From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors tkelleyscov@gmail.com

Communication – A Two Way Responsibility by Tim Kelley When I was elected to the Board in 2017, communication, specifically the lack of communication and transparency, were frequent topics of conversation. I heard the Board needs to do more, “We want to know what is happening, the Board should be more transparent as they deal with the business of SCOV.” Have communications improved? There is a saying, “If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there, does it make a sound?” Communication is a two-way responsibility. The Board and committees openly discuss issues at our meetings and presentations. However, are the residents there to listen and provide their comments and concerns such that all viewpoints can be taken into consideration? In addition to the monthly GM/Board coffees, residents can attend Board and committee meetings. Opportunities for public comment and questions occur at these meetings. Most Board, and some committee presentations are recorded and posted to the SCOV website. Here are some of the more recent, as well as upcoming communication opportunities for SCOV residents: Eight “Financial Conversations with Residents” took place in January 2019. Following up on what we learned at those meetings, we have scheduled “Quarterly Financial Conversations with Residents.” The next will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 1:30 PM, Navajo Room, where we will discuss the results for the first fiscal quarter and respond to the questions and concerns. The Annual Meeting was held on April 22 and was attended by more than 250 residents at which the budget for 2019-2020 was presented. On Thursday, October 24, a special Board meeting will begin at 1 PM in the Auditorium. The Long-Range Planning Committee (LRPC) will give a presentation about the land use study and LRPC recommendations. How do we best utilize our limited space? On Tuesday, November 19, 10:30 AM, the third “Report to the Community, The Views Golf Club” will be presented in the Auditorium. In addition to reporting on last fiscal year’s per-

formance metrics, we will bring you up to date on the Greens Renovation Project and look forward to what Rick has planned for our winter season. The frequency of information appearing in “This Week In SCOV” has increased as we address rumors and misinformation when we hear about it. If you have a question, ask it. I hope to see many of you at these upcoming communication opportunities.

Support is Critical Sun City Oro Valley enjoys diverse support by residents. We are a big ship with many moving parts. We rely upon the kindness and generosity of our residents for support of many of our activities. There are many forms of support. I’d like to address just a few: Volunteers – provide many hours of work and leadership to clubs, committees, the Board of Directors, activities and events. • We all benefit when these residents freely give of themselves, their time and talents. • I can’t say enough about the fabulous army of volunteers that support this community in a myriad of different ways. Financial – all property owners in SCOV support the association with payment of their annual assessments (dues). • Additional financial support is often made by residents to various charities in the area. • Residents, in the course of being a volunteer, may support their various clubs or committees with food, beverages or other ways they may spend their own funds on. • Some residents support various parts of the operations by contributing or sustaining such things as The Views Restaurant, The Views Golf Course, concerts, events and activities. Many thanks to those golfers who bought annual passes for this next year showing their support even though the course will be shortened during the work that will go on with the greens renovation. We are also thankful for those who show their support to The Views Restaurant: thanks to you we are making great strides in providing the consistent food and service you deserve. Many of you have attended one of our great concerts or events and we thank you as well. Moral Support – We are fortunate to have individuals and groups that constantly support others through their kind and thoughtful words, emails, personal notes and public notifications. If you are one of these, please accept my personal thanks as my staff and I are often recipients of your kindness. Above all else, you make it a pleasure to work here. Long story short, support is critical and the support we have in this wonderful community is nothing short of excellence. It may not quite be perfect, but you can see it from here. Thank you all for all you do. You make Sun City Oro Valley amazing!

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Garden Club Shares Expertise

