Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors debra.arrett@yahoo.com What’s Going on at the Views Restaurant by Debra Arrett Our new Views Restaurant opened less than a year ago. It is an amenity we can all be proud of with the eye-catching decor, gorgeous views and new dining and drinking areas both indoors and out. It is amazing how the business has grown in that short time and been enjoyed by more of our residents. There have been operation challenges that have greatly improved since Food and Beverage Manager Aalt Brouwer joined us in November. The average rating from the comment cards last month was 4.3 out of a possible 5. Business has grown well beyond our wildest expectations. In fact, revenues in April 2016 compared to April 2017 grew 38% from $84,000 to $116,000 and we have been profitable three out of the last six months. The renovation and expansion in 2016 did not include any kitchen improvements. I believe that’s a good thing. If changes were made last year, the expectation for our growth would not have been anticipated. Continuing challenges are due to kitchen limitations. Inefficiencies in the kitchen result in service delays through no fault of the servers. In the past year, we have outgrown our kitchen that now needs additional equipment and space, a more efficient layout and added dry and refrigerated storage space. Because of the badly needed additional storage, we have run out of food items during the day and we pay a premium for daily deliveries from our distributor. With less frequent deliveries, we will save around $12,000/year. When this article went to print, I expected some renovation would be done this summer including moving the grease trap as required by Pima County, relocating the dishwashing station with new equipment, replacing fryers and some burners and relocate and install the cold storage units as called for in the total renovation. With the fryers and added cold storage, you will see sweet potato fries back on the menu in the fall. The rest of the kitchen renovation to be completed next summer would include added dry storage, an improved layout and prep area, equipment and façade changes.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 Governing by Representation Community associations are a representative form of government founded on the principle of elected individuals representing the people. Much of our country is based on the principles of representative democracy. It starts with organizations like community associations and progresses through our school boards, city governments, county governments, state governments, all the way to the federal government. We vote for a person, or persons, who will act on our behalf. Some might advocate that a board should not take action without a vote of the members to find out what the people want. That would be counter-productive. If association members were to vote on every issue before a decision was made, there would be no need for a board, but simply someone to send out ballots and tally results. However, boards find out what their constituents want in other ways. Our SCOV Board makes time to hear from residents at each Board meeting. It’s up to you to attend meetings, voice your opinions and participate in the exchange of ideas with the Board. I also encourage your involvement and participation. Perhaps you would consider joining a committee. We want your input, ideas, thoughts and opinions. When the season for community association annual meetings and annual board elections approaches, consider carefully which candidates you select, including yourself. Consider running for the Board to help shape the future of your community.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 Summer is here, and I wanted to remind you about ways to keep cool and still get in some exercise. Our gym is a great place to work out. You can also go to Lonnie’s open walks inside the AFC studios on Mondays and Fridays from 1-2 PM. We also have many exercise classes in the AFC studios and the pool. Don’t slow down just because it is hot outside. Always remember to drink more water when being active. If you are thirsty, it’s too late. You should sip on water at least every half hour. We are taking suggestions for our outdoor movie in September. So far, La La Land has been suggested the most. If you have an idea, email me.

