Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors wilsonjend1961@gmail.com Good Neighbors by John Wilson The word “neighbor” is rather noncommittal in its connotation. It generally indicates a physical proximity between homes, and hence, homeowners, but it does not necessarily imply anything more than that. In contrast, prefacing with an adjective surely adds much deeper meaning to the word. Good neighbor retains the notion of physical proximity, but much more than that, it connotes that a feeling of friendliness, mutual respect and helpfulness exists between the parties. Though all of us have neighbors, I think all of us would count ourselves blessed if our neighbors were all good neighbors. And, of course, that goes both ways. Are we just neighbors, or good neighbors? What started me thinking more about the concept of “neighbors” was the survey last spring, seeking to identify “how residents feel about views in SCOV and how big an issue it is when growing plants and house additions start blocking views” (quotes from the report compiled by the ad hoc committee conducting the survey). Eighteen percent of SCOV residents responded. I am reluctant to attach too much significance to such a limited representation of SCOV residents, but in any case my focus here is not on how many are concerned about obstruction of views or what is causing the obstruction. Rather, I am more interested in how such concerns are addressed. And for the present purposes, I wish to consider not just obstructed views but, more generally, any matter that has potential for negatively affecting relationships between neighbors. It is obvious that nothing will happen unless both parties are aware of the concern. So, the first step should be communication between neighbors. “Hey, Charlie, I’d like to talk with you about something. Your dog does a lot of barking and it’s getting to be a real problem for us. Do you think you could do something about it?” When approached in a friendly open manner, I’d like to think that most of us would respond accordingly, and seek to resolve any point of contention with our neighbors. In other words, to respond as a “good neighbor.” Of course, this may not always happen

and, if the point of contention actually involves a violation of regulations in our governing documents, recourse to enforcement procedures through administrative structure is available. But one hopes that such recourse would be rare, and that “good neighbors” would communicate and amicably resolve such matters.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Critical Component—Insurance: Ours and Yours Here at SCOV we have two types of commercial insurance coverage: property and liability. Property insurance covers loss of or damage to any common structures or physical property caused by fire, flood, storms or other natural events. For instance, if high winds uproot a tree that damages a common roof, the Association’s property insurance would cover the cost of repairs. Property insurance may also cover what we call fidelity (such as theft). Liability insurance covers losses that would result if someone took legal action against the Association for an injury or other type of damage. For example, one important type of liability insurance, called Directors’ and Officers’ insurance, covers volunteers like Board and committee members so they’re not jeopardizing their personal assets to serve the Association. The Association’s insurance does not cover owners or residents, their homes or belongings. Each member should have his or her own insurance policy. If you need information about homeowners insurance, talk to a licensed insurance agent who specializes in homeowners associations. Or you may want to talk to the Association’s insurance provider; this person will know exactly where the Association’s master policy coverage ends and where yours should begin. This prevents you from over or under insuring yourself. If you’d like his contact information, drop me an email at the above address with the request and I’ll see that you get it.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Marketing 101 Marketing begins with the identification of a need: to promote SCOV as a place to live, play and have friends. Your Association has put into place a plan to accomplish this objective. A plan has been developed with measurable goals. The Board has allocated funds to execute the plan. There’s a committee that meets monthly during the high season to look at the big picture and take on special projects such as the solar dedication or the remodeling forum. Staff works year round formulating and processing the plan, developing ads, communicating with current and potential residents about the many benefits of living, eating and playing in SCOV. If you’re interested in learning more about the marketing of SCOV, please consider attending a Marketing Committee meeting and remember that in SCOV, It’s More Than Living... It’s a Lifestyle!