S

COV is fortunate to have an active Garden Club. The club has been providing gardening tips in recent “This Week in SCOV” newsletters, so we thought we would share some of their suggestions here. Garden design and interiorscaping: It’s as easy as 1-2-3. The Rule of Three is a design concept that’s so easy to use you almost can’t go wrong. Simply line up three of the same plants, in the same pot, to create a visually pleasing series. It’s the “sum is greater than its parts” theory in action. So why does this rule work? It’s a numbers game. In garden design, using groups of odd-numbered plantings creates harmony and continuity. The rule of three, or thirds, isn’t new. It first entered the vernacular in 1797 by John Smith in a book about the balance of light and dark. The rule of Photo credit: Deposit Photos three is used in literature as well. The Three Little Pigs, The Three Musketeers, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and what about “Three Blind Mice”? The symmetrical shape of succulents offer lots of opportunities for this rule of three: Three echeveria, three agave, or three aloe make a terrific textural trio. Or choose a group of three small cactus, such as barrel or teddy bear cactus, and set them in a queue on a table or bookshelf. While the rule of three won’t solve all of your problems, it offers you an easy, balanced, stylish little tweak that your indoor or outdoor spaces just may need. Tips for weed control: Plants, gardens and flowers are the greatest additions to every home, but rains bring out the weeds. Here are some ways to get rid of your weeds: • Boiling water can be as effective as a store-bought weed killer. Just make sure the boiling water is HOT and use care not to scald yourself.

4

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

• Salt. Even just a pinch of salt can kill a plant, so make sure your aim is precise. • Vinegar contains acetic acid which kills only the leaves, but if your weed is young and the roots aren’t established, it works well. • Pull the weeds up with your hands after a rain when the ground is moist and soft. Tips regarding mosquito problems: First make sure you don’t have any standing water for them to lay their eggs. Check the saucers under your potted plants and turn your empty pots upside down. There are several plants you can grow around your patio that will help stave off mosquitos. Lemon balm, lavender and mint are all great mosquito repellents, but basil has extra mosquito fighting power. Get rid of your “bug zapper;” it is calling bugs into your yard. Next time you light up the grill or the firepit throw a handful of herbs on the fire. Sage and thyme are the best to repel bugs and they smell good too. The Garden Club meets the second Tuesday of the month, October through April. In addition to interesting guest speakers on local gardening topics, occasional tours are taken to off-site locations of interest. If you are new to SCOV and don’t know what is growing in your yard, just contact the club. They have a committee that will come to identify plants in your yard and tell you how to care for them. In spring 2020, the Garden Club will host its biennial Garden Walk which will showcase several yards in SCOV. The club uses some of the walk proceeds to donate items such as planters for The Views Restaurant. To learn more about the Garden Club, see the article on page 20.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 What You, as a Homeowner, Can Do About Landscape Maintenance in the Common Areas One of the beautiful aspects to our community is the natural landscaping. As a resident of Sun City Oro Valley, you enjoy the 1,000 acres of Common Area land owned and cared for by the Association. The manager of our Common Area Maintenance (CAM) crew is Mary Kaye Cunningham. Mary has worked for the Association since the beginning of Del Webb days. CAM has many responsibilities with all this land to manage, with some exceptions, one of which is the common area that abuts homeowner lots. There is a maintenance schedule where a 5’ buffer is maintained behind homeowner lots on our common area. This schedule takes approximately one and a half years for her staff to cover the estimated 10 miles of area. If you want landscaping work done before the crew comes behind your lot, you can participate in the Pre-Qualified Landscaper program. This is a program of landscapers who have gone through a qualifying process that informs them of what work is allowed in our common areas. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to interface with the Association and apply for the work to be done and to make sure the permit is properly displayed. If your favorite landscaper is not on the list, there is an application process for them to become qualified. The scope of work that can be done, including trimming and removal of trees, may be found on our website under the Members > Member Services > For Your Home section of our website. The applications need to be submitted to our Community Services Coordinator who is available during the work week from 9-11 AM in the Administration Office. Another type of common area maintenance the Association manages is for lots that qualify as a Golf Course View Lot. The lots that meet the qualification are listed in the Development Standards, Article 5, Appendix E, and the scope of work provided is outlined in policy CAM-002. The services the Association provides behind these lots are opening the golf course view up to 50% including desert clean up and trimming. Please be aware of what this program provides and the guidelines you are required to follow. We all enjoy and appreciate the beautiful landscaping of our natural desert surroundings and our relationship between our homeowners and the Association.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Hello Fall Temperatures are starting to drop to greet our seasonal residents. Enjoy our last indoor movie of the year on October 22; due to increased activities surrounding the holidays, indoor movies will take a break in November and December. I look forward to bringing you some new shows from TAD Management production company in the near future. Those shows will have tickets available for online purchase. Also, TAD Management shows will always have theater-style seating due to the high demand for seats. You won’t want to miss their Cher and Bill Medley Tribute show. Once again, the SCOV Variety Theatre Club will be bringing you an “Octoberfest” on Sunday, October 20. This will be a great way to meet new residents and old friends.

