General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080
From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors meadedavis11@gmail.com Long-Range Planning Helps Build Our Future by Meade Davis e enjoy the location, attractiveness and the many amenW ities SCOV has to offer. However, we must continually look at new or improved features for our community in order to maintain our satisfaction with SCOV. This will help keep our community attractive to new buyers and, in turn, protect our home values. The Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) is tasked with identifying these features and establishing their priorities. These ideas become recommendations for consideration by the Board of Directors. The LRPC works hard at these goals by obtaining present and prospective residents' input. The LRPC is now completing an analysis of the recent residents' survey. It closely monitors the Ambassador Tour surveys and those from the Future Housing Committee. In addition, the LRPC has an ongoing benchmarking process in which it studies other comparable communities for new ideas and trends. Individual ideas from current residents and other available sources are carefully considered as well. This is now an ongoing process. In the past long-range plannings have been singular events. The present LRPC is a permanent and dynamic committee. As our community evolves, current amenities need to be updated and new features considered. The vibrancy and attractiveness of SCOV today is a result of effective long-range planning. We applaud the continuing efforts of this hard working committee. Thank you.
Spring and Summer Bring Bees As summer approaches, I am reminded about how important it is to avoid bees. For most people, a bee sting is an uncomfortable experience but not a life-threatening event. For approximately 3 percent of adults and 0.5 percent of children, however, a sting by a bee, wasp, hornet or yellow jacket can result in a whole-body allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), a true medical emergency. The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid being stung. Generally, insects such as bees and wasps aren’t aggressive and only sting in self-defense. If a few bees are flying around you, calmly and slowly walk away from the area. Swatting at an insect may cause it to sting. When a bee stings, it releases a chemical that attracts other bees, so if a bee or wasp stings you, or if many insects start to fly around you, cover your mouth and nose and quickly leave the area. Try to get into a building or closed vehicle. The following are some additional measures you can take to stay sting-free: • Have hives and nests near your home removed by a professional. • Use caution when working around bushes, shrubs, trees and trash cans. • Always wear shoes when walking outside, particularly on grass. • Wear pants, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, close-toed shoes and socks when working outdoors. • Avoid very loose-fitting clothing that can trap insects. • Don’t wear brightly colored clothing or flowery prints because it could attract insects. Avoid using perfumes or other scented products for this reason as well. • Always check food and drinks (especially open cans of soda or drinks with straws) before consuming, especially at pools and picnics. • Serve beverages in wide, open cups, since they easily allow you to see what’s inside. • Avoid eating sweet foods outside. • Cover food containers and trash cans tightly. • Clear away garbage, fallen fruit and animal feces (flies can attract wasps). • Keep the windows rolled up when driving or riding in a car.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Golf Cart Registration You will be required to register your golf cart this year. After this initial registration, annual stickers will need to be applied. We didn’t do this last year and found out that it was still something the community wanted, so it’s being reinstated. Please stop by the Administration Office to register your cart and pick up your sticker.
Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Is It Really an Association Emergency? Only call the Association emergency number listed in the Tipster if there is a problem with a facility or facility area. This number is not to be called for a personal problem or something you see at a neighbor’s house. If you feel there is any potential danger, please call 911. Don’t ever say, “Well, I don’t want to bother the police.” Once again, this number is to be called only for an Association property emergency. Thank you.
Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Neighbors Notified of House Expansions At the Board Meeting on April 24, a change to the Development Standards concerning permanent improvements on residential property was approved. Permanent Improvement, as defined in the Development Standards (DS) Article, 1, Section 1.28, shall mean an addition, alteration or modification that alters the original (or any prior ARC approved) footprint of the dwelling and/or garage if residential; or any new building if intended for commercial or institutional use; or any addition, alteration or modification to the exterior of an existing building if not a single-family use structure. The change requires a notice be sent to each neighbor owning a lot within 100’ of the perimeter of the platted lot in the submittal (DS 4.3.f). This communication will advise those neighbors that a submittal has been made for a room addition or other change to the house footprint. The submittal form and drawings will be made available at the Administrative Office, Monday through Friday, 9-11 AM, for review by those who receive the notice. No pictures of the plans may be taken because, in most cases, the owner has paid an architect to produce the plans. All inquiries and comments about the project must be addressed to the owner of the property. Currently the governing documents do not allow neighbors to prevent a permanent improvement project that meets all governing document requirements. With Board support, the Task Force to Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values recommended this initial step in establishing reasonable, respectful guidelines for community members to learn of developments within their neighborhoods. The next steps, anticipated in the fall of 2018, will include specificity to balance individual and community property rights.

