A Treasure Trove Of Amenities

by Don Coleman We have so many, they are so diverse and they are world class. It is so easy to forget their real value as we often take them for granted. This is my list of our amenities:

•Activity Center/Meeting rooms •Stained Glass •Auditorium (450 seat) •Ceramics •Aquatic and Fitness Center •Sewing •Olympic-sized pool •Pottery •Water sports pool •Wood Working Shop •Catalina Vista/Desert Oasis meeting rooms •Lapidary •Professional pool/billiard tables •Silversmith •Library with over 20,000 titles •Dance Studio •Genealogy lab •Lounge and Coffee Bar •Championship golf course •Walking paths •4 bocce and 5 pickleball courts •Extensive bike paths •8 tennis courts •Referral listing service •The Café with view(s) •Equipment loan room •Computer Learning Center •Over 130 clubs •Artisan Center •Clock Tower view/stairs •Gift Shop •Exercise classes •Art Studio •Miniature golf course •Photo Lab •Common areas and dog park All the costs for these amenities are borne by the Association and are covered in our annual budget as part of our Resident Annual Fees. A few of our amenities not only provide us a direct benefit, but also generate revenue that goes into our operating budget funds, along with our dues. The revenue from these amenities pays a major part in keeping our annual dues lower than they would otherwise be. Contributors are Gift Shop sales, Activities/Ticket sales, Golf Course and Pro Shop sales, The Café sales and Tipster advertising. Collectively, they reduce our contribution to dues by more than $2 million per year or approximately $800 per household. Which amenity do you use regularly? Which do you benefit from that you do not personally use? I think most of us will be surprised when we take a moment to reflect on the value provided for us. Let us not forget another amenity, the view of the Catalinas. Are there changes to our amenities of policy or design that might significantly increase the usage and benefit to you, your family or your renters? Let our various committees and the Board of Directors know your ideas. Let us continue to utilize our amenities to the fullest as we maintain their quality and keep them up to date. SCOV 2015-2016 Budget

After a process that takes place over approximately four months, the 2015-2016 Association Budget is complete and approved. This process includes department managers developing detailed budgets, reviewing department budgets by the department managers, Controller and General Manager; up to three review meetings with the Finance and Budget Committee and at least two meetings with the Board of Directors before final approval. In spite of escalating costs in nearly every area, a few belttightening measures and some new revenue generation resulted in maintaining annual dues at $1,620. Unlike substantial costs savings that have been realized in the past couple of years in only a few areas, this year there were a wide array of small operating adjustments that were developed which will result in financial efficiencies. In addition, marketing, excellent course conditions and great service has resulted in a substantial increase in public golf revenue. These savings and added revenue allowed the dues to remain stable. One material change that took place in the 2015-2016 Budget is that rather than include funds that have been allocated to the Capital Fund for future new construction projects, these funds in the amount of $75,000 were allocated to the Asset Reserve Fund and added to the $1,000,000 allocation that had been previously planned. This additional Asset Reserve Fund money will help strengthen the Reserve Fund for near-term and future repair and replacement of the Association’s major components. In addition to seeking every cost savings measure possible, continual outside-the-box thought will be given to identifying new non-dues revenue producing ideas during the next fiscal year including golf, The Café and other revenue. This watchful eye and efforts to cut costs and generate revenue will greatly assist in maintaining minimal, if any, annual dues increases in future years while continuing to retain a high level of service and maintenance.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle... The Views Golf Club An Amenity and a Business

