pliments” were some (fortunately few) reports I’d heard about restaurant or administrative staff being rudely abused by someone dissatisfied with some aspect of their service. When complaints are justified, and rationally and civilly presented, they deserve, and receive, attention; complaints presented in an abusive or demeaning manner are more likely to elicit anger rather than corrective action. And when compliments are merited, why not offer them and brighten the day of an SCOV employee who has served you well? “Complaint” and “compliment”: They each have their place in improving the operation of our community and rewarding those whose efforts make that operation possible.

The Power of Words by John Wilson “Compl-aint” and “Compl-iment,” two words that start out the same but with distinct endings that evoke quite different effects. “Complaint” is a rather unpleasant word, meaning, as it frequently does, that someone expresses dissatisfaction with the actions of another. I reckon most of us would be happier if we never had to voice a complaint or be on the receiving end of one. Yet, we need complaints. Without them we might never be aware of situations or attitudes disturbing to others and meriting our attention. But most of us would prefer that the complaints be few and far between. Quite the opposite is true for “compliment.” Generally we could imagine that compliments are rendered with a smile and received with appreciation. I think it likely that most of us take pleasure in offering compliments to others for a job well done, and who doesn’t like to be the recipient of one? Complaints and compliments are part of life. Each have their proper place in the order of things. Perhaps we all know someone who seems to do nothing but complain – generally not a pleasure to be in their company. But insincerity in offering compliments is hardly a virtue, with the false kind words frequently followed by muttered negatives. Justified complaints are necessary to alert us to things that require attention, and sincere compliments brighten the lives of those who have offered us some service or kindness. Your Vote, Your Voice The results of the vote for amending governing documents is a strong indicator that the Board of Directors is listening to your voice and concerns. The Board recently sent out for a vote on two amendment issues. One was whether or not to allow the Board to contract with a single trash removal vendor. The other was if residential yard sales should be allowed in the community. The vote was close on both issues. This shows that the Board listened and saw there were enough residents concerned about the issues to get a more in-depth study through a vote. Thanks to all of you who took the time and made the effort to show where you stand on the issues by casting your ballot. This vote showed nearly 1,850 participated. This is the highest amount of participation since 2013. It shows the electronic form of voting is working well and that no matter the time of year or where you are in the world you can still be an active participant in the happenings of our community. Whether your issue passed or failed, you can be certain that your voice is heard through your actions of voting.

General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Restaurant Remodel As we’re ticking the last few items off the punch list for the restaurant remodel project, I wanted to share about the progression. The remodel was a behind-the-scenes project, affecting the kitchen area, with an upfront impact on the restaurant operation. Focus groups and surveys were conducted to determine residents’ wants and needs. In June 2017 the Board approved $180,000 for Phase I, but scope changes were made and all that was completed at that time was the interceptor in preparation for the interior grease lines and for the architectural plans. On April 25, 2018, the Board approved additional funds for proposed changes to the originally-approved project after the presentation of the Restaurant Business Plan with a total not-to-exceed budget of $305,000. At the time this article was written, the balance of the work done on the project was $295,709, about $9,000 under budget. The project began at the end of May and was completed at the beginning of July. Our contractor was O’Neil, our architect was David Garcia and our restaurant equipment manufacturer was Paul Hoffman of AIS Industries. One of the factors driving this project was the requirement by Pima County to install a larger grease interceptor and to connect the associated lines to it. Additionally, as the architect reviewed the space, and while adequate for a kitchen, the design inhibited functionality. To correct this, the beverage station was revamped, a door moved, a door added, and proper shelving installed. The refrigerator and the dishwashing stations were switched. This makes it closer for the bussers to drop off the dishes, and it’s closer for the cooks to access the refrigerators. Also, the cooling units, replaced through our asset reserve project, are fully functioning (one unit was original to the building). A door was cut at the end of the cook line creating access to the cooling units and prep areas. Prior to the renovation, there was only one exit for the cooks. Now there are two. This has greatly improved the flow of work for the cooks. Ceiling tiles were replaced with bright white and lighting expanded or wattage increased. August was the first full month to be open. There were 93 comment cards submitted during this period with the lowest average being 4.45 in a range of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest. were also many positive comments about the menu, food and service. Thus ends the kitchen remodel 2018 and begins the opportunity to serve our residents. Staff will be following the Business Plan benchmarks to provide good service and good food at a good price.

