Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors lougard789@gmail.com SCOV Needs You by Lou Gard SCOV needs you to VOLUNTEER! We all remember the iconic posters of Uncle Sam pointing and saying, “I Want You for the U.S. Army.” We now have posters on all of the community bulletin boards reminding residents that you are wanted/needed to help SCOV grow. A volunteer is defined as a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service. If someone asks you to consider joining a committee, don’t say no out of hand, look into that committee and see what that committee is all about. Consider it an honor to be asked, since someone has seen some attribute in you that you yourself may not recognize. We are fortunate to have a vast variety of skills within the residents of SCOV. We come from many backgrounds and experiences. We all came here with some sort of skill sets that may be needed, and can be used, on one committee or another to benefit SCOV. There are many opportunities to volunteer in our community. Almost all of our committees need to replace some of their members on a yearly basis. There are over 20 committees in SCOV. There are five standing committees: Architectural Review, Finance and Budget, Food and Beverage, Golf Advisory and Properties. These committees are mandated by our governing documents. There are four Advisory Committees: AFC, Government Affairs, Long Range Planning and Marketing. There are eight service and support committees: Active Health, Ambassadors, Community Assistance, Consumer Referral, Gift Shop, Neighborhood Pride, Posse, and Tipster Editorial. Presently there are five ad hoc committees: Activity Center Planning, Cooperative Rights, Desert Oasis Upgrade, Future Housing and Greens

Reconstruction. Two others are related to the selection of our Board: the Nominating and Election Committees. Please don’t forget the Library volunteers. You can see there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. There are many reasons to get involved on a committee, personal interest/expertise or just something to do, helping the community in some small or very large way. I will promise you among the new people you will meet, many will become good friends. SCOV got to where it is, a leader in active adult communities in southern Arizona, by many residents giving their time for our betterment. It is your community and whatever you can do to aid the advancement can help hold or increase the property values. If the Association had to pay staff to do the work that committees do, your HOA dues would be significantly higher. When you are sitting at home wondering what to do next, there is probably a committee that could use your expertise. Remember, SCOV needs you to VOLUNTEER.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Hats Off! Over the past 11 months it has been my pleasure to work with a handful of committees as their staff liaison and with a handful of club leaders. They are indicative of the many, many others who serve this community as volunteers and leaders. As I watch these wonderful residents donate the most valuable item (time) they have, I am impressed by their willingness to do what they can for their fellow residents. They are always a strange mix that bring many different ideas to the table. They will be found meeting, planning, discussing, going on field trips, setting up, taking down, preparing, calling, emailing, sometimes agreeing, sometimes disagreeing, sometimes agreeing to disagree, researching, meeting to plan more meetings, sometimes eating, writing, but not very often playing. These people ride through the community in the middle of the night to help keep SCOV safe, the Posse. They visit other communities in a never-ending search for those things that will help our community be ready for the future, Long Range Planning. They do the research on turf agronomics and installation need, Greens Reconstruction Planning Committee. And I don’t want to leave anyone out, but this article is way too small to list all of you. They do and do and do some more. There are hundreds of them. Their reasons for giving so much to the community are as varied as their thoughts and ideas, but there is one common golden thread that passes through this tapestry for all of them and that is their love for the SCOV community and its residents. The bricks and mortar are beautiful in this community but they would all be useless if we didn’t have our volunteers. Hats off to our volunteers. Thank you for being the glue that holds our community together.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 10% Rental Limit The new process for establishing the 10% rental limit in SCOV is underway. Rental applications have been sent to all homeowners. If interested in being considered for one of the 249 rental properties in SCOV, those applications must be returned to SCOV by Friday, December 1, 2017. Also included in the mailing is a Rental Affidavit which will establish those properties qualifying as grandfathered, meaning those whose homes were rented a minimum of 28 days during the year preceding the passage of the initiative (March 28, 2017). Once the applications have been received, all applicants will receive notice of whether or not they qualified to be one of the 249 rentals in SCOV.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Happy Turkey Day Once again we will gather with friends and relatives on Thanksgiving to give thanks for all we have. Many of us are very lucky since hurricanes, fires, floods and violence have been felt by so many. You will see a big change in the lineup of coming events starting in January; in the mean time, we pay tribute to our veterans at SCOV on November 10. Since Veteran’s Day is on Saturday we moved our event to Friday. The Oro Valley American Legion will put on a great show along with a welcome from the mayor of Oro Valley, Dr. Satish I. Hiremath. You won’t want to miss the comedy of Cary Long on Saturday, November 11. See Coming Events on page 12.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Thinking of Listing Your Home? If you are contemplating the sale of your house, please be aware that you need to arrange a Listing Inspection of the exterior of your home by the Architectural Compliance Team (ACT). You may arrange this by calling Katy or Karen in the Community Services office at 520-917-8058. A member of the ACT will come to your house looking for such items as: enough landscape rock covering any bare soil; yard landscape pruned and free of weeds, plant debris and suckers; needed building repairs; house, fencing or gates needing painting; any tripping hazards on the sidewalk; window screens free from holes or sun-scorching, etc. These are just a few examples. Please refer to the Development Standards and the Master Declaration for complete requirements. A copy of this inspection is either mailed or emailed to you. If you have deficiencies, and you correct them before you have an escrow, you may arrange for a re-inspection so that when our HOA reports to the Title Company, the property is given a clean bill of health. If a property has gone to escrow prior to any corrections, the violations will be listed in the compliance report and the buyer will inherit any deficiencies unless the seller has corrected them before closing. A review of your property to see if the exterior is compliant with the governing documents can also be arranged if you are only “thinking” about selling your house and are not ready to commit to that step. This inspection is called a

