From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Establishing Goals—With Your In-Put by Jon Olson Last spring the SCOV Board of Directors adopted a set of goals for 2014-2015 including some specific strategies and tactics to aid in the achievement of these goals. This was in response to a shift in Board thinking toward establishing more far-reaching (beyond one year) goals and the development of strategies and tactics that could be used by our many committees to aid them in doing their work. This fall the Board will revisit our goals, amending them as necessary, including the establishment of additional strategies and tactics that will be passed along to our committees for consideration. We encourage community participation in this process and invite you to attend our study sessions as we seek input to our work plan for the coming year. Our task as board members, as stated in our governing documents, is to maintain and enhance the quality of our lives and community property in order to increase the desirability for our current members, as well as prospective buyers, to enjoy to the fullest what SCOV has to offer. Some issues that will be considered during our study sessions will be to ask the Finance and Budget Committee to review, and hopefully recommend, a two-year operating budget cycle, as well as a three-to-five year capital plan identifying funding sources for future facility remodeling and expansion. We also will ask the Long Range Planning Committee to look into the future of our housing stock and care of our common areas. We will be asking the Governing Documents Committee to continue their work reviewing our Articles of Incorporation, our CC & Rs and our bylaws. Some of these documents have not been reviewed for a number of years and there are contradictions between them that need clarification. All in all, we have 21 committees made up of volunteer members who do much of the work that makes SCOV the wonderful community it is. Remember all of our committee meetings are open for you to attend, all post minutes online as are the agendas for upcoming meetings. Being a responsible member of our community carries the expectation of your involvement in the governance process. We welcome each of you to join in this endeavor.

Summer Projects Considerable information has been included in my weekly reports about the numerous projects that have been in process this summer and are now nearly all completed. Among these projects is the refreshing of several restrooms. Little or nothing has been done to the Posse, outside AFC, Artisan, Tennis Court and Catalina Vista restrooms for many years. As a result, these restrooms were revamped using planned-asset reserve funds. The work completed on these restrooms included new tile in most cases, sinks, toilets, fixtures and counters. The colors and design in these facilities blend well with the new Fitness Center scheme which has received numerous compliments from the membership. Along with the restrooms, the erosion control projects in Chalk Creek Wash were completed. Two of these projects in Unit 7 and 18 were designed by WLB engineering. They included considerable excavation and installation of rip rap. Most of this work was done to protect residential lots that border the wash. Through the heavy rain in mid-September the substantial water flow from recent storms has had little impact on the areas that were improved. Considerable time, energy and funds were also invested in improving the audio/visual system in the Auditorium and Native American rooms. Without going into a lot of detail, the work that was completed will improve the quality of sound and projections. Part of this project required floor boxes to be installed in the Native American rooms which in turn required new carpet to be installed. Two major projects that, unfortunately, will not be completed by the end of the summer are the new pickleball and bocce courts. These projects have been delayed due to a series of issues including a change in the location of the new bocce courts, a longer period of time to develop plans by the contractor than expected and a slightly more difficult and longer plan-review process than expected by the Town. Of all of the projects that were planned for this summer, these were the ones that we most wanted to complete before the end of summer. I apologize for this delay and ask for your patience with a process that has taken much longer than anticipated.

As our homes age, more maintenance is required. This may or may not be true of the roof. When maintaining the roof, a couple of choices can be made. The area needing repair can be fixed using existing/replacement tiles or all of the tiles can be replaced. When using existing tiles, the problem occurs in trying to match the color of a 20 year or older roof. Every effort should be made to try and match the tiles as closely as possible. In addition, the replacement tiles should be installed at the lowest possible point on the roof. The old tiles can then be used in a more visible area of the roof, most likely where the repair occurred. This approach will minimize the visibility of the new tiles from the street. Your Government Affairs Committee planned to sponsor three Candidate Forums in September and October prior to the early ballots for the General Election being mailed. While every effort was made, the Democratic and Republican candidates for Governor and US Congress/District One declined our invitation. In both instances, the candidates previously agreed to a limited number of forums and/or debates. We continue to coordinate with the Oro Valley and Marana Chambers of Commerce on the only Pima County forum to be attended by US Congressional Candidates for District One, Ann Kirkpatrick (D) and Andy Tobin (R). Information will be provided as available via postings on the Bulletin Boards and in Bob Mariani’s weekly newsletter. We are pleased to announce that House candidates Mark Finchem (R), Vince Leach (R) and Holly Lyons (D) and Senate Candidates Jo Holt (D) and Steve Smith (R) for Arizona Legislative District 11 have readily agreed to attend a candidate forum on Friday, October 3, 1 PM, Auditorium. Loan Room - Community Assistance