The Views Golf Club is an amenity enjoyed by over onethird of our Sun City Oro Valley residents. Like all our many amenities, a portion of the home owner’s annual dues supports our golf operations. In return, The Views supports our home values and residents receive reduced golf fees. The Views is also a business. Golf revenue supports golf operations. Our revenue comes from two primary customer groups: our resident and public golfers. Through March, public play accounted for one-third of golf revenues. For both these groups, The Views must be an attractive golf option. The cost, enjoyment and challenge of playing at The Views must be competitive in the changing Tucson area golf market. Kim Griggs, Head Professional and Rick Sample, Assistant Professional are the faces of The Views. They are responsible for managing Pro Shop operations, the tee sheet, giving golf lessons; marketing, organizing and executing tournaments for outside groups; supporting our men’s and women’s golf clubs; and the rangers who have the challenging task of maintaining pace of play and golf etiquette. They are our front line for customer service. While not always visible, Mike Kropf, Course Superintendent, and his crew are responsible for course maintenance. Their responsibilities include obvious activities like mowing grass, cutting pin locations, maintaining sand traps, repairing the irrigation system, managing water usage and setting the course up for daily play. It may not be obvious that the expertise needed for good course and turf management affect maintain the quality of play. In the 2015 golf survey, The Views was rated 4.8 out of 5. The Explorer named The Views the second Best Course in the Northwest. The Arizona Women’s Golf Association recently presented The Views with their GEM (Golf Endorsed by Members) award. Kim, Rick, Mike and their staff deserve credit for the golf experience enjoyed in SCOV. Several years ago the SCOV Board of Directors established a goal of increasing the number of rounds played and the revenue. The golf and marketing staffs, along with the Golf Advisory and Marketing Committees, operate with these goals as a priority. Improving the golf experience is an important element to increase market share. The 2015-2016 Golf Rate Committee developed offerings and fees that are market competitive. They studied area competitors’ fees, turf conditions, and locations to understand who we compete against. The committee also dug deep to learn our golf operations, various customer groups and historical fees the market is willing to pay when playing The Views. Armed with this information, the committee developed offerings to make The Views an attractive golf alternative. They anticipate our share of market, the number of rounds played and the amount of revenue collected will increase.

In addition to passes historically offered, we have some new alternatives for next fiscal year and have reduced daily fees. A list of the many benefits of purchasing passes is available in the Pro Shop. Come play.

Thanks to (l to r) Kim Griggs, Head Pro; Rick Sample, Assistant Pro and Mike Kropf, Superintendent, The Views was rated 4.8 out of 5 in a recent survey of area golfers.

Association Committees Committee meetings are open and all residents are welcome to attend. Active Health

Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/committees/activehealth/

The purpose of the AHC (Active Health Committee) is to identify and develop health and wellness programs for the active adult community of SCOV, in conjunction with the SCOV staff. Webster’s dictionary defines active as “doing things that require physical movement and energy.” The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The AHC is presently planning several presentations for the Fall 2015-Spring 2016 season. Some topics will focus on being active while preventing injury and/or disease; others will focus on physical, mental, and social well-being despite a given disease or condition. We are committed to presentations based on sound research and non-commercial in nature. To effectively meet the needs of the SCOV community, we need to hear what topics would be the most helpful to you. Please email your thoughts and requests to the chair. AFC Advisory Committee

Chair Sharon Hertle 818-2558 First Wednesday, WC1, 11:30 AM www.afc@suncityorovalley.com

Our SCOV pools are heavily used. While it is not possible to add detailed signs to tell everyone all the guidelines at every pool, a few conventions observed by everyone can go a long way towards making lap swimming and exercising in the pool more pleasant and efficient for everyone. First, please remember to sign up for swim lanes and understand that swim lanes need to be shared. Second, stay constantly aware of other swimmers or exercisers and don’t get in their way. Third, if you need a rest break or want to talk, please don’t stop in the middle of a lane. Fourth, learn common lap swimming techniques and etiquette which can be researched on-line. Finally, remember that lap swimming, aqua-jogging and aqua-class activities are all valid forms of exercise, and by checking the pool schedule, you will know the times that are designated for your favorite pool activity.

As you already know our new paint colors have been approved and homeowners are able to begin using these colors. I’m anxious to see the community come alive as the new colors are used. At this time I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Del Peterson and his team Carolyn Corwin, Dick Cook, Lynn Pruitt, Dawn Baker and Sharon Held for a job well done. In addition, Veronica Coffey from Dunn Edwards has contributed numerous hours and supplies, providing the team with the resources they needed to be successful. This will be my last ARC article, as in June I will be passing the baton to Lou Gard who will be the next Chairman of the ARC. We have accomplished so much this year, and I know this is only the beginning of the changes. I would also like to thank John Njaa and Terry Mc Fadden for their years of service on the ARC as they too will be leaving the Committee June 1. It has been a pleasure working with you these past four years. Consumer Referral

CORRECTION on Uneven Sidewalks

A recent reminder about maintaining our sidewalks stated that “We each own the sidewalk adjacent to our home, so it is the responsibility of the homeowner to have it repaired.” We do not own our sidewalks. The Town of Oro Valley owns the sidewalks. However, Town Code 7-5-10 says that “the owner of property immediately abutting a sidewalk is responsible for maintaining that sidewalk in good order and repair.”

