Which is Harder and Would You? by Janice Strassburg Asphalt, concrete or a car bumper? If you ask walkers in Sun City Vistoso why they walk in the street, they will quite often say that the asphalt is softer. Another reason for walking in the street is that there are uneven concrete slabs on the sidewalks. It still goes back to what is harder. If you are hit by a car I don’t think there is any doubt what is harder. Arizona Pedestrian Law 28-796 states: “A. If sidewalks are provided, a pedestrian shall not walk along and on an adjacent roadway.” “B. If sidewalks are not provided, a pedestrian walking along and on a highway shall walk when practicable only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic that may approach from the opposite direction.” We have sidewalks in every portion of our community. ing unlawful but you are placing yourself in harm’s way. This seems especially true for those persons who choose to walk along Rancho Vistoso Blvd. with the amount of traffic that thoroughfare carries. The bike lanes are there for the convenience of bikers and golf carts. When you walk in those lanes you force those persons to move into traffic lanes. Pedestrian crossings allow walkers the right of way to cross a street, but it is still good to look both ways, as we were taught as children. When there is not a painted crosswalk, the vehicles have the right of way, so look both ways, twice. As for Would You. When you enter or leave your home do you leave your door standing open for 45 seconds? A lot of heat and air is lost in that amount of time. Our ADA (American Disabilities Act) self-opening doors stay open for that length of time. Those self-opening doors are a necessary convenience for persons who are disabled and need that amount of time to enter with a walker, a cane, crutches or in some cases an arm full of equipment. Those of us who are capable of opening a door with our own two hands shouldn’t feel we need to press the self-opening door button. We all pay for that lost heat and air. I will now step off my soapbox but I hope I have left you food for thought. Bob Mariani, General Manager

SCVCA Year-End Operating Fund by Bob Mariani

Once again the Association ended up with a positive operating fund balance. This year it was just over $210,000 (unaudited). This situation is positive in that it’s typically considered better to end up in the black than in the red. On the other hand, having a surplus in the operating fund can be viewed as a negative if it is considered to be generated by a “padded” budget. My thought is that the surplus was generated by good management, a productive committee system, solid Board oversight and a bit of luck. You can draw your own conclusions on this matter. Regardless of how the “surplus” came about, the primary purpose of this article is to outline the general areas of revenue and expenses that primarily caused the end result. Let’s start with the Association’s revenue. The largest factor here was Café revenue that was more than $80,000 over budget. This revenue level was unexpected due to the fact that the Café revenue in 2009-10 was lower than the revenue in 2008-09 which was thought to possibly be a trend. Now we anticipate that the Café revenue may be on an upward trend with the marketing that is in place along with good food, service and prices. Other areas where revenue exceeded budget are Advertising, by nearly $30,000 and Activities Department, by approximately $45,000. In regard to the expense side, one major variance was utilities, which ended up nearly $64,000 under budget. This takes into account savings in gas, electricity and water, much of which is due to recent energy savings efforts. One other area under budget was wages/benefits, by about $40,000. These savings were more than offset by over-budget expenses in the areas of cost of goods sold (expected when sales of goods are well in excess GM Article continues on page 4

GM article continues from page 3 of budget), repair and maintenance, supplies and depreciation. Again, the end result is a fund balance of $210,778 which is about 3.5% of the entire budget. After the audited statement is issued, the Board will determine how to manage this fund balance. The preliminary indication is that some of these funds will be transferred to the Contingency Fund to bring that fund to a balance that is approximately 5% of the Association’s annual revenue, and the balance of the surplus will be transferred to the Capital Fund. However, this is only my preliminary thought, based on prior budget discussions and the 2011-12 Board of Director goals.