I hope you will take advantage of the free Author Series program already in swing. This year’s authors include award-winning and bestselling authors in several genres including mystery, historical fiction, apocalyptic fiction, environmental fiction, history, biography, and outdoor true crime. Watch Coming Events for each month’s author. A full list is available in the library as well as on the library webpage. We appreciate your donations of books, videos, magazines and puzzles. Many go into our collection and others are sold to raise money for new items. Please keep in mind that we do not take monthly magazines more than three months old, weekly magazines more than four weeks old, or puzzles with missing pieces. Books on computers, business, and health should be recent, generally no more than five years old. Unfortunately, we cannot accept books that have been highlighted or written in. All books should be in good condition with no torn pages, missing covers, or musty odors. A full list of guidelines is available at this link: bit.ly/LibraryBookDonations. Thank you for following the guidelines when donating materials.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Use the Surge Strategy A highly effective way to churn through calories without having to work out longer is to include in your cardio exercise spurts of speed followed by short breathers. After a warm-up, push yourself a bit harder than usual for a short surge, then slow down to a more moderate pace to recover. Repeating this pattern several times in a session will give you a higher calorie tally than you’d earn if you kept your pace steady. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, October 8, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, October 9, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

As we age, our bodies take a little longer to repair themselves, but moderate physical activity is good for people of all ages and ability levels. Regular exercise provides countless health benefits, including improvements in blood pressure and blood sugar management, reduced amounts of lipids in the blood, better bone and joint health, and long-term preservation of cognitive function. So why not stop in and try a class or two, along with the high end selection of fitness equipment? Remember, this is your Fitness Center.

The ARC is tasked by the Board of Directors to monitor, review and control the development of all property within Sun City Oro Valley; including residential, commercial and SCOV institutional properties. The owner and/or a designated representative of a commercial or institutional site are required to submit both preliminary and final plans to the ARC for review and approval. Commercial properties include the plaza at Rancho Vistoso/Sun City Boulevards, Copper Health and the fire station. You may have noticed a new sign at Vistoso Community Church. The project was reviewed and approved by the ARC. SCOV institutional properties include, for example, the Welcome Center, Pro Shop, The Views Restaurant, Activity Center, Artisan Center, our clubhouses, maintenance buildings and the AFC. The breadth of the ARC responsibility ensures our residents and visitors have an orderly and cohesive community to enjoy.

The annual paper phone book is in production and expected to ship sometime before the end of October. Once the books arrive, we rely on an army of volunteers to deliver the phone books to every house in our community. Each volunteer is assigned part of a neighborhood, averaging about 35 houses. Volunteers will pick up their routes 2-4 PM, Friday, October 25, in the Auditorium, and deliver sometime over that weekend. If you’d like to join us, email me. Did you miss the deadline for the paper phone book? No worries, you can still update your listing in our online directory. The online version is updated monthly, thus always has the most up-to-date information. To update your listing in the directory, complete the online form “To change your directory listing...” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Food and Beverage Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-May, First Fri., 2-3 PM, The Views Terrace The Views Restaurant (TVR) has been busy this summer. While winter residents were away, several new events and expansion of others have increased revenues. Sunday Karaoke attracted new singers and cheerleaders, overflowing into the Dining Room. Friends of the Restaurant (FOR) donations topped $1K to purchase a new basic sound system. Additional speakers may be needed to provide a better listening experience. New events: Mixology Classes with Aalt’s bar specialty drink recipes; Wine Out, Dine Out the fourth Monday with Joe Bourne’s entertainment, meal specials and $10 bottles of house wine; expanded days for Try and Buy, featuring four wines available through TVR distributors. Check the calendar insert in the Tipster for dates and times. Tips: If you want a quieter meal, ask for seating Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Patio or Terrace. For faster check pay, leave your credit card/cash in view so your server can easily identify you are ready to go.

