Association News From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors jhuxtablescov@gmail.com

Reflections From a New Board Member by Joy Huxtable Recently, notices have gone out that “The Association is seeking nominations to fill three seats on the Board of Directors.” I started thinking about what motivates residents to pursue this opportunity to serve our community as a Board member. For some, it may be receiving a letter from the Nominating Committee or a personal call of encouragement from a friend. For others, it is a desire to get involved with the Association’s policy or financial decisions. In a few cases, there may be a specific issue facing our community that motivates a person to run. Whatever their reasons, each year the success of our community depends on residents stepping forward to share their knowledge, life experiences or business acumen. Board members make a major commitment of their time and energy to the ongoing vitality of our Association. As a new Board member, I found myself in the rather unusual position of being the only “newbie” to join the Board in 2018. At first I was apprehensive, but found all the current Board members to be very welcoming and supportive. I quickly learned my colleagues are a hard-working, thoughtful group of people, who clearly want the best for our community. I have learned that there is wide diversity of opinions and interests among our residents, and in my role on the Board, I will never be able to please everyone. My diplomatic skills and sense of humor will be tested. However, my goal is to always stay focused on the Board’s mission to provide leadership in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in SCOV. I was surprised by the variety of issues that come before the Board. Some are generated by concerns or special requests from our residents. Others are related to policy, personnel or financial issues. Many times, a resident will send the Board an email about some operational concern or problem. These are generally referred to our General Manager who, along with his staff, does an amazing job of responding to residents’ concerns, and resolving problems, while keeping the Board informed. The Board’s role is to:

support policies, maintain our amenities, approve the budget and maintain the financial integrity of the Association. If you love our community and want to support its ongoing success, please consider running for the Board in 2019, or encourage a fellow resident to get involved. Nomination applications are available on the SCOV website. For questions, contact the Nominating Committee, Robin Coulter or feel free to contact me.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080

Customer Service is a Verb I’m not an English major although my mother was, and she taught it at the high school level. I guess you can tell that very little rubbed off on me even though I took her class. One thing I do remember is a verb denotes action. Recently, I created a Champions group which will promote customer service among employees. The Champions consist of a representative from each department who is not a manager. The Champions develop training and activities to promote excellence in customer service. At the end of September they had their first event with over 62 staff members attending from all departments and included translation into Spanish for those who understand it better. The event took nearly two hours and proof of effectiveness is in the actions of staff. The day after the training an incident took place that was related to me later by our Common Area Maintenance Manager, Mary Cunningham. A personal caregiver took her client who was in a wheelchair for a stroll down the hill on Rancho Vistoso Blvd. She did not realize how steep the hill was nor how far down the hill she had gone. Mary noticed one of her staff pushing a man in a wheelchair up the hill with an SCOV truck following very slowly. When she stopped and asked, it was explained that the caregiver didn’t have the strength to push the wheelchair back up the hill. The staff person was helping out by pushing him. Mary inquired as to where the caregiver was? She was told the caregiver was in the truck. Long story short, staff helped in an extraordinary way to get the person in the wheelchair back home. Our staff care about our residents and it is showing. The training is helpful, and if this story is any indication of its effectiveness, we will see some great customer service this year. My congratulations to Mary and her staff for going above and beyond. Special congratulations to the Champions for a successful training session. Yes, customer service is a verb, and I believe you will see a lot of active customer service from our staff. We all thank you for allowing us to serve you.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Administration Customer Service We have been challenged by our General Manager to keep customer service in the forefront of our training, discussion and work practices. The Administration department meets weekly, and in most of those meetings we have some type of customer service training. Most recently we’ve worked our way through a book called Hug Your Haters, which addressed the importance of dealing with customer concerns (and complaints) and equipped us with some tools and processes to do so. Additionally, the Champions group, referred to in our General Manager’s article, challenged each department to develop a mission statement. Administration worked together to develop what we feel embodies our work for SCOV, which is “Valuing people as we facilitate a positive, healthy, active lifestyle!” We are here for you. Your experience through interacting with our department should be positive. We want to help you enjoy this healthy, active lifestyle offered in SCOV. The statement surrounds the door frame between the Administration (Welcome Center) lobby and the meeting rooms. It’s a reminder to us and a promise to you.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Incident Reports Have you ever gotten a call from me because you were hurt or became ill on SCOV property? Whenever a resident becomes ill or is hurt, we always want to make sure they are OK. Many times 911 is called or is refused by the resident. We always fill out an incident report, usually by the monitor in a facility or staff in the restaurant and Pro Shop. We do a follow up-call to make sure the resident is OK. This is especially true if the resident lives alone. It’s another way the Association wants you to know that we care. I hope I don’t ever have to call you due to an injury or the fact that you were transported by ambulance, just know that we care.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours Mon.-Fri., 9-11 AM, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Thinking of Selling Your Home? If you are contemplating the listing and sale of your home, the HOA requires an inspection of the exterior of your property at the time of listing to see if there are items that do not comply with the governing documents. The information noted on a Listing Inspection gives a seller the opportunity to make corrections prior to an escrow, so there is a clean bill of health on the property when the HOA reports to the title company. If you are not sure that you really want to list but are curious if there are any deficiencies such as not enough landscape rock or backyard trees overhanging into the neighbor’s yard, you can arrange for a Courtesy Inspection. The worksheet results of a Courtesy Inspection are given to the owner onthe-spot and are not recorded in a resident profile. They give an owner an opportunity to identify potential items that might appear on a Listing Inspection. A Courtesy Inspection does not take the place of a Listing Inspection. Please contact Karen Loffredo at 520-917-8087 or Katy Mosier at 520-917-8058 to arrange either of these reviews.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Use of the Safety Clips on Treadmills The Life Fitness treadmills have a safety tether or clip; always use it. This feature clips to your clothing and automatically stops the machine if you pull away from the control panel. While most people skip out on using the safety clip, it’s the best and most recommended way of avoiding serious harm when using a treadmill. If you suddenly fall, you will not be able to stop the machine using the emergency stop button, as it will be out of your reach. Stopping the belt can prevent burns, abrasions and other forms of bodily harm. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, November 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 14, the Desert Oasis Pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Association Committees Active Health Judy Greenberg, 631-974-4375, gfam5@yahoo.com Nov.-May, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 www.suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health