Aluminum Can Donations: put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Please continue to save your aluminum cans because this supports our Loan Room, providing a way to purchase new equipment as needed. On August 19, we made the first trip of the fiscal year and delivered 580 pounds of aluminum cans, for which we received $342. We need to make sure all new residents are aware of our recycling program, so please, if you have new neighbors, advise them of this program. The Loan Room is operated by the Community Assistance Committee and is a free service to SCOV residents. It is funded by recycling of aluminum cans throughout our community and the annual Pancake Breakfast. The Loan Room provides medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats, etc. We also loan rollaways, cots for children, tables and chairs, car seats and some children’s toys. We are open from 8-9 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. Reservations can be made at the Loan Room and, beginning in November, by telephone. Long Range Planning Committee/Ad Hoc LRPC Task Team

The Long Range Planning Committee is working on an ad-hoc project for the Board of Directors. We are creating a proposal for relocating our Pro Shop while also making it smaller and more efficient. The intent is to provide additional space for an expanded Café/Lounge. Before we present our proposal to the Board, we will present it to residents in a public forum on Saturday, November 8, 2 PM, Auditorium. Are you a new homeowner, or did you just return from being away for awhile? The monsoon season this year caused trees, grasses, shrubs and weeds to really grow. Preemergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds, and you won’t have as many weeds next year. Check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Don’t forget to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, sidewalk and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need trimming back so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at corners need trimming so stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should also be cut off down to the ground. Take a close look from the street – can you see the numbers on your house, day and night? For safety sake, trim back any plant, or change light bulbs, if your house number is not clearly visible. This is important should an emergency vehicle need to find you. Golder Ranch Fire Department, in partnership with the Posse, has provided medical information forms which contain vital medical information and emergency contact information for paramedics in the event of a medical emergency in your home. These forms and pouches are available near the monitor station in all of our common area buildings. All residents are encouraged to pick up these forms and pouches, fill out the form, place in the pouch and hang it on your refrigerator door. Properties

Auditorium Audio, Visual & Lighting
You may have already experienced the audio, visual and lighting improvements in the Auditorium. Our first installed AV system, donated by the Sun City Foundation, started us down the road to projecting images of our Association and club meetings. In this upgrade we have added some new features. First, there are now three ceiling mounted projectors. They project HD (high definition) quality images on our new wide format screens. The two new cameras also produce HD quality images which make our events bright and clear. We also changed some of the stage lighting to higher efficiency, lower heat output and set up some light presets for presenters and other common uses in the Auditorium to make the set up a little easier. Special thanks to resident David Smoler for working with me in developing the request for proposal and interfacing with the installation company. His expertise has been invaluable. Also special thanks to residents John Allen and Wade Gonzalez and employee Doug Healy for providing input on the various uses. Their input was helpful in determining the needs of our users and in designing the system. We are now in the process of learning the new equipment, preparing the record footage and turning that footage into something usable like a movie for the website, YouTube or a DVD. We will also be further developing our tech team, so if you have an interest in videography, please let me know. I hope you have enjoyed the new system. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius
Time To Get Ready
The golf cart holiday parade was a huge success last year, and I have had many requests to repeat the event. I am announcing it now so you can get ready in time. The parade will be Saturday, December 20. Everyone who entered last year had a great time, and all carts showed some real creativity. One thing that was lacking was residents watching along the parade route. In some areas we saw groups of residents gathered on driveways having a get-together to have fun and watch the parade go by. In many areas we saw no one. I urge you to look at the parade route on

