Association News From The Board of Directors

SCVCAI Board of Directors Newsletter A bimonthly newsletter by Director Debra Arrett about the activities and items discussed by the BOD is available by ListServ. To sign up, go to www.suncity-vistoso. com, hold your mouse over “News and Information” click on “In the Know”, put in your email address and click on “submit” button. Select any of the notifications you would like to receive and click on the “submit” button. For those who do not have access to a computer, a copy is available for reading in the library. Going Green Pays Off by Jack Evert

Does “Going Green” make you feel good all over even though deep down you really don’t believe that it is worth it? Well, I have data for you that will let you continue to feel good and KNOW that it is worth it. Two examples: Several years ago the Properties Committee, one of our many strong, contributing committees, came to the Board with a proposal to use the Vistoso Center as a demonstration site for reducing energy use. They wanted to replace all air conditioners and lighting with high efficiency units and install motion-activated lights in low-use rooms so they would not be needlessly lighted. Vistoso Center was the best choice for this demonstration because it is built such that its energy usage can be uniquely measured. Results show that the kilowatt hours of electricity used over the last year dropped by 33%, better than the Properties Committee had projected. This converts to a cost reduction of nearly $4,000/yr, and as prices rise, as they surely will, the savings will go even higher. Similar savings occurred with water usage on Association common areas not including the golf course. By removing the cypress trees along Rancho Vistoso Blvd., removing grass in a number of areas, and other water reduction programs, water costs have been reduced from $46,000 in ’06-’07 to $29,000 last year, even while the cost per gallon increased 11.2%. These are gifts that keep on giving. The changes that delivered these improvements are structural and will benefit our community indefinitely. And it should make you feel good all over.

Thanksgiving Hours For Facilities Thursday, November 25 The Sports Complex will be open 5 AM-5 PM Desert Oasis, Catalina Vista and Social Hall will be closed for the day and evening. Administration and the Library will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, November 26. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, November 2010

Bob Mariani, General Manager What Do You Expect? by Bob Mariani

Our residents choose to live in Sun City Vistoso for various reasons. Some of you moved here because of the views, some for the area, some for the tennis courts, some for the many clubs and some for various other reasons. Although many of you expect to have and be able to enjoy these many features and amenities, there are a few things I think all of you expect as a resident of this community. In no special order, I am confident all residents expect to live in a safe community, you expect to live in an attractive community, and you expect to live in a community that receives at minimum, adequate services and treatment from the town, county and state governments. It is evident that SCV fares well in all of these areas. Yet diligent oversight and involvement is needed in order to maintain and improve the community’s safety, aesthetics and governmental relationships. One way you can assist in fulfilling your expectations is to become involved in the committees that deal with these three very important areas. The committees I am referring to are the Posse, Landscape and Government Affairs Committees. Participation in these organizations demands only the amount of time you wish to dedicate; it may be a couple of hours a month or it could be a day or two depending on your desires. One shift a month during the evening is a huge help to the Posse. Working with a team to determine the future of the common area landscaping and view polices will fulfill needs in the Landscape Committee. A small amount of time arranging a presentation by a Town Council member or County Supervisor will bring greater knowledge to our residents and a stronger relationship with our local governments so that SCV gets the attention it deserves. Don’t get me wrong. All of our committees want and need help and our community cannot survive as it exists now without the committee structure and a high level of participation. However, the three committees noted above are very important to our community and are not getting the attention and participation they deserve, particularly in the summer months. It’s easy to express your desire to join these or any committee by simply stopping by the Vistoso Center and filling out a committee application form or you can complete a form on-line at www.suncity-vistoso.com.

