and SCOV Development Standards 2.9, Flag Poles. Flag poles may be installed in the front or rear area of the home. The U.S. flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. Illumination, including solar lighting mounted on the flag pole, or noise from cables clanging against the pole during windy days, shall not be a nuisance to neighbors. The ARC must approve a homeowner’s plan to install a flag pole prior to installation.

The paper directory will go to press soon. Check both the online directory and the paper directory to ensure your listing is correct. All changes for the paper directory must be submitted no later than Friday, August 2. To update your information, complete the online form “To change your directory listing,” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. Is your deceased partner still listed? Many people like to keep their loved one’s name in the directory for safety or for sentiment, so deceased spouses are removed only when the surviving spouse requests it. Only you can decide if it’s time to update your listing. Are you a new resident or have you moved within SCOV? New owners are unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. Monsoon time! It must be book and movie time. Read the book then watch the movie–or visa versa. Read the book Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, then watch the movie. Or watch the movie The Children Act then read the book by Ian McEwan. Perhaps you like thrills and adventure: try the book The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz then see the movie made from the book. Then there’s the documentary, H Is for Hawk. We have both the DVD and the book by Helen MacDonald. We have all of these right here in our own library. In case you didn’t know, all of the funds used to purchase books, videos and audio books come from donated monies: membership in Friends of the Library, participation in Friends events like the Home Tour, individual donations of books and/or money, purchase of books and videos (always on sale in the library) and grants from community organizations like SCOV’s Institute of Learning in Retirement. Pat yourselves on the back, residents, you have created and keep supporting another awesome amenity in SCOV. Thank you and enjoy reading and watching.

Welcome to our new consignor, Melanie Stinson, an accomplished potter. “Influenced by my artist mother, I started painting around five years old. Attending college as an art major, I discovered clay. From the moment I sat at one of the wheels, I knew I was hooked. After college, I purchased a wheel and kiln and started a studio in my home. My ware sold at art fairs in the 70s and 80s and by commission. Then I took a 20-year hiatus, but knew that when I retired I wanted to pursue clay again. Luckily, we found Sun City and moved here in 2018. Pot- Melanie Stinson tery is my passion and therapy.” SCOV residents are invited to participate in the Arts and Crafts Festival 2019 to be held Saturday, November 16. Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Yes, But When? Soon our monsoon season should arrive in full force, but with the strange weather we have had so far this year, who knows when? Add some much-needed rain to our summer heat, and the growth of our foliage takes off. This is a surprise to residents new to this part of the country and an annual reminder to the rest of us that things really do grow here

in the desert. Weeds will pop up in the cracks of concrete and where the sidewalk meets the street. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to get rid of those weeds and help keep our community looking nice, even in the middle of summer. Strong winds come with the monsoon and can cause damage. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see roof damage or branches down from trees. With so many of our residents away, let’s keep an eye out for each other. Please take pride not only in your property, but also those of your neighbors and friends.
Posse Chair Linda Simon 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis, no meetings in Jul., Aug. www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)
The Posse is made up of amazing volunteers like Florence Duckett. When asked why she joined and continues to serve, Florence said she and her best friend decided to join together many years ago. Unfortunately, the friend eventually moved out of the area, but Florence was hooked. She stayed a member and says she continues to do so “because it keeps her connected to her community and gives her something to do.” She takes pride in knowing she’s helping keep our community a safer place for all of us. Florence has been on the Posse for 20 years. She has been on the Posse board the entire time since joining, and is one of the Squad B co-leaders. Join Florence and our other wonderful volunteers in making a difference. Six hours a year (two 3-hour patrols) is all the commitment we ask. You are wanted.
The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like the solar systems. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, July 18.