Featured artists for this month are Julie Holtry and Karen Muench. Julie makes jewelry and Oriental themed note cards. Her trademark is her pendant dragonfly which adorns the necks of many Julie Holtry left, Karen Muench right local residents. “I think I have a dragonfly for every outfit I have. They are such fun to wear!” Julie particularly likes to use dichroic glass which has a gem-like shimmering quality. Karen is a self-taught whimsical folk artist. “Sometimes I also paint subject matter that addresses social issues.” Karen layers watercolors which makes them resemble acrylics and adds pen and ink to give them a finishing touch. “I am fortunate now that I am retired to be able to focus on the creative process to enrich my life.” Spaces remain available for the Arts and Crafts Festival to be held on Saturday, November 16. Long Range Planning Chair Martha Cray Marthacray77@gmail.com Second and fourth Wed., 10 AM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

This month gives us the opportunity to consider what SCOV could move toward as a result of our ideas, creativity and planning. A partnership with The Planning Company, a Tucson-based land use design company, was contracted to undertake a land use study. Daniel Bradshaw, Landscape Architect, will present the Land Use Report. This report will present a look at what SCOV could look like over the coming years. Come hear of and see the vision at a special Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, October 24, 1 PM, Auditorium. The presentation will be taped and following the meeting, will be available on our website for those unable to attend.

Marketing Chair Pete Coy 360-739-4100 petecoy@gmail.com First Wed., 2 PM, WC1 Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Just Maybe Maybe you didn’t know, or just forgot, how much foliage grows in our desert. Even though our monsoon season this year was a dud compared to past years, weeds and foliage grew. Pre-emergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds, and you won’t have as many weeds next year; check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Don’t forget to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, sidewalk, and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need to be trimmed back so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at corners need to be trimmed so street and stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should be cut off, down to the ground. With cooler weather here, take a look at your mailbox, flag and post to see if they need painting. If you can’t do the job yourself, check the Consumer Referral Vendor List on our SCOV website for the name and number of someone who will do it for a nominal fee. Please take pride in your property, and SCOV will continue to be a beautiful place in which to live!

A year after moving to SCOV in 2002, Larry Hoagland was recruited by many people he’d met, to join the Posse. He and his wife Coralyn joined. A couple of years later he found out that one of the squads needed a co-leader. He called Co-leader Larry Lee (Squad C), to volunteer for the position. He found out the position had just been filled, however, Squad B was also looking for a co-leader. Florence Duckett welcomed him as her Co-leader and he’s now been on the Posse board for over 10 years. Like many Posse volunteers, Larry Hoaglund has volunteered in other ways to help our community. He’s a past president of the Sun City Vistoso Foundation board. Larry admits that he likes doing good things for our community, and being on the Posse helps us all maintain a safe place to live. The Posse needs volunteers and Larry encourages all to consider joining. Six hours a year (two 3-hour patrols), is all the commitment we ask. Join

Preserve and Enhance Lifestyle and Property Values Chair Don Stewart 618-980-3878 bethsdad81@gmail.com

What’s in a name? The header bar above is the name in our charter issued by the SCOV BOD. We adopted the acronym PREVAIL (Preserve Real Estate Values and Inhance Lifestyle). We are often referred to simply as The Views committee. This summer only three or four permanent improvement requests to the ARC resulted in 100 foot notification letters for possible view impediment being sent to neighbors. Good news: None of these situations resulted in any views being impeded. Bad news: The members of PREVAIL who were here this summer had no opportunities to apply its model for view preservation. At the resumption of meetings on September 18 we determined a course of action to test our model for fairness, accuracy and consistency before moving on to views impeded by vegetation. Minutes of that meeting are on the SCOV website and all meetings are open to all residents with date, time and location published on all calendar sites. Welcome back to seasonal residents.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1

The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course in addition to threatening homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of inspections to determine the condition of the creek and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee together with HOA staff and experienced experts in these matters participate in the inspections. The end of the summer monsoon season is an optimal time to conduct an inspection. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 17.

Century plant stalk with Catalina Mountains’ Half Dome by Sheryl Hester

In late August and through mid-September, a Gould’s turkey has been seen in SCOV. Left to right: on a neighborhood stroll by Diana Holmes; on a backyard quail seed block by Ray Balaco; taking a drink by Ray Miller; observed at Catalina Vista by Common Area Maintenance staff member, Cindy Hinkle and walking behind Sheryl Hester’s home. Arizona Game and Fish and the U.S. Forest Service conducted a successful reintroduction program to restore the turkeys to their original mountain habitat. This female may have wandered over from the nearby Catalina Mountains.

