Association News From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. Lighting by Lou Gard For some time SCOV residents have been wondering if and when the street lighting on Rancho Vistoso Blvd. would ever get repaired. There are three circuits of lights on the portion of Rancho Vistoso Blvd. running through SCOV. One of the circuits was repaired several years ago; that circuit, the middle one, runs along Rancho Vistoso Blvd. from near Silverton Ave. to a little bit southeast of Crossbow Dr. The other two have not been repaired due to lack of Town of Oro Valley funds. The problem with all three circuits is that the conduit running between the light poles has collapsed and needs to be replaced and the wiring pulled through. While repairing the first section it was discovered that the wiring running up the light pole to the street lights also needs to be replaced. There is some good news. The Town of Oro Valley has budgeted funds ($450,000) for the second section which runs from near Silverton Ave. east toward Welton Dr., approximately 24 lights. That second circuit section is going out for bids shortly and is due to be completed some time in the summer of 2019. The third circuit runs from southeast of Crossbow Dr. down Rancho Vistoso Blvd. to the SCOV side of the Big Wash. The Town of Oro Valley has put that repair into their five-year plan, possibly to be completed in the 2021-2022 time frame. The timing of this circuit repair could be moved up or extended depending upon money available and other pressing issues within the town. On another subject, residents are continuing to come to events in the Activity Center (AC) with just one person in the car. On February 6, when residents attended the talk on “Modern Terrorism,” the parking lot was full down to the Welcome Center, and several cars were parked on Silverton Ave. There were many who could not get into the AFC or the Artisan Center due to lack of a parking space. Please attempt to share a ride with another person or couple who you know has similar interests regarding an event at the AC. Residents finding parking spots will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Community Associations Principles Even though we live in an association, you might be surprised how many of our neighbors–owners and renters alike–don’t really understand the fundamental nature of common-interest communities. We know that many others, including the media and government officials, lack a true understanding of the community association (or condominium) concept. Community Associations Institute (CAI), a national membership organization that represents the best interests of common-interest communities like ours, developed 10 basic principles that answer three essential questions: What is the basic function of a community association? What are the essential obligations and expectations of homeowners? What are the core principles that should guide association leaders? I’m confident you’ll recognize our community while reading these principles. 1. Associations ensure that the collective rights and interests of homeowners are respected and preserved. 2. Associations are the most local form of representative democracy, with leaders elected by their neighbors to govern in the best interest of all residents. 3. Associations provide services and amenities to residents, protect property values and meet the established expectations of homeowners. 4. Associations succeed when they cultivate a true sense of community, active homeowner involvement and a culture of building consensus. 5. Association homeowners have the right to elect their community leaders and to use the democratic process to determine the policies that will protect their investments. 6. Association homeowners choose where to live and accept a contractual responsibility to abide by established policies and meet their financial obligations to the association. 7. Association leaders protect the community’s financial health by using established management practices and sound business principles. 8. Association leaders have a legal and ethical obligation to adhere to the association’s governing documents and abide by all applicable laws. 9. Association leaders seek an effective balance between the preferences of individual residents and the collective rights of homeowners. 10. Association leaders and residents should be reasonable, flexible and open to the possibility–and benefits–of compromise. If you have, you would be right. Since 2012 SCOV’s population has changed by almost 60%. Yes, that is correct. Over half of you are new to SCOV in the past six years. For those of you in the new group, welcome, we’re glad you’re here. For those of you in the seasoned group, enjoy meeting new friends and neighbors. This is an exciting time to be living here, so much to do, so many great people to meet. If you’re interested in the statistics, here goes: ownership changed in 2012 by 7.15%, 2013 by 8.64%, 2014 by 8.52%, 2015 by 7.8%, 2016 by 9.45%, 2017 by 8.32% and 2018 8.24%. Cumulatively those changes add up to a 58.12% increase. Special thanks to David Johnson for compiling these stats.