Do you think you might switch your cable TV service to a satellite dish? Did you know that an ARC member will, when requested, come to your property and find the best location for the dish? We strongly encourage you to use this free service. You are also required to inform Jim Cundiff, the Community Services Coordinator, of the location of your satellite dish even if you do not use this service. There are guidelines in the Development Standards that must be adhered to by everyone in the community whether our service has been used or not. A dish must be permanently screened from view from the street, neighboring properties and the golf course. It must be ground mounted or roof mounted on a flat roof where it can be completely screened by a parapet. House mounted dishes are the last option for positioning a dish. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. In July we delivered 440 pounds of cans which netted the CAC $343.20. Since this is the first month of our fiscal year this is the yearly total to date. Welcome back to residents who have been traveling and are ready to return and begin fall activities. The Loan Room is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8-9 AM for loan of tables, chairs, beds, children’s items and medical equipment. You can reserve items up to two months in advance. Have you seen the small blue-topped roll-around bins in front of SCV houses on the weekly recycling day? Waste Management Corp., 744-2600, will give you a free one if you call them. You will no longer have to separate glass, plastic, newspaper and cans, just dump them all in together and wheel it out to the curb. The new bins come in several sizes, but the smallest will do for most households. Cardboard boxes still have to be broken down and flattened; but all except the really big ones will fit in the new bins. Aluminum cans should still be saved for recycling in the Community Assistance Committee’s bin in the alcove on the street beside the Social Hall. So if hauling those recycling boxes in and out has kept you from recycling, now is the time to go Green. The ending Financial Statements for fiscal year 20102011 have important information that clearly show how our marketing programs relate to improved revenues. The golf course had $103,346 of revenue from direct outside golf play this fiscal year; last year there was no revenue from this source. Our marketing group and the golf staff credit much of this revenue to our intensive marketing of the course to non-resident golfers who previously knew nothing about The Views Golf Course. Revenue of the Café for this year was $53,532 higher than the last fiscal year. We know that 9,616 Café visits were generated by marketing, so our marketing had a positive impact on increasing awareness of and income to the Café. The marketing group sent information to 2,635 potential new residents who responded to ads in “Where to Retire” magazine and to 2,364 other prospects replying to our advertising in the Tucson Relocation Guide this year, showing we are reaching a broader group of possible new buyers. There were 125 houses sold in Sun City Vistoso this past fiscal year, and 32 of the new buyers were in our prospect data base, which means 25% of the home purchasers had a documented contact with the community through our marketing program. The marketing group feels this very clearly establishes the value of our efforts in promoting SCV as a highly desirable place to live. Our marketing group continues to work diligently on our multiple marketing objectives, and look at other ways to improve or change our offerings. The administration marketing group, headed by Robin Coulter, is doing an outstanding job in accomplishing the objectives of the overall marketing program. To document the results of our endeavors, we are collecting many statistics to measure our success with the various programs, and this does take a lot of staff time and effort. We are currently emphasizing efforts to increase the number of non-resident golf pass holder members and increase the total number of rounds played on our course.

Our monsoon rains arrived and so did many weeds. Keep an eye out for desert broom and spurge, and catch them early. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard. With the summer rains, new growth on trees occurred. Note that trees must be kept trimmed up more than six feet above sidewalks so as not to encroach upon walkers and for visibility of stop signs at corners. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yards. Is your house number blocked by vegetation? When a possible emergency arises, your home address needs to be found quickly. For safety reasons, please trim any vegetation blocking numbers on your home, so that they are visible from the street. Our committee wants to issue a special thanks to all the residents who work diligently in keeping their yards in good shape throughout the year, especially in the summer months. When you join, the first thing is training in how to patrol, record keeping, and how to report incidents to the OVPD (Oro Valley Police Dept.). Members always patrol in pairs trying to cover as many of our streets as possible in a three-hour shift, about 30 miles per shift. Our main purpose is to be extra eyes for the OVPD. If they see anything suspicious, they call 911 and the OVPD responds in minutes. If they notice an open garage door, an invitation to theft and critters, the homeowner is called. If they find a water leak or other issue on Sun City Vistoso properties, they call an administration official. First of all, I find it amusing to be quoting Wikipedia as a source since I grew up having Webster Dictionary and the Encyclopedia Britannica as the standard for information gathering, but that was a different time and a different world. The Wikipedia definition of the mobile web “refers to the use of Internet-connected applications, or browser-based access to the Internet from a mobile device, such as a smart phone or tablet computer, connected to a wireless network.” If a company hasn’t created a web presence, it’s behind in marketing and information sharing. The new technology no longer requires you to be sitting at your home in front of a computer. It’s something you carry in your hands, your smart phone. Retired people are the busiest people I know. SCV provides many choices for those who choose to live here. There are 133 clubs all with eager participants. It seems that each year we are adding new clubs. This is a sign that our community has growing new interests along with the established clubs. Golf, tennis, pickleball, water volleyball and bocce ball are a few athletic choices. Do you take advantage of all that is offered in SCV? Just one look at the monthly Tipster and seeing all that is planned and scheduled should make you proud and happy to live in SCV. I am pleased to bring top notch entertainment at such low prices, coupled with the fact that you can drive your car or golf cart or even walk to see the shows that are planned. In my recent survey residents indicated that they still want entertainment brought into the community. Please remember that your support is what determines if that continues. Take advantage of entertainment that you would normally have to drive a long distance to see and enjoy at much higher prices. We are still disappointed about the unfortunate incident that occurred in the Library recently and have worked diligently to get things back to normal. At the same time, the kindness of so many residents and certain organizations has been overwhelming. Residents have donated many movies on DVD from their personal collections as replacements for missing items. When visiting the Library, others have put something “extra” in the donation box. The Friends of the Library and the Sun City Foundation have awarded the Library grants in matching amounts to be used exclusively for replenishing our inventory of films on DVD. Without the help of these individuals and organizations, it would have taken many months and possibly years to rebuild our DVD collection. Thanks to everyone who has brightened our days! If you haven’t been in the Library during most of the summer months because you believe our movie selection is sparse, come in and see for yourself. We are restocked and currently have 1,300 films to chose from with more arriving every week. Friends of the Library