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 New Things Happening I hope you are enjoying the great lineup of free events. In addition, I am pleased to have teamed up with TAD Management to bring you some great new fee-based shows starting the first of the year. Feel free to go their website to see the amazing shows we can bring here. I look forward to these events in early 2018: “One of These Nights,” a salute to the Eagles, “ABBA Waiting for the outdoor movie to start on Fab,” a salute to ABBA September 16. It was a beautiful night. and “The Piano Man,” a salute to Billy Joel, later in the year. TAD Management shows appear on cruise ships and have become popular in Southern Arizona adult communities. I am told that these shows sell out quickly, necessitating a waiting list, so get your tickets early for all shows. We also have planned some new free events. In January, I will publish a list of dates for you to save. You won’t want to miss one of these many events. I am looking for a volunteer to host the annual cookie exchange on December 8. If interested, please call me.

experience such things as the daily traffic of delivery trucks, parking on the sidewalks by contractors, improperly stored building materials and discarded debris that blows into adjacent yards. The nuisance factor is amplified by lengthy timelines that stretch into months. We would like to heighten the awareness of what is expected of residents and their contractors. The following list is a reminder: • Residents shall be responsible for the actions of their contractors. • Debris should be disposed of daily or shall be kept in a tarped container. A clean work site is important. • Building materials should be stored out of sight in the garage or in the backyards of homes. • Contractors are encouraged to be respectful of the neighbors. Aprons and adjacent sidewalks are not designed to support heavy vehicles, and parking should be on the blacktop. Sidewalk repairs are the responsibility of residents. Driveways should not be blocked. Parking of trucks to prevent safety concerns should be addressed using safety cones, etc. • The Town of Oro Valley Town Code 10-1-4 Noise outlines the allowed times of operation of heavy equipment and other construction activities. • Our Master Declaration 4.5 Nuisance provides the authority for enforcement of these policies.

Place your old shoes on a table or flat surface and look at them from the back. If they lean inward or outward or show signs of excessive wear like badly worn edges of the soles, it’s probably time for a new pair. Even if they look like they’re in good shape, if you’ve logged 300 to 400 miles (or after three to six months) in them, or if you start to notice pain in your feet, ankle, legs, or knees, even though you haven’t changed your exercise routine, worn-out shoes may be a factor. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Desert Oasis is closed for renovations. Tuesday, October 10, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Architectural Review is your go-to committee if you are having residential problems. If your concern is covered by either the Master Declaration or the Development Standards, then those are the two documents that may help solve a problem. A beginning point in searching to see if your situation is covered will be to peruse the index. Then read the appropriate section to see what rules apply. The Master Declaration is an overarching standard while the Development Standards address the nitty gritty. Both documents are located at suncityorovalley.com > members-login > documents. Should you not find a rule that pertains to your problem, then perhaps it is time for a neighbor-to-neighbor chat. ARC cannot solve all problems. Our primary goal is to help residents make changes to the exterior of their properties and have those changes conform to the standards that have been established for the community.

Food and Beverage Advisory Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-Jun., First Fri., 1 PM, The Views Some interesting facts about our restaurant staff: • One of our wait staff celebrates over 15 years’ service with SCOV. • We have a mother-daughter wait staff team. • Two of our SCOV staff members got married (to each other) on Hole 1 at The Views Golf Course. • Our staff includes two sets of siblings. • Most of our staff also work part time at other places; one currently has four jobs. • One of our managers has worked with six world class chefs, three of whom have been on the Food Network channel (Chefs Maye, McMillian, Weiner) and would trade them all in for Chef Paul Blackwell, our new Executive Chef. Tips from satisfied customers are what wait staff need to make a living. Please support The Views while your restaurant becomes a gathering place of which we can be proud.

Have you read a Gothic tale lately? Or a graphic novel? Maybe some fantasy? October is the month for tricks and treats (and the Library always has some Tootsie Rolls thanks to the generous donation of an SCOV resident family). We also have a new game of Library bingo (thank you to a Library volunteer) that will be fun to play while exploring some new literary genre. Come and join the fun. Remember that your Library depends on the donations of time and money of SCOV residents. Thank you to all who contribute.

October featured artists are Elaine Deeter (left) and Julie Holtry (right). Julie makes jewelry and Orientalthemed note cards. Her trademark is her pendant

dragonfly which dons the necks of many local residents. “I think I have a dragonfly for every outfit I have. They are such fun to wear!” Julie particularly likes to use dichroic glass. This glass almost takes on a gem-like shimmering quality. Elaine began creating greeting cards a few years ago for her personal use. Then, “I decided to start making cards to sell in our Gift Shop. It is a wonderful way to contribute to our community and meet new people. I enjoy seeing people appreciate my work and hearing how their friends and family are happy to receive a handmade item.” Stop in to enjoy the work of all our resident artists and pick up that special gift you have been looking for.

