Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOVCA Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Fitness Center Design Firm by Dick Brammell The Fitness Center Committee selected the architectural firm, STG Design. If you attended their community presentation or watched via the online link, I believe you will agree that the committee made an excellent selection. If you have not had the opportunity to review the meeting or read about STG Design, I would like to give you my observations and tell you about them. The firm has had an office in Tucson for many years in addition to offices in other parts of the U.S. and provides architectural services for Del Webb/Pulte. They were the original architects for our Sun City development, so they are quite familiar with all of our buildings. As a firm they bring a wealth of fitness center knowledge to the table. This comes from working on current Del Webb/Pulte fitness centers along with others. During their presentation they interacted with everyone in an open and respectful manner, were able to address concerns/questions, and appeared to be open to suggestions and comments. They were very up front about the costs for different options. Go online and watch their presentation to the community. I believe you will agree they are very knowledgeable and the Fitness Center Committee made an excellent choice.

Sun City Oro Valley Audit After several sessions of review by DeVries CPAS over the past few months, the audit of the Association’s financial statements has been completed. A financial audit, or more accurately, an audit of financial statements, is the verification of the financial statements of a legal entity, with a view to express an audit opinion. The audit opinion is intended to provide reasonable assurance that the financial statements are presented fairly, in all material respects, and/or give a true and fair view in accordance with the financial reporting framework Every year in October, the audit, which is required by the Association’s governing documents, is presented to the Finance and Budget Committee. The Committee discusses the audit report and, if the report is deemed to be accurate, makes a recommendation to the Board to accept the audited statements. The CPA then reviews the audit with the Board and the Board accepts the audited statements at the October Board Meeting. This year as with the past several years, the financial statements were found to present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Association and was in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States. In addition to the audit of the financial statements indicating that the Association’s financial record keeping is in order, I was somewhat surprised to learn that the CPA firm did not issue a management letter. The management letter essentially outlines deficiencies in internal controls. At times these are minor issues yet can also be material issues. During the few decades I have managed associations, I don’t recall not getting a management letter outlining some kind of issue. However, in the case of the 2011-2012 financial audit, I’m very pleased to note that no deficiency of any kind was found by the auditing firm. As a result, I congratulate our Controller, Randy Trenary, and our staff in all departments for closely following the numerous accounting procedures that are required. I am pleased and hope you are comforted to know that the SCOV staff is keeping the Association’s financial matters in order.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Oro Valley. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans, which attract bees and may become a hazard. CAC volunteers delivered their second load of cans for the fiscal year, 400 pounds which netted $276. This brings the year-to-date total income from cans to $556. November is a busy month at the Loan Room. There are many requests for extra beds, tables and chairs, and children’s items for the many guests who want to spend Thanksgiving in our warm climate. Come in or call to make your reservations. Information for calling for reservations is on the inside of the front cover of the Tipster. The Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM.

The FCC (Fitness Center Committee) held very productive meetings in October. Six different plans, four November 2012, Sun City Oro Valley Tipster

from STG Design and two from FCC members were considered. The most critical issue was the discussion of whether or not the locker rooms should be moved which was depicted in two of the plans. An important point that the architects made was if the locker rooms are left in the current location, ADA regulations will require more room for toilets and showers; therefore, there would have to be a reduction in these facilities if the locker rooms were left in the current footprint. After considerable discussion about this issue, all of the committee members in attendance agreed that the locker rooms should be moved. The Gift Shop was shocked to learn that our co-chair, Barbara Farr, passed away in September. This month our Artist of the Month window is dedicated to Barbara and her husband, Len. Barbara spent many hours working in Barbara Farr and husband Len. the shop as well as making beautiful quilted wall hangings, embroidered book marks and lap quilts. Len not only made wooden tops, candle holders and Christmas ornaments, he has been very helpful in and around the Gift Shop. Please stop by and check out their items in the center front window. Sincere Thanks Not often enough do we say thank you to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, a thank you would be appropriate. With Thanksgiving nearing, there is no better time to say thanks to the homeowners who keep their properties in compliance with the governing documents. We especially appreciate and thank those who perhaps are not here every month of the year. The hard work and countless hours of time from our committee members have helped to make Sun City Oro Valley a beautiful place in which to live. When a Posse patrol sees flashing entryway lights on a house, they attempt to call the resident. We find it’s not unusual for the resident to be unaware their lights are flashing, and many do not know how to control the light. This feature is controlled by the middle position of the three position (On/ Flash/Off) entryway light switch. Oro Valley Police says there is no longer a need for the feature and it often becomes a nuisance. Tipster Editorial Chair Marge Roetzel 825-9719 Anticipated Tipster delivery of the December issue, Friday, December 28. Tipster Editorial meeting Wednesday, November 14, 9 AM, Social Hall/Hopi.