Kudos to Janyce Lundstedt who has been the chairperson of the Active Health Committee (AHC) for the past few years. Under her leadership our community has benefited from her valiant efforts. She has been responsible for organizing the informative, interesting monthly lectures, has introduced the successful balance class and a new meditation class, as well as continuing the support groups under the helm of Ester Leutenberg 520-818-0016, ester36@gmail. com. A new support group for diabetics is being formed and more information will be forthcoming. Janyce will be stepping down from her position and the AHC is searching for her replacement. She is a hard act to follow but is willing to mentor her successor. Watch the Tipster and flyer for the lecture on mindfulness, Friday, December 14, 1 PM, Auditorium. We all wish Janyce good luck in her new endeavors and say a heartfelt thank you.

Activity Center Renovation Chair Ed Zwerling ACRC@suncityorovalley.com First and Third Tue., 10 AM, AC/Hohokam Room

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Chair Stan Shopa First Wed., 11:30 AM, WC1 afc@suncityorovalley.com

Welcome back to our seasonal residents. We hope you had a pleasant and healthy summer. Those of you who use our facilities will notice the new ladders and railings that have been installed in our pools. The deck surrounding the pool at the AFC will be cleaned and repainted and should be done by the time you read this article. Good news: Lonnie, Ray, and Sharon will present a health and exercise program for the community sometime in midwinter. More on this to come. A request to pool users: please do not wear your pool shoes from the parking lot to the pool. The oily residue from the parking lot is not only unsightly but difficult for our monitors to clean. Thanks. Keep those suggestion cards coming in.

Architectural Review Lorie Puffett 415-902-1133 lpuffett@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3

The SCOV Development Standards are the main governing document by which Architectural Review Committee (ARC) operates. It is a good idea to be familiar with the contents of the Standards. You may save yourself from receiving a Courtesy Notice from the SCOV Administration staff or from having the sale of your property delayed by being aware of what is and is not allowed in our community. ARC recently recommended several changes to the Development Standards to the SCOV Board of Directors. Many of the recommended changes are a reorganization of existing information in an attempt to make the standards easier to read and to make it easier to find specific guidance. A paper copy of the revised Development Standards may be obtained from the SCOV Administration office or an electronic version may be found in the Documents section of the SCOV website.