The role of ARC (Architectural Review Committee) is to help maintain the architectural character and aesthetic harmony of Sun City Vistoso. The ARC implements this by meeting bimonthly to review submittals by homeowners requesting exterior changes to their lots and houses. The committee also reviews and studies the possible changes that may occur from new technologies and from changes that may arise as our houses and facilities change over time. In addition, the ARC assists and provides support for task-based, asneeds-arise committees, such as the Green Energy, Neighborhood Pride, and Landscape Committees. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, November 2010

We hope you had the time to stop by the Arts and Crafts Festival last month. From all accounts it was a success. Talking about success, that would be our Artists of the Month, Ray and Donna Williard. They are happily celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. You can look in the ceramic room window and see them working side by side. I don’t have enough space to list all Donna’s ceramic creations. You’ll have to come down to our center front window and see for yourself. Ray does have a specialty. If you are looking for the perfect frog or lizard, check with Ray. You’ll probably see a frog sitting next to Donna’s lovely violet pot. There are two things to remember in November. Monday, November 8, is Monday Madness, and Friday-Sunday, November 26-28, is the Holiday Open House. The shop will be open Friday and Saturday, 9 AM-4 PM and Sunday, 1-4 PM. We’ll have that great raffle everyone will love. Also, the shop will be open on Sundays from 1-4 PM until Christmas. Government Affairs Chair Judy Hale 395-5866 Second Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

Look for the flyer in this month’s Tipster for some interesting events/presentations from the Government Affairs Committee for November. We’ll get to know our Oro Valley Town Manager, Jerene Watson. She will be with us, as well as Mary Snider from the Oro Valley Town Council; also information on volunteerism, where to go, and what’s available. Look for dates and time in the flyer. In the meantime the GAC is always looking for new members. Please call to inquire.

We do not say thank you often enough to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. With Thanksgiving at the end of this month, our committee would like to say thanks to the homeowners who work to keep their properties in compliance with the governing documents. We especially appreciate and thank those who perhaps are not here every month of the year. Neighborhood Pride has been a viable and hardworking volunteer committee for five years this month, and the hard work and countless hours from our members have helped to make Sun City Vistoso a beautiful place in which to live. Walking or driving through our community, one can’t help but feel pride in living here and enjoying life as it’s meant to be. We sincerely thank you and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Total sold in 2009 - 108 Library

Once a year we like to remind residents of things to do and not do regarding donations to the library. Please do not bring us anything that is very old, yellowed, moldy, stained with food, beverage or waterlogged. We don’t have room to store these items nor do we have any way to sell or donate them to others. When you are contemplating donating items, think about whether you would buy it in this condition. Do bring: • Hardcover books in good condition with a copyright date no earlier than 2000 with some exceptions made for tabletop books such as art, travel, cook books, etc. • Videos - on DVD or Blu-ray only - no VCR tapes. • Audios - on CD only - no tapes. • Paperback books in good condition. • Magazines for current month, four issues, if published weekly or three issues if monthly. • Puzzles in good condition with no missing pieces. • Cash donations for special purchases for memorials or special celebrations or just because you want to sup port the library. We have found various pieces of jewelry in the library. If you can describe it and we have it, it will be yours. See Carol. Friends of the SCV Library

A reminder for residents returning to Sun City Vistoso that now is the time to renew your membership in the Friends of the Library if you have not already done so. Welcome New Neighbors Unit# Name From 7 Douglas and Diana Mills Oro Valley, AZ 17 Gabrielle Harvey Oro Valley, AZ 3A Chris and Carol Clark Tucson, AZ 2 Gretchen Poellot St. Louis, MO Recreation and Fitness, Lonnie Davis Is it true lifting weights causes women to bulk up?

While on a weight lifting program, the right hormones (testosterone) are necessary in order to bulk up. Women’s testosterone levels are much lower than men’s, so in most cases, they are not capable of building large muscles. In fact, since muscle takes up less room than fat, women tend to lose inches when they strength train. So in addition to the physical benefits (increased metabolism, decreased risk of osteoporosis, increased strength), strength training will help you slim down too! Women, in fact, are more likely to tone up from strength training rather than bulk up. Research shows that women can add up to 30% lean muscle and end up looking thinner, feeling stronger and being firmer. Association-Sponsored Fitness: Purchase a punch card from the receptionist in the Administration Office, $10/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Vistoso-sponsored fitness classes. Golf Kim Griggs, Head Golf Professional