Many committees and task forces in SCOV, as well as the Board of Directors, take the summer off. Even though half of our committee members will be absent, those remaining will be working in conjunction with the ARC on proposed revisions to the Development Standards, which are needed to fully implement the process authorized by residents on the March ballot regarding views. Proposed changes to the process will be developed by using previously submitted ARC submittals for improvements to develop the process for the upcoming implementation and notification letters. Revision of the process is needed to ensure standardization and fairness of the results. The next full task force meeting will be in September, date and site to be determined and communicated on the SCOV website calendar. Have a nice summer.
Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1
The solar systems installed at various SCOV buildings continue to produce electricity thereby reducing the Association’s utility costs and helping reduce our community’s carbon footprint. The eight systems with a total capacity of 426 kilowatts are located throughout the common area parking lots and roofs. Solar provides about 60% of the electrical needs at SCOV owned facilities. The systems were installed without cost to SCOV and provide a net savings to the Association when compared with purchasing power from TEP. They have web-based monitoring that allows nearly real-time viewing of each system’s power output, energy generation, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions avoided as well as summary reports of daily and monthly performance. Residents can access the data on the SCOV website at www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/solar-stats/.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in Southern Arizona. For golf course maintenance, the start of monsoons is bittersweet. The good news is the golf course will start to green up after the harsh dry weather of June, due to the increased humidity combined with hot temperatures. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. Several years ago a thunderstorm generated a large amount of water north of SCOV, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were playing holes number 4 and 5 when the wash began to fill. Two golf carts then tried to cross the wash and got stuck. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it took a couple hours for the water to recede and get the carts off the golf course safely. Please remember, when these washes are running they are as powerful as raging rivers. Don’t drive around the course or attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is either covered with water or sand. The golf cart may be stranded until the staff is able to rescue it. Be aware that during the monsoons the washes can flow whether it is raining nearby or in the distance since we are at the bottom of the hill.
Golf Advisory Chair Beth Allen 520-639-8845 Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3
The Golf Advisory Committee is in recess for the summer months until Wednesday, September 4. For those of you playing golf during our very warm summer season, remember to keep well hydrated. If you are parking your golf cart along the paved path between the pickleball courts to Silverton Road and especially behind the Activity Center, the wheels on your golf cart cannot be on the paved path. Do not park your cart on the large stones along the side of the path or in the shrubs. You may park your cart on the smaller stone ground cover only. Please check to see where your tires are parked before you leave your cart and move it if necessary. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the golf course, inform your league representative who will bring the issue to the advisory committee for review. You are also welcome to contact Beth Allen. The summer months continue to be an extremely busy time for our superintendent, Mike Kropf, and his crew. As they are working diligently on maintaining and improving our course, be patient and show respect for the work they are doing.

June has been a productive month with completion of the resurfacing of the walkways, patio and terrace for your safety. We rolled out our new summer menu. We trained, cleaned and trained some more. Preparation is underway for upcoming Independence Day festivities. It is imperative to take time to refocus our efforts and get the restaurant looking immaculate again, as the busy season takes its toll every year. We appreciate your support during our annual closure, so staff can be trained to serve you better. Our employee profile this month is on Samantha Kohn. A business management major at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, golfing, playing tennis and reading. Her favorite books are mystery/thrillers, however she enjoys reading all genres. She’s originally from Michigan and moved to Arizona to be closer to her grandparents, as well as for an internship opportunity at our restaurant. Her greatest ambition in life is to be a lion tamer by day and ninja by night. We hope you will stop by to experience our new menu and we welcome your feedback.

The Astronomy Club meetings and popular speaker series are suspended for the summer, but there are some interesting things to do in the interim. The U of A Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium is a must-see. Located in the center of the U of A campus, the laser show and newly remodeled center offers a spectacular presentation. Information can be found at www.flandrau.org. Also, on the U of A campus (beneath the football stadium) is the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab. On May 16, our speaker, Daewook Kim, gave a really interesting presentation on how he grinds and polishes the largest astronomy mirrors in the world. Reservations for the tour can be made at: mirrorlab@arizona.com. The illustration shows the days it takes for planets to rotate around the sun. The earth circles the sun in 365 days plus a slight adjustment on “leap years.” Mercury, however, only takes 88 days, while far out Neptune takes 165 years. The Martian year is 687 days with each day 24 hours and 37 minutes long. Our our solar system has very diverse planet sizes and paths around the sun.

The Great Books Club provides an opportunity to engage in thoughtful and lively discussions on a wide range of topics. The anthologies published by The Great Books Foundation contain short selections from classic works of nonfiction, fiction and poetry. These readings provide the stimulus for our discussions of the great ideas contained in great literature. Our current book is Great Conversations 1, available from the Foundation or other online sources. We will reconvene October 2 to discuss a selection from Alexis de Toqueville’s Democracy in America. All SCOV residents are welcome to join us.

In July we will discuss Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn. With its 1830s setting, featuring a strong but endangered female protagonist, this classic novel has all the elements of foreboding, romance and murder for which du Maurier is rightly famous. Our August selection is Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. In this Pulitzer Prize winning book, Grann relates the shocking story of how oil-wealthy Osage Indians in 1920s Oklahoma were systematically murdered, sometimes by their own family members, to gain control of their wealth.