As many of our residents return from their summer trips, we will be getting busier. It is recommended that you make reservations up to two months in advance, especially as we get closer to fall and winter holidays. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, and is located at the end of the Cart Barn. To reserve, visit the website; your request will be responded to within a week. Come and see what we have available.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Just Perhaps Perhaps you didn’t know, or you just forgot, how much foliage grows here in our desert. Our monsoon season this year caused trees, grasses, shrubs and weeds to really grow. Pre-emergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds, and you won’t have as many weeds next year; check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Don’t forget to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, sidewalk, and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need to be trimmed back so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at corners need to be trimmed so stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should be cut off, down to the ground. Take a close look from the street. Can you see the numbers on your house, day and night? For safety sake, trim back any plant, or change light bulbs, if your house number is not clearly visible. This is important should an emergency vehicle need to find you. Please take pride in your property, and, “just perhaps,” SCOV will continue to be a beautiful place in which to live.

During the nightly neighborhood patrols, the Posse finds many RVs (motor homes, trailers, campers, etc.) parked in driveways and on the streets. We stop and record the address, make and model of the RV plus license plate information. Often we observe violations of the local ordinances. As the Posse Chairman I strongly encourage each resident to read the governing documents about RV parking. Find on-line the SCOV Board Policy BOD-011, and Oro Valley Town Code in Article 11-4. These are intended to make our community more enjoyable and safe to live in with our families.

Semiannual inspections of SCOV facilities are one of the Property Committee’s primary functions. The purpose of the inspections is to identify the condition and maintenance needs of SCOV facilities and grounds. Committee members together with HOA maintenance staff will conduct an inspection during October. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. I invite you to meet our professional friendly staff and play our exceptional golf course by contacting the Pro Shop at 520-825-3110. Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 October is the start of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of green on the fairways, tees and greens. This is a good time to remind golfers about changes from summer to winter play. The divot mix will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is to only be used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. This year the green fairway on #6 and the entire #14 fairway will not be overseeded, so please don’t repair divots with seed mix on those holes. The seed will germinate during the winter, and when the Bermuda grass eventually goes dormant those divots will leave green spots all over the non-overseeded fairways. This also applies to all of the roughs since they aren’t overseeded either. It is a small step to help reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots. Another reminder is the course will be very wet following overseeding. Even though the irrigation is slowly turned off prior to the course reopening, the soil will remain very saturated. Golf carts will be regulated to the cart paths for about two weeks to allow the fairways extra time to firm. When the carts are allowed off the paths, please try to avoid driving through low areas that are still wet. Most areas will be painted with white lines, but some areas might still be soft and be damaged by golf cart traffic.

Also, I’ve been a resident of Oro Valley and Southern Arizona for the past 35 years. Food & Beverage Director - Aalt Brouwer abrouwer@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8074

Greetings from The Views Restaurant. We have had some great success over the summer. We introduced a new Executive Chef, Paul Blackwell, who every day is making a difference with the quality of food, timeliness of the kitchen, and better yet, keeps up with a demanding boss. We have introduced karaoke on Sunday nights, which has turned out to be an enormous amount of fun. We have been training our staff on the ins and outs of food and beverage. So far, we have covered beef, seafood, and the basics of wine. Don’t miss our collaboration with the Sun City Variety Theatre group for our inaugural SCOV Octoberfest on Sunday, October 29. This should be a lot of fun with great food, beer, and entertainment. For more information, see page 23. I’m pleased to announce that we are offering our first pairing dinner of the season on Wednesday, November 1, 5 PM. In addition to the three-course dinner with cocktail pairings, Magic Kenny of the Bisbee Séance Room will present the Haunted History of Tucson. As we head into October, we look forward to implementing our new menu from Chef Paul. He has taken the time to assess our guests’ preferences and can’t wait to build you a menu of which we all can be proud.