The Monthly Process of Creating a Tipster Edition Tipster editor, Chris Richard, receives approximately 250 submissions for each Tipster from various submitters. The book can not just add a page, and must increase by four pages in the printing process. It runs about 36 pages in length in summer to 48 pages in winter. Therefore length of articles is critical. The first draft is distributed to editors who are assigned in two-person teams. Each team is assigned a section of the book to edit, making sure everything conforms to the Article Standards and placement order. The editors check days, dates, phone numbers and spelling. Each team has a yellow draft copy of their section; all corrections are marked on that yellow draft. The article submitter is contacted if significant changes are made. One editor per edition is assigned to make sure all articles are in the correct place. Chris and the editors meet and review each section, discussing problems found and changes made. From the first draft yellow copies, Chris makes all corrections indicated by the editors. The second draft is given to two assigned editors for a final review, to mark corrections and return to Chris who then makes the final corrections indicated and she also completes all ads. It is now ready to be sent to the printer. Prior to the magazine’s delivery to the community, Chris puts the magazine online. A Listserv notice is sent out that it is available online. The Tipster Editorial Committee and all of SCOV are very proud of our monthly publication. Thanks to Editor Chris Richard it is extremely professional in its design and use of color. Short URL We now have a shorter, easier to use URL! That may not be too exciting for you, but I’m excited about it. You may be asking what is a URL? In computing, a URL (uniform resource locator) is a specific character string that constitutes a reference to an Internet resource. You would most likely recognize our URL as www.suncityorovalley.com. Our current URL is 24 characters long! We have a long name, four words plus the www. and .com. It takes a while to type it in the browser. A point could be made that it might be a deterrent when marketing our community to the outside word for someone to have to type that long name. So we’ve purchased a shorter URL, www.scovaz.com! OK, it’s not that exciting, but it is the small things that count, right? We’ll start using this URL to direct traffic to our website. When our new, shorter name is typed into a browser, users will be forwarded (another cool techy term) to our larger domain name. That’s what they’ll see in their browser. Give it a try! Recently I was making a purchase for the Association at a local store while I was wearing my work name badge. The clerk at the checkout noticed it and stated “Oh, you work at Sun City; my husband and I love to eat at your Café and we can see all that your residents have there”. I told her that I also lived in the community. Her next statement really surprised me. She stated, “You are so lucky to live there. My husband and I wish and hope that someday we can move there.” Wow, the thought that I was living somewhere that some people dreamed of really moved me. I wondered how many of us really take the time to think about how lucky we all are. Yes we have different ideas about things in the community, but in general, from the outside looking in, we live in a community that some people wish they could experience. Maybe at your Thanksgiving table you might want to count living in SCOV and the friends we have made here as something for which to be thankful. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. 1. All RVs shall be registered with SCOV by the resident owner at the SCOV Administration office. Each registered RV shall be identified with a serial numbered sticker, applied to the left rear side of the RV so as to be readily visible from the street. Each individual vehicle or component such as trailer or camper shell will require a separate registration. Failure to display the registration sticker will be an immediate violation (recorded, dated and mailed) and subject to the SCOV fine schedule. The registration shall be a onetime act, effective for the duration of the member’s residence in Sun City Oro Valley. 2. Each resident owner of an RV will be provided with and is required to maintain a Parking Log for each Registered RV. A Parking Log entry is required for each separate parking occurrence. The Parking Log shall be placed in the front window or side entrance door of the RV. The Parking Log shall contain, as a minimum, the RV Registration Serial Number, date and time the RV was parked at the residence, date and time the RV left the residence parking place and the resident’s signature after each entry. 3. In any calendar month RV parking will be limited to a total of 72 hours, cumulative, and only for purposes of cleaning, loading or unloading and short term parking. An RV may be parked only in designated parking areas member driveway exception: parking within a resident’s garage is permissible at all times. Note: Oro Valley Town Code prohibits occupancy of a vehicle on the street overnight. State of Arizona Statute prohibits parking an unattended vehicle on the street for more than 48 hours. 4. Nonresident’s RV’s may not be parked longer than six consecutive hours within Sun City, and in no case overnight between the hours of 12 midnight and 6 AM, except in a designated area when registered and a waiver signed with the Association. Such parking is limited to 72 hours and in no case shall such vehicle be occupied overnight.