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, November 2017

Courtesy Inspection and is arranged in the same way. However, these inspection results are handed directly to you and are not incorporated into your resident file. It gives you a heads up about what your property might need to ensure a smooth Listing Inspection which will still have to occur once you have decided to put the property on the market.

Do you read books in series, like JA Jance’s Ali Reynolds series, and have trouble figuring out the chronological order? We have just made it easier. Library volunteer Christine Sullivan is adding that information to the records of all series books in our collection. When this major project is completed in the near future, she will have entered over 2,000 records. To see what this looks like, type the name of a series author like Stuart Woods into the search bar on our website and view the display. Or ask us to show you on your next trip to the Library. New in fiction this month we have the latest by Sandford, Woods, Grisham, and Connelly. The Crown, Season 1 has finally been released in video and will arrive November 7. Our large print collection has a large number of new release bestsellers by authors including Jance, Grisham, Penny, Le Carre, DeMille, Follett, and many others.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Germs Gym germs are in essence the same germs that are found on door knobs, sinks and handrails. One should not use the germ-phobia excuse as a reason to skip the gym as a whole. Being forewarned is being forearmed. When it comes to protecting yourself, and especially your immune system, from these grimy germs, for the most part just takes good common sense, meaning, don’t touch your eyes, ears, or nose while at the gym. Good hygiene is a must; make sure to wash hands thoroughly before and after gym use. By attending the gym regularly you’re likely to have a stronger immune system than someone who does not work out; therefore, you can resist germs better than the general population. Gym etiquette is no longer about just re-stacking your weights when you are done lifting, but now it is wiping the perspiration drops you left behind on the head rest or when walking on the blue mats, think about where your shoes have been. So next time when you see the laminated sign, “Please wipe down after use” staring at you as you approach the treadmill or hit the mats for some abdominal crunches, just do it. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, November 14, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 15, the Desert Oasis Pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

The Aquatic and Fitness Center Committee’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 1. All are invited to bring comments, concerns or suggestions regarding the AFC gym, studio or pool and the Desert Oasis pool. If you are wondering about your own fitness and health, consider that a simple cloth tape measure may be your best tool. Trainer and author Jon Benson (Fit Over 40) uses a waistline-to-height formula as a predictor of heart disease. Men: measure right below the navel; women just above the navel. Do not pull the tape measure tight. Then measure your height (without shoes) in inches. Multiply your waist measurement by two. If the number is greater than your height, you are more likely to get heart disease. This is thought to be more predictive than BMI or cholesterol tests. Landscaping The definition of a hedge is: a fence or barrier formed by a line of closely spaced shrubs and performing a similar function to a screen wall or fence. Per the Master Declaration Section 4.18 a hedge may not be taller than 6 feet. A hedge within the 20-foot front setback may not be taller than 42 inches. This is not a new standard. It has been a part of our Master Declaration since the origin of Sun City. A Development Standard was passed in the past year that a shrub may not be taller than 6 feet that obstructs a neighbor’s sightline. Our plant list was edited by a professor of plant science at the U of A. It includes prohibiting the planting of mesquites, palo verde and oak trees. African Sumacs are prohibited by the town of Oro Valley. If you plant any of these varieties after they have been prohibited, you may be asked to remove it. They are prohibited due to allergens, height restrictions and the amount of debris they create. Please check the list before you change your landscaping.

Food and Beverage Advisory Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-Jun., First Fri., 1 PM, The Views Our mission statement is to advise management on how to further develop The Views Restaurant as a quality fullservice restaurant amenity for the benefit of SCOV residents and their guests. We provide ideas to expand revenues/services as defined by requests and feedback from residents, without interfering in the operation of the facility. There are several ways you can communicate your kudos, desires and concerns: The easiest is just telling the staff at the time of your visit. If wait staff is unable to handle the issue, a restaurant manager is generally available and can take immediate action. The next way is to fill out a comment card, rating the staff and providing useful comments. These are reviewed by the general manager and evaluated for appropriate action. The SCOV website restaurant page can be used as a digital comment card. Your patience is requested while the kitchen is being remodeled to improve your dining experience.