As I write this month’s entry, the paper phone books are being printed and, hopefully, will arrive as scheduled in time for delivery to your house during the November 2 weekend. Watch Mark Wade’s “This Week in SCOV” email for the latest details. Once the books are delivered, be sure to check your front door for yours. If you don’t need your book, please return it to the Welcome Center to be reused. Congratulations to Steve Holmes for the beautiful cover photograph. The large number of terrific entries made the decision very difficult. Remember, you can still update your listing in our online directory. The online version is updated monthly, thus always has the most current information. To update your listing in the directory, complete the online form “To change your directory listing…” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Committee agendas, minutes and financial reports are posted on the SCOV members-only website. Typically, the current monthly agenda is posted the Monday prior to the meeting date. Following is the committee timeline for Board recommendations: November: Association investment policies (any change will require a members’ vote to amend the Bylaws). “The Views Golf Course” is a great name without question. The mountain landscapes from almost any hole on the course are picturesque. I don’t think there is another course in the area that can compare. We have many valuable assets in SCOV. As with most assets, improvements are needed over time to maintain the quality of those assets. Most of us have probably spent money to make improvements or keep our homes in working condition. Many community assets have also been improved (examples are the fitness center/pool, community buildings, the restaurant, tennis and pickleball courts, etc.). SCOV does a great job using Association monies to make improvements in order to offer quality assets and activities to

residents. The result is a community that is one of the best. It is also highly sought after by buyers of Oro Valley’s real estate. The golf course is no exception. Over the past decade, improvements have been made to reconstruct cart paths, install ponds, introduce reclaimed water, upgrade the irrigation system, repair bunkers, and numerous other projects taken on by Mike Kropf and his staff. Ensuring the future quality and reputation of our course is why the greens reconstruction committee was chartered. We are finalizing our work with the architect to understand the conceptual design and costs. We will also have input from a professional agronomist. As promised, once this information is ready, we will share it.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell 520-825-5763 Meeting Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1; Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/ November is a great month in SCOV, evident in many residents returning and lots of family and friends visiting over the holidays. Please make your reservations for items from the Loan Room up to two months in advance as we do run out of tables and chairs, beds and children’s items during the winter months. Medical items are in larger supply and loaned for longer periods of time, so we do not usually have a supply issue. Please visit the website for pictures and lists of items available, and feel free to visit us when we are open.

Marketing Chair Pete Coy 360-739-4100 petecoy@gmail.com Fourth Mon., 3 PM, WC1 Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Thank You, Thank You Neighborhood Pride issues sincere thanks to all homeowners who: • keep trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • keep trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • keep plants trimmed back off sidewalks • keep their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • make sure all lights are burning in house number plates. Not often enough do we say “thank you” to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage; it just might deserve a thank you. Thanksgiving is a good time to sincerely thank all homeowners who take pride in their own personal property and work diligently to keep our entire community a beautiful place in which to live.

Is this your hat? We have a nice white hat or visor just for you if you join the Posse. The Posse is very short-handed. Give us three hours, once a month, to drive our patrol vehicle with your partner. Your partner can be your spouse, or your squad leader will assign you a patrol partner. A typical patrol will drive about 30 miles to cover all the streets in Sun City. Your SCOV neighbors will appreciate your service to our neighborhood security and safety. Our nightly patrols have found over 600 open garage doors so far this year. Please volunteer, we need you.

Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values Chair Don Stewart 618-980-3878 bethsdad81@gmail.com

The Task Force to Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values has organized around two pressing questions of how to maintain the quality environmental setting currently available and how to keep the SCOV community a highly-marketable and forward-looking place to live. To address concerns of balancing the homeowners’ rights to modify or update homes and landscapes with the neighbors’ rights against encroachment, the Task Force has looked at how other communities have done it. The legal guidelines for these issues were investigated and our Architectural Review Committee was engaged to discover the specific trends developing at SCOV. The continued focus and direction for the Task Force will be to identify a workable process for decisions related to on-going development of vegetation and permanent structures. The meeting schedule for the Task Force is published on the SCOV web site and meetings are always open to SCOV homeowners. ON THE COVER

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1

November marks the second anniversary of the start-up of the SCOV solar project. The eight systems with a total capacity of 426 kilowatts are located throughout our common area parking lots and roofs. Solar provides about 60% of the electrical needs at SCOV-owned facilities. The systems were installed without cost to SCOV and provide a net savings to the Association when compared with purchasing power from TEP. The systems have web-based monitoring that allows nearly real-time viewing of each system’s power output, energy generation, carbon dioxide emissions avoided as well as summary reports of daily and monthly performance. The solar project was investigated and directed by the Properties Committee over a three-year period. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 15.

The upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will have an impact on the Tipster production schedule. Please submit Tipster articles a day earlier by November and December 7, to help us meet our press deadlines. The next Editorial Committee meeting is Thursday, November 15, 9 AM, WC3.

PM on certain days. Designed for the casual and non-golfers interested in taking the next step in playing more golf, we will be offering a new Introductory Golf Pass with limited access very soon.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 The first part of November is when the golf course has dried up from the large amount of water used during overseeding. The ground is firm enough to allow golf carts off the paths and on to the fairways. Cart traffic has been controlled the last few years using a system of blue stakes to direct golf carts on and off the paths. This would be a good time to refresh everyone on the rules associated with the blue stake gates to help minimize confusion. Each hole, excluding the par 3s, will have a set of blue stakes at the start of the hole and at the end of the hole. These are gates where golf carts will pass through to both leave and return to the cart path. Once the cart leaves the path through the gate it will drive straight to the fairway. The cart will remain in the fairway until it either reaches the end of the fairway where it will leave through the exit gate, or, if driving the rest of the fairway is unnecessary, then exit at any time 90 degrees straight to the cart path. The goal of directing the golf carts on to the fairways is to keep the traffic in the roughs to a minimum. When the roughs go dormant in the winter they can’t recover and start to get smashed down. The system has worked well the last several years and the roughs held up much better for the winter season.

November brings back many of our winter residents and with that, increased play on our golf course. All golfers need to be good ambassadors of golf by welcoming members and guests to our beautiful golf course. The simple tasks of repairing ball marks, fixing divots and raking bunkers are important in keeping our golf course in good playing condition. The Pro Shop has many repeat and new activities planned for the new golf season, so check with them to see what is happening. November starts with the President’s Cup played November 7 and 10 with the final playoff to determine flight winners and the champion November 14. This is a match play, low net tournament with the positive aspect of match play being that one bad hole doesn’t end your chances. An entry fee will be required, and winners will receive a Pro Shop credit. For a more relaxing, fun tournament there is the Turkey Shoot November 21, and half the field will be winners, so pick your poison for November tournaments. Now that overseeding is done and the course looks better than ever, please remember to repair ball marks on greens, repair divots in the fairways and rough, rake sand bunkers and for the enjoyment of all, keep up with the pace of play. If you’re thinking it’s the clubs and not your swing, come out to the two scheduled Demo Days November 2 and November 30 and test your theory. See you on the links.

Greetings from The Views Restaurant. We would like to welcome back our seasonal guests. We have been busy over the summer, as you may have read. As we move into November, we are focused more than ever on the business plan, rolling out our first change to the new menus. We have analyzed the sales mix for the last two months, and have determined which items have been selling and which should be to retired. The good news is that the majority of the items are very evenly sold which tells us that people are enjoying a variety of items and that we have a good base to start with. So let’s dive into the particulars. Items that will be removed from the next menu are: • Grande Parfait. Yogurt and fruit will be added to side choices. • Steak and Eggs. We only sold 22 over two months. We will still have the option to add a steak to the Mildred’s Breakfast. • Meat and Cheese Board. This item will be reworked or replaced. We sold 14 over two months. • Pork Medallions, Salmon Beurre Rouge and Shrimp Scampi were all seasonal items that will be reworked keeping the same main proteins and preparing them in a seasonal way. • Portabella Brochette will be replaced with a vegetarian stir fry. I will continue to you keep everyone informed on our progress as our restaurant continues to grow. Thank you to everyone for the continuous support you have given, and we look forward to serving you.