Of that total, 1,054 were purchased, and the other 584 items were donated by residents. Purchase decisions are based on the likes and dislikes of our patrons, supported by circulation data, while staying within the budget. All purchases are made using donations: money raised by Friends of the Library and grants from groups such as the ILR and the Vistoso Foundation. Hundreds of items are donated monthly. Volunteers, Christine Sullivan and Carolyn Darby, review each item and consider the condition, year of publication and popularity of that title and author to help decide whether or not we should put it on our shelves. The majority of donated items are sold to raise money or passed on to the Oro Valley Public Library, the VA Hospital or a women’s prison. Please look at our donation criteria at suncityorovalley.com/learn/amenities-facilities/library/donations/, and keep those donations coming in. New this month, is Into the Water by Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train, and the latest from Lee Child. Stop by the Library or visit our online catalog to put them on reserve.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 Walking Posture If you are hunching your shoulders and looking down while walking, you are reinforcing bad walking posture habits. Good walking posture is with the head up and eyes forward. This bad posture can lead to low back pain, neck and shoulder pain and doesn’t allow you to take full, complete breaths. It also reinforces the bad sitting posture many of us have from hours in front of the computer. Your time walking should be spent building good posture habits, not contributing to the damage you already do to yourself the rest of the day. Every few minutes throughout your workout, give your shoulders a backwards roll to check that you aren’t hunching them. Special Note From the AFC: Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, June 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, June 14, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Association Committees Active Health Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com Sep.-Apr, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health Our committee meetings have stopped until September 12, but work and activities continue for the 2017-2018 season. Indoor Open Walking is on Mondays and Fridays at 1 PM in AFC 1 and 2; and whenever there are no classes in AFC, drop in walking and independent exercise is allowed. If you wish to walk the golf course, check the seasonal times posted near the Pro Shop and on page 2 of the Tipster. In the fall watch for information from the Hiking Club about its new short hikes. Balance classes will resume Monday, October 2 from 10:30-11:30 AM in AFC; the good news is they will be led by three SCOV residents who are being trained to teach this class by Master Trainer, Heather Chalon. Classes will be administration-sponsored and cost only $2/class using a punch card (or $3 for drop-in). We are lining up speakers for next season, so let us know if you have a topic or speaker in mind. Enjoy your summer. Stay hydrated and use lots of sunscreen.

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Chair Stan Shopa First Wed., 11:30 AM, WC1 afc@suncityorovalley.com We will resume our meetings in September.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, June 2017

Architectural Review Janice Strassburg 520-338-2568, janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Avoidance of Controversy Knowledge is the first step to your rights. I would encourage all residents to go to the SCOV website. As a registered member you may go to the item called Documents. As you scroll through that heading, you will find Tract Declarations. You will need to know which unit you reside in and your lot number. Click on your section, and, albeit rather long, it is worthwhile for you to read it. Most of the information regarding fences, walls and landscape is in Article V or VI. Not all units have restrictions on landscaping, but many do have wording regarding those items. Del Webb wrote those documents when the community was developed. Enforcement has slipped in past years, and now things have deteriorated and become overgrown. Speaking of overgrown, if your tree hangs over your roof, it is an easy access for pack rats. The debris from the tree causes the decking of your roof to rot. In one case a cactus began to grow on the roof. Summer is here and there is lots of indoor time to do some reading of SCOV governing documents.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran vendor@suncityorovalley.com Here are directions for looking up the Vendor List on the website (formerly called Consumer Referral List): go to scovaz.com >Members >Member Services >Consumer Referral Vendor List >Read More. A printed copy of the Vendor List is located at the Welcome Desk in the Activity Center during business hours. Vendors may email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on our Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Chair Sharon Miller muggins48@comcast.net Third Mon., 1 PM, WC3 We will not meet during the summer. Our next meeting will be October 16. If there are questions, address them to Sharon Miller via email. The committee thanks its retiring members Dick Brammell, Chair and Pete Bistany, Secretary for their leadership and service. Wishing you all a wonderful summer.

Food and Beverage Chair Barb McNeill, bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-Jun., First Fri., 1 PM, Restaurant Terrace Many thanks to Del Peterson (former Chair) and his committee for their tireless work in helping make The Views Restaurant/Lounge a huge success: voted Best Restaurant/ Lounge in April by readers of the Northwest Explorer. The Food and Beverage Advisory Committee will refocus our efforts with more emphasis on advising our F&B Director so he can continue to improve food and service consistency. We have a new Restaurant Manager, Errick Owens, and an excellent waitstaff dedicated to this effort. We hope to find ways to delight the residents and their guests by researching competitive facilities and uncovering ideas that will address the needs/wants of existing and new residents. We will work to communicate a positive impression through words and actions to stimulate all residents to become regular customers.

Friends of the Library A Gathering Place There are many gathering places in our community, but one of the best and busiest is our Library. Last year we had over 26,000 resident visits. We come to the Library not only to check out a book or a video but to connect with friends and others who like to read, listen or watch. It’s a place to get a tip about the newest thriller or a great author you might never have tried or just to visit with other residents and our volunteers. Come and visit. You can count on finding a friendly face and a kind word.