November is a month for reflecting on all that we have, and our SCOV Library is a gem to have in our community. The volunteers, with Kate Cusumano’s wise guidance, make the Library a welcoming space with lots of books and videos to enjoy as the evenings grow longer. Kate also decorates our library with themes of the month and keeps our end stacks creatively filled with new ideas to read and watch. And we can’t forget Christine who thankfully contributes hours in cataloguing books and videos. Join us in thanking Kate, Christine and the volunteers in this spirit of Thanksgiving.

You are welcome to attend to our meetings at any time.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Sincere Thanks Not often enough do we say “thank you” to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Neighborhood Pride issues thanks to all homeowners who:

Attention all Posse members: please attend the Fall Roundup meeting on Thursday, November 2, 9 AM in the Auditorium. A Continental breakfast will be served. Spouses, guests and anyone interested in the Posse are invited. There will be a drivers education course presented by the SCOV insurance carrier which is required in order to operate any Posse vehicle after December 1, 2017. If you cannot attend the training, there will be an online computer version made available. Your squad leader will have the details on how to do the online drivers training. The insurance company also requires each driver to provide your date of birth (DOB) and driver’s license number so they can do a driver record check. The records check and the training will enable SCOV to reduce the cost of insurance coverage on all vehicles. It may also reduce your personal vehicle insurance, check with your own company.

November marks the first anniversary of the startup of the SCOV solar project. The eight systems with a total capacity of 426 kilowatts are located throughout our common area parking lots and roofs. The systems were installed without cost to SCOV and saved us over $6,000 in electricity costs in the first year. The systems are on track to produce about 10 percent more energy than originally estimated. Only a few minor equipment problems have occurred. The systems have web-based monitoring that allows nearly real-time viewing of each system’s power output, energy generation, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions avoided, as well as summary reports of daily and monthly performance. The solar project was investigated and directed by the Properties Committee over a three-year period. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. If you are interested in the activities of the Properties Committee, please plan to attend our next meeting on Thursday, November 16.

Your temporary password is 1234. As a reminder, all passholders may book tee times nine days in advance beginning at 6 AM, and residents, seven days. We look forward to seeing you on the course.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 The first part of November is when the golf course has dried up from the large amount of water used during overseeding. The ground is firm enough to allow the golf carts off the paths and on to the fairways. The last couple of years traffic was controlled using a system of blue stakes to direct golf carts on and off the paths. This would be a good time to refresh everyone on the rules associated with the blue stake gates to help minimize confusion. Each hole, excluding the par 3s, will have a set of blue stakes at the start of the hole and at the end of the hole. These are gates where golf carts will pass through to both leave and return to the cart path. Once the cart leaves the path through the gate it will drive straight to the fairway. The cart will remain in the fairway until it either reaches the end of the fairway where it will leave through the exit gate, or if driving the rest of the fairway is unnecessary, then exit at any time at 90 degrees straight back to the cart path. The goal of directing the golf carts onto the fairways is to keep the traffic in the roughs to a minimum. When the roughs go dormant in the winter, they can’t recover and start to get smashed down. The system has worked well in the past, and the roughs held up much better during the winter season.

The increase in waste receptacles on garbage pickup day and proliferation of dog walkers indicates that the migration from summer quarters to winter quarters is in full swing. We welcome back our seasonal neighbors who have just arrived in time to join in a very busy November of tournament golf. The season begins with one of the more popular major tournaments, the President’s Cup. Match play begins Wednesday, November 8, and continues through Saturday, November 11. Thereafter, the remaining contestants will complete their final round November 15 playing a Stableford format to determine the winners. For golfers not playing in the President’s Cup, tee times will be available. A pre-Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot is scheduled for November 22, with low-net winners claiming prizes, and on November 29 we have a team event known fondly as the Heartless Scramble. Moving ahead to December, remember to purchase your tickets for the BASH scheduled for December 6 to hear what’s new at The Views for 2017-2018 and enjoy a catered lunch and the comradeship of like-minded golfers.