The more you exercise, the more you will reap the benefits, so it’s important to stay motivated when life’s challenges get in the way. • Keep a log. Writing down your activities in an exercise journal not only holds you accountable, but also is a reminder of your accomplishments. • Stay inspired. Reading health magazines or watching sports shows can help remind you how great it feels to take care of your body. • Get support. It’s easier to keep going with support. Consider taking a class or exercising with your spouse or a buddy. • Exercise safely. Nothing derails an exercise plan like an injury. Use common sense and don’t exercise if you are ill. Wear brightly colored clothing to be visible on the roads. When the weather brings slippery conditions, walk at a mall indoors to prevent falling. All the golf clubs are starting their seasons. The overseeding is complete and the course is ready for another year of play. Both the Arizona Golf Association and Arizona Women’s Golf Association have converted to the GHIN handicap system. There is very little difference that our members will notice. Scores can still be posted on the kiosk in the Pro Shop using your local number or on line. Apps will be available soon for score posting on an iPhone and iPad. If you haven’t signed up at the AGA or AWGA, please do so. If they have your email address you can get your handicap update and other items of interest. The Marketing Committee is looking for golfers to bring ideas to their meetings. The goal is to help the committee attract potential golfers to our community and golf course. Now that overseeding is complete and the course has been marked, we are ready for another great season. Just a reminder, the driving range is open to the public and range balls are $4 for a small basket (approximately 30 balls) and $6 for a large basket (approximately 60 balls). Rick Sample and I are available for lessons. We are both PGA members and our rates are $45 for one-half hour and $55 for 45 minutes. We also offer packages, so visit the Pro Shop or call us for more information 825-3110. Stop by the Pro Shop and see all the new merchandise that has arrived. Residents receive 15% off their purchases and pass holders receive 30% off. This excludes sale items, clubs and balls. Walkers, please abide by the walking signs that are provided for you on the golf course. We want you to enjoy The Views beautiful scenery and at the same time be sure that you do not get hit by a golf ball. Every fall, weather forecasters give predictions about the coming winter season. The last couple of years they predicted a La Niña weather pattern which means a dry and cold winter. This type of winter is good for generating golf revenues because most days are beautiful with the only negative being cold mornings and frost delays. However, they are predicting an El Niño weather pattern for this winter. Normally that results in a warmer and wetter winter. Golf course superintendents are very excited when there is a prediction of an El Niño winter. The warmer temperatures really benefit the Bermuda grass that is still underneath the overseeded areas. The soil temperatures remain higher which protects the roots and underground parts of the Bermuda grass so the following summer there is less damage during transition. The most obvious benefit of an El Niño winter is the increased amount of rainfall. Most golf courses are watering with reclaimed water so the chance of rain is a huge benefit to the grass and soils. The rain will leach the salts away from the roots which will help both the underlying Bermuda grass and the overseeded rye grass resulting in a much greener, healthier golf course. An extra benefit is the cost savings in not having to irrigate as extensively. However, the increased chances of rain will have a negative impact on golf revenues since golfers in Arizona, unlike golfers in a rainy climate, don’t play golf in Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, November 2012

