General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors meadedavis11@gmail.com SCOV Needs You by Meade Davis SCOV is a wonderful community in which we are proud to live. We have an attractive, friendly and financially strong community where we enjoy life and continue to be active. However, these attributes come with some resident responsibilities. Besides paying HOA dues, we all have the responsibility of being good neighbors, keeping informed about SCOV and getting involved with committees, clubs and other activities. Our community depends on our willingness to take active roles with the Board of Directors, clubs, committees and the like. Besides being fun, taking an active part in our community not only benefits SCOV, but also rewards the individual resident. We gain new friendships and develop a deep sense of satisfaction from positively contributing to our community. Remember, the process of volunteering also benefits our mental and physical well being. So, for the sake of the community and ourselves, don't hesitate, step up and make an effort to volunteer within our community. The first step might be simply attending a committee meeting or Board meeting. All residents are welcome to these meetings, which are posted on SCOV calendars. I hope to see you at a meeting soon.

Homeowners new to SCOV

Volunteers are Appreciated Doing good may be its own reward, but most volunteers would probably agree that it’s also nice to be recognized for the time, effort and commitment they put into serving others, particularly in what can sometimes seem to be thankless roles. Members of our community devote their energy and enthusiasm to making SCOV the very best it can be by serving on the Board, a committee and on club leadership. Volunteers help keep assessments down; every hour of volunteer work is an hour of salary the association does not have to pay a service provider. Below are some easy ways to show your neighbors how much you personally appreciate their hard work. • Send an email to a volunteer explaining that he or she is valued for stepping up. • Shake a volunteer’s hand and just say, “Thank you.” A nice big smile is also appreciated. • Pitch in and help out if you can. As volunteers, your neighbors invest their time in projects that benefit you. No association can thrive without volunteers, so let them know you appreciate their efforts. There’s a lot to be gained from volunteering your time: new friends, new skills, recognition by your neighbors and, perhaps best of all, an improved community. Come on and consider being a part of the volunteer network. Welcome to the party.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 What to Do, What to Do? We’ve made it easier for you to find something to do here in SCOV. There are three ways improvements have been made. The first is on the home page of the website where at the bottom of the page all the activities are listed in three columns. The first column is for fun activities, the second column is fitness classes and the third column is the business portion of the Association listing Board and committee meetings. The second improvement is that on the big color calendar pullout in the Tipster all the fun activities are listed on one side and the fitness classes are on the other side. The last improvement is also in the Tipster. In the past, committees, the restaurant and Pro Shop listed activities in their sections, but now, all those activities are listed in the Coming Events section of the Tipster which is easy peasy to find. No more searching, and you’ll never have to wonder about what to do, what to do.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Spring and Summer Programs Coming up will be performances from Tucson Symphony, an Arizona Diamondback baseball game and bluegrass music, so loved by SCOV residents. There will be more TAD Management concerts and comedy shows in the future. During our summer months there are just not enough residents here to meet the high price of TAD shows. There will be many free talks and events to keep our year-round residents busy. Many clubs also offer more trips and things to do.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Going Away for the Summer? Time flies and suddenly residents are making plans for returning to their other homes for the summer. When you are away from SCOV for an extended period of time, it is necessary to make arrangements to have your yards looked after. Just in case you are new to our community and have not yet experienced the monsoon season, it is a time when heavy winds blow, torrential rains can fall and thunder and lightning occur. When this happens, debris from trees and shrubs drops to the ground. Trees, plants and especially weeds grow fast because of the moisture. Applying pre-emergent is a good way to reduce the number of weeds that may appear. Some may still pop up, especially the nasty spurge weed. Bottom line, please make sure you have someone assigned to gardening tasks while you are gone. Your neighbors will thank you, and we thank you for your cooperation.

March in SCOV is a month for bibliophiles. While there will not be a traditional book and author luncheon this year, in its place the Friends of the Library (FOL) is offering two new events that are geared toward rewarding FOL membership. A bus trip to the Tucson Festival of Books on Saturday, March 10, is being offered at a cost of $5 for members, and $15 for nonmembers as space permits. Ticket sales began last month, but you may check with the library about availability. The other new event is a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the FOL featuring mystery author Isabella Maldonado. Cake and coffee will be served. This is a free event for FOL members only. Please obtain a ticket, available in the library starting Monday, March 12, so we know how much cake to order. Let’s celebrate books this month.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Listen to Your Body One frustration in returning to exercise is facing the loss of strength and endurance. Many of us try to push too hard, wanting to be where we were rather than starting out where we are. But, whatever your mind wants, your body has its own agenda and it's important to act on your body's cues to back off. This is especially true when coming back from an illness. If you had a nasty cold or flu, your body expended a lot of energy in fighting it and may be weaker than you think. You should follow doctor's orders, but, when you get back to it, some cues you want to pay attention to include: heart rate or perceived exertion, energy levels, weakness or fatigue. You may be dehydrated, or you may not be eating as much as normal. On top of lingering symptoms like coughing, runny noses and lack of sleep, you can easily fatigue without warning. Learning to listen to your body is essential for getting back to your routine. If what you're doing doesn't feel right for any reason, give yourself permission to end your workout early, just don't forget a light cooldown if needed. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, March 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, March 14, the Desert Oasis Pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Association Committees Help Needed This Help Needed section seeks volunteer help for various Association Committees. You must be an owner/resident to serve. Are you interested in keeping our community beautiful, and do you take pride in living here? If so, the Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC) could use you as a member. It takes three to four hours a month to serve on the committee. Owning a golf cart is not necessary, but it would be helpful. If you are interested and would like to join us, or if you have any questions, call Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 or Katy Mosier, Staff Liaison, 520-917-8058. Active Health Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com Nov.-Apr, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health We are sharing two opportunities in March. The first is a presentation Friday, March 16, 1 PM in the Auditorium called "A Functional Medicine Approach to the Treatment of Neuro-degenerative Disease and Dementia." The presenter is a new SCOV resident, Richard “Rick” Menet, M.D., M.P.H. Rick practiced internal medicine and occupational and environmental medicine for 36 years. In 2011, he was diagnosed with MS. When treatment by traditional medicine left him wanting, he learned about functional medicine and has been