Celebrations & Life Events SCOV quilter Janet Pugh was honored by the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, when her award-winning quilt, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?,” was accepted by the museum as part of its permanent collection. Made with a friend in 2004 for the Quilters Newsletter magazine contest celebrating 35 years, Janet’s quilt won a $3,000 prize. The quilt depicts a dinner table with three-dimensional plates of fabric each quilted in the style of well-known American contemporary quilters. Janet’s quilt, which has been exhibited in five states and appraised for $8,000, is unique for its design originality and the awards it has received. Janet is active in the Tucson Quilt Guild and two art quilt groups, as well as SCOV Quilters Club.

The studios have been changed to accommodate growing numbers of members and someone to give advice or share ideas is available almost any time. Remember to take care around the work of others. A relationship is more important than the clay.

Clubs Arts, Crafts & Hobbies

Our studio is fully active again with the return of our seasonal resident artists. Many of us have returned with some significant ideas for new pieces and can’t wait Our Fine Arts group of artists to place paint/ chalk on canvas or paper. We’ve participated in two Activity Center shows in the past months and are working on paintings for the December hanging themed “Through a Window” which has an all Art League participation. A window can be looked through from either direction, so this show should be quite interesting. We encourage all budding artists to visit our group on Wednesday mornings for coffee and art talk.

Japanese Flower Arranging Donald Marier 520-825-4878 dolmar21@gmail.com Nov.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace, and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 sigridkf@gmail.com Tue., 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Starting this month we will be in a new location and at a new time: Tuesdays, 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge. Hopefully we will still be able to sustain the number of knitters and crocheters we’ve had in the summer with the new date and time. Even if you aren’t able to attend the whole time, please come for the time you can. Our group is very flexible and you can drop in anytime. We’re looking forward to seeing any seasonal residents who have been away during the summer. Feel free to drop in if you want to use up that stash you’ve had gathering dust.

Most of our seasonal residents have migrated back to SCOV for the winter season and our studio is buzzing with new ideas. This is our planning month for the training classes to be given next calendar year. We always aspire to bigger and classier pieces; however our new works, simple or complex, are pleasing and quite worthy of display. Thanks to our president, Laurie Lichaa, and the rest of our summer group for holding down the fort during this past hot summer. We are a teaching club and will assist all newbies in the creation of their masterpiece sculpture. This is quite an art form and we encourage all interested residents to come in and visit us.

All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings. The Modelers Room provides space for members to build models and assist in building and operating the HO model train layout. Join us at our meeting to see what we are about and enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. Also, at our meetings members bring in items for show and tell which serves as a conduit for our discussions. From time to time, we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Seasonal residents have started to return and we are looking forward to lots of action in the sewing room. It’s been a quiet summer and fall, but now many friends have returned. The need for children’s clothing continues and right now we are sewing flannel sleep pants, fleece vests, jumpers and skirts. A new, colorful tee shirt is usually added to each item, completing the ensemble. Many of the sewers also contribute knitted or crocheted hats and scarves for the cooler winter weather. If you are looking to put your sewing/serging/quilting skills to good use, come join us. The patterns are easy, no sleeves or zippers. We love to help others get started. Just an orientation on the sewing/serger machines is required. Cheer Bears

Pat Norton 480-993-8762 panpan9803@yahoo.com Wed., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

Man alive, doesn’t time fly. It has been a very busy summer in the SCOV sewing room. We are really ready for the seasonal residents to return to their homes away from home. The Cheer Bears will be meeting again every Wednesday , 1-3 PM, Artisan Center Sewing Room. We enjoy meeting all ladies and men who would like to help make the cute little bears that bring joy to the hearts of children in all areas of Tucson and Arizona. They are so cute as you can see from the picture, but it takes many hands to make the tasks go smoothly. Joy and friendship abide in the room, and we hope to welcome many. See y’all soon.