Last summer the fairways continued to show a decline of Bermuda grass during transition in June and July. Multiple changes were implemented in order to avoid this continual decline. The seed rate was reduced during overseeding, the preparation stage prior to overseeding was greatly reduced, mowing patterns were changed to reduce compaction on the Bermuda grass during the winter months, and aerification of the fairways was delayed until later in the summer to minimize damaging the growing Bermuda grass. However, despite all of these changes the fairways are again showing a reduced amount of Bermuda grass this summer. Only a couple things are constant each year and they are the reclaimed irrigation water and traffic. The reclaimed water is loaded with salts that have a negative impact on both the soil and the plants. The underlying Bermuda grass has not only to compete with the overseeded rye grass, but also try to grow roots in salt-contaminated soil, with mowers and golf carts driving on top of it. The grass next to the Pro Shop is irrigated with potable water, and is only driven on by an occasional mower leading to a perfect transition and high-quality turf. The chipping area is irrigated with reclaimed water but the only traffic is the occasional mower, leading to a high-quality transition. The only way to combat these salts is leaching with higher volumes of irrigation or rain, aerification, and application of soil amendments for buffering. This winter will see more aerification, more applications of amendments, and praying for help from Mother Nature.

September 21 we are planning a day trip to Green valley to meet with the Parkinson’s Support Group there. We feel we can learn something about the way they have organized their meetings. That will leave time for the trip and a little lunch before the meeting. October 19 the Sun City Vistoso Parkinson’s Support Group will move their regular meetings to 10:30 AM, Catalina Vista. We welcome all Parkinson’s people and/or their caregivers. The exercise classes will remain as scheduled. We are excited about our exercise group. Ray Jerkins personalizes the exercises to each individual. He has just attended a training seminar focused on working with people with Parkinson’s. Storytelling with Gourds and Silver Article and photos by Curt Gates

Items included in this section must be open to all residents and either be an Association-sponsored or an annual club event of interest to the entire community.

One of the best painters of the American West says, “I’m a storyteller.” And thinking of his audience, he adds, “Maybe they’ll understand the story or inject their own interpretation.” Carmelita and Darrell Martin, who are also storytellers, but storytellers who use neither words nor oil on canvas. Carmelita uses gourds, and Darrell uses silver. You can meet Carmelita and Darrell at the Sun City Vistoso Arts and Crafts Festival in Oro Valley on Saturday, October 1. Decorated gourds go back some 4000 years in Peru. Carmelita tried painting gourds, but she says she didn’t find the process too satisfying. She then began to add traditional techniques like burning and carving designs onto the gourds. The carving led to inlays, which then led to adding objects such as beads. Darrell says he started making jewelry because, “I married a lady whose family were rock hounds. I started cutting the gemstones we found. Then I needed to make settings for the stones.” From finding gem garnets in the mountains of Idaho, Darrell’s journey as a jewelry artist evolved to making pieces that featured symbolic images. Many beginning silversmiths lack patience to master an ability to saw intricate designs in sheet silver, Darrell had the patience. The quality of his finished work is outstanding— and deserving of hand-crafted chains. That led him into a whole new world that combines the metal-working skills of medieval armor-makers with the textile arts of weavers and lace-makers. At the festival you can enjoy the challenge of interpreting the stories embedded in Darrell and Carmelita’s work—and you can be creative in making and injecting your own interpretations. That’s a great feature of an arts and crafts festival, the opportunity to interact with the participants and their stories. See Coming Events for details on the Arts and Crafts Festival. Jump on the bus and have a great time at the WildHorsePass Casino. Although there is no charge for this trip, there are a limited number of seats. You must sign up and get a ticket from Coco or Pam, Administration, starting Tuesday, October 11, 8 AM. Two tickets per person. The bus will depart SCV 9 AM and depart from the Casino 4 PM. On July 14, 16 members of the SCV Hiking club gathered in Sesto, Italy, a quaint village near the Austrian border. The next day our 10-day hiking trip began in earnest. Each day’s hike brought us to a different mountain hut where we delighted in the offerings of traditional local fare. We moved from Sesto to Cortina d’Ampezzo, known as the queen of the Dolomites, in order to more easily reach a variety of mountain trails. We spent one glorious night above the clouds at Refugio Lagazuoi, a mountain hut at over 9,000 ft. The hike up was an arduous 2,400 feet elevation gain over just 2 hours. It was a spectacular adventure! Many thanks to Christa and Michael Lubatkin for organizing the trip and leading the hikes. We will demonstrate how and why to set all the common menu items for best results plus turn the flash on and off, use exposure compensation, and download pictures to a computer. We make pet beds for the Humane Society. By cutting up scraps of fabrics that otherwise would be thrown away, we sew sturdy pillow cases and stuff them with the scraps and polyester fiberfill. However, we do need more fabric scraps and polyester fiberfill. So if you are sewing, save the leftovers and bring them to the sewing room marked “Pet Beds” or call Jan Bohe for other arrangements.