Research and details are being worked out at this time. The new year brings our first TAD Management show of the year on January 5. It will be a salute to Barry Manilow and Bette Midler. Watch for information in the November and December Tipsters. TAD shows will be presented in January, February and March. Community pools are on winter hours as of October 1. Residents have complained to each other and to the HOA about the numerous weeds that have developed in our community. Courtesy Notices about the “invaders” have been sent to homeowners. After receiving a large volume of telephone calls and emails about how the weeds at vacant or sometimes occupied properties have spread into pristine yards, we are again asking your cooperation in being pro-active regarding weeds. Whether you are a full-time resident or a part-time resident, please make arrangements with a landscaper to service your property monthly if you are not cleaning up your own landscape. This is especially important during the monsoon season and shortly after. If you have no objection to using a pre-emergent, please talk to your landscaper or pest control vendor about when and how many times a year pre-emergent is spread. Homes that have few weeds during the year usually have pre-emergent applied. As Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Did you know that our library has around 13,000 items? This includes over 5,000 paperbacks, magazines and puzzles that circulate on the honor system, but at the heart of our collections are the 8,500 barcoded books, audio books, large print books and videos. Almost 40 percent of our fiction books and videos are in circulation at any given time, so if all items were returned on the same day there would not be enough room on the shelves. It’s a constant juggling act. This time of the year we have the largest percentage of items with a “New” sticker because the summer weeding leads to a lot of summer shopping. Regular print fiction and nonfiction books have a place on the “New” shelf for the first three months, and all other collections (large print, audio and video) get a six-month run sporting a “New” sticker on their spines. Several new foreign films have recently been purchased for fans of that genre. Come in and see what’s new or visit our online catalog and click “BROWSE NEW ITEMS.”

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Why Do I Need Resistance Training? The human body has over 600 skeletal muscles. Muscle strength is a key factor in maintaining independence as one ages. However, muscle mass naturally declines, beginning around the age of 30. Without the intervention of resistance training, this natural aging process results in a loss of approximately 10 percent per decade, with an accelerated loss after the age of 59. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass, strength and function related to aging, affects balance, gait, and the ability to perform daily tasks. Bone mass decreases while porosity of the bones increases; osteoporosis risk increases with age. Eighty-five percent of individuals over the age of 70 experience degenerative joint disease; pain is often associated with the degeneration which can impact performance of activities. The joints stiffen and the bone struc-