As this article was being written, the LRPC was preparing to present its design proposal for The Café and Lounge Project to residents and to the Board. By the time you read this, we hope the Board will have approved the project and formed an Implementation Task Force to carry it to completion. The LRPC will have one more meeting, May 18, before adjourning for the summer. We anticipate next year’s LRPC will work on one remaining ad hoc project, updating the Activity Center, and then begin updating the 2014 Five-Year Plan as part of the LRPC’s charter to maintain a fluid and evolving long range plan. Heidi Kannengeiser Check out the Gift shop for the arrival of new items as you stop in for a cool respite on a hot day. Featured artists this month are Joanne Wickberg and Heidi Kannengeiser. After taking classes in watercolor, pastels and oriental brush painting, Jo decided to get back into making cards, concentrating on pop-up cards. On opening the card, flowers may pop up or maybe a big birthday cake, a golf bag or an animal character. She also makes smaller cards with coordinating subject matter, putting three together to make one packet for sale. Heidi combines her silversmith talents with specially selected stones and beads to fashion her jewelry. Following a long process of cutting from large hunks of stones, she painstakingly sands the piece until only a final polishing releases the inner beauty of the stone to be set. Torch firing and soldering complete a setting unique to each finished stone. Government Affairs

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 It’s On the Way

Summer is on the way, and we bid farewell to those who leave our community for the coming hot months ahead. Remember to have someone look after your home and yard while you are gone for the hot summer months, even if it is only for part of the summer. A messy yard is an indication that you are gone and puts your home and belongings in a possibly unsafe situation. During our summer monsoon season, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible. With the upcoming summer storms, there are times when it’s necessary to reach homeowners due to roof tile damage and/or trees down. Don’t forget to leave your summer address, phone number, and current email address with Administration should someone need to contact you. Enjoy your summer knowing that your community and home here will look just as nice when you return as when you left.

May 2014 Annual Mailing

May is the month the annual mailing occurs. If you leave for the summer, please make sure you have come into the Administration Office and fill out the change of address form. No changes will be made to your address without this form being completed. Additionally, you may need to contact the Post Office. If you created a forwarding order with the Post Office and it’s over a year old, it will not work. Make sure the Post Office has your correct mailing information on file. In this year’s mailing there will be a report on the financial position of the Association from the current fiscal year and for the coming year. It will include the budget for the 20152016 year and a report from the Treasurer, Susan Jakosa. The General Manager will provide you with information about the Association including the options for dues payments. There are credit card payment options including Visa. The Association uses a payment collection service to receive and post payments. When payments are received, this service sends a file to the Association which is digitally inputted into the Association software and applies the payment to your account. This is an accurate and time-saving feature, so please consider mailing your payment along with the payment coupon to the Phoenix P.O. Box. Last, but certainly not least, is an explanation of our new golf passes, products and a golf rate card. We encourage you to take advantage of the many great opportunities to get out and enjoy The Views Golf Club. If you haven’t played before, come see the Pro Shop staff, and they’ll get you started with a lesson. If you love to be outside and active, consider signing up for a class, taking a private lesson or hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range. There are special events like the Hit and Giggle, so sign up in the Pro Shop for the next event. There are four golf clubs at The Views Golf Course, men and women’s 9 and 18-hole, and they have a great time playing golf and socializing. Get involved in one of these clubs. There are special discounts for first-time pass purchasers. See page 4 of this Tipster or the flyer in the annual mailing for pricing and details.

Fixed Income or Budget?

Many times we hear residents state they are on fixed incomes. The economy has residents making changes to their spending and the way they do things. While the residents struggle to make changes, the Department Managers have budgets. This means some changes must be made to the way things have been done in the past. All department managers worked hard this year to cut the amount of money that would be needed to run their departments, so that homeowner dues would not be raised. Just as you continue to make changes to your personal ways of spending and doing things, because prices are rising, so will the operations of the Association. We hope that you will take this into consideration when an Association change takes place that might affect a facility, your club, group or you. Communications Coordinator - Chris Richard