studying it ever since. He will include his personal experience in his presentation. The second opportunity is an experiential/participative workshop, "Awareness in Motion" led by Sifu Gene Nelson, Certified Master Instructor, American Tai Chi & Qigong Association. It will be held in the Activity Center Dance Studio Wednesday, March 21, 7-8:15 PM. Sifu Gene will lead the group through various walking and standing exercises. The goal is to promote heightened mind and body awareness while in motion. Dress appropriately for exercise and see the flyer in this Tipster for more information on both opportunities.

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Chair Stan Shopa First Wed., 11:30 AM, WC1 afc@suncityorovalley.com

A Remarkable Number Our new Aquatic Fitness Center opened in January of 2014. There were many questions about the need for it. The following is an update on Aquatic Fitness Center usage and its impact on our SCOV community. Please keep in mind that home occupancy remains stable year to year. Based on actual numbers, Aquatic Fitness Center visits are up 45% over the last year we have figures for (2012). Total visits for 2017 were 133,488 which is on average over 11,000 visits per month. An additional plus to our Aquatic Fitness Center is that retirement home buyers list a modern updated Fitness Center as very influential in their decision on where to buy their retirement home. Our Aquatic Fitness Center is a highlight on Ambassador Tours and a very solid asset for SCOV homeowners.

The ARC Development Standards are the Bible by which this committee operates. It is also the document that Neighborhood Pride uses. You would find it advantageous to familiarize yourself with the Standards. You may save yourself from a courtesy notification letter by being aware of what is and what is not allowed in our community. While driving around at night you may notice some post lights that are rather bright. A 25 watt bulb is the maximum allowed. A motion sensor light should not project beyond your own property nor should back patio lights project into a neighbor's yard. Rules may at times seem an imposition, but they also keep our community looking good.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com scovaz.com/members/services/directory/

Did you know our directory is on the SCOV website? Find your neighbors' names, or all the people from your hometown, or whatever you seek. The incremental search box will display results as you type. Are you included in the directory? New homeowners are unlisted by default. To add or update your information, complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. You can choose to have certain information unlisted in the paper phone book and/or online. Does the Posse have your phone number? If the Posse notices any issues during their rounds but can’t contact you, they call 911. The directory provides updated contact infor-

Food and Beverage Advisory Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-May, First Fri., 2-3 PM, The Views Terrace It’s the season for our resident javelinas to forage the area around the restaurant with their new babies. They are nice to observe and photograph. They usually don’t bother humans, but consider dogs, like coyotes, a predator. Be patient and keep your distance. They are hard of hearing and don’t see well, but can smell you. If you encounter a herd while leaving the restaurant, please return so a manager can assist you, maybe with a fog horn or long stick for some protection, so you can get to your vehicle safely. Speaking of dogs, all but identified service dogs are prohibited from the restaurant, terrace and patio. While staff might like to serve you in a designated pet-friendly area, it is prohibited by HOA by-laws, which the Board would need to recommend a change for a community vote. Unless changed, staff must ask if your dog is a certified service animal.

Jan Bohe (left) and Joan Kelley. March draws us closer to spring, and the weather is delightful and fresh. Come to your own resident Gift Shop to browse new items from our newest consignors. Featured artists for this month are Jan Bohe and Joan Kelley Jan makes canvas bags to hold plastic grocery bags. She paints and sews on appliques and can make specific designs upon request. She also makes aprons for moms and daughters and other lovely sewing items for the shop. Joan has been a lifelong photographer, and loves to find the right light to reveal things otherwise missed. Look for her yawning bobcat in the card racks or the young swallows huddling in the rain. She is usually in the clay room whenever possible. Her pieces are both hand built and wheel thrown, sometimes altered into different forms. The possibilities are endless.