To some of us, the SCOV CC&Rs and Development Standards are familiar and well-understood. To others, they are believed to represent some onerous requirements that tie our hands or restrict our rights. It has been suggested by the wise, that knowledge is what frees us. Perhaps this opinion has an application here in SCOV. In future articles, some nuggets drawn from our governing documents will be discussed. To start, directions on how to access the current governing documents on our website are as follows: Use a web browser, such as Google, to go to our website homepage www.scovaz.com. Go to the menu bar on our homepage and click and hold down Association. A drop-down menu appears. Click on Governing Documents. Scroll down to the documents and supporting forms used for various submittals. It is especially important to get to know the rules found in the Development Standards as you entertain any future renovation ideas for your home. Lack of frustration, because you know in advance what the standards require, can make a big difference in making your updates and renovation an enjoyable experience. While you are at it, explore other areas of the website. You will be amazed at how much information is at your fingertips. It’s good to see so many familiar faces in the Library back from summer away. Besides finding returning friends in the Library, there are a lot of new titles. In fiction we have Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good the new Mitford novel by Jan Karon, and Edge of Eternity: Book Three of the Century Trilogy by Ken Follett. In nonfiction, Killing Patton by Bill O’Reilly has arrived. Personal, the newest Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child is available in both audio book and print fiction. Recent purchases in large print include The Kraken Project by Douglas Preston and One Plus One by Jojo Moyes. Finding good movies available on DVD/Bluray has been a challenge lately. I hope things improve through the fall, but for now you can find Chef with John Favreau, Draft Day with Kevin Costner, and Godzilla (let’s see how it compares to the 1954 original). We hope you had a great summer and are ready for another fun season at The Views Golf Club. The staff is certainly ready for another busy year and we are eager to serve our annual pass holders and residents to the very best of our ability. The Golf Now program continues to be a success as does inviting outside groups to experience our spectacular golf course. These groups will be booked around our annual pass holder times as much as possible. Please remember that pass holders do have a nine-day advanced booking option. The golf course is currently closed for overseeding and will reopen Friday, October 10. After October 10 tee times on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be from 7:30 AM. Tuesday’s shotgun will be 11:30 AM and will include The 18-Hole Ladies Club and limited open play (so pass holders please take advantage of your advance booking option on this day) Thursday’s Shotgun will be 8 AM, 9-Hole clubs only, 11 AM open play. Until October 31, play will be cart path only.

In order to protect the immature grass, all traffic, pedestrian or vehicular, must remain on the cart paths from now until October 31. We would greatly appreciate your assistance. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. Once play resumes, please ensure that you abide by the walking signs that are posted for your convenience. If you are an evening rider or walker, keep in mind that you cannot enter the golf course until 5 PM, and you will be sharing the facility with golfers. So please be cautious and courteous. Superintendent - Michael Kropf October is the official start of the winter season in regards to golf course maintenance. Now that the summer has ended, it’s a good time to look at what was accomplished by the golf course maintenance department. This summer the transition in June was the best it has been in several years so not a lot of work was required to re-grass fairways. This freed up a lot of time to work on other areas. The first project completed was the reshaping of the grass trap on the right side of #17 green. Golfers complained about it always being wet and unplayable so with the new shape the water surface drains away from the green and allows for a more playable shot onto the green. Next project was the wash work on #5 fairway. The wash was dredged and reshaped to allow better flow of water away from the turf. We have had several storms that caused the wash to flow and no sand touched the turf on either #4 or #5, so that project was a success. The ponds were dredged in late August. Over 100 yards of mud was removed from around both intake pipes in each pond. This will prevent sand and debris from entering the irrigation system causing damage to the pumps and irrigation parts. To finish the summer, three tees were built for the new combo tees to be implemented this winter. A lot was accomplished this summer, and all these projects will make the golf course even better. Our beautiful course will open October 10 after overseeding is completed. Five new elevated tee boxes are either built or in the process of completion by our golf course maintenance staff. These new tee boxes will give all levels of golfers additional alternatives of play and will hopefully increase revenue. The golf course irrigation pond issues are in the planning stages for May or June 2015. These issues were anticipated and budgeted. Deb Cofer SCOV Artist of many talents If you walk into the SCOV Gift Shop when Deb’s working, and ask her what she makes, she’ll tell you, “My passion is primarily knitting and crocheting. “I love creating adorable baby and toddler gifts, including baby hats and booties, fun animal hats, cowboy boots and spring dresses. Nearly everything I make is from my own patterns, and I strive to use yarn that can be machine washed and dried. “As a grandmother, I can tell you how cute our little ones are when they wear these hats and booties.” Deb might even pull out a photo of her granddaughter to show you. Deb says, “Another favorite of mine is this unique and popular ‘short hoodie scarf.’ I make them with Americanmade yarn, and they’re machine washable. I also knit matching fingerless gloves I call ‘wristies.’ They’re great for freeing your fingers so you can take photos in the cold while keeping the rest of your hand toasty. One set made it all the way to Antarctica. “As a member of the ceramic club, I enjoy making western steer-head magnets and hand painted spoon rests that make great gifts for visitors to take home. On the steer heads I use extra strong magnets. Recently, I started making copper jewelry with a focus on wire and spiral wrapping. I use copper wire with a tarnishresistant coating. This lets me create jewelry in bright and vibrant colors, that resist tarnishing.”