Writing Your Monthly Article - Photo Contest

As the Editor of the Tipster I often see some folks have not checked the Tipster Article Standards before writing their monthly article. A word about standards. Most publications have standards. The purpose of standards is for the sake of continuity. This month I’d like to talk about the standards for stating money and time. If your club is meeting at 7 PM, Activity Center/Hohokam then you should state it as 7 PM not 7:00 in the evening. The same would be true for morning let’s say it is 10:30 AM, note there are no periods in AM and it is capitalized just as PM is in the example above. For stating your annual dues are $5. It would be $5 not $5.00. Please visit the Tipster page online at www.scovaz.com, hold your cursor over News & Info, a drop down appears scroll to Tipster Newsletter, when the Tipster page opens click on Article Standards and print out your own copy of the Tipster Article Standards. Review them before you write your article. This month we kick off the annual Community Phone Directory Photo Contest. If you have a great photo or two taken here in the community you’d like to have considered for the contest and would be willing to give the Community permission to use your photo, we’d like to hear from you. Please send your photo using our website News & Info, Photo Contest. Community Services - Katy Mosier

What is Dehydration?

Dehydration is when our body loses more fluid than we take in. It can happen quickly and it can be fatal. Generally, the Institute of Medicine recommends a daily total water intake of 15 cups for men and 11 cups for women. Other factors such as age, weight, lifestyle and physical condition also play a large part. Healthy hydration is drinking enough water for your personal, health and lifestyle profiles. We live in a warm climate, so drink up. Water is portable. Carry small bottles with you wherever you go.

Association-Sponsored Fitness Classes

Purchase a fitness punch card at the Welcome Center/Administration Office, $20/10 classes or purchase an Annual Fitness Class Pass on sale now for $300. You may use these cards for all SCOV-sponsored fitness classes. The punch cards can also be used for your guests. There is a $3 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card or annual card.

Please stop by the golf shop and pick up a Divot newsletter to keep you advised of any possible changes. Just a reminder that residents will receive 15% off merchandise in the Pro Shop, on all items except golf balls, equipment and sale items. Superintendent - Michael Kropf There has been a lot of discussion lately about pace of play on the golf course. Golf has become less popular as a sport because it takes several hours to play a round of golf. If the pace of play on a particular day is very slow, then people get frustrated and leave with a bad impression of the golf course. To encourage more people to play our golf course and leave with a positive experience many ideas are being discussed to increase the pace of play. The rule on our golf course is that golf carts enter and exit the fairways at 90 degrees from the cart path. The rule doesn’t state that the golf carts enter and exit the fairways at 90 degrees from the roughs. Most golfers don’t want to take the time to hit their shot and drive all the way back to the cart path to advance toward their next shot, so they drive the fairway edge and then down the entire length of the hole staying in the roughs. This causes the roughs to get compacted down leaving unfavorable playing conditions as the winter months progress. To alleviate both the problem of slow pace of play and compacted roughs the best solution is to allow carts to enter the fairway at 90 degrees from the cart path and stay in the fairway until the hole is finished and the carts exit back to the cart path. This will speed up a round of golf and help the roughs throughout the winter. Golf Advisory

Chair Janet Kimble 825-3172 First Wednesday, 2 PM, WC3

It’s that time of the year to switch your seed mix over to just sand until over seeding in the fall. The fairways and tee-off-boxes will be mowed lower to help the sunlight reach the new Bermuda grass. Deeper tines will be used for aerification in the fairways. This will allow water, nutri-

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

ents and sunlight penetration to help the new grass send out new roots. The same chemicals used last year will be applied mid April to start eliminating ryegrass. When driving to your ball hit in the fairway either stay in the fairway and only exit once or use the 90-degree method back to the cart path. Mike has requested all golfers to stay off the rough grass as much as possible during early growing season because of new growth. A good pace of play makes all golfers smile. Mary Anne Cooper Thrives On Challenges

