From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors jmitchscov@gmail.com
A Policy for the Birds by Jim Mitchell As a newer Board member, I was encouraged to see so many residents take to heart Tim Kelley’s asking residents “to provide comments and concerns such that all viewpoints can be taken into consideration” in last month’s column. Those words quickly struck a nerve when the packet prior to the September 24 Board meeting was posted on our website. Staff worked hard over the summer reviewing the Homeowner’s Handbook, committee charters and various other documents and recommending changes. The hot issue was a proposed handbook revision that would have banned feeding birds. The Board received around 50 emails from residents running the gamut from full support to total objection. As a result, at our meeting, the Board unanimously approved the following regarding birds: “Feeding birds with solid foods (seeds, bread, etc.) may seem harmless but dispersion of such foods on the ground can attract vermin (rats, mice) and their predators (snakes, coyotes); this practice is therefore discouraged. Scattering of seeds from hanging feeders can make food available to vermin on the ground below; homeowners are asked to clean up this area as necessary. Such concerns do not attend the use of hummingbird feeders but regular cleaning should be done to prevent the formation of noxious or disease-causing organisms.” The provision does ban the feeding of javelinas and other animals, which is illegal in Pima County. Compare that process of proposal, feedback, changes and approval with an experience I had last spring at a Financial Conversations with Residents meeting. A resident asked what could be done about SCOV paying more than $250,000 in property taxes each year. Taken aback, Controller Randy Trenary, explained that our real estate taxes were $29,460 and personal property taxes (equipment, etc.) were $9,100. When asked where he got his $250,000 figure, the resident replied, “My neighbor told me.” The contrast of the two experiences sticks in my mind as I serve on the Board. First, we have processes in place for
residents to give feedback and for the Board and staff to respond. Second, when misinformation and rumors spread without residents questioning or asking those who might have the facts, the Board and staff will be in the dark, unable to respond. Bottom line, as they used to say, “keep those cards and letters (phone calls and emails) coming.”
Home Sweet Home at Sun City Oro Valley Next month I’ll have been here three years as your General Manager. Along with our staff, I’ve been able to watch and track the successful value of the homes that have sold. You may not know how good your home investment is, so I thought it is a good time to share some statistics with you. In 2016, when I came, the average home sold for $150 per square foot. So far this year, homes average $185 per square foot with the highest month of August showing an average of $208. In 2016 there were an average of 33 homes on the market each month. This year we have averaged 13 homes on the market with September showing 11 and in August, eight homes on the market. In 2016 our community averaged 20 homes per month sold. Thus far this year we’ve averaged 16 home sales per month. This year the average home sold after having been on the market for just 27 days. This includes 28 homes that were on the market for one day and nine homes that were on the market for over 100 days. Since 2012, 1,581 homes have sold or changed hands. That is a 63.55% change in ownership of homes for our community over the past 7 years. One of the primary fiduciary duties of the Board of Directors is to protect, to the best of their ability, the value of homes in the community. In the past three years the value of homes has increased on an average of $35 per square foot or 23%. The Board is doing an excellent job and the proof is in the pudding. Congratulations to all of you who have chosen to call Sun City Oro Valley your home. Your foresight in purchasing a home here is bringing you not only social dividends of living here with some great friends/residents and facilities, but also financial gains as the value of your homes continues to increase. Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home and boy is home a great investment here at Sun City Oro Valley. Welcome home!

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Sun City Oro Valley Seniors for Kids Mission: To put smiles on the faces of children in need
S
by Jean Sax
eniors for Kids (SFK) loves to help by recognizing and serving the needs of children and families in our community. We work hard and enjoy brainstorming new endeavors. Joining our group requires no dues, and no special skills. We have a multitude of projects in which to participate. WE NEED YOU! SFK was the brainchild of former residents Grant and Mary Bergemann. Back in 1994, they were reading an article in the Parade section of the Sunday newspaper. The article talked about a group of retired gentlemen who were building toys for kids who were hospitalized. Mary suggested to Grant, who was an excellent woodworker, that he could do the same. It took no time at all for Grant to recruit some of his woodworking buddies and launch SFK. Of course, not to be outdone, Mary gathered her friends and they headed to the sewing room to create their own toys. What a fabulous organization this has become. In its 25 years in existence, the outreach of SFK now spans as far south as Three Points and as far north as Mammoth. Seniors for Kids is a group of 60+ residents who do everything from building toys in the wood- SFK members and handmade toys for the working shop to creating 2018 donation and making a huge variety of children’s gift items in the Sewing Room; including toys, blankets, pillows, quilts, bibs, baby hats and booties, cheer bears and cloth books. Our biggest project falls during the holidays when we adopt 30+ children from the Tri-Community area and purchase gifts for them. Our members shop, wrap and deliver. Our mega-toy distribution in December distributes to the charities listed below. SFK is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. In addition to handmade items, we donate cash, food products, books, diapers and personal hygiene products. Our revenue sources are private donations and the annual Courtyard Sale. Staffing the food booths and rummage tables requires at least 60 vol-unteers. Our newest endeavor, Kuddles for Kids, is an SCOV-wide project that runs during November and early December. SFK invites all residents to purchase and donate new stuffed animals (not over 18 inches tall). Look for the brightly lettered Seniors for Kids container with the Kuddles for Kids poster. It can be found in the Activity Center, and we invite residents to drop cuddly creatures in the container. They will be delivered to Banner