Our software has been updated, providing exciting new online capabilities. Now you can more easily search and sort your library history, and even save a wish list of books and movies you want to read or watch in the future. Saving items to a list can be useful if you are at your limit of items but don’t want to forget the name of something you want to check out when you get back from cooling off in the White Mountains. Stop by the library for directions, or sign in to your library account and explore with your mouse. Also new is a subscription to BookPage: America’s Book Review, a review of new releases in literary fiction and quality nonfiction books. Fifty copies of this publication will be available for free at the beginning of each month, while supplies last. Many of you stay indoors and watch movies to keep cool in the summer heat. With that in mind, we have added over 50 new videos, including movies, documentaries and TV series, to our collection in the last two months. Come in to see what’s new in all our collections or visit us online.
Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Resistance Train to Prevent Muscle Loss When it comes to muscle, use it, lose it or build it. Muscle plays a crucial role in human health; it allows us to stand, walk, balance, lift and breathe. Building and maintaining muscle is important for both men and women, because strong muscles help reduce back pain, prevent falls and more. Registered dietitian nutritionists, personal trainers and physicians agree muscle mass is important for optimal calorie burning, dense bones and increased energy. Although resistance training strengthens and maintains the major muscle groups, it does not always equate to bulking up. Resistance training does not need to happen at the gym; in fact, it is easy to do anywhere. For best outcomes, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends strength training two to three times a week for at least 20 minutes. When using weight machines, free weights or resistance bands, selecting the proper weight is crucial to improving strength and preventing injury. Set a target of 8 to 12 repetitions and work up gradually to two to three sets. If you prefer exercises that do not require weights, exercises that use your own body weight also are a good option. Push-ups, squats, planks, hip lifts and dips are just some of the numerous equipment-free resistance training options. Incorporating resistance training into a regular exercise routine is crucial for maintaining healthy muscles and bones while increased muscle mass can boost energy and metabolism. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, June 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, June 13, the Desert Oasis Pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

The Activity Center Renovation Committee (ACRC) has started to create a design that, when implemented, would bring the Activity Center (AC) up to Sun City quality standards and will best serve the current and future needs of our residents. Since 1988 when the AC was opened, there have been many changes. The administration offices have been moved to the Welcome Center. The lighting, audio and video systems in the Auditorium have been maintained and upgraded by a group of dedicated monitors and volunteers, but they are primarily based on 1980’s technology. The kitchens may no longer be adequate to serve our needs. There have been piecemeal refreshes done over the years, but this will be the first comprehensive renovation of the entire facility. The ACRC will be listening to the residents to determine our current and future needs. Professional experts will be engaged to help create a design for approval by the community.

Check both the online directory and the paper directory. Is your deceased partner still listed? A lot of people like to keep their loved one’s name in the directory, for safety or for sentiment. So deceased spouses are removed only when the surviving spouse requests it. If you’ve decided it’s time to update your listing, just let me know. four course meal was five-star quality, both food and service. This was followed on April 30 by the Farewell Wine Dinner, featuring a five course meal, paired with wonderful wines. Aalt, Chef Paul, Errick and our tremendous wait staff went all-out to show us what another five star experience is like. One customer said it all: “Best meal I’ve had in 20 years.” Starting May 29 through July 8 (subject to change), the kitchen/dining room will be closed for breakfast. Grilled offerings will be available in the Lounge/Terrace (subject to availability), from 11 AM-7 PM, with Friday evening entertainment at happy hour and Sunday karaoke. Do you need temporary help with meals? Call Vistoso Helpful Hands (520-447-0077) to share a volunteer-prepared meal or get take-out from The Views Restaurant.