Future Housing Co-Chairs Sally Evert 520-955-7877 sallyevert@gmail.com Jon Olson 818-3705 jboclo@comcast.net No meetings May-Sep. The Future Housing Committee thanks you for the the huge participation in our focus groups and survey. We have also been gathering input from our amazing Ambassadors who are requesting and recording comments about what visitors like about our housing stock as well as what they might like to have available. During the summer, members of our committee will be discussing and analyzing all of this data, as well as integrating it into one comprehensive report. After the report is accepted by the committee, we will hold a community meeting to report to you what we heard and ask one more time if you have anything to add. This may not happen until the fall, depending on how long the process takes. Finally, we will develop recommendations for the Board. Stay tuned; there is progress being made, even if you aren’t seeing it at the present time.

Please Remember Whether you are here or away for the summer, please remember: • Weeds in cracks of driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt of the street, are the responsibility of the homeowner to remove. • Cactus and/or bushes in your yard should not extend over the sidewalk causing danger to walkers. • Trees must be kept trimmed up at least seven feet high over the sidewalk so as not to injure walkers or block visibility of a stop sign. • Exposed soil, or bare dirt, needs to be covered by rock. • Artifacts, including empty pots, are not allowed in front yards. Pots should be planted with live plants, as artificial ones are not allowed. • For safety reasons, trim any vegetation blocking numbers on your house, and be sure the numbers are lit and visible from the street, day and night. • Shrubs near the entrance to your driveway need to be cut down to a height of less than 42 inches so as not to block visibility of a vehicle exiting the driveway.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1 The Properties Committee has completed its recommendation to retrofit the parking lot lights with high efficiency LEDs. This will improve the quality of light and reduce our energy costs. The project will be underwritten with grants and rebates from Tucson Electric Power Company and its partners. Last year’s retrofit program resulted in significant cost reductions at the upgraded facilities with the Activity Center leading the way with a greater than 10% monthly savings. Please join us at our June meeting. We always need new members and ideas of what Properties should peruse.

to the application of the chemical to remove the ryegrass. The hope is that the aerification and topdressing will give the Bermuda grass a head start to begin growing quicker. In prior years, the chemical was applied first to remove the ryegrass and reduce competition, but it seemed to slow the Bermuda grass following aerification. We are dealing with salts that have built up in the soils over the winter. Removal of salts requires lots of aerification with sand topdressing, addition of drainage to alleviate wet areas and increased amounts of irrigation to leach out the salts. However, in May and June the water requirements are so high with the hot temperatures and low humidity that overwatering is not an option, so the aerification is very important. By the start of June, all of the fairways, tees and greens will be aerified and fertilized to encourage the growth of the Bermuda grass. Please be patient with the condition of the golf course in June. Lots of work is going into improving the course. After June, the course will be really green for the rest of the summer.

Golf Advisory Chair Yvette Schulz 520-825-0797 First Wed., 2 PM, WC3 As our season winds down, a busy time begins for our maintenance department. Mike Kropf and his crew will be busy with various projects over the summer. Fairways will be aerified if needed. The work on the pond on the left side of number 10 will be resumed. There are plans to work on the sand traps on number 18 and the sand traps on number 4. Please support Mike and his crew as they work to keep our course in fantastic shape.

Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs kgriggs@theviewsgolfclub.com 917-8053 The new fiscal year is upon us and we will begin selling golf passes this month. Stop by the Administration building and see Lisa or Karen to get your pass. There are several different options available this season, so stop by the Pro Shop to pick up your rate cards. This information is also available on our website: theviewsgolfclub.com. For those of you who enjoy walking or riding the course, please check the times on the signs as we begin earlier through the summer. We certainly do not want any conflicts with the golfing traffic. Tuesday’s walking times have changed as we have 6:30 AM tee times through 5 PM. We no longer have a golf course maintenance day. The current walking hours are before 6 AM and after 6 PM.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 June is the ugliest time of the year for the golf course. The winter ryegrass has been chemically removed and has turned brown, but the underlying Bermuda grass hasn’t had enough time to start growing fully. The humidity is very low so the water in the soil evaporates quickly, making the golf course look brown. This year, aerification of the fairways is being done prior