Golf Advisory Chair Beth Allen 520-639-8845 Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

Overseeding is in process, and the golf course re-opens on Monday, October 14. The driving range is currently available to hit balls off the mats only. As a reminder, once we are open to play, golf carts need to remain on the cart path only until Tuesday, October 29. It has been an incredible first quarter of this fiscal year, and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon. Please take advantage of booking your starting times in advance. As a member passholder, you can book nine days in advance, and all residents can book seven days in advance. As our winter residents and guests start coming back to town looking to play golf and join or rejoin the club, we want to remind you of our Referral Program for first-time annual golf pass sales. It’s quite simple. An individual who makes a referral resulting in the purchase of a first-time annual pass (resident or nonresident) will receive a 10% Pro Shop credit for the amount paid for the pass. To receive this credit the referral form located in the Pro Shop must be completed and submitted to the Pro Shop before or with the purchase of a new annual pass. We look forward to another outstanding season and would like to welcome back all our seasonal residents. Please let our professional, friendly staff know if there is anything we can do to help provide a more positive and memorable golf experience for you.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 October is the start of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of “green” on the fairways, tees and greens. This is a good time to remind golfers about changes from summer to winter play. The divot mix will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is only to be used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. This year #2 fairway will not be overseeded so please don’t repair divots with seed mix on this hole. The seed will germinate during the winter and when the Bermuda grass eventually goes dormant, those divots will leave green spots all over the non-overseeded tan areas. This also applies to all of the roughs and blue tee boxes since they aren’t overseeded either. It is a small step to help reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots. Another reminder is that the course will be very wet following overseeding. Even though the irrigation is slowly turned off prior to the course reopening, the soil will remain very saturated. Golf carts will be regulated to the cart paths for about two weeks to allow the fairways extra time to firm up. When the carts are allowed off the paths, please try to avoid driving through low areas that are still wet. Most areas will be painted with white lines, but some areas might still be soft and can easily be damaged by golf cart traffic.

This month we begin to welcome back many of our seasonal golf residents. As the course is recovering from overseeding, golfers will be restricted to the golf path only until the end of October. Good news: our leagues continue to experience nice growth in memberships. The new anniversary pass that was recently offered has brought many new players to our course and has especially increased resident participation for afternoon play for the casual golfer. With additional play on our course it is more important than ever for all golfers to remember to rake traps, repair divots and ball marks. Our help in keeping the golf course in good shape is appreciated by Mike Kropf and his crew. They work extremely hard to keep our course in an outstanding condition and we need to support their efforts. Rick Price, Director of Golf, is always planning many fun events for all of us to enjoy. You can keep in touch on these events by checking what’s new at the Pro Shop or by going online at our SCOV website on the golf tab. Club members should contact their league representatives for any questions or concerns. You are always welcome to attend our monthly meetings the first Wednesday of each month at 2 pm, WC3. Remember it is important to check in at the Pro Shop at least thirty minutes before your tee time.

inside and outside the community, and our summer menu has been a huge success. The popular Mixology Classes sold out every time. The wine Try and Buys are selling out every time. Our beer dinner with Uncle Bear’s Brewery was a great success and everyone attending had a great time. As we gear toward season and business increases, my efforts must switch as well. That is why I am sad to say that this month will be the last Mixology Class we will be doing til next summer. I have greatly enjoyed running these classes and look forward to next summer and doing it again. This month I would like to feature one of our lead servers in the restaurant. Marti Richards is not only one of our great leaders but also a resident. She came from Denver, Colorado about three years ago. She enjoys playing golf, drinking vodka, and playing with her wiener dog, Oscar Meyer. Her husband, Rocky, also works as a ranger for our Pro Shop. She also makes the best cookies ever (feel free to prove me wrong).

Is it inside-out, upside-down or from outer space? Come figure this out at our theme show, “A Different Perspective,” in the Activity Center. The Summer Art Sale was a great success. Many of the pieces displayed have new homes and happy owners. A touching story about Marie Gagnon (long-time resident and artist) was featured in the Arizona Daily Star on July 8. Briefly, twenty years ago she did a portrait featuring a young girl and a horse from a picture in the Star. This year she decided to find the now young lady and give it to her. Through the Star and social media Stephanie Reyes was located. An emotional meeting was held in Marie’s home, new friends were made. Read the article at bit.ly/MarieGagnon. For any questions, or if you have art pieces that you wish to sell or display, please contact Carol Nagel.