Our seasonal residents return this month and rejoin their fellow artists for lively chatter of summer doings and to plan the new season’s schedule. Some of us finished a piece or two over the summer, but the heavy work was accomplished by those who braved the summer heat and cooled their heels in our studio each Wednesday. We’re all looking forward to another creative, social, educational and collegial season together. Our Art League theme show entitled “Self Portrait” will adorn the Activity Center walls during October, and residents and guests are invited to come over, view the paintings and decide the respective resemblances. Sculpture

Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-812-0198 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

To all club members that have had the studio all to themselves this summer we say, “move over, because the winter residents are flocking back with pent-up ideas and desire to create new pieces.” It’s time to collect our thoughts and put together a schedule of works and classes for this new season. It’s time to restock materials and clay supplies. This writer is anxious to see the sculptures finished over the summer. Since it’s been so hot for so long, the cool studio should have been a sculptor’s haven and a respite, a place to be on these sizzling days. We invite all residents to visit us on Monday mornings, and we’ll be happy to share our sculpting passion with you.

Sewing Thimblelenas

Penny Burroughs 530-545-2642 Mon.-Fri., 9 AM-Noon and 1-4 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

Have you wanted to do some relaxing sewing with great friends? Let’s get you trained on the machines. Use of the room and equipment requires an hour orientation class for first-time users. You can sign up for the next orientation session and class Friday, October 20, on sheets posted on the outside of the Sewing Room door. Maybe you will be one of those who can’t resist being involved in several groups: Casa Amigas, Sun City Vistoso Quilters, Machine Embroidery, Tapestry Rug Hooking, Cheer Bears, Pet Beds and Seniors for Kids. Casa Amigas

Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 Mon. and Thu., 9 AM-Noon, Artisan Center/Sewing

Rewarding is a good word to describe how we feel sewing for the children. At Casa Amigas, we have the right project for you. If you peek in and see the machines busy, please ask anyone for another little project to help. There is sorting, folding, ironing, cutting, stacking or pinning. Don’t leave; give us a hand. You are always welcome. Any extra yarn (not fancy)? We knit or crochet afghans. Please mark it for Casa Amigas.

to have that morning coffee outside, it’s been awhile. I feel like this air inspires many to begin fall and holiday projects in our studio. Our membership keeps growing, and I see pumpkins, turkeys and witches making appearances. Holiday plates and dishes are beginning to show up also. For our returning members, there will be a short meeting and get-together Monday, October 16. There is a sign-up sheet in the studio for appetizers or dessert. Please join us and find out what is new as we get out of the heat and learn more techniques. Come and renew some old friendships and meet new members. I hope you will look at our window in the studio as there are many new items, so colorful and bright. Thanks to all our volunteers for all they do. The list is long.

The woodworking shop at SCOV has had an active and interesting summer. New equipment has been installed. A new fire-proof cabinet has been installed for safe storage of flammable paint and finish materials. We are always in need of additional monitors so the shop can be open to the members. If you can and are willing to help please contact Don Jovag at 520-818-1078 to get the information for training. Your help is greatly appreciated. On the side of volunteerism, let us put out a call to all who would like to help out with Seniors for Kids. As Christmas approaches, the final push will be made to make cars, trucks, cradles, secret boxes, games and whatever will delight the eyes of children. There are lots of materials available in the shop to create these items. All that is needed is the hands and inspiration. Come in and help out if you feel the urge. Last, but certainly not least, we are looking forward to the return of our migrating members. As summer cools remembered faces and voices will once again be joining us in the shop. If you haven’t come by lately feel free to wander in and see what is happening.

Welcome to a new season for the Great Books Club. In this club we read and discuss selections of thought-provoking works of literature presented in anthologies by the Great Books Foundation. We offer great conversations about great ideas. We will continue reading short story selections from The Seven Deadly Sins, Even Deadlier. The deadly sin we will consider in October is gluttony. On October 4 the selection is “Theft in a Pastry Shop” by Italo Calvino and on October 18 the selection is “Fat People” by Alison Lurie. In December we will begin reading selections from Counterparts, an exciting Great Books collection featuring pairings of texts that complement or play off one another in interesting ways. Both books can be purchased from Amazon or the Great Books Foundation. Join us. We welcome all SCOV residents.