ture becomes less solid, often resulting in a loss of height and stooped posture. Breathing can be impaired by these postural and muscular changes. I look forward to seeing you in the gym. Members of the Activity Center Renovation Committee (ACRC) have visited several active adult HOAs and analyzed their auditoriums, meeting rooms, restrooms and lobby areas to see how they compared to our Activity Center. Most of the HOAs have much higher HOA fees than SCOV and that was sometimes reflected in their facilities and in general reinforced the need for renovating ours. The ACRC will soon be creating a prioritized list of general goals and then review them with the appropriate professionals to find the best path to success. This will be a high-level review to determine what realistic physical changes can be made within the current parking and zoning constraints. This will eventually lead to a preliminary conceptual design. Please check with the SCOV calendar for our updated general meeting schedule. Changes to your yard’s landscaping require approval. Minor changes may be approved by the Community Services Coordinator, assuming your proposed changes are in compliance with the SCOV governing documents. Minor landscaping changes include a few new plants; new flatwork such as brick, pavers and tile; walkway and patio coating/staining; and new crushed or river rock. Major changes require Architectural Review Committee (ARC) approval and include changes to the yard grading or drainage; major plant material additions; new water or fire features and new rainwater collectors. Please remember that any vegetation planted in your yard must be from the approved plant list found in Appendix B of the SCOV Development Standards. The annual paper phone book is in production and expected to ship sometime before the end of October. Once the books arrive, we rely on an army of volunteers to deliver the phone books to every house in our community. Each volunteer is assigned part of a neighborhood, averaging about 35 houses. There were 1,848 votes cast (1,192 for, 656 against) with 1,232 votes needed to pass. The single vendor waste and recycling action failed. Proposed Action #2 was to prohibit garage and yard sales on residential lots. There were 1,843 votes cast (1,258 for, 585 against) with 1,229 votes needed to pass. Sandwiches and lighter menu options are available in the evening. There are happy hour, bar food and beverage menus and an all-day Sunday menu. Fall has arrived, though the temperatures may not reflect it as much as it does for our northern neighbors. I spent the summer on trips to my past, including one to the town where I first remember the library, my favorite place to go. Those steps and that railing were so high (I was 3-years-old) and they have grown smaller over the years. Today, my favorite place remains the library, our very own SCOV Library. The year of events has already begun with two author talks in September, and we have one of our own residents, Jim Williams, presenting in October (Friday, October 12, 1 PM, Auditorium). His book Claiming the Desert is about early Oro Valley settlers. Don’t forget to pick up your free tickets during the week before the event at the Library. The Friends of the Library board will be meeting to plan more fun events. Watch for details.

Her art reflects the colorful, carefree southwest and its icons. Karen states, “I paint what I want the way I want to paint it. My media is watercolor, but because I layer my paint, the end result often looks like an acrylic painting.”

Why are The Views’ greens in a vulnerable state? I have shown some of this information in the past but feel it is important to share again. The primary factors are the compacted subsoil under the greens and the build-up of salts since Oro Valley mandated the use of reclaimed water for our golf course. Both factors impact our ability to grow healthy grass root systems and fight grass diseases. While our golf course superintendent, Mike Kropf, has done an excellent job keeping the greens viable and playable, he is concerned that time may be running out. The Views Golf Course was built in the 1980s without a subsoil drainage system, which is a 12-20 inch engineered subsoil layer of soil, sand, and gravel that allows water and constituents to drain and roots to grow to healthy levels. Sixteen other golf courses in the Tucson/Oro Valley area were investigated, and all have adequate subsoil drainage systems. The Views does not. Del Webb built similar golf course greens at Sun City in Phoenix. Three of those courses have already reconstructed their greens and installed engineered subsoils, while a fourth course is being reconstructed this summer. Recent core samples taken of The Views greens in February, 2018 (as seen below) highlight the issues:

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 October is the starting of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of green on the fairways, tees and greens. This is a good time to remind golfers about changes from summer to winter play. The divot mix will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is to only be used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. This year, the green fairway on #5 and the whole #10 fairway will not be overseeded, so please don’t repair divots with seed mix on those holes. The seed will germinate during the winter, and, when the Bermuda grass eventually turns brown, those divots will leave green spots all over the non-overseeded fairways. This also applies to all of the roughs, since they aren’t overseeded. It is a small step to help reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots. Another reminder: The course will be very wet following overseeding. Even though the irrigation is slowly turned off prior to the course opening, the ground will remain very saturated. Golf carts will be relegated to the cart paths for about three weeks to allow the fairways extra time to firm. When the carts are allowed off the paths, please try to avoid driving through low areas that are still wet. Most areas will be painted with white lines, but some areas might still be soft and can be damaged by golf cart traffic.

