Association News
From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Our Strength Is YOU
by Steve Knapp What made, makes and keeps our active adult community vital, current and attractive for today and tomorrow? The answer lies within us: all those members who have, do now or will in the future volunteer their experience, skills and time in the interest of us all … supported by hiring of experienced community management professionals/staffers. What about our community’s future? A great example is the remarkable group of talented resident volunteers who stepped forward as the SPC (Strategic Projects Committee) in 2013 chaired by Tut Tustison. Their work has been presented to community members attending Board meetings as individual recommendations, the last of them at the May, 2014 Board session. In addition to criteria for evaluating facility projects, and recommendations for building/facility improvement projects, SPC’s work also includes General Manager succession planning, approaches to community surveys, the challenge of Chalk Creek flood management and the important role of marketing in the future of SCOV. Of particular interest to many is that the strategic timing and scope of the new projects/priorities recommendations are such that project costs are projected to come from accumulated Capital Funds and Asset Reserve Funds so that special owner assessments should not be required to implement them. Work on two SPC (Strategic Projects Committee) recommendations is underway: new Pickleball Courts and relocation of the Bocce Courts. Completed in July, the 77page Strategic Projects Committee 5-Year Plan Report is available in the Library and online at the SCOV website at: www.scovaz.com. Click on Association; scroll to Committees and click on it; then click on Strategic Projects Committee under Other Committees. It will be discussed at the combined Study Session/Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 23. Facility-related projects that require more detailed research and planning have been assigned to an Ad Hoc Task Team, which will work through the many important details for the high priority initiatives including the Pro Shop, Café/ Lounge and Activity Center Projects. This team is comprised of members of the LRPC (Long Range Planning Committee), which is chaired by Leslie Platt. The LRPC, which will also maintain and update the 5-Year Plan as we go forward,

Minutes are available on the LRPC website, and an email address has been established so that community members can provide input. A big THANK YOU to each of you for helping to make SCOV the great community it is! As a Board, we thank you and look forward to your support and help as we work on your behalf. Selecting a Contractor Residents tend to begin having more work done around the house about this time of the year. As a result, I thought I would provide some helpful reminders about selecting a reputable contractor. CRS (Consumer Referral Services): Consider using the CRS for contractors who have been vetted to some degree and are known to have proper licensing. The CRS can be contacted by calling 917-8079 and/or you can find the vendor list on the Members Only side of the SCOV web site. Of course, you may also want to contact the Better Business Bureau and/or the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. First Impressions: In any business, first impressions are important. How a contractor presents himself and maintains his truck, tools and equipment are good indicators of how well he’ll take care of you and your job. Beware Low Bids: Price is always an important consideration when selecting a contractor, but don’t let a low price or a special deal blind you to a potential problem. An extremely low bid should raise a red flag. Take Your Time: If you are pressured during the bidding process by tactics such as “limited-time offers,” look for a different contractor. A prospective contractor should take his time as well, carefully reviewing the specifications of your job before submitting his bid. Beware Materials Discount: Be wary if a contractor offers materials at a discounted rate. Discounted materials are usually seconds, ungraded or below-grade minimums for code, any of which could compromise the quality of your project. Only 20% Up Front: In general, don’t choose a contractor who asks for more than 20 percent of the total cost of a job up front. While some projects require a large initial payment to cover a deposit for products like cabinets or special-order ceramic tile, it doesn’t apply to commodity materials like roofing and lumber, which a legitimate contractor will usually purchase on a 30 day account. Beware Cash-Only Jobs: Finally, a contractor who works on a cash-only basis raises a big red flag. Not only does paying in cash limit your financial recourse if problems arise, the contractor is likely not operating a legitimate business.

We all enjoy watching television. Unfortunately in some situations looking at the way it is brought into our homes is not quite as enjoyable. Unlike cable, satellite dishes cannot be buried underground. Therefore, we need to try to make every effort we can to make the dish as invisible as possible without impacting the reception. The ARC offers a service to homeowners to help them identify the best location of the dish for reception as well as complying with the Development Standards and visibility of the dish from the street. Please contact the Community Services Coordinator to let her know your plans and she will gladly schedule an ARC member to come out to assist you. Everyone is asked that after the installation is complete you provide the location information to the Community Services Coordinator. Consumer Referral