Avoiding exercises that cause your body to bounce and contact the ground with force will enable you to exercise longer and will protect against loss of balance and potential injury due to falls. As always we recommend you check with your physician and receive approval before starting any new exercise. Sun City Oro Valley is pleased to offer the Sunrisers Low Impact Aerobic Classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7:15-8:15 AM, Auditorium. The new class instructor is Sharon Hertle, a SCOV resident. Sharon has the following accreditation and certifiSaron Hertle cates: National Exercise Trainers Association; Zumba; Silver Sneakers (for muscle, stretch and range of motion). The class format is non-impact choreography with use of elastic tubing, small balls and hand-held-weights. There are no sitting or lying-on-the-floor exercises. Attendees, men and women, range from age 55 to 87 years. Sharon’s class has a fun approach getting everybody moving while improving cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, agility, balance, posture and coordination. Those who plan to attend must purchase an Association Sponsored Fitness punch card, $13 for 10 classes, available at the Vistoso Center. There is a drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card. According to Sigmund Freud, “The conscious mind may be compared to a fountain playing in the sun and falling back into the great subterranean pool of subconscious from which it rises.” As a therapist, Freud was determined to interpret the obscure language of the unconscious and worked at developing techniques to achieve this objective. Our next two meetings, November 7 and December 5, will focus on Freud’s case study of The Rat Man as we examine how he put his theories into practice in his treatment of a patient with an obsessional neurosis. Imagine being a fly on the wall in a room with Dr. Freud and his patient and, further, being privy to the doctor’s notes and assessments of his treatment. We have a very exciting program for our November 14 meeting. Claud Smith, Special Agent, (Retired) Criminal Investigations Department, IRS (Internal Revenue Service) will talk about the activities of this department and the firearms they utilized. (Remember, it was the IRS that got Al Capone.) He also worked for the Secret Service guarding the President and others and will talk about these activities and the firearms used. Mr. Smith worked undercover on combined task forces with the IRS, Secret Service, FBI and DEA. You do not need to be a Gun Club member to come to the meetings. In fact, you do not even need to own a gun or have any experience with firearms to attend meetings. The Gun Club is for people who have an interest in learning about guns, shooting, personal protection and firearm safety. We especially invite women, who are interested in learning about firearms safety and self-protection.

The Photo Workshop Club emphasizes education and the sharing of experience in both photographic composition and technical skill. All sessions offer a wide range of techniques that can be applied regardless of equipment and skill level.

November 7 Topic: Composition, The Basics, No matter what type of camera you use, the techniques of shooting pleasing pictures are the same. This month we explore aspects of composition such as types of light and how your camera sees them, plus the most important compositional rules. We will also discuss how different types of cameras and lenses produce different results. December 5 Topic: Fixing Image Problems When the lighting isn’t quite right or you are in a hurry, your pictures don’t come out the way you hoped. This month we demonstrate how free or low-cost editing software can solve most problems and produce images to be proud of.

Cinque Terre (five lands) of the interesting, beautiful Italian Riviera. Five colorful, distinct towns bravely cling to a rugged, steep mountain descending into the sea. No motor vehicles allowed. Only a trail or sea ferries connect them. Come walk and sail with us via this video as we experience and learn this spectacular unique-inthe-world place. In this presidential election year with political slogans and derisions filling the airwaves and the printed page, it seems appropriate to look at this excerpt from a fairly current protest poem entitled Occupy My Street: …Bring me your protestors, your bedrolls and tents, your signs, your huddled masses chanting derision of me, occupy my street… D.W. Fenza’s re-working of well-known lines from the poem by Emma Lazarus about the Statue of Liberty helps the poet avoid the soap-box, speechifying sound of less effective poems. Protest poems can be comic, satiric, stirring or overly preachy. It’s a difficult genre but an exciting outlet for a passionate opinion about any controversial subject, as some of our members have recently discovered. Please note that we are back at the Vistoso Center/ Yaqui this month. Resident poets are welcome to join us.