The summer heat is turned on, and it is time to read in the coolness of the house, in the shade or even in the pool. I am currently reading a book about members of a book group (Ann Hood’s The Book that Matters Most: A Novel, and it is a perfect beach read). Having a book club of members with whom you can share your thoughts on what you read is a wonderful addition to this “hobby.” Maybe you, too, could join one in the fall at SCOV. Until then, have a great summer.

Summer is here and it is time to visit the Gift Shop to browse and keep cool. With the season comes a new consignor to the shop. Linda Wilkes began jewelry making many years ago, but life generally got in the way until the spring of 2017. “I purchased a bag of jewelry at an estate sale and among the treasures was a beautiful necklace that was handmade. That particular necklace became the impetus to retrieve my jewelry tools, dust them off, and revisit a personal joy that I had long ago abandoned.” She now has a new perspective regarding her craft and loves creating a new piece of jewelry from looking at the color palette of pretty material. She also likes to create with different themes in mind, including one she created that she calls Dimensionz. Contact Don Jovag if you wish to participate in the October Arts and Craft Fair.

Welcome to Tipster articles on the activities of The Greens Reconstruction Committee. Our committee organized last fall based on the charter established by the BOD. Past visits from golf course consultants (Borders Report and United States Golf Association agronomist) had identified serious concerns with the health and longevity of the greens at The Views. The primary concerns identified were the build-up of salts in the root zone and the compacted subsoil under the

greens. We have seen a build-up of salts ever since Oro Valley mandated the use of reclaimed water for our golf course. In addition, the compacted subsoil severely impacts our ability to grow healthy grass root systems. The Views Golf Course was built in the 1980’s without a subsoil drainage system under the greens, which is a 12-20 inch engineered layer of soil, sand, and gravel that allows water/constituents to drain and roots to grow to acceptable depths. Sixteen other golf courses in the Tucson/Oro Valley area were investigated, and all have subsoil drainage systems. The Views does not. Del Webb built golf courses at Sun City in Phoenix similar to The Views. To improve their greens, three of those courses have already reconstructed greens and installed engineered subsoils, with a fourth course being completed this summer. Recent core samples taken at The Views Greens in February, 2018 showed the following results: Infiltration/Depth Water Infiltration Rate (inches/hour) Feeder Roots (4” to 12” depth)

During this time, we take inventory of our items, looking at their condition and the number. We try to meet the major needs of all our residents but do have limited space, so there are likely to be items we pass on to other groups. We try to keep the chaos to a minimum during our open hours. Please come to the Loan Room or visit the web site for items you may need (or just to look around).
Marketing Chair Pete Coy 360-739-4100 petecoy@gmail.com Fourth Mon., 3 PM, WC1