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 sigridkf@gmail.com Tue., 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

After leaving the “plastics” business, Steve and his wife raised and successfully showed Cocker Spaniels, moved on to Whippets and are now rehabbing Greyhounds.

It’s been a little over a year since we formed the Knit and Crochet Club. While our numbers have dwindled somewhat over the year for a variety of reasons, several of us continue to enjoy getting together to share our love for our craft. We share the projects we’re working on with the group, share patterns with each other, ooh and aah over finished items and generally enjoy being with each other while knitting or crocheting. We’ve become great friends and help each other when figuring out a new stitch or pattern. Come join us for a fun and relaxing couple of hours on Tuesday afternoons. If you need help getting back into knitting or crocheting we can usually help you get on the right track.

Modelers Pres. Fred Faust 520-907-3469 fjfaust1030@gmail.com Second Fri., 8 AM, Catalina/Pusch Ridge www.scovaz.com/clubs/modelers

We all remember 1983 and The Return of the Jedi. Modelers Club member, Don Holbrook, has created this model of the Rebel Alliance against the Evil Empire. This picture of a model is a good example of what can be produced by an expert model builder. As an SCOV resident, come join Don and others at our monthly meetings. During any day, if the lights are on and someone is in the Modelers Room, stop in. At our meetings, you will see what we are about, and you may enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. From time to time, we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Open Studio Artists Pres. Carol Nagel 520-825-3097 Tue., 9 AM-4 PM and Thu., 9 AM-2 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

Welcome back summer travelers. The Art Studio has been very quiet over the summer months. If you are a new resident, come check us out. We welcome a variety of skill levels and always have room for more artists.

Vistoso Photo Pres. Gerda Timm 403-251-5981 gerdatimm@hotmail.com For meeting schedule please see the website www.vistosophotoclub.weebly.com

Welcome back seasonal residents. Our meetings are held at Catalina Vista at 6 PM on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. Nonmembers are invited to attend. Our Wednesday, October 9, meeting will have a presentation by Steve Dell. Steve will be presenting workflow thoughts for your digital post processing. Steve is an animated, fun speaker. He knows his subject very well and communicates it effectively. Trust me, you will not fall asleep. Here is an amusing note about Steve: On his first date with his wife to be, they attended the film, The Graduate. At the time, Steve was a chemical engineer in the “plastics“ business. If you don’t make the connection, shame on you.

“Windless Dawn at Bosque del Apache” by Ed Caine Sculpture Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-812-0198 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

The sculpture group meets on Mondays in the Art Studio in Catalina Vista. Outside the studio, you can see some of our sculptures in the display case. If you are interested in becoming a member, we would be happy to show you the process used in creating our art. To learn more about sculpturing and our group, stop by and see us on Mondays.

As you can see in the picture, our group is busy sculpting. Gene Eckerbrecht is working on a giraffe, Laurie Lichaa just started a new project and Salvatore Hernandes is busy putting clothes on a project he started for a class that Aleda Haug taught in the spring. Unfortunately, the picture does not show Janet Sumlaz and Coni Arseneau working on their projects on that day. It is fun to watch members start a project and see the progress they make each week.

We welcome back our summer travelers and everyone else anxious to resume the various sewing club projects and activities. We look forward to welcoming back our seasonal members. The few but mighty of us who are here in summer have been busy holding down the fort, or should I say, the Sewing Room, on Mondays and Thursdays. Girls’ capri sets have been finished and sent to local community charities along with infant sleep sacks and crib sheets. Mel continues to supervise the sewing of her ever popular tote bags for children which we send to a variety of organizations. When more members return, we will decide what sewing projects to continue to work on this fall and winter for children at risk. Please come and join us if you are interested in sewing simple clothing projects. You can easily be oriented to the sewing machines and sergers by signing up outside the sewing room door in the Artisan Center. Cheer Bears