He continues to find ways to improve the kitchen operations. Errick has done a great job with the front of the house by training staff on expectations and keeping their morale up. Charlene and Cindy have stepped into the lead server roles with vigor and have done a great job directing and training staff. Stephanie and Azura continue to support Chef Paul to make sure our new kitchen stays looking brand new. For all they do, I thank all of them. In addition, I thank all the residents for their continued support and wonderful comments on the food and service. Your donation will be doubled as the Sun City Foundation is matching donations up to a total of $7,000. A donation is also a win-win situation as donors can claim up to $800/cpl and $400 pp as a contribution to the working poor, according to the State of Arizona tax code. As the result of failing sight, Phyllis is giving up her passion for pastel painting, leaving SCOV and moving on to her next step in retirement. She has been a stalwart of our club, creating beautiful artwork since our club’s inception 30 years ago. She is an accomplished artist in her medium, having studied in France for a period of time, then applying her skills back here in our Phyllis doing what she loved best. studio. Phyllis coordinated the monthly Art Talks given here in the Native American rooms by the Tucson Museum of Art staff. She arrived early each Wednesday morning to make one or two pots of coffee for our appreciative group. She participated eagerly in our studio’s weekly 11 AM artwork critiques where she always made good suggestions. She is a member of the Pastel Society of America and frequently discussed articles and happenings in that field with our group. Most of all, Phyllis is a pleasant, thoughtful, engaging lady and the embodiment of a SCOV fine artist. She is just the best of folk. Phyllis, you will be sorely missed and we wish you the very best.

Most of our club’s winter residents come back to roost for the winter season this month and it’s an exciting time for us sculptors. Those who worked on pieces throughout the summer show them off and inspire the rest of us to greater heights. We all settle in and do what we enjoy: creating mighty fine clay sculptures. Kicking off our Astronomy Club’s speaker series on Thursday, October 18, is Eric Christensen, the Director of Catalina Sky Survey at the U of A. NASA has tasked this group to find and track the largest and most hazardous asteroids, called Near Earth Objects (NEOs). Christensen will tell us how NEOs are detected and how they are tracked to reduce the risk of being undetected and how asteroid impacts can be averted. Impacts by asteroids have shaped the evolution of life on earth, and are an ongoing process in yhe solar system today. The Astronomy Club of SCOV is one of the largest clubs in

At our October meeting, we will discuss Evicted by Matthew Desmond, the 2017 Pulitzer Prize non-fiction award winner. Aquatone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, board, noodle, ball and fitness band. Most are available at the pool. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

The Fitness Swim Club provides a vehicle for swimmers to participate in a group swim workout. We generally go 2,400 to 3,000 yards, mostly freestyle per workout. Some do more, a few do less. Workouts are suitable for master swimmers, triathletes and those that would just like to participate in swim workouts. Fall is finally here and it’s time to think about avoiding holiday stress by exercising. On Monday and Thursday, professional instructors come to SCOV and teach a Joseph Pilates core-strengthening mat class. Pilates workouts are not just sets of simple exercises. They affect our entire system of bones and joints. Your abdominal muscles, back, hips, arms and more are strengthened and toned. This allows for better posture, flexibility, strength and balance. The classes include many warm-up stretches and are one hour total body workouts. Because the mat classes are designed for seniors, all exercise movements can be modified by our instructors for different levels of performance. Pickleball covers two of these three basics. Physical activity lowers depression and improves well-being. Exercise is good medicine and the gateway to healthy living. Aluminum Can Collection Update On Thursday, August 23, our crew of four made the first trip of the new fiscal year to the scrap yard with a load of aluminum cans. We delivered 440 pounds of cans, and received a check in the amount of $189.20. Impressions around the scrap yard gave the impression that a drop in the metals market is anticipated, as they were in the process of selling all scrap metal as fast as possible. The recent rain was so heavy that our crew was unable to empty our bags of aluminum cans in the normal designated place, as there was about four inches of water on the ground area. Therefore, our crew had to empty our load into a couple of large dumpsters, with the edge of the dumpster being at least five feet six inches high. This was not an easy task, but we survived. Thanks to our driver, Jeff Lawyer, and unloading helpers, Dave Flatness (the dumpster diver), Jon Russell, and Dave Johnson for making this a successful trip. Thanks to all volunteering on this program.

To date, we’ve provided over 2,200 bikes to various other 501(c)(3) charities who then distribute the bikes to their clients. Some of our partner organizations are Youth on Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus and Tucson Boys and Girls Club. Wheels for Kids is a total volunteer effort. We need mechanics.