The Gift Shop of SCOV Presents the 9th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival Once again it’s time for our famous SCOV Arts and Crafts Festival. The famous part comes from the high quality of the arts and crafts produced each year by our fellow SCOV residents. As usual, the quality of the items will again be second to none. This year’s event will be on Saturday, December 2, 9 AM-3 PM, and is sponsored by the SCOV Gift Shop. The most well-attended event of the year, it will be held in the comfort of our Activity Center in the Auditorium, Native American Rooms plus the Kachina Lounge. The Views Restaurant will be selling coffee and sweet rolls in the morning hours and a lunch combo in the afternoon in the Navajo Room. We take Visa and MasterCard as well as cash. There is a fabulous raffle with arts and crafts donated by our vendors. Please remember to donate nonperishable food or cash to IMPACT, our local food bank. Darrell Martin’s silver jewelry is always a popular choice for that special gift at this time of year. His unique designs of silver pendants are often accompanied by his handmade chains. The painstaking detail of his work show that special dedication he has to his craft. Darrell also makes handmade sterling silver beads which is a very difficult task to accomplish. Using these beads makes his jewelry truly unique. Lori Nalewicki makes pottery pieces with outstanding attention to detail. She sometimes throws her pottery on a wheel as in the example to the right. She also uses a handbuilt technique to make incredibly detailed pottery pieces. But wait, there’s more: Lori is also a skilled jeweler. Using a variety of materials including semi-precious stones, silver toned and copper beads, Swarovski crystals and even rattlesnake bones, she creates unique pieces of jewelry. Ever heard of a light in a bottle? Bev Koski actually makes them. Starting with an empty wine bottle, she carefully drills a hole in the side and inserts a string of lights. Then she adds a variety of decorations to fit the season or her mood. The variety of decorations she adds will complement almost anyone’s décor and would make a great hostess gift this time of year. Be sure to come to the Arts and Crafts Festival 2017 and see these artists and over 50 more.

One of the organizations that Casa Amigas contributes to is Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services (TOPS). TOPS provides young adults in Arizona with the education needed to make informed decisions about pregnancy, labor and delivery, parenting and sexual health. We provide handmade crocheted and knitted afgans, baby quilts, receiving blankets, burpees and hats. Since January, we have contributed almost 200 items. The teens earn points after attending parenting classes to receive these items. TOPS tells us the teens are amazed there are people willing to make these items for them. Hearing comments like this is what keeps many of us sewing, crocheting and knitting away. We can always use donations of cotton fabric and washable yarn. Please bring to the Sewing Room when someone is there and mark for Casa Amigas. Just don’t leave outside the door if locked. Many thanks.

Seniors for Kids is beginning to gear up for Christmas. We will need shoppers for the “Adopt-a-Family” program. Group decisions will be made relative to the budget for this project. Please attend the Thursday, November 2 meeting to be part of this process and to sign up to be a Santa’s helper. The sewing groups and woodworkers shops will be finishing toys for the annual toy distribution on December 7. All helping hands are welcome. Be part of the fun.

At our November 6 meeting we will discuss Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. This is the story of a remarkable group of African American women mathematicians who overcame prejudice against their sex and race to make a real contribution to the development of aeronautics during WW II and then went on to provide a major contribution to the Space Race. The book focuses on three brilliant women: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson, who with sheer determination, support of family and some of their white male colleagues, go on to achieve their goals in mathematics and engineering at NACA and later NASA. December: Commonwealth by Ann Patchett. In what she calls her “first autobiographical novel,” Ann Patchett draws on experiences from her own life in a blended family. She describes what happens when an illicit affair breaks up two families and recombines them as the guilty partners pursue a new marriage with two unrelated sets of children. The book follows the life of the intertwined family over the course of five decades and chronicles the disruptions and relationships that develop.

Poet Dorianne Laux’s “Break” shows how one couple manages to escape from the realities of an overwhelming world. “We put the puzzle together piece / by piece, loving how one curved / notch fits so sweetly with another. / A yellow smudge becomes / the brush of a broom, and two blue arms / fill in the last of the sky. / We patch together porch swings and autumn / trees, matching gold to gold. We hold / the eyes of deer in our palms, a pair / of brown shoes. We do this as the child / circles her room, impatient / with her blossoming, tired / of the neat house, the made bed, / the good food. We let her brood / as we shuffle through the pieces, / setting each one into place with a satisfied / tap, our backs turned for a few hours / to a world that is crumbling, a sky / that is falling, the pieces / we are required to return to.”

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Two excellent instructors are here at SCOV twice every week to teach Joseph Pilates classes. Their aim is to make each class participant, regardless of their exercise level, adept in achieving their maximum core strength. Core muscles run the entire length of your torso. The instructors especially stress the importance of strong abdominal muscles which help to stabilize our spine and pelvis. The Pilates exercises are simple. We begin classes with low-impact warm-up exercises, including stretching and deep breathing. The instructors modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. Group mat classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone, energy and well being. Please join us or come watch a class. Cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Call Mary with questions. Don’t miss the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, December 2, Activity Center