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Governing Documents & Rules About the time you’re moving into SCOV, the title company presents you with a thumb drive with loads of documents, including the HOA governing documents and rules. You’re trying to sell a home, buy a home, move all your furnishings to a new location and set up all the services needed to make a home. It’s fairly safe to say that somewhere in that mountain of tasks the governing documents and rules may not have received your undivided attention.J We’re here to help. The governing documents are always available to members of the Association and can be located on our website at suncityorovalley.com. Select Members, then Documents. From this page, the governing documents are available. Overarching documents include the Master Declaration, Bylaws, Articles of Incorporation, Development Standards and Board Policies. The other documents include the Homeowner Handbook, Club Rules, Golf Rules, Tract Declarations and more. So, if you’re looking for the governing documents (or perhaps you can’t sleep one night) check out this page. There is much information about SCOV and how our community is governed.
Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Soon we will gather around tables to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with friends and neighbors. What a great time to be thankful for the many things to do in SCOV and in our lives. Some of you will be leaving for the holidays to spend time in other states. I am hoping your travels will be safe and with good weather. Our holiday door decoration contest will take place in December, so be sure to read the flyer and entry form in the Tipster inserts. This contest has grown over the years and has brought us some very clever winners. I also leave to be with my family over Thanksgiving. I am told I make the best turkey and dressing; I think my family makes this statement just to be sure I do the cooking.
Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours Mon.-Fri., 9-11 AM, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Illuminated Address Boards Many of us have been repairing or replacing parts (such as light globes) for our illuminated address boards by going to the local Ace Hardware on First Avenue and Tangerine. Ace Hardware has informed us that the Heritage Illuminator address board has been recently phased out of production in favor of a new model whose numbers are 4 inches tall. It is called the Estate model. Ace will continue to supply tiles, PC boards and bulbs for our older boards as long as they are available. If you must replace your existing board, the ARC has preapproved the new Estate model which Ace is carrying. The Estate mounting holes are about 3 inches farther apart than the Heritage mounting holes but the new frame will totally cover the old model footprint. The wire enters both frames at the same spot. Illuminated house number boards are the required standard on all SCOV homes. The ARC may approve submittals for other types of illuminated boards on a case-by-case basis.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the hundreds of excess books and movies donated to the library each month that we don’t need for our collection? Some of the new release books and movies are traded at Bookmans for items we can use. Older items, or anything that doesn’t sell after a few months on our sale shelves, are given to worthy organizations including the Oro Valley Public Library, the VA Retirement Campus, Sister Jose Women’s Shelter and the Tohono O’Odham Indian Reservation in Sells, Arizona. A tremendous amount of volunteer time goes into sorting donations, deciding what to do with each item, and then packing, loading and delivering them to a new home. Unfortunately, many older books, those in poor condition, or books with outdated information, such as books on medical topics, investing, computers, travel, etc., must be thrown away. Save volunteers’ time and effort by checking in advance on what we can and cannot accept. Our criteria is available on the SCOV website by clicking on Library>Related Links>Donations. Or pick up an information card in the library. I hope many of you will plan to attend the Great Reads Book Talk on Thursday, November 14, 10 AM, Activity Center/Navajo and Hohokam Rooms. Stop by the library or read the Friends of the Library article on page 8 for more details. Don’t miss the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, November 16, Activity Center