If you’re searching for an artist who can do it all, check out September featured artist, Bev Fairful. Bev’s expertise has expanded over the years to include all types of sewing, arts and crafts. Bev has perfected her skills in wood carving, ceramics, dichroic jewelry and stained glass work. Although sewing is her favorite skill, she enjoys blending all these abilities together to become the one person to call for your home decorating needs. Loan Room - Community Assistance
Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Reservation line 917-8052 Third Thursday, 3 PM, WC1
Aluminum Can Donations: put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Please continue to save your aluminum cans because this supports our Loan Room, providing a way to purchase new equipment as needed. On August 19, we made the first trip of the fiscal year delivered 580 pounds of aluminum cans, for which we received $342. We need to make sure all of new residents are aware of our recycling program, so please, if you have new neighbors, advise them of this program. The Community Assistance Committee (CAC) operates the Loan Room at the end of the Cart Barn. This is a year round service and provides items to residents of SCOV including medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats and more. We also loan rollaway beds, tables and chairs, cars seats and cots for children and some children’s toys. We are open from 8-9 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. Please feel free to come and visit us to see the many items we have available. There is no charge for this service. Long Range Planning Committee/Ad Hoc LRPC Task Team

The SCOV Board of Directors is exploring the possibility of a smaller, more efficient Pro Shop. Funding for such a project is available. Members of the LRPC, while working on a strategic plan for SCOV, are also serving as an ad hoc task force to prepare a Pro Shop project proposal. Factors being considered are location, design, functionality and cost. Before we present a proposal to the Board, we would like your input and suggestions. Email us at proshoptaskteam@ suncityorovalley.com. A public presentation will be held later this year. Meanwhile, watch the Association Calendar for meeting dates and visit the Association website, Long Range Planning/Ad Hoc LRPC Task Team to view our agendas and minutes. Your participation is encouraged. Marketing and Publicity

The Marketing Committee resumed meeting in August. To increase focus on our three objectives, we’ve created three sub-committees: Café Revenues co-chaired by Laurie Dvorak and Barbara McNeill; Golf Revenues chaired by Tim Kelley and Home Values chaired by Barbara Ross. Subcommittees are meeting with internal clients to establish marketing goals, strategies, and tactics. Neighborhood Pride

Monsoon rains did arrive, just not as much as last year, and new growth of foliage happened anyway. Keep an eye out for the weeds Desert Broom and Spurge, and catch them early. Look at the cracks in your sidewalk, driveway,

and where the cement meets the asphalt, as that is where Spurge is many times found. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard. Trees and shrubs experienced new growth too. Trees must be kept trimmed up more than seven feet above sidewalks, may not overhang any street by more than two feet, and should not block visibility of stop signs. Shrubs should not extend out over pedestrian walkways. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yards. Special thanks goes to all who work hard keeping their yards in good shape, especially in the summer months! Please keep up the good work. Posse
Chair Robert Hefner 825-4825 First Tuesday, 3 PM, Activity Center/Hopi www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ What Does the Posse Do?
The main purpose of the Posse is to keep Sun City Oro Valley safe. In addition to being extra eyes for the OVPD (Oro Valley Police Department) to report anything suspicious, we also alert homeowners when they have left their garage doors open. An open garage door is an invitation to theft and critters. We patrol the streets of SCOV every night in two Posse vehicles with two Posse members per vehicle in three-hour shifts. If you would like to see what it is like to be a part of this important citizen patrol, call Bob Hefner to arrange for a ride along with one of our patrols. Properties