At our October 2 meeting we will discuss Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child by Bob Spitz. This detailed biography of the famous cookbook author and TV star starts at the beginning with her early life in Pasadena. The book covers little-known aspects of her life in the 50 years before she found fame as the cook book author and TV French chef. It draws a picture of the real woman behind the warbling voice and cheery manner and attempts to place her in history for the remarkable impact she had not only on how Americans eat and view food but the pioneering role she played in the development of food TV shows. November: Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. This is the story of a remarkable group of African American women mathematicians who overcame prejudice against their sex and race to make a real contribution to the development of aeronautics during WWII and then went on to provide a major contribution to the Space Race. The book focuses on three brilliant women: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson, who with sheer determination, support of family and some of their white male colleagues go on to achieve their goals in mathematics and engineering at National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and later National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

BOO! Yes, it is almost Halloween again. It’s also almost time for the first fall ILR course. Gene Bammel will start the term off Monday, October 2, 11:30 AM, with “50 Years After the Death of God.” Make sure you know when your classes begin and where and what time they are held. Pick up the cloth bag you prepared with your ILR name tag, pen/pencil, notebook/paper and water bottle as you head out the door to go to class. In case you have not heard, the “Almost President” course has been cancelled. Samplers begin this month too, on Thursday, October 5. About Samplers Just in case you’re unfamiliar with “Samplers,” it’s a 1½ hour ILR program designed to satisfy your intellectual curiosity and enrich your mind—goals that remain critically important in retirement. Topics are selected for diversity and interest to SCOV residents. They range from current political and social issues to topics in the fields of art, science, history, archeology, health and medicine, journalism, psychology and neuroscience, and more. They often report cutting edge research. Our presenters are drawn from SCOV residents, the U of A faculty and other public figures. Their talks are designed for a lay audience and allow time for questions and discussion. Sampler presentations are open to all SCOV residents and their guests. There are no fees, and registration is not required. During fall and winter terms, Samplers are presented each Thursday, 2 PM, Catalina Vista. The schedule for the fall term is available in an insert in this Tipster and the ILR website.

Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 9:30-11:30 AM, WC1

Poets have been known to share thoughts and even feelings that others mostly hide, though not everything they write reflects the truth about their lives. Readers tend to respond to the authenticity of expression as in “Survival” by Peggy Barnes-Phifer, a newcomer to our Corner but obviously not to writing poems: Whispering is for those / who have secrets / Something I gave away / in years of therapy / To people who cannot / remember my name Praying all the while / to find the sanity / I’d misplaced / When abuse was / someone else’s game / and it snared me No longer silent / living in shadows / I speak with more volume / so I can hear myself / so others know I’m here / that I survive. New members and their fresh perspectives are always welcome.

Aluminum Can Collection Update

In September, 540 pounds of aluminum cans were delivered to the recycler, netting $216.00. Funds benefit the CAC, primarily the Loan Room. Thank you to all of those who help with the collection of cans and transporting them to the recycler. Your help is most appreciated, without which, we would not have an ongoing cash flow of dollars into the CAC. Be sure to save your aluminum cans, rinse them, and place them in the container outside the Activity Center kitchen.

The host usually provides the main course. The total cost of the meal is divided among the members. Recipes are shared so you may enjoy them again. If you would like to be on the list to be notified for the fall event or just have questions, call Alan.

Fall is finally here and it’s time to think about avoiding holiday stress by exercising. Both Monday and Thursday, professional instructors come to SCOV and teach a Joseph Pilates core (abdomen and back) strengthening mat class. Pilates workouts are not just sets of simple exercises. They affect our entire system of bones and joints. Your abdominal muscles, back, hips, arms and more are strengthened and toned. This allows for better posture, flexibility, strength and balance. The classes include many warm-up stretches and are one hour total body workouts. Because these mat classes are designed for seniors, all exercise movements can be modified for different levels of performance. Our instructors are very helpful with this. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or stop by and watch one of our classes.

It’s like riding a bicycle, you don’t really forget, but just need some practice to get back to it. We have a group of friendly, excellent players in our club and we are happy to teach our sport to any interested beginners. We all started as novices and, like all sports, with good fundamentals and practice, become better. Racquetball is a fast sport that develops good equilibrium and agility. The lively ball makes it fun to play and challenging, as well.