by John Njaa It’s not unusual for ladies to attend Don Jovag’s woodworking classes. We wish more would like Mary Anne Cooper did recently. What came as a surprise was Mary Anne asking Don to teach her how to make segmented bowls as her first project. Making bowls is a complex task and not a normal choice for a beginning woodworker, but Don, an author of a book on making bowls, agreed. Don said, “You don’t say no to Mary Anne.” Don and Mary Anne were well into the project when Don learned that Mary Anne Cooper is 100 years old. If you talk with Mary Anne for a little while, you learn why she picked segmented bowls as a project. She picked it because it is hard – a challenge. It’s complex and requires mental and physical skill. Mary Anne’s philosophy is the mind should determine what the body can do, not the other way around. The mind needs to be challenged. One needs discipline and conviction to succeed. Mary Anne is charming and engaging, but you can sense the toughness that lies just beneath which accounts for her many accomplishments to this day. Mary Anne earned her PhD in environmental conservation from Michigan State University in 1969. She worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and other governmental agencies until she retired to Port Moody, British Columbia to be near her daughter. In retirement, she didn’t rest and joined and led the efforts to preserve and develop a heritage site in Port Moody, something in which she is still involved. Her efforts there have not gone unnoticed. Port Moody and British Columbia have shown their appreciation on multiple occasions. On her 100th birthday, they renamed a street in her honor. First Avenue became Mary Anne Cooper Way. A headline in a the local newspaper there said “Cooper, 100, gets her Way.” Mary Anne lives here during the winter. Her daughter and son-in-law, Corinna and David Goodman, live here as well. She says she loves Sun City Oro Valley because there are so many challenges and the people are wonderful.

Here we are at the end of our season, and we’re still painting with gusto in our Art Studio. During April we participated in a superb show on the walls of our Activity Center. May is departure month for many of our artists, but those who stay for the summer enjoy the cool studio and spend more time painting and chatting about art happenings in the local area. We are a group of casual but dedicated artists who just plain enjoy what we do and create. If you’re commiserating regarding how to spend your creative time this summer season, we have the answer for you. Come check us out on Wednesdays.

At our May meeting we will discuss George Washington’s Secret Six, by Brian Kilmeade. When General George Washington beat a hasty retreat from New York City in August 1776, many thought the American Revolution might soon be over. Instead, Washington rallied; thanks in large part to a little-known, top-secret group called the Culper Spy Ring. Washington realized that he couldn’t beat the British with military might, so he recruited a sophisticated and deeply secretive intelligence network to infiltrate New York. So carefully guarded were the members’ identities, that one spy’s name was not uncovered until the twentieth century. Bowling League - Pathfinders

Pres. Joan Kelley 734-255-9644 September-May First Thursday, 1 PM, Artisan Center/Pottery This month continues the migration of seasonal residents back to their summer retreats. The frenetic pace of the high season turns to quieter times in this busy club, and the kilns will get more rest in anticipation of our members returning in the fall. It has been a season full of creativity with new faces delighting in the feel of squishy mud and in the beauty of the creations emerging from the fires. More experienced potters have stepped up to teach skills and encourage new members as they discover how to make their own beauties or how to translate ideas into finished product. Members whistle, sing, tell jokes and simply enjoy the social atmosphere we treasure within the group, while slinging mud along the way. To all who leave, you will be missed. To those who stay, thanks for keeping the place going. No club meetings June through August.

Checklist For Leaving In The Summer • Let the Association know how to reach you in case of storm damage, waterline break or other emergency. • To stop delivery of the Explorer call 797-4384. • Fill out a DARK HOUSE form with the Oro Valley Police Department to have your home checked. • Schedule a landscaper to address monsoon weeds and yard upkeep while you are away. • Close your garage door and turn off power to your garage door opener. • Put lights on a timer. We especially invite women who are interested in learning about firearms safety and self-protection to attend. People are frequently interested in learning the laws and regulations about carrying a gun and what is required to obtain an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Club members are encouraged to bring any new or interesting guns/accessories to the meeting for people to see or any guns they want to sell/trade. At some meetings we have guest speakers. The Joseph Pilates system of exercises has never been in such high demand. His exercises have been around now for 40 years. Fortunately, SCOV offers the Joseph Pilates classes here twice per week. People ask, “Can the benefits of this Pilates method, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a definite “yes.” Additional benefits you’ll see from taking our group mat classes will include better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. We have two instructors who are both very experienced in the Joseph Pilates system. The cost is only $8/class and the annual club dues are $20 pp. Please feel free to stop by and watch one of our classes. Call Mary Ayers.