Most of our seasonal resident customers have departed for the summer; however, this has not diminished our efforts to continuously improve our menu and service. In addition, we are in the process of improving another important aspect of the operation: reducing its carbon footprint. When I arrived in SCOV, the restaurant was already benefiting from the solar power system. That’s an amazing thing. Customers will see evidence of other things we are doing to benefit the environment. One is that plastic straws will not be automatically served with non-alcoholic drinks, to reduce material that is part of the trash. Servers will be happy to provide one upon request Another thing you will notice: reduction in the amount of linens, especially table cloths, used in the restaurant. The reason for this is the heating of wash water for cleaning linens requires an enormous amount of energy, and some of the chemicals used are hazardous to Mother Earth. Our linen company advertises that they remove “harmful waste… before it reaches the drain,” but where do these chemicals end up? Therefore, we are doing our part by not utilizing

Tom Moore’s uncle was a silver jeweler for 35 years. When it came time to hang up the apron, Tom was the only family member who had any interest in his uncle’s tools. A retired comptroller, Tom had no previous training in the arts until taking a class here about 2½ years ago. He enjoys socializing with a fun group of women and men who gladly share ideas and help. Curiosity and enthusiasm lead him to more complex projects such as bracelets and overlay pieces. His biggest challenges have been patience Tom Moore soldering a silver wire bracelet. and self-critique, but his craft work has progressed and he’s seen the improvement in the quality of his jewelry and that has been very rewarding. He also volunteered to serve on the board, and is now the vice president. His best advice for students is to participate fully beyond the beginner class and be open to new learning opportunities.

They have been hung on the walls in plain sight so they can be easily found. There’s more: two new metal lockers were purchased and are being used for storing consumable supplies, machine parts and tooling for machine repairs. This made more lockers available for renting to members and has reduced the mess on storage shelves. Also, the storage shelves used by our Seniors For Kids toy makers have been revamped and organized to make the many little parts easier to find and inventory. If you haven’t been in the shop for a while, stop by and take a look. The place looks great.

I hope when you saw the Tipster cover last month, you made it down to the courtyard. What a wonderful display of cooperation and talent from the Clay and Glass clubs. The creativity, thought and whimsy is a testimony to the folks who live here. When looking to cool off this summer, pay a visit to the club and we will be happy to answer all questions and show you that your friends and family will love the holiday gifts from you this year. Christmas begins in July for me. Last month we added a new board member, Nancy Eckhoff. Her knowledge of supplies and questions about firing brings an added quality to the board. Thank you to all the volunteers in the club who help with all the needed tasks to stay running smoothly. Hope to see you soon.

This is the team of engineers and optical scientists that designed and built, over a seven-year period, this 28-foot primary mirror for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) at the Mirror Lab under the football stadium at the U of A. Daily tours are available M-F online at: mirrorlab.as.arizona.edu. The Sun City Astronomy Club has suspended activities for the summer and will bring back its popular speakers series on October 19. Club President Ron Collins and board members are putting together the speakers schedule for the 2017-2018 year, and it looks like another exciting and informative group. Nelson Tilden, the go-to member for any questions about astronomy and the Star Party says “maybe, if we can dodge the monsoons, a Star Party might be arranged in August.” Check the online calendar.

Pilates Mary Ayers 638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Forty years after his death, the Joseph Pilates system of exercises is still in high demand. Fortunately, Sun City offers his mat Pilates classes twice per week Mondays and Thursdays. Summer is here and classes are smaller and more personal. First, basic stretching exercises are performed to warm up, and then a Pilates mat routine is done, modified for those of us with limitations. People ask, “Can the benefits of the Pilates method, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is yes and the benefits achieved in our classes can’t be beat. Don’t forget about improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and well being. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary 638-7916.