New day; new location (see above). This month’s meeting will be Tuesday, November 20. Every month we see new things and get more embroidery ideas. In October, we had a demo on embroidering organza to make a Halloween shadow-box decoration. Some members will be using this same technique to make Christmas ornaments. At our November meeting we’ll learn how to make a book pillow. Get ready for making lots of pillows for Christmas gift giving. Contact Karin Frohlich for instruction on the 6-needle machine in the Sewing Room. Instructions are available to any Thimblelenas member. Save the new meeting date and join us. Monday, November 12, we will have our challenge luncheon in the Navajo Room, 11 AM. Again we have invited the SaddleBrooke Quilters to be our guests for this annual event. Each participant was asked to depict an Arizona sunrise or sunset in a small wall hanging. They will all be displayed at our annual quilt show. Tuesday, November 27, 9 AM, Sewing Room, Debra Kay will teach a purse class. That afternoon, at our regular meeting, we ask each of our members to bring her favorite quilting book to share with the group. It is not unusual for a member to be unfamiliar with some club tools or equipment, particularly those that are kept in the vault. Modern equipment, like an ultrasonic cleaner, can be confusing when the controls and the owner’s manual are not user-friendly. Even simple tools such as planishing hammers can be problematic, if you don’t know what planishing is. In our student orientation classes, we focus on the very basic tools and techniques of silversmithing, with a brief overview of lapidary work. To help members grow their skills and knowledge base, we will be conducting a series of workshops and demonstrations on existing and new tools and equipment. These sessions will be held monthly (or more frequently, if necessary) on Friday afternoon. On those Fridays when a session is not scheduled, there will still be time for members to get special help on their projects.

This is the true story of an unsung hero of WW II, Pino Lella, a Milanese teenager who used his unique opportunities and gifts to spy for the Allies. Our December book selection is The Lost Letter by Arizona author Jillian Kantor. Moving between 1938 Austria and 1989 Los Angeles, this novel connects a grim history to a more hopeful present through the tale of two sets of starcrossed lovers. The result is a captivating historical novel.

There’s something almost sacred about the bond between man and dog and Carl Phillips describes it eloquently in “White Dog”: “First snow—I release her into it—I know, released, she won’t come back. This is different from letting what, already, we count as lost go. It is nothing like that. Also, it is not like wanting to learn what losing a thing we love feels like. Oh yes: I love her. Released, she seems for a moment as if some part of me that, almost, I wouldn’t mind understanding better, is that not love? She seems a part of me, and then she seems entirely like what she is: a white dog, less white suddenly, against the snow, who won’t come back. I know that; and, knowing it, I release her. It’s as if I release her because I know.” At the Poets Corner we aspire to this type of writing.

“Oro Valley’s History,” presented by Jim Williams begins Monday, November 5, 9 AM. If you signed up for this class,

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Two excellent instructors are in the SCOV AFC studios twice a week to teach Joseph Pilates classes. Their aim is to make each class participant, regardless of exercise level, adept in achieving their maximum core strength. Core muscles run the entire length of your torso. The instructors especially stress the importance of strong abdominal muscles which help to stabilize our spine and pelvis. The Pilates exercises are simple. We begin each class with low-impact warm-up exercises, which include stretching and deep breathing. Then the instructors modify the most strenuous Pilates exercises for anyone with limitations. Group mat classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone, energy and well being. Please join us or come and watch a class. Cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Call Mary with questions.

We meet year-round starting from the Vistoso Community Church parking lot at 1200 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. (behind the Fire Station) to enjoy an unparalleled combination of amazing desert vistas and ever-improving infrastructure of bike lanes and dedicated paths. New riders are always welcome. A monthly schedule of our 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop. We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands. Tuesday morning, our Women on Wheels (WOW) group takes somewhat shorter rides closer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season.

Come on out, pick up a paddle and get those bodies moving. With smiley, eager members to greet you, you’ll be glad you did.

The Racquetball Club is in full strength as we welcome back our seasonal residents. Featured this month is Walter Swap who moved to our warmer climate from Massachusetts. Walt is a sports enthusiast. Professor Walt enjoys competition and it shows with his deadly serve. He is also very active at the game of pickleball. On another note, please be aware of the proximity of others on the court and do not swing if they are too close. Safety should be our number one concern. This winter, do what retired cookies do. It is rumored that retired cookies like to kick back and enjoy life with new friends, parties, travel, events, and hot cocoa. And if they could talk, they’d say “bah” to doing winter chores. Well, the residents at Fairwinds – Desert Point Retirement Community wholeheartedly agree. And you can join them! Call (520) 314‑5141 to schedule your complimentary lunch and tour—you smart cookie, you.

It’s More Than Retirement. It’s Five-Star Fun.