Want Additional Landscaping Work Done Beyond Your Property?
SCOV has a program to handle plant encroachment on common areas behind many SCOV properties. This occurs on a schedule. However, if you would like landscaping to occur ahead of schedule or have additional work done on ASSOCIATION land, there is a process for doing that. It’s called the Pre-Qualified Landscaper Program. An application must be submitted and approved before any work can be done. Donate Your Used Computer Ink Cartridges
Don’t throw away your used ink cartridges. Put them to good use by depositing them in a basket in the Welcome Center outside the Computer Learning Center. The Vistoso Computer Society delivers them to Coronado K-8 school‘s PTO (Parent Teachers Organization). The PTO recycles the cartridges to fund a multitude of projects. Letting Go to America by M. Evelina Galang, who teaches in and directs the Creative Writing Program at the University of Miami. Galang was named one of the 100 most influential Filipinas in the United States by Filipina Women’s Network. Judy Carlson will lead discussion of Absence, by Peruvianborn Daniel Alarcon, on October 15. In 2010, Alarcon was named to the list of twenty great North American writers under the age of 40 by The New Yorker. The November 5 discussion of Mother the Big, by Iranianborn Porochista Khakpour, will be led by Sharyn Rafieyan. Khakpour received a Creative Writing Fellowship grant for prose from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2012. No dues for the 2014-2015 season.

At our October meeting we will discuss Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. What if you could live again and again, until you got it right? On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born, the third child of a wealthy English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in any number of ways. At our November meeting we will discuss Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking by Anya Von Bremzen, Born in 1963, in an era of bread shortages, Anya grew up in a communal Moscow apartment where eighteen families shared one kitchen. When Anya was ten, she and her mother, Larisa, fled the political repression of Brezhnev-era Russia, arriving in Philadelphia with no winter coats and no right of return. It’s been a busy summer with new players joining the club and all of us anticipating those three new courts. We have been assured that they will be built this year. We’re looking forward to cooler fall weather soon so we will be able to play a little later in the mornings. How should we react to the impact on our minds, our hearts, our government and our nation? Surely the ripples of an action so tragic will not be quickly stilled. Poetry provides an outlet for expressing such emotions as evidenced by In the Absence of Sparrows penned by Foley’s long-time friend Daniel Johnson. The opening line is dynamite: “Rockets concuss. Guns rattle off.” Then a plaintive sadness sneaks in: “When did you last see birds? The winter sky in Boston is gray with flu… It’s night, cold and bruised, where you are. Plastic twine binds your hands. You wait and pray, pray and wait, but this is where the picture goes gray. We don’t know, Jim, where you are.” Poetry is a healing potion for writer and reader to share.