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Cold and Flu Season Coming Gym germs are, in essence, the same germs that are found on door knobs, sinks and handrails. One should not use the germ phobia excuse as a reason to skip the gym. Being forewarned is being forearmed. When it comes to protecting yourself and your immune system from these grimy germs, all it takes, for the most part, is good common sense, meaning, don’t touch your eyes, ears or nose while at the gym. Good hygiene is a must, making sure to wash hands thoroughly before and after gym use. By attending the gym regularly, you’re likely to have a stronger immune system than someone who does not work out, therefore, you can resist germs better than the general population. Gym etiquette is no longer just restacking your weights when you are done lifting, but now it is wiping the perspiration drops you left behind on the head rest or when you are walking on the grey mats, think about where your shoes have been. So, next time when you see the laminated sign, “Please wipe down after use” staring at you as you approach the treadmill or hit the mats for some abdominal crunches, just do it. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, November 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Many residents take part in the numerous active and passive classes in the Fitness Studio. They may not be aware of the special fitness flooring beneath their feet. This quality floor is designed to absorb shock and reduce vibration to lessen leg stress and offers optimum traction and slip resistance for the prevention of injuries. It also creates a subtle spring-like effect to reduce fatigue and allow for more efficient running and jumping. That is why it is imperative that proper footwear, i.e., tennis shoes, are worn during such activities. The floor’s closed cell backing is designed for fitness activities only and not intended for tables and chairs.

Courtyards are a popular addition to many SCOV homes. New courtyards require ARC approval. Here are a few tips to think about before adding a courtyard to your home. Courtyards must be surrounded by a stucco or masonry wall that is a minimum of 3 feet high. You can add stone veneer if it complements your home’s paint scheme. Measure the height of the courtyard from inside the finished grade. Maximum height is limited to 3 feet, 6 inches (42 inches) when the wall is within twenty feet of the front property line or up to 6 feet in height in other locations. Be sure to verify your property lines before construction begins. Refer to SCOV Development Standards for more information: Appendix A, Residential Lot Setback Requirements; Section 2.3, c), i through iii and Section 2.3 f). Outdoor furniture must be placed behind the courtyard walls.

Be sure to check your front door for yours. If you don’t need your book, please return it to the Welcome Center to be reused. See “This Week in SCOV” for the latest details. Congratulations to Janie Johnson Russell for the great cover photograph. How cool are those bee wings? The terrific photographers in this community make the photo selection very difficult. Remember, you can still update your listing in our online directory. The online version is updated monthly, so it has the most current information. To update your listing in the directory, complete the online form “To change your directory listing...” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Special reminder: The second annual Great Reads is Thursday, November 14, 10 AM-Noon, Activity Center/Navajo and Hohokam Rooms. Our special friend and book reviewer, B.J. Kass, will be presenting another group of must reads. There will be coffee, tea and mid-morning treats. This event is for members of Friends of the Library. If you’re not a member, you can join now in the library, and your membership will be good through 2020. Membership in Friends of the Library gives you many benefits: Great Reads events, early purchase of Home Tour tickets and discounted bus tickets to the Tucson Festival of Books. But the most important benefit is knowing you have contributed to the running of our library and the purchase of new books, audios and videos. All the materials in the library are purchased with money from fundraising: membership in Friends, the Home Tour, sale of books in the library and donations from residents like you. Thank you for using, enjoying and contributing to our library.

Fall is here, and residents are back after being away for several months, and many new people are coming to us for the first time. The Loan Room is a free service available to all SCOV residents offering items such as tables and chairs, beds, children’s safety and toy items, and all types of medical equipment. A complete list of available items is on the website. Anyone borrowing from the Loan Room must sign a Liability Waiver form. You may sign it when you borrow, make a reservation or just come in to sign it. These will be kept in your file, so it only needs to be signed once. Be sure to bring your current SCOV card as we will be verifying your ID number and address. A fob will not work in the Loan Room, and spouses cannot sign for each other. We look forward to seeing you as you get ready to participate in all the activities in our area.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Thank You, Thank You! Not often enough do we say “thank you” to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Neighborhood Pride issues thanks to all homeowners who: • keep trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • keep trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • keep plants trimmed back off sidewalks • keep their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • make sure all lights are burning in house number plates Neighborhood Pride has been a viable and hard-working volunteer committee for 15 years this month, and the hard work and countless hours of time from our members have helped to make SCOV a beautiful place in which to live. Thanksgiving is a good time to sincerely thank all homeowners and say, “Thank you, thank you!”