Brenda Hawkins, Maria Welch, Al Womac and Judy Cornelius recently trained over 60 people. Check the court bulletin board for summer trainers and court hours. Our first courtyard sale managed by Brenda Hawkins was successful. Almost $800 was raised for charity. Thanks to donators and all that helped. Brenda has her garage back. Ladder play continues with 42 players participating. As of April 1 the Left to right, front row: Joan Ellen Jones, Judy leaders were Roy Mc- Cornelius, Brenda Hawikins. Back row: Dan Gechaen, Craig Jones, Gartner, Al Womac. All ladder players. Nancy Goodhue and Maria Welch. Al Womac initiated evening play with nine players. It quickly ballooned to more than 30 players. Al assigned skill levels and the three best lighted courts are available to all. Lyn Mason developed electronic court scheduling and revised the Pickleball webpage. Pickleball, a great sport, provides a chance to laugh, meet terrific people and is a source of pride for our club and community. Brenda Hawkins managed our going-away party with about 100 attending a fabulous Mexican Fiesta. What fun. Pinochle

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Monday, 9:30-11:30 AM, Welcome Center/WC1

We are never too old to learn from the young and vice versa. Here are two new poets worth hearing. Manifesto or Ars Poetica #2 by Krista Franklin opens with a shout, “Give me the night, you beasts hissing over the face of this dead woman...To those who would sleep through the wounds they inflict on others, I offer pain to help them awaken...I am the queen of sleight of hand wandering the forest of motives...I am a weapon. I believe in hoodoo, voodooo, root workers...I believe in the ghosts of 60 million or more black bones disintegrating at the bottom of the Atlantic...” Kristiana Rae Colon’s A Remix for Remembrance has an unmistakably modern musicality, “...Speak away the limits to heights of your existence/Be a witness, be a record, be a testament, a triumph/Set your poems flying in the glitter of the planets/Feed open mouths with truth, the truth is we are famished/ The Universe is starving for the symphonies you play...”

This month we are featuring our Wallyball Team. This Wally Ball Club plays a competitive, fast paced, high energy game. If you’re interested in playing, please stop by any Tuesday or Friday at 12:45 PM to talk to the members and to see how we play. That is when we pick our teams and set up the net. Play starts at 1 PM, sometimes earlier. Women and Money

VP Lauren Thompson 520-306-9750 laurencoyote@aol.com First Wednesday, 3:30-5 PM, Catalina Vista We are riding high after our very successful show Back to the Present which we presented in two sold out performances at the end of March. Thirty-two residents, including cast and crew, participated in this hilarious comparison of TV programs and commercials from the 50’s and the present day. A new slate of officers was elected at our annual cast party and meeting. We are now looking towards our production March 2016. We welcome anyone with theatre interests to please contact us for more information. Come play with us.

Woodworking

Pres. John Njaa 825-5486 Membership Lauren Strassburg 338-2568 Next meeting, May 20, 1:30 PM, Desert Oasis/Saguaro www.scovwoodworkingclub.com

Signing up for woodshop monitor duty on the paper calendars in the shop will soon be a thing of the past. It will be replaced by an online sign-up system now being tested. This system will allow monitors to sign up and edit their sign-ups from home or anywhere they can access the internet. Anyone in the club will be able to access it to see if a monitor will be on duty when use of the shop is planned. There is a tutorial for monitors and a link to access the system under the monitors tab in the club website. There are still a few members who have not paid 2015 dues. If you are one of those, stop by the shop now and drop off your check. Your membership is in jeopardy if you don’t do this very soon. Writers Club

Paul Mercer 333- 3490 pawmerc@gmail.com Second and Fourth Friday, 1-3 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

The Writers Club offers you an outlet to express your thoughts about a variety of subjects in writing, then read them to a room full of your peers. Sounds daunting, doesn’t it? It is actually a lot of fun because your peers are just like you: intelligent and kind. So don’t let the fear of a scathing retort hold you back from attending. The critiques usually lead to the most interesting conversations. Plan to attend and participate. There are no dues. Reservations are not needed; just show up. Oh, you might want to bring a pen and paper to jot down some ideas you may come up with during the meeting. Yoga

YOTO provides students in the greater Tucson area with financial assistance, basic needs and guidance as they work to obtain their high school diplomas. Since 1986, with community contributions and support, YOTO has assisted over 15,000 students in achieving their educational and personal goals: to graduate from high school and become self-sufficient, productive adults within their communities. Watch for details on how you can be a part of community efforts to invest in Tucson’s future. Any way in which you choose to support the mission, whether by donating time, talent, money, back to school supplies or attending any of the fundraising opportunities, is greatly appreciated and makes a difference in the lives and futures of the students YOTO serves.

Everything from the home listings that were sent to us over the Internet to all the little things like interesting things to do and see in the Tucson area made us feel welcome and that she was interested in helping us relocate. Wilda went above and beyond with us, never flinching when we requested anything. Wilda was always there for us, cool, calm, serene. She was outstanding.