Our annual Courtyard Sale is Saturday, March 30. For future reference, the sale is always the last Saturday in March. This sale has become known as the “Why did I bring this to Arizona?” sale. A few reminders to those who are new to the community. If you are participating in the sale have your table set up and ready to go no later than 6:15 AM. Most are set up between 5:30 and 6 AM. You must use only the table you purchased, no other tables allowed. To rent a table for this event, come to the Activity Center, Monday and Tuesday, March 18 and 19, 9-11 AM. The tables that you rent are 8 feet long. Please remember, only service dogs are allowed in the public spaces. So come to the sale, have a donut and coffee sold by Seniors for Kids and look around. A truck from Big Brothers Big Sisters will be on site at 10:30 AM to take any donations of items that you don’t sell.

Perhaps they are thinking of moving to a different SCOV house or else moving closer to their families in other states. If you are listing your home, please contact Karen Loffredo, Community Services Coordinator. She may be reached by email kloffredo@suncityorovalley.com or 520-917-8087; she will contact a member of the Architectural Compliance Team (ACT). That member will review just the exterior of your home, so you understand any deficiencies that need to be addressed. This mandatory ACT Listing Inspection will give you a chance to correct any Association governing document violations before a sale. Once you have corrected any issues, you may arrange a re-inspection prior to an escrow, so your home’s exterior has a “clean bill of health.” If you are just curious whether your home meets the requirements of the Development Standards and the CC&Rs, please arrange an ACT Courtesy Inspection. LF Connect lets your control your own workout experience; for example, if you want to do a workout that is not programmed on the machines, simply create, share and personalize your own, manipulating time, speed and intervals. You can use LF Connect (App or computer) to create your workout at home or even on the way to the gym. When you arrive your workout is ready to go. The LF Connect App also allows you to log your strength session as well as record any exercises you do outside the gym. Use the app to record your run or bike ride. Each resistance machine will have a QR barcode to scan, then simply record your sets, reps and weight, keeping your workout logs all in one place. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. On Friday, March 15, 1 PM, Auditorium, the Active Health Committee is hosting a presentation on Alzheimer’s by Daniel Horzempa, M.D. Most of us believe that Alzheimer’s/dementia is a condition that cannot be successfully treated. The good news is that since 2012, individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia have been successfully treated by a team of researchers at UCLA, headed by Dr. Dale Bredesen. Hundreds of medical providers across the U.S. have since been certified in the use of this protocol to treat Alzheimer’s. Dr. Horzempa is a graduate of the Integrative Medicine Program at the U of A. He is currently treating several patients in the Tucson area using the Bredesen protocol. Dr. Horzempa will discuss the evolving science that has accumulated over the past 30 years which has brought us a more complete understanding of what drives the development of Alzheimer’s. To illustrate the practical application of this multifaceted, individually tailored program, he will review case studies of several of his patients and how they are progressing. See Workshops and Classes on page 13 for a musical meditation class sponsored by the Active Health Committee.

With spring fast approaching, we invite you to visit the freshness of the art in the Gift Shop. Featured artists this month are Janice Moll and Mary Murck. Janice’s transition from the Midwest to the Mary Murck (left) and Janice Mol (right) Sonoran Desert inspired her to capture as much of her new environment as she can in her art. She now attempts to represent the desert world around her as she experiences it in daily life. Since moving to SCOV, Janice discovered clay and mixes hand building with her wheel-thrown pots. Growing up, Mary loved art, but it was on hold for her until in her 40s, when she discovered clay. Her hand-built pieces are imaginative and useful. “My designs are mostly utilitarian, but I love doing decorative things as well. I really love angels and birds. The angels are representational, more folk art, while the birds are whimsical and fun.”

The 2019-2020 SCOV Association budgeting process continues. The first draft of the budget was presented to the Finance-Budget Committee during its February 26 meeting. If any additions/changes are recommended, a second draft will be prepared and presented for discussion at a special meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 4, 1:30 P.M. The committee will finalize its budget recommendation during its regularly scheduled March 25 meeting. The budget recommended by the committee will then be presented to the Board of Directors at the Thursday, April 11, study session. The budget, with any Board changes, will be placed on the Board agenda for approval during the April 23 Board meeting. Committee charter, agendas and minutes are posted on the SCOV website. Here’s how that was recently demonstrated at The Views Restaurant. One of our regular customers, who eats at least twice a day with us, had not been seen for several days. Staff contacted me to see if someone could do a wellness check on this fellow. Sure enough, neighbors knew that he fell in the night and was taken to a care facility. His regular wait staff misses him and hopes he will be able to return home soon. Everyone is enjoying the ambiance the new bistro lights provide on the Terrace. Additional heaters are there for more comfort during the winter evenings. Do not move the tables and heaters without staff assistance, as the heating coil can damage light bulbs and connectors. Please let staff seat your groups and rearrange the heaters, as needed. Nutritional information (calories, fats, sodium, protein) for some of our menu items is now available at the hostess desk.