Through petition (prior to January 1): If you would like to be placed on the ballot through the petition process, you must be a member in good standing with a written certification of eligibility from the General Manager, and complete a petition with signatures of 25 Association members in good standing. A copy of the petition is available from the Administration office. Once the petition is received, the General Manager will certify eligibility. Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)
Our Squad A co-leader, David Ilse, was recruited to the Posse by his uncle, Kent Barker, shortly after he and his wife, Sherokee, bought their home in SCOV. Originally he was a member of Squad E and eventually a co-leader along with Richard Mueller. Due to fewer Posse members it was decided to roll Squad E members into Squad A and only have four squads. David became Squad A’s leader. For the past three years he worked with Posse chair Linda Simōn as a co-leader until she became the Posse chair in May. Fortunately for the Posse, David recruited a friend, Tom Garlinghouse, to become our newest Squad A co-leader. Welcome Tom! David, like so many SCOV volunteers, is involved in many things in our community. One is the SCOV Gun Club of which he’s been the chairman for a number of years. David also spends time in Minnesota and enjoys hunting and fishing. He’s just welcomed a new granddaughter to his family. David is committed to the community and the Posse and encourages everyone to join our ranks. Six hours a year, two three-hour patrols, is all the commitment we ask. Join us, you are wanted.

Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values Chair Don Stewart 618-980-3878 bethsdad81@gmail.com Second and forth Fri., 2 PM, WC1
What’s in a name? The header bar above is the name in our charter issued by the SCOV Board. We adopted the acronym PREVAIL (Preserve Real Estate Values and Inhance Lifestyle). We are often referred to simply as The Views committee. This summer only three or four permanent improvement requests to the ARC resulted in 100-foot notification letters concerning possible view impediment being sent to neighbors. Good news: None of these situations resulted in any views being impeded. Bad news: The members of PREVAIL who were here this summer had no opportunities to apply their model for view preservation. At the resumption of meetings in September we determined a course of action to test our model for fairness, accuracy and consistency before moving on to views impeded by vegetation. Next meeting is Friday, November 8. Welcome back to seasonal residents.
Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1
November marks the third anniversary of the start up of the SCOV solar project. The eight systems with a total capacity of 426 kilowatts are located throughout our common area parking lots and roofs. Solar provides about 60% of the electrical needs at SCOV-owned facilities. The systems were installed without cost to SCOV and provide a net savings to the Association when compared with purchasing power from TEP. The systems have web-based monitoring that allows nearly real-time viewing of each system’s power output, energy generation, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions avoided, as well as summary reports of daily and monthly performance. The solar project was investigated and directed by the Properties Committee over a three-year period. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 21.

There are many activities and events planned for our residents and pass holders this season. On Wednesday, November 6, we are hosting Yappy Hour. It’s a happy hour for dogs and their parents to mingle and have fun on the driving range tee from 4-5:30 PM with special happy hour pricing on drinks and free treats for the dogs. Our annual Welcome Back Fiesta/Demo Day party with Charlie’s famous barbeque is Friday, November 8, 11 AM-3 PM, at the driving range. Golf equipment from Cobra, Srixon, Cleveland and XXIO, along with footwear from Puma and Skechers, will be available, all at special discounted pricing. The annual Pro-Member Invitational is Monday, November 25. More information and registration will be available soon. The month of November for Annual Pass Holders includes a 10-minute complimentary golf lesson. Please contact Tim or Tom in the Pro Shop to book your lesson. Our goal is to introduce casual and non-golfer residents to The Views Golf Club through traditional and non-traditional activities and events. Join us every Thursday afternoon for our Chipping and Putting league with food and drinks afterward. Visit the Pro Shop for more information about how to participate in the fun. Also, don’t forget every Friday and Saturday, November through April, we have Charlie’s Barbeque Grille at the turn from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 The first part of November is when the golf course has dried up from the large amount of water used during overseeding. The ground is firm enough to allow the golf carts off the paths and on to the fairways. Cart traffic has been controlled the last few years using a system of blue stakes to direct golf carts on and off the paths. This would be a good time to refresh everyone on the rules associated with the blue stake gates to help minimize confusion. Each hole, excluding the par 3’s, will have a set of blue stakes at the start of the hole and at the end of the hole. These are “gates” where golf carts will pass through to both leave and return to the cart path. Once the cart leaves the path through the gate it will drive straight to the fairway. The cart will remain in the fairway until it either reaches the end of the fairway where it will leave through the exit gate, or if driving the rest of the fairway is unnecessary then exit at any time 90 degrees straight to the cart path. The goal of directing the golf carts on to the fairways is to keep the traffic in the roughs to a minimum. When the roughs go dormant in the winter they can’t recover and start to get smashed down. The system has worked well the last several years, and the roughs held up much better for the winter season.