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Summertime Reminders Whether you are here or away for the summer, please remember: • Weeds in cracks of driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt of the street are the responsibility of the homeowner to remove. • Cactus and/or bushes in your yard should not extend over the sidewalk causing danger to walkers. • Trees must be kept trimmed up at least 7 feet high over the sidewalk so as not to injure walkers or block visibility of a stop sign. • Exposed soil, or bare dirt, needs to be covered by rock. • Artifacts, including empty pots, are not allowed in front yards. Pots should be planted with live plants, as artificial ones are not allowed. • For safety reasons, trim any vegetation blocking numbers on your house, and be sure the numbers are lit and visible from the street, day and night. • Shrubs near the entrance to your driveway need to be cut down to a height of less than 42 inches so as not to block visibility of a vehicle exiting the driveway. Neighborhood Pride thanks you for remembering the above reminders. Have a wonderful summer.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1
The Properties Committee was pleased with the improvement observed from our previous facilities inspection —–especially with regard to safety-related items. This improvement is the result of conscientious effort on the part of Association staff, and the committee is gratified by their good work. We continued our inspection activities in May with a thorough inspection of the Activity Center in support of the Activity Center Renovation effort. Other current committee activities include nighttime lighting and dumpster issues in the Mountain Vista complex. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. If you are interested in the activities of the Properties Committee, please plan to attend our next meeting on Thursday, June 21, 9 AM, WC.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 June is historically the hottest and driest month of the year. This is also the ugliest time of the year for overseeded golf courses in the desert southwest because this is the time of year when golf courses transition from the winter Ryegrass to the summer Bermuda grass. Anytime a grass dies there will be a lot of brown areas, and there will also be thin areas until the underlying Bermuda grass makes a full recovery. Our transition program, developed over many years, has helped minimize these thin areas and drastically decreased the amount of area needed to repair. Mechanical methods of transition include aerification, topdressing, verticutting and fertilizing which are performed during the month of May to provide a good environment for the Bermuda grass to recover in June. Combined with the mechanic transition methods, the Ryegrass has been chemically treated to start thinning out as far back as March. This process allows the Bermuda grass a less competitive environment to get access to sunlight earlier in the year. The final chemical application is made in

mid-May to completely remove the Ryegrass and poa annua that still remain in the fairways and tees. This is when the big weak areas begin to show up in June. During the middle of June, each of the nine holes will be closed for a week to allow a much quicker time frame to repair these bare areas in the fairways. This will allow the golf course to heal much faster and be back to great condition by the middle of July.
Golf Advisory Chair Yvette Schulz 520-825-0797 Sep.-May, First Wed., 2 PM, WC3
Summer is upon us and Mike Kropf and his crew are working hard on bringing our course out of overseed. The Ryegrass is dying out and the Bermuda grass is coming back. Support and respect Mike and his crew. Now that the gate system of entering and exiting the fairways is not in use, remember to enter and exit the fairways at 90 degrees. This reduces the wear and tear on the fairways. When parking your cart by the greens or tees, please have all four wheels on the cart path. This helps maintain the grass near the cart paths. The new representatives for the 2018-2019 season are: 18-Hole Men's League, Jack Breslin; 18-Hole Women's League, Ruth Bonfiglio; 9-Hole Men's League, Bob Henderson and Gary Gibson, alternate; 9-Hole Women’s League, Louann Convey and Mary Barr, alternate. Doug Kimble is the new chair and Beth Allen will be the vice chair. Have a great summer.

Those wanting to join and experience the studio are encouraged to sign up in the main pottery room and orientation classes will be offered when there are enough signed up to make a full class. You will be notified individually when this occurs. As the weather heats up and the population dwindles for the season, it is quieter, but still a productive time. Cleaning sessions still happen with the associated after parties, but meetings are suspended until September. There was even a cookie making party recently, although you would not want to eat these cookies. They are small clay disks which are an important part of keeping our kiln shelves safe during firings. So much to know about clay.

Steve Perkins has been in the photo club for two years and is currently the club treasurer and program director. He was introduced to photography by his dad who sold photographic equipment. Steve remembers, as a young kid, traveling with his dad to different places in the Southwest including many of the old trading posts that sold camera equipment. Many years ago Steve used film photography in his construction busiSteve Perkins with his abstract, “Spheres.” ness, documenting construction progress. Later in life, Steve began selling real estate and used his photography skills in the marketing of real estate. Soon after retiring, Steve began taking photography classes at Pima Community College. He entered the digital arts program at Pima and highly recommends their digital programs. The club’s final meeting for the 2017-2018 year was May 9, our awards night. Club meetings will resume in September. We hope everyone has a happy and productive summer.