The loss of a loved one is a profound experience. Poets Corner member Harvey Gardner expresses his personal response in “Counting Breaths” by carefully building suspense and taking the reader on a journey that concludes with an emotional wallop. “This morning, my eyes so dry, I embraced / my face with a steaming washcloth/counting five…slow…wide-eyed breaths. Sunbathing at noon, my nostrils objected/to desert dust blown by Tucson winds. / I quit after seventeen cautious breaths. At two, the too cool mustard footpath needed / hotter water. The old…slow…electric kettle / finally spewed steam on my thirty-third breath. At summer camp my older brother Norman / would wow us at the pool by swimming six / underwater laps after taking one deep breath. Thirty-two months ago he took his last / breath. When my eye hugs his photo on / my desk I tread water and forget to breathe.”

The 30-plus attendees at our June meeting proved that not everyone leaves SCOV during the summer. Thanks to their efforts approximately 1,300 informational postcards about our club were addressed to Democrats and Independents living in SCOV. These will be delivered to residences in October. Dr. Felipe Perez was in attendance and introduced as the 2020 Legislative District 11 Democratic candidate for State Representative. At our July meeting we will discuss the results of the first Democratic presidential debates. The refreshments will be cool and the conversations impassioned. With so many residents gone during the summer our local food banks really are stretched thin. Please bring nonperishable food items to the July meeting for IMPACT of Southern Arizona. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Stay hydrated and safe during the monsoons and the triple digit temperatures.

The official dates for the monsoon season are June 15 through September 30. This year, with the cooler temperatures we had in May experts predict that the rains might start a bit later. The term monsoon refers to the seasonal shift in winds delivering warm, moist air from tropical seas. Sonoran desert plants have evolved to take full advantage of the monsoons. Enjoy the spectacular lightening show the monsoon brings from a safe place, and heed flash-flood warnings. Shari’s tip of the month: fill hummingbird feeders with 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar, no need to boil, just stir until sugar is dissolved. Hummingbirds, one of many pollinators of our gardens, are here. Look for Broad-billed hummingbirds (pictured at left) at your feeders. Save the date for our Garden Walk April 4, 2020. Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
SCOV offers Joseph Pilates mat classes here twice per week, Mondays and Thursdays. Summer is here and classes are smaller and more personal. Stretching exercises are done first to warm up and then the mat routine is performed, with modified moves for those of us with limitations. People ask if the benefits of Pilates, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body’s core (your abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility. The answer is a firm yes. The benefits of these classes cannot be beat, and don’t forget about improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and well being. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary with any questions.

Many medical professionals now recommend tai chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. In our classes we enjoy learning the tai chi form. We also increase flexibility, strength and learn to reduce stress. Our instructors Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich teach us how to apply tai chi principles to our daily lives. New classes will begin in fall.

Vistoso Cyclists boasts membership of nearly 200 riders. We ride year-round to preplanned destinations in Tucson and surrounding areas, using both city streets and dedicated bike paths. Occasionally away rides start from a distant location. Weekly mountain bike options take a few of us to the beautiful Tortolita rangelands, containing some of the highest-rated single track bike trails in the nation. Our group ride options are from 25-50 miles, and we always make time for a coffee stop midway. Those who ride with the Women on Wheels group have their own agenda providing routes of 12-30 miles. We sponsor social events, participate in Wheels for Kids charity and are involved with fundraising for the Interfaith Community Food Bank, raising over $43,000 last year. If you are a resident and love to ride a bike, check out our website above.

Pickleball Pres. Jeff Rusch jffrusch@yahoo.com VP Membership Dave Burnham dburnhampton@gmail.com Sun.-Sat., 8 AM-9 PM www.scovpb.org “Pickleball” is really a misnomer for this popular relatively new game. It should probably be named “peopleball” because the game rejuvenates its players and makes you like people again. Why wouldn’t you like people who are boisterous, happy, exuberant, laughing, shouting and just having a good time? Other sports say that pickleball is too noisy, but it is the people playing and interacting, not the ball on paddles that makes it so. Our equipment is economical and light weight making it easy on the arms and hands. Great exercise and fellowship Gold medals for Bob and Michael for a simple game too. Summer is here, so we start at 6:30 AM or earlier. There are times scheduled for nighttime play as well. We still offer free lessons and loaner paddles. Join our club for only $10 pp which gives you free lessons and balls on courts as well as practice equipment, additional training and socials.