Golf Advisory Chair Beth Allen 520-639-8845 Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3
Welcome back to all who left for the summer months. Our leagues are in full swing once again. Golf carts are now allowed back on the fairways. Remember to switch out your divot mix for the fall/winter season. Divot mix will not be used on Hole #2. Please keep your cart on the path when around the greens. We would like to encourage all golfers to practice a prompt pace of play. As all of our leagues have grown in membership, this is important. Pace of play affects all players. Be prepared in advance for each stroke; move promptly between strokes and in going to the next tee. After a player is able to play without interference or distraction, the stroke should be made in no more than 40 seconds (or less). The rules of ready golf are also encouraged. Simply put, ready golf is when each golfer within a group hits their ball when ready, rather than adhering to the principle that the farthest from the hole plays first. If you have questions or concerns regarding the golf course contact your league club representative: 18-Hole Men’s Club: Kevin Devaney, 9-Hole Men’s Club: Gary Gibson, 18Hole Women’s Club: Ruth Bonfiglio, 9-Hole Women’s Club: Louann Convey and Member at Large: Steve Parker. You are welcome to attend our meetings the first Wednesday of the month.

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.
Knit and Crochet Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 sigridkf@gmail.com Tue., 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge
If you are interested in crocheting sleeping mats made out of plastic grocery bags for the homeless, please join us. Jane Fairchild has started a group who are doing just that. They have joined the Knit and Crochet group on Tuesday afternoons. Needed are plastic grocery bags, not the newspaper bags, for this project. If you would like to find out about helping, please join us to see if it might be something in which you would like to participate. Besides crocheters, people are needed to cut the bags into strips and tie the strips into yarn, so one doesn’t have to know how to crochet. This is definitely a worthwhile project to reduce plastic waste. For more information call Jane Fairchild, 520-909-5069.

Sculpture Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-606-8829 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
The sculpture group meets on Mondays in the Art Studio in Catalina Vista. Outside the Art Studio you can see some of our sculptures in the display case. If you are interested in becoming a member, we would be happy to show you the process used in creating our art. Just stop by and see us on Mondays. When sculpting, it is so important to look at the project from all angles and in different light. In the picture, Dale Foster is using an adjustable sculpture stand. On the left, Dale is sitting and can see the side and underside of his project. On the right, raising the stand allows Dale to stand and see the top and sides. Since the top of the stand turns, it allows the sculptor the ability to see all aspects of the project. The sculpture group has several stands for members to use.

We encourage you to check out any of the clubs under the Thimblelenas umbrella: Casa Amigas, Cheer Bears, Machine Embroidery, Quilters, Seniors for Kids and Tapestry Rug Hooking. Not interested in joining a specific club? That’s okay, too. The Sewing Room can be used by any Thimblelenas member when there is no other scheduled activity. In order to continue to sew clothing, quilts and tote bags for children in need, we count on donations from the community. If you have fabric or yarn that is taking up closet space, please consider donating to Casa Amigas. We can use all kinds of fabric, but mainly cotton. As we sort through the donations, we determine the best use for the fabric. Many times it will go to another club within Thimblelenas, or we will donate the fabric to another charity that will use the fabric. Seldom will a donation go to waste. Please bring donations to the Sewing Room during the hours posted and do not leave donations outside. Thanks to all of you who have donated in the past.

This month we recognize Lorraine and Rudy Poklar for their outstanding work with Seniors for Kids. Lorraine and Rudy came to SCOV in 2001 and recently transitioned to another local community. Rudy had been an electrical engineer in his former life, Lorraine and Rudy Poklar and Lorraine served young people well as a teacher. Rudy joined the Woodworking Club immediately and Lorraine’s love of sewing drew her to the Sewing Room. They both spend many hours creating toys to be delivered to children each Christmas. Rudy and Lorraine have been wonderful assets to the SCOV community. If helping children in need would get your creative juices flowing, stop by these artisan rooms and see where your skills might help Seniors for Kids provide cheer to children. Look closely in this Tipster, as we announce “Kuddles for Kids” and feature Seniors for Kids on page 4 and two flyers in the center inserts. We in SCOV have so much to give. Tapestry Rug Hooking