Artisan Center WiFi
We are pleased to announce there is now WiFi in all our Artisan Center buildings. The service was requested by several clubs that meet there. The Board responded by an affirmative vote to fund this project. We have had assistance from resident IT expert, Ed Zwerling, in developing the request for proposal and reviewing the contract. And now the service has been installed. The clubs have already been talking about the different ways they can use WiFi to enhance their training and education. The modelers have various YouTube videos of different modeling clubs around the country. There are videos on various woodworking techniques or silversmithing methods. The options are wide open for our clubs to use this service. The WiFi service also extends into the lovely courtyard area. There are trees and benches in which you can sit and enjoy the Internet. Come by, enjoy the fresh air and surf the Net in the Artisan Center courtyard. You might also enjoy visiting with the different clubs in this area, especially the new modeler’s facility. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius
I did not know about that!
I am always stunned when a resident calls and informs me that they did not know about an event. All Association events are listed in the Tipster, on bulletin boards and sent out by email if you are registered for “In the Know. ” First. the Tipster is a great resource for the community. As I have said before, I meet with other program directors from local area communities. Their response is always the same “your newsletter puts ours to shame.” Don’t just glance through the Tipster when it first comes out, keep it until month’s end and I am sure you will refer to it several times. Bulletin boards or large posters announce what is going on in the community. SCOV clubs are always posting something that their club may be presenting. When you enter or exit a building, take the time to give the boards a glance to see if something may interest you. Finally, “In the Know.” Signing up to receive Association event information on your computer is very easy. I strongly advise you to sign up for events or any of the other topics that you would like to receive. If you are not sure how to sign up, stop by my office and I will be happy to show you how or sign you up myself. Community Services - Katy Mosier
Office open 10 AM-Noon, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center 917-8058 kmosier@suncityorovalley.com Illuminated House Numbers for Safety
As you already know, illuminated house number boards are the required standard on all SCOV homes. Should an emergency arise, your home address needs to be found quickly. Please trim any vegetation blocking the address numbers on your home so that they are clearly visible from the street for the entire frontage of the lot. A quick walk along that frontage adjacent to the street should give you a good idea of whether the numbers can be seen from all angles. Make sure all four lights in the address board are burning brightly so that the numbers are visible at night. If your address board light bulbs are very dim or burned

out and need to be replaced, the light bulbs are available at Ace Hardware on Rancho Vistoso Blvd. and Tangerine. Occasionally, the circuit board or transformer which controls the lights on the address board will fail. If this happens, ask about it at Ace Hardware. On another subject, in case you missed last month’s Tipster article from the Architectural Review Committee, there have been some changes with regard to the ARC submittal process. Just a reminder that it is important that all submittals be presented in person to the Community Services office in the Welcome Center by the Tuesday prior to the next scheduled ARC meeting. It is also important that you or a designated representative be present when the ARC member reviews your project prior to the meeting. Food & Beverage Director - Vince Hotz September looks to be a busy month at The Café. Here’s what’s happening: Our herb tower is in full swing and we will be incorporating some of the fresh herbs and vegetables into our daily specials. There are lots of fun events this month, including a happy hour featuring desserts, a potato bar, a Mexican buffet and a Cajun buffet. Don’t forget about the pastry and coffee special for $4. The afternoon menu is available until 5 PM and we have added a pulled pork slider to the offerings. Our tap beer selection now includes two rotating taps, 1 seasonal and one local beer. I hope to see you here soon! The Café is offering you a chance to receive a free breakfast or lunch if you turn in a comment card. Monthly comment cards are drawn randomly for the free meal. The July winners are: Jerry Shim, J. Symmers, Marty Krutz, Fran Strandskov and Edie Royce. Congratulations and bon appétit. SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano

No monetary support is received from the Sun City Association to purchase any of the above items. To join Friends of the Library, see a volunteer at the desk. Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs

September is the start of our overseeding on the golf course. The course will be closed from September 20–October 9. We will reopen Friday, October 10 and will be cart path only through the end of October. During overseeding the Pro Shop will have limited hours of operation. We will be closed during the week but Friday-Sunday we will be open from 9 AM–2 PM. This would be an excellent time to get your shoes re-spiked, buy shaft labels to put on your clubs so they will be returned to you if you lose them, or get your clubs re-gripped. Walkers may still use the cart paths for their morning or evening exercise, however please do not walk on the golf course grass. When we re-open on October 10, tee times will begin at 7:30 AM and shotgun starts at 8 AM. Tuesday’s shotgun will start at 11:30 AM and the golf course will be closed in the morning for maintenance. All walkers and riders must be off the course by 7 AM. Thank you for your cooperation. We will once again support the Patriot Golf Day Program. This is a very worthy cause as the monies collected go to The Folds of Honor. This foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. We ask anyone playing golf or just wishing to donate, to come to the golf shop and drop a dollar or two in our canister.
Utility Box Painting Continues