Why the name Casa Amigas? Well, I'm glad you asked. Many years ago, when this group was formed, they began by sewing children's clothes for Casa de los Ninos. Casa de los Ninos is an organization which started over 40 years ago by a Catholic nun. With few resourses, she ran a small home where abused children could go after being discharged from the hospital. Obviously, the need was great for clothing and other personal items. Thus, a match was made. The sewing group selected the name Casa Amigas, which means "female friends of the house." The house being Casa de los Ninos or "house of the children." Currently the focus for this group is still sewing for at-risk children. Cheer Bears

In our club we read and discuss selections of thoughtprovoking works of literature presented in anthologies by the Great Books Foundation. We offer great conversations about great ideas. We will resume meeting in October. Our next book will be Happiness and Discontent, an international collection of literature, philosophy and poetry specially selected for book discussion by The Great Books Foundation. Readings include such authors as Aristotle, Emily Dickinson and Reynolds Price. Hopefully the readings will challenge your assumptions and spark debate. The book can be purchased from the Great Books Foundation or from Amazon.

Set in South Africa in the mid 1940s, the book examines themes of fear, racism, tribalism and equality that continue to resonate across the globe.

Don’t forget to snap some pictures of the cemetery entrance, gravestone closeup as well as the surrounding area. Be sure the GPS button of your smart phone is turned on. While there, take a few pictures of extra graves. Then add the pictures to FindAGrave. com and/or BillionGraves.com. It’s an exciting way to share your findings from your genealogy hunt on these websites with other genealogists around the world who are searching for relatives.

Those of us who’ve experienced a senior moment or two or stopped counting will appreciate the theme of our physicist-poet Adrian Korpel’s “Cartesian Plaint.” "I used to know both X and Y / and sometimes even Z. / Oh, how they loved to multiply / and form a jolly three! / Oh, how they squared and added / working to make a perfect ring /where bold X squarely cuddled Y / in a lusty geometric fling. / But now I’m old and weary / dear X has slipped my mind / while Y became a fugitive / impossible to find. How did I get from there to here? / Where are the Ys of yesteryear?" Knowing the purported benefits of a creative activity like composing a poem, we’d like to keep meeting throughout the summer; however, due to the number of anticipated absences, it will likely make sense to take a break or breaks. Members will be advised via email but all are encouraged to keep writing.

Space doesn't allow us to provide detailed information about the myriad ways dancing can impact your physical as well as mental health, so please ask Google or Alexa to look up “dancing makes you smarter.” There are fabulous articles you can read when it’s too hot to go outside. Next month I’ll find you some articles on dancing and your bones. So keep dancing and don’t forget to hydrate.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
Forty years after Joseph Pilates' death, his system of exercises is still in high demand. Fortunately, SCOV offers his mat Pilates classes twice per week, Mondays and Thursdays. Summer is here, and classes are smaller and more personal. First, basic stretching exercises are done for warming up, and then the mat routine is performed with modified moves for those of us with limitations. People ask, "Can the benefits of the Pilates method, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body's core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?" The answer is a firm, "Yes." The benefits achieved in our classes cannot be beat and don't forget about improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and well-being. The cost is only $8/class, and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary.

They used a spongerubber ball and a short handled wooden paddle that allowed the children to pick up the game quickly, preparing them for regulation tennis. If you are interested, we’ll train you. Visit our Dave Scoles captured this amazing sunset from his front yard. website for more information and how to donate bikes or financial support. Aluminum Can Collection Update On May 15, 580 pounds of aluminum cans were taken to the scrap yard. We received $0.43 per pound which converts to $249.40 for the trip. Fiscal year-to-date, we have delivered 3,780 pounds of material and received a total of $1,578. As you should be aware, this primarily is used for purchases in the Loan Room. Thanks go to Jim Wisda, driver, and unloading helpers, Dave Flatness, Jeff Lawyer and Dave Johnson. Thanks again to all volunteer on our recycling program.