The Tapestry Rug Hooking group meets Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. We welcome new members. If you are interested in hooking, our club provides materials and instruction. Learn more about our group by visiting our website or come by on Tuesday mornings. Recently, we had a new person join our group. As John Shaw was providing instruction, it was a reminder to all the group members of the steps you must take to get started with a project. The first step is to practice pulling the wool strips through the rug warp cloth. After one feels comfortable with the movement, it is time to choose a design. The picture shows the design chosen and the material to be used. The next step is to transfer the design to the material by using transfer paper or drawing directly on the material by hand. We are frequently asked by SCOV residents, clubs and HOA functions if someone in the club can make or repair an item for them. Here’s the answer: Normally, club members work only on their own projects, and most are unable or reluctant to take on other projects. That said, there is a good chance the repair can be done by the monitor or another person in the shop, especially if the repair is fairly simple and straightforward. More details are available at the club website in the News tab. Now the good news: The club is going to try something new. One evening a month, starting Thursday, November 21, 6-9 PM, a group of members will be at the shop to help residents with repairs and simple projects. On our website you will also find a form with the details of what we will need to better help you.

Poetry can be philosophical using esoteric references to famous people and their works, but Poets Corner member, Adrian Korpel, takes a lighter, more comic approach to his summing up of the various stages of one’s life in “Clarifications,” that it is easily appreciated and not quite as simple as it may seem: “Of the shortness of life / and the longing for love / it has all been expressed/by the hawk and the dove. Of the rudeness of youth / and the crudeness of age / it has all been made clear / by the clown and the sage. Of the love in my heart / and my thinking of you / it has all been explained / by the magic and true.” All resident poets are invited to join us Monday mornings as we share our thoughts, dreams, stories, protests and often vent our emotions on paper. It’s a wonderful way to begin the week and improve your output.

WAG OV’s mission is to promote positive, progressive political change on issues affecting women and families. We were deeply saddened by the tragic loss in August of founding WAG member Marge Brown, her husband Dick and their sweet dog, Orion, in a traffic accident. We will continue to follow a progressive path forward, with Marge as our role model. WAG starts up again on Friday, November 1, after enjoying a summer break for the past three months. Regular monthly meetings are on first Fridays at Catalina Vista. We look forward to welcoming back our returning winter residents. Two excellent instructors are here at the SCOV AFC twice a week teaching Joseph Pilates group mat classes. Each class participant, regardless of their exercise level, is striving to increase their core strength. Core muscles are deep abdominal and back muscles that help stabilize our pelvis and spine. The Pilates exercises are simple and each class begins with low-impact warm-up exercises, stretching and deep breathing. The instructors oversee us at all times. They modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. These classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you’re stronger), energy and well being. Please join us or come by and watch a class. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Call Mary with any questions.

Some have questioned that we use “Sundowners” for the name of SCOV’s RV club. It turns out there are a few different definitions for “Sundowners,” and not just about persons A Sundowner shows up late at the sheep farm with dementia. Another definition comes from New Zealand, referencing a laborer who shows up at a sheep farm late in the day, on the pretext of offering work in exchange for food and lodging, but comes too late to provide much help. And a third definition is a drink taken at sunset. We prefer the drink, a shared moment between RVers at the end of the day. Save the dates: General meeting, Monday, November 11; Chili Fest, Sunday, November 17; Holiday party, Sunday, December 15. Sign up on SundownersRVclub.org. To date, we’ve provided over 2,200 bikes to various other 501(c)(3) charities who then distribute the bikes to their clients. Some of our partner organizations are Youth On Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus and Tucson Boys and Girls Club. Wheels for Kids is a total volunteer effort. We need mechanics. If you are interested, we’ll train you. Visit our website for more information and how to donate bikes or financial support. Help kids experience the same joy you had when you got your first bike.
YOTO/Northwest Auxiliary Kris Cohen 520-818-2582 krisandearl@msn.com You can help Youth On Their Own (YOTO), the Tucson non-profit, strive to eliminate barriers to education and empower local homeless youth, homeless through no fault of their own, to stay in school. How? Bring $25 gift cards or new twin-sized blankets to the AC lobby on Friday, December 6, or Monday, December 9, between 9-11 AM. Cash and checks to YOTO are accepted. For 30-plus years, YOTO has supported the high school graduation of this unique demographic by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and one-on-one guidance. Through community support over 16,000 homeless youth have remained in school and pursued opportunities for selfsufficiency.