Superintendent - Michael Kropf Where did the summer go? September always marks the end of the summer season for golf maintenance. The focus during the summer months is to establish a good base of Bermuda grass before the next overseeding. This summer the Bermuda grass was very good coming out of the spring so less work was required to re-establish the base, and more work was focused at generating a better root system for a stronger base. In May and June the golf course was in the best condition of many years. Transition was very good and only a few bad areas needed to be repaired. Lots of changes have been made over the years with the goal of having this kind of transition. However, one big difference from previous years was the mild winter. Before last year the last few winters were very cold with stretches of weather in the single digits. The course was closed several times due to snow accumulations as well as frozen greens that didn’t thaw for entire days. These extreme cold temperatures impacted the underlying Bermuda grass a great deal. The roots and plant reserves were desiccated, and in the spring, when the Bermuda grass tried to green back up, it couldn’t compete with overseeded rye. This left bare areas in the early summer that required extensive work and left a weak base for the next overseeding. Remember, Mother Nature still has a lot of influence on the course conditions. Even with a sound maintenance program, severe weather can have a negative impact. Hopefully, with the stronger base from this summer, the conditions will continue to improve every year. Golf Advisory

Hot weather and a paucity of players characterize this time of year. However, when Mike and his crew have finished with overseeding (September 21 through October 10), things will again be looking up with a number of scheduled events. Kicking off the season will be an Oh Crap Scramble and Bash October 22. Next, we have the President’s Cup on November 5-12. This will be followed by the popular Turkey Shoot on the November 19. So hang in there; seasonal residents will begin filtering in and things are shaping up for another great season here at The Views.

At our September meeting (on Labor Day) we will discuss Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson. Note: Different Meeting Location-Desert Oasis/Ocotillo. Pak Jun Do is the haunted son of a lost mother, a singer stolen to Pyongyang, and an influential father who runs a work camp for orphans. Superiors in the state soon recognize the boy’s loyalty and keen instincts. Considering himself “a humble citizen of the greatest nation in the world,” Jun Do rises in the ranks. Driven to the absolute limit of what any human being could endure, he boldly takes on the treacherous role of rival to Kim Jong-il in an attempt to save the woman he loves, Sun Moon, a legendary actress who was so pure, she didn’t know what starving people looked like. At our October meeting (regular location) we will discuss Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. What if you could live again and again, until you got it right? On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born, the third child of a wealthy English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in any number of ways. Ursula’s world is in turmoil, facing the unspeakable evil of the two greatest wars in history. Bowling League - Pathfinders

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Monday, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis
Rickey Laurentiis begins the poem Black Gentleman with an intriguing statement. “There are eyes, glasses even, but still he can’t see what the world sees seeing him. They know an image of him they themselves created. He knows his own…” Why are members of one group apparently unable even to distinguish the detailed features of another? Is it their unwillingness to accept these others as equal to themselves and thus worthy of individual discovery? “What an eye can’t imagine, it can’t find…” How can we develop insight when our eyesight is so clouded? The poem concludes with a provocative question, “What will the incredible night of him say here, to his thousand moons, now that he can rise up to any tree, rope or none, but not fear it?” This dark, somewhat brooding poem, manages to illuminate one of the reasons we can’t seem to achieve peaceful resolutions to world problems. Join us for poetic explorations of personal and universal themes. Poker

Town Of Oro Valley Download the new OV App
Now that we have WiFi in the shop, we have the incentive to use smartphones, tablets and laptops there to access a wide variety of woodworking information that is available on the internet. There are many good websites. One of the best is TheWoodWhisperer.com. It is full of great articles and videos on tools, project ideas, techniques, safety and many other subjects. For those who like to design their own projects, especially furniture and cabinetry, there is SketchUp, which is a free 3D modeling and design tool that is used by many woodworkers. SketchupForWoodworkers.com is a website with tutorials which will help you learn SketchUp. It’s not hard to learn and makes project design enjoyable, quick and precise. Go to the Useful Links page (http://suncityorovalley.com/clubs/woodworkers/links.html) of the SCOV Woodworkers website and look under the September Tipster heading for links to the items mentioned in this article.
The Town of Oro Valley is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever mobile app, designed to bring residents and guests closer to the information they need. Developed entirely in-house by Town staff, the Free OV App is your gateway to the most popular information on the Oro Valley website, including details on parks, the archery range, hiking and biking trails, department contact information and links to online services including bill payment, permit search and Town Council meetings. Download the Android app on Google Play or the Apple app from iTunes.

I write this testimonial about Wilda Sobansky’s fine work as a broker for Long Realty. Through her fine efforts we sold our home due largely to her marketing knowledge. She came to our home, took creative photos, and discussed the process of selling a home. It was clear and concise. I was skeptical of selling at a slow time in our local economy, especially a smaller home. But when there was the good “bite” she was on it! She kept us informed about the process and guided us skillfully. She was patient with us with our questions and was always there for us right through the long distance closing process. I would highly recommend her. Sincerely, John Wall, Home Seller