What's Right Around the Corner? Spring is right around the corner, and here are spring cleaning reminders concerning personal yards: • Make sure your house number is visible from the street and that all lights in the fixture are lit, so it can be seen at night. • Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet over sidewalks. • Plants should not extend out over sidewalks, and frost damaged parts of shrubs and trees should be cut off and removed. • Cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt in the street are the responsibility of homeowners to keep weed-free. • Hedges anywhere in the yard are not to be over six feet tall. • Shrubs near the entrance of a driveway should be cut to less than 42” in height so as not to block visibility of vehicles and walkers. • Outside light bulbs are not to exceed 250 lumens per Oro Valley regulations. Thank you for heeding the above and for continuing to take pride in your property.

Posse Chair Larry Clark 520-404-7664 lclarkscov@gmail.com Meeting First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

The Posse was busy in 2017 driving a total of 12,437 miles on patrols around our neighborhood. We found 929 garage doors open, an increase of 22% over 2016. We called the Oro Valley Police 139 times to come assist, an increase of 33%. Please help us do our job, make sure your phone numbers (or your renters) are up-to-date so we can notify you when we find your door open.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1

The Properties Committee from time to time looks into the costs of utilities at Association owned facilities. Last year the Committee completed a study of the Association’s use and cost of water. Due to our desert location, water usage and conservation is critical. The Association’s expense for water is significant. Most of the expense is for the recycled water used for irrigation at the golf course. The balance is for potable water at Association owned buildings and common area irrigation. While incremental savings are possible, our study revealed SCOV is doing a good job regarding water conservation. This is due to a computer based integrated irrigation system at the golf course, the xeriscape landscaping installed over the years at our common areas and careful monitoring by several staff departments. If you are interested in the activities of the Properties Committee, please plan to attend our next meeting Thursday, March 15.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 March is the beginning of the golf course maintenance busy season. The weather begins to warm up, and the chances of rain goes down. These changes in weather conditions lead to many new challenges on the golf course including a surge in growth of grasses, increased wet and dry areas and Poa Annua seed production. The warmer weather causes the soil temperatures to rise which releases more nutrients to the grass. The problem is that the grass begins to grow faster than it can be mowed. This leads to higher fuel and labor costs for the increased mowing and more grass clippings to clean off the fairways and approaches. The warmer weather also starts the Poa Annua bloom on the fairways, approaches and greens. One of the ways to slow the grass growth and reduce Poa Annua flowering is by spraying a growth regulator. This chemical offsets the price of continued mowing and provides a higher quality turf. The biggest issues in the spring are the increase of dry and wet areas in the fairways. These problem areas occur due to large amounts of play during the winter causing compaction, combined with warmer temperatures. Fairways have already been deep-tine aerified in February and will be done again in March. This process penetrates the soil about 7-9 inches allowing water and air to the roots. The wet areas are alleviated by allowing the water to enter the soil, and the dry spots are less severe with the water reaching the roots.

Golf Advisory Chair Yvette Schulz 520-825-0797 Sep.-May, First Wed., 2 PM, WC3

March is a busy month for our leagues with Club Championships, Member Guest tournaments or hosting Invitational events. Are you a golfer but not interested in golfing in leagues? There are other opportunities for you. We have a Casual Golf Group that plays one Monday a month. We also have a Chipping and Putting League that will meet every Thursday. Stop in the Pro Shop for more information. How is your golf etiquette and pace of play? Hint of the month: In the fairway, please drop your playing partner off with the proper club, then go to your ball and prepare to hit as long as it is safe to do so.

The poem by club member James Pavlakis, “A Bang and a Whimper,” engages the reader directly in what could easily be called a modern dramatic monologue. It also addresses, perhaps obliquely, the question of what constitutes a poem and lets the reader consider the answer: “This poem is aware / that it is being written. / Bang! A mystic start/to startle the senses. / This poem is also aware /that it’s being read. / By you. Right now. / Because it’s a tease. / Reality twisted / can’t be resisted. / This poem is keenly aware / that it needs substance. / It promises something / that must be delivered. / The humbled poet / wonders what that is.” New members are always welcome to join us in our exploration of poetic possibilities.

Quick, quick, slow, pivot, flare, travel, rock step. Secret code? Not really. A big difference between the beginner country dancers and those who’ve been at it awhile can be found by lip reading. We novices traverse the floor repeating the steps aloud and hopefully in time with music. The experts glide around the floor smiling at each other, laughing and often singing along. One thing both groups have in common, a great time at all the dances. Friday, March 9, is March Madness Kactus Kickers Style, our monthly catered dance. Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Joseph Pilates once wrote, "Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness." To enjoy and get the full benefits of Pilates, a person has to understand the application of the basic principles. This takes a little time and patience as Pilates is different from other forms of exercise but is always enjoyable, interesting, challenging and even addictive. Proper balance, breathing, focusing on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and controlling your movements are taught in class. There is constant movement from one exercise to the next and, as a result, a person develops strength and stamina. Posture is improved. Your spine is lengthened and joint flexibility and mobility are improved also. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach the Joseph Pilates system to seniors. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class. Call Mary with questions.

Many medical professionals now recommend Tai Chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. In our classes we not only enjoy learning Tai Chi form, we also increase flexibility and strength. We even learn to reduce stress. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, teach us how to apply Tai Chi principles to our daily lives. A new session will begin with a free introductory class March 22.