The Greens Reconstruction Committee is continuing according to their charter. Phase I was completed with the three community forums held in January. Phase II (detailed construction bid documents and requests for proposals) is ex-

This will be followed by final Board (BOD) approval of the project scope, construction plan and recommendation of a construction contractor along with chartering of an implementation team. The BOD decided that this project is a repair and replacement of an existing asset, and as such the cost of $1.2M will be paid for by monies from the Asset Reserve Fund. The BOD planned that monies would be available for this project. The Asset Reserve Fund is estimated to total $5.2M at the end of the current fiscal year (6/30/19). If you could not attend one of the recent community forums, please take advantage of the video on the SCOV website where our golf architect, Mike Gogel, explains the project details. He details how the costs were developed and the cost savings that were included. Mike has managed numerous golf reconstruction projects throughout the United States, which have all come in on time and under budget. Our committee wants our community to have the same results. The Task Force to Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values was organized around two pressing questions: 1) How to maintain the quality environmental setting currently available to us, keeping SCOV a highly marketable and forward-looking place to live and 2) To answer the concerns of balancing the homeowners’ rights to modify or update homes and landscapes with the neighbors’ rights against encroachment. After several resident surveys, focus groups and forums, procedures have been developed by the task force relating to permanent improvement changes supported by Master Declaration language revisions currently on the ballot. Why do you play golf? Sometimes people say they play golf for one reason and then their behavior does not match the reason why. You will enjoy the game most if your behavior aligns with your purpose for playing. Let’s start with purpose, your intention toward which you are always striving. For example, you play golf to have fun; second, to enjoy people; third, to appreciate the beauty around you and fourth, to compete against yourself and others. An additional principle necessary to enjoy and play better golf is patience. When things start going wrong during the round, impatience will not only affect your “purpose” behavior, but it also keeps you from reaching your goals. If you are patient, it’s amazing how things will work out. When you are patient, you have a different way of looking at things. Impatience often results in poor decision-making and behavior. Another principle is perspective. You understand what is essential in any given situation. In golf, like life, we can fool ourselves into thinking it’s all about results, that who we are is what we accomplish. Instead, we should remember that golf is a game where you can get some good breaks and bad breaks whether you deserve them or not. You can learn a lot about others and yourself while playing golf. If you maintain a positive attitude in golf, even when things may not be going well, I promise that it will carry over to other areas as well. Next time you play golf, have the mindset that your purpose is to have fun, enjoy others, appreciate our beautiful views and the friendly competition. These will guide you as you gain perspective on why you play the great game of golf.

The weather begins to warm up, and the chances of rain goes down. These changes in weather conditions lead to many new challenges on the golf course including a surge in growth of grasses, increased wet and dry areas and Poa Annua seed production. The warmer weather causes the soil temperatures to rise which releases more nutrients to the grass. The problem is the grass begins to grow faster than it can be mowed. This leads to higher fuel and labor costs for the increased mowing, and more grass clippings to clean off the fairways and approaches. The warmer weather also starts the Poa Annua bloom on the fairways, approaches and greens. One of the ways to slow the grass growth and reduce Poa Annua flowering is by spraying a growth regulator. This chemical offsets the price of continued mowing and provides a higher quality turf. Another issue in the spring is the increase of dry and wet areas in the fairways. These problem areas occur due to large amounts of play during the winter causing compaction combined with warmer temperatures. Fairways have already been deep tine aerified in February and will be done again in March. This process penetrates the soil about seven to nine inches allowing water and air to the roots. The wet areas are alleviated

Jance, queen of Arizona mystery/thriller writers, teams up with her protégée, Isabella Maldonado, in a dynamic duo in the Auditorium. Jance authors the Joanna Brady, Ali Reynolds, J.P. Clay Club members are honoring spring in SCOV by creating a flock of hummingbirds ready for display in their homes and gardens. Each bird was formed from a similar pattern, but each projects its own personality. This month the club features wall pockets and planters at the Desert Oasis. These are hand-built for indoor and outdoor walls. One creative use is in the kitchen, as storage for kitchen utensils. The pottery wheels are in continual use, and the pottery and glaze studio windows always have an exciting display of new work. Stop in at the club in the Artisan Center to sign up for orientation, and you will be the next pottery star.