Now that overseeding is complete and the course has been marked, we are ready for an awesome season. A special thank you to Preston Sheriff for marking the yardages on the cart paths again this year. It is a big help and we do appreciate it. Lessons are available from Rick Sample or myself. We are both PGA members and our rates are $40/half hour and $55/45 minutes. We also offer packages, so please call us for more information. Please stop by the Pro Shop and see our blowout prices on golf clubs. We also have a sale table with Sun City Vistoso products. The logo has not changed, just the course name. I have purchased new hat clips and other miscellaneous items with The Views Golf Club on them. Walkers, please abide by the walking signs that are provided for you on the golf course. We want you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and at the same time not get hit by a golf ball. Reminder: If you have been using a flag during the Cart Path Only phase of overseeding please make sure to return it to the Pro Shop. The Pro Shop will close Thursday, November 25, Thanksgiving at 1 PM. Happy Turkey Day to all. Michael Kropf, Superintendent

This year the overseeding process was much different than previous years. The condition of the fairways has continued to decline during the months of June and July, and the only way to improve the condition was to make several changes. The first major change was the par 3 fairways that were not overseeded this year. The greens and tees were still overseeded like the rest of the golf course, but these small fairways are going to be rested this winter. The best way to improve the condition of the Bermuda grass is to not overseed at all. Skipping these four holes will start the rotation of skipping two holes on each nine for the next several years. Hopefully, this compromise will allow the golf course to become healthier and at the same time, still having overseeded fairways for the winter golfers. Other changes to the process are reducing the seed rate and inflicting less damage on the Bermuda grass. These changes are for the long-term benefit of the Bermuda grass. However, a lower seed rate combined with less damage to the Bermuda grass gives a false perception of the condition of the fairways. The Bermuda grass is still very green so from a distance the fairways look amazing, but in reality the fairways are not as thick as previous winters. With the use of growth regulators and fertilizers the fairways should fill in nicely. The goal is to provide nice fairways for the winter months, and still have lots of Bermuda grass for June and July.

Golf Advisory Jerry Haddock 825-1058 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache Private Golf Courses

Most private golf courses now permit outside play because of the decrease in memberships. We face the same problem, so we elected to become semiprivate and opened our course to nonresidents. The few private courses who have not changed have made drastic changes in lowering their price to purchase a membership, their monthly golf fees, and some have lowered their monthly requirement on food purchases. What they cannot afford to do is eliminate assessments. All private courses bill their members if the expenses to operate the golf course are higher than their income. That usually costs their members thousands of additional dollars. Here, as the number of resident players declined, it was decided to permit nonresident play. Some still disagree, but by doing so the additional revenue enabled us to keep the cost of playing golf down. Golfers here enjoy low golf fees,no minimum food purchases in the Café, and no yearly assessments. Without outside participation in the future some of that will have to change. Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club Pres. Jerry Rickard 825-7175 Membership Jerry Haddock 825-1058 Play: Wednesdays

Renewed excitement is planned for the 2010-2011 season. Mark your calendars for our major events: President’s Cup Wednesday-Wednesday, November 10-17; Governor’s Cup, January; Club Championship, March. The Member/Guest is scheduled for Wednesday-Thursday, April 13-14, so get your partner now for one of the most fun-filled events of the year. This season we will introduce the The Views Cup, a season-long event, beginning November 3 and patterned after the FedX Cup. It is spearheaded by Preston Sheriff and offers an event in which all members can participate. Full details of The Views Cup are available in the Pro Shop. This year we would like to have our current club members become pro-active in getting their friends and neighbors who are golfers, but not members of our club, interested joining us. Explain to them the fun and camaraderie which our club generates and invite them to join. Congratulations to Bob Howe and Gene McCullagh on their Holes-In-One in September. The next bash will be on December 1 and tickets will be on sale on the patio two weeks before the event.

Rachel Zucker calls writing poetry an act of translating experience into language. Her concept of revision differs from the usual process of editing. She asks the writer to further translate the original experience or the experience as depicted in the poem, to view it from a new perspective. Taking tips from teachers of poetry is one of our recent efforts at self-improvement. During our weekly workshops we read and discuss our poems, including comments on content, style, form, language, meaning and title. We may provide a prompt (title, subject, form) for the following week. Resident poets are welcome to join us. Annual dues, payable to the SCV Writers Club, are $5 pp.