If you are cleaning out closets, we can use large pieces of washable/dryable fabric (nothing smaller than 16” x 16”) for the pillow cases we make. We snip the fabric scraps and add fiber fill for those soft, warm beds for the Humane Society. Both cats and dogs waiting for adoption there, or in foster parents’ homes, appreciate the beds we make. So far this year, we have made 177 pet beds and also contributed towels, a dog coat, brushes, bath mats, bowls, toys and three dog beds from a store. Please bring the fabric to the Sewing Room on Tuesday afternoons. Why not join us for a laidback afternoon? Quilters

Wow, summer is finally over, we think. Cheer Bears wants to welcome back all of the members who left for the summer. We will be so happy to have new stories to tell and hear. We are hoping that you will be bringing some rain to Oro Valley. Our monsoon season was a little dry. We have kept busy this year in the Sewing Room keeping the cheer bears marching. We did manage to finish all of the prepared bears for Leslie Chase and Casa de la Luz Hospice. Starting on Wednesday, October 2, 1 PM, we will have our regular meeting in the Sewing Room to make marching cheer bears. We hope to see you there. If you can trace, cut, embroider, sew, stuff, or pack lots of love in a small package, then your help is welcomed and needed.

October is here and once again, the Seniors for Kids group is kicking it in gear. We continued during the summer months to sew quilts, toys and lots of other things, and I hear that the saws and tools in the wood shop have been buzzing to create cradles, surprise boxes, cars and other creative things. We are anxious to get all of our members back to SCOV so we can make the big push toward our Christmas distribution that comes in early December. Look closely at next month’s Tipster as we announce “Kuddles for Kids” sponsored by Seniors for Kids. We want to invite the entire SCOV community to practice the spirit of giving by donating a stuffed animal or creature to be donated to groups who serve children in crisis. More information will be given in the November Tipster.

The Tapestry Rug Hooking group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. We welcome new members and any interested people to come by and see our art. If you are interested in hooking, our club provides materials and instruction. Learn more about our group by visiting our website or come by to see us on Tuesday mornings. Wool is one of the materials used in hooking. Years ago, there were numerous colors of wool to purchase. However, currently, there is a limited number of colors available. Thus, members in our group have purchased white wool and dyed the materials the colors desired for the project. The above picture is an illustration of

Welcome back seasonal residents. As more members return, so too, will our monitors and regular hours. We have not been idle, however. Thanks to president Steve Adams’ hard work this summer, and with an intro by Barb Grey, we now have our own “Basic Silversmithing Handbook.” This will come in handy for orientation, training classes and a great reference for all members. Most of us started with little to no experience. Our mentor philosophy builds upon each of us willing and able to learn and help one another. Check out our display windows in the Artisan Courtyard to see the fabulous results. You, too, can produce quality silver jewelry and polished gemstones. We welcome all prospective new members, whether a rookie or an experienced crafter. Stop in and learn about our new and improved training options. Submitting a poem for publication can be an agonizing experience. Club member Christa Lubatkin has captured the emotional impact exceptionally well utilizing weather metaphors in “thunder and lightning”: the publishing game / is a taunting weathervane in June a downpour of acceptances / pooled at my door by July the parched earth cracked and fissured / confidence turned to dust spitting-nail rejections rumbled down gutters / pelting my chest with a deluge of thanks-but-no-thanks still — this is not the time to pack up / abandoned orphan poems huddled in the dark this is the time to sharpen metaphors / don the yellow slicker — lean into the squall A refusal to be knocked down and not get up is what it takes to weather these storms, buoyed by helpful feedback and positive support. Poets Corner provides a safe and nurturing space for poetic try-outs. Newcomers are always welcome.

We ride year-round to preplanned destinations in Tucson and surrounding areas, using both city streets and dedicated bike paths. Occasional away rides start from a distant location. Weekly mountain bike options take a few of us to the beautiful Tortolita rangelands, containing some of the highest-rated single track bike trails in the nation. Our group ride options are from 25-50 miles, and we always make time for a coffee stop midway. Those who ride with the Women on Wheels group have their own agenda providing routes of 12-30 miles. We sponsor social events, participate in Wheels for Kids charity and are involved with fundraising for the Interfaith Community Food Bank, raising over $43,000 last year. If you are a resident and love to ride a bike, check out our website above.