They traveled from Tucson to Los Angeles and then along the southern California coast. They then connected with the Amtrak Empire Builder in Portland, and took that storied train across the Photo by Tom Prall northern U.S. on to St. Paul. Stop by the clay sculpture studio in Catalina Vista on Monday mornings to see some of the clay sculptures in progress. Recently we have had a packed studio so there is a lot of creativity taking place. Last month we shared information on preparing the armature using a brazing process. Aleda Haug has researched alternative methods in preparing an armature. She is teaching a class for current members using a technique that uses smaller gauged wire and apoxie sculpt, which has the adhesive power of epoxy. This technique eliminates the brazing process and when using a smaller gauged wire, it makes it easier to build the armature. Aleda will be guiding class members in refining the details of a body or head in clay. Stop by and view some of our completed projects in the display case outside of the studio.

Some of our Casa members recently delivered the first set of items they made to the Tohono O’odham Sunrise House. This included walker bags, tote bags, fleece blankets, sets of throws and pillows, girls’ dresses, hats, scarves, baby blankets and sweaters. The members received a request for vests for the younger girls for part of their school uniforms and for sturdy tote bags for the older girls. On our next trip we will also include sleeper blankets for the younger children. The Sunrise House is a family resource center in the Tohono O’odham Nation. The schools are part of the Baboquivari Unified School District in Sells. If you still have that top sheet where the bottom sheet gave out and it’s in good condition, please donate it so we can make crib sheets for the various charities we support.

Our speaker on March 21 is Dolores Hill. She was recently honored at the White House for her direction of Target Asteroids, a decade-long program that expands the role of citizen scientists in cutting edge asteroid research. She is also co-director of NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission to the asteroid Bennu. Launched in 2016, the probe is now circling the asteroid and will return a sample to earth in 2023. Bob Cratty (pictured) is retiring following ten years of enriching the lives of many children at Coronado K-8 School by opening up the night skies to them. Bob made the first contact with the school and was instrumental in providing and funding all fifth graders with telescopes. Both he and Harland Goetz were honored by the Astronomy Club at the February 21 meeting. The phenomenon of the Internet of Things (IoT) is where everything is connected and your phone or tablet provide that world interface. In February’s general meeting, we investigated the IoT’s voice activation world of Alexa, Google Home, Cortana and Siri and their use in home automation. This March, we will expand IoT by discussing the growing world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where the computers and devices are able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence such as visual perception, decision making or language translation. The Valentine’s dance was a sea of swirling red. There was great food, romance and even some magnificent dancing. The March dance, “It’s Spring: Time to Kick a Little Kactus,” is Friday, March 8. Doors open at 5:30 PM, with music provided by Clear Country, and dancing 6:30-9:30 PM. Dance classes continue on Thursday evenings. It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short time. Some of us can even do the Two Step basic without saying “quick quick slow slow” out loud anymore. Forgive me for bragging. The Monday practices are helping and so are the men-only classes before the beginner’s class on Thursdays. It’s almost time to elect officers for next year. Sundowners RV Club members ready to take the Lake Havasu sunset cruise Members of the Sundowners RV Club traveled to Cattail Cove State Park in Lake Havasu this past January 24-28 to enjoy hiking, exploring, shopping, campfires and a sunset cruise on Lake Havasu. Many thanks go out to wagonmaster Marge Allen and co-wagonmaster Michelin Taylor for coordinating a relaxing and fun getaway. A great time was had by all. Sundowners members, please keep in mind several board positions are up for election at our general March meeting. Our board encourages all members new and old to get involved with club planning and policy making by holding a board position. Many have, some still have not.
