Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors tkelleyscov@gmail.com Community Amenities and Revenues by Tim Kelley SCOV is an active adult community that has a significant capital investment in amenities that support our lifestyle. We have over 130 different clubs that, to varying degrees, use these amenities for club member benefits. The SCOV Board of Directors (Board) has the responsibility of managing and maintaining our amenities in a fiscally sound manner while continuing to update them such that they remain current and responsive to our ever-changing resident interests. Three of our amenities generate revenue. They are: The Views Golf Club; The Views Restaurant and the Gift Shop. The Gift Shop is the retail outlet for resident artists and makes a small amount of money. Golf and restaurant revenues are less than operating expenses. When the Board approves the budget for the golf and restaurant operations, the Board establishes the operational cost objective for management staff. For the fiscal year just ended the operational loss for the golf and restaurant respectively were $158 and $71 per home. These compare to budgeted losses of $194 and $29 per home. Under current management, the restaurant performance has improved significantly. The Board approves staffing and capital projects that are intended to enhance these operations. In the case of golf, the Board approved the Director of Golf position in the last budget cycle. The goal is to improve the golf operation and increase resident membership and rounds played. This will further narrow the difference between revenue and expenses. In the case of the restaurant, the Board has approved a capital expenditure to improve the efficiency and capacity of the kitchen such that service improves, and kitchen and seating capacity are more closely matched. It is incumbent on the Board to communicate with the residents. A presentation is currently being developed for the golf operation. This presentation will include the steps taken by the Board, staff and committees over the last few years

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Why Do We Need Reserves? Equipment and major components like the roofs must be replaced from time to time, regardless of whether we plan for the expense. We prefer to plan and set the funds aside now. Reserve funds aren’t an extra expense; they just spread out expenses more evenly. There are important reasons we put Association monies into reserves every month: 1. Reserve funds must meet fiduciary and professional requirements. A replacement fund may be required by: • Any secondary mortgage market in which the Association participates (e.g., Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA); • State statutes, regulations, or court decisions; • The community’s governing documents. 2. Reserve funds provide for major repairs and replacements that we know will be necessary at some point in time. Although a common area roof may be replaced when it is 25 years old, every owner who lives in SCOV should share its replacement costs. 3. Reserve funds minimize the need for special assessments or borrowing. For most Association members, this is the most important reason. 4. Reserve funds enhance resale values. Lenders and real estate agents are aware of the ramifications for new buyers if the reserves are inadequate. Many states, including Arizona, require associations to disclose the amounts in their reserve funds to prospective purchasers. 5. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants requires the community association to disclose its reserve funds in its financial statements. SCOV began its Reserve Study the last week of July. We anticipate the study to be completed by the end of October. The study is being done by an independent national Reserve Study Company.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! SCOV Genealogy Club: Find the Butcher, the Baker or the Candlestick Maker in Your Family

ere your ancestors a butcher, a baker or a candlestick maker, or maybe a Revolutionary War hero or a Suffragette? Join the genealogy sleuths at the SCOV Genealogy Club and find out about the people who made you who you are. What are you going to do with all those wonderful memories you have saved in photo albums, scrapbooks or just in that box that moves every time you do? Joan Allen relates how she became interested in genealogy. “I’d been interested in my family history since finding a partially filled out family tree in my baby book, but I didn’t know anything about doing genealogy until I found our club when we moved here. It has been a wonderfully lifechanging experience.” Whether you just want to start labeling old photos, or collect family lore and legend into a publication, the Genealogy Club can help you arrange all those bits and pieces into a format you can pass on to your children and A boy from Denmark marries a girl from grandchildren. Missouri in 1880. Holly Gibson’s genealogy “My husband’s research uncovered information about her mother was born in Tucgreat grandparents Jens and Elizabeth Holm. son in 1910. It’s been an adventure tracing her roots because she does not have a birth certificate since she was born at home. We’re developing a better picture of Tucson in those early years,” says club member, Sally Moya. Oro Valley, Tucson and Arizona are rich with history. Native Americans, Jesuit missionaries, gunslingers at the O.K. Corral or gold miners in the Oro Blanco region, are all part of the history of Arizona, and each of these men and women have stories to tell through genealogical research. Maybe one of these fascinating people is one of your ancestors. The Genealogy Club offers something for everyone interested in learning about their family history. The club offers a beginners class each year to help those new to the hobby (or obsession, as some of us call it) get started. There are also special interest groups for members who want to learn more about specialized areas of genealogy such as DNA or build-

ing a family tree with software like Legacy. Are you interested in becoming a member of a lineage society such as Daughters of the American Revolution or Sons of the American Revolution? There are members of the club who can assist you with your research and membership application. Long-time Genealogy Club member, and our own computer guru, Mike Carroll, tells a story about one of his ancestors. “My grandmother was a poor Irish farm girl who immigrated to New York City in 1899. For some reason she sailed to Boston. ‘I wonder why?’ I said to a Genealogy Club friend. Not missing a beat, she replied, ‘She probably wanted to stop by Hyannis Port on her way down’” The stories about immigrating to the United States are enumerable, and the access the club provides to databases such as Ancestry.com provide the opportunity to find your parents, grandparents or great grandparents and beyond. The Genealogy Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month, October through May, 1-3 PM in the Activity Center/ Navajo Room. Each meeting includes a speaker on topics related to the pursuit of those elusive ancestors. We welcome guests to our monthly meetings. The club maintains a genealogy library, complete with computers, books and journals to help you with your quest. No buying expensive computer programs or subscriptions to genealogy Barb Krecklow, Sue Huffer and Stephanie Consalvo (l-r) websites; researching in the Genealogy Club computer lab. the club has done it for you. We have subscriptions to Ancestry for records, GenealogyBank for newspapers and Fold3 for military research, available to you in the club library. And better yet, we have volunteers who serve as monitors and mentors in the library who are willing to help you get started. So, if you are interest in exercising your detective skills and learning more about the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker in your family, join the members of the Genealogy Club at our next meeting. Maybe you will discover a longlost cousin living next door. Or as club member Mitch Mitchell tells us, “My mother always told me we were related to Benjamin Franklin on my dad’s side of the family. It took me a long time to sleuth this, but I eventually found I am a first cousin nine-times removed from old Ben.”

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Potential Resident Tours You’ve seen that sleek white e-car (we call it SCOV1) zipping around our community showing your next neighbor why SCOV is the best place to live. In the past fiscal year that e-car and our most excellent resident Ambassadors have shared the SCOV story on 425 tours. You may know that sales in our community in 2016 were the highest we’ve had since we’ve been keeping track starting in 2000 with 235 homes sold. As I write this article there are only 21 homes on the market. SCOV is in demand. Let’s keep up the momentum. Utilize the power of word of mouth and share with your friends and family what a wonderful place SCOV is to live. Encourage them to come and experience it for themselves. Tours can be set up by stopping by the Administration Office, calling 520-917-8068 or online at suncityorovalley.com/request. Don’t keep it to yourself; spread the word that at Sun City Oro Valley, “It’s More Than Living... It’s a Lifestyle!”

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 New Things Happening If you read the “Coming Events” section of the Tipster you will see that there is much to do this fall. Take advantage of the free events that are being offered as well as paid events. Coming soon, “CHIPPO.” I would like to remind you that when you arrive at the AFC with your spouse and swipe one membership card twice, you are indicating that only one person entered the building. In the event of an accident in which the person who did not swipe their card is injured, there is no proof that they were even in the facility. I ask that each resident swipe their own card. Thank you.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Due Diligence Before Hiring a Contractor An article dated July 27 in the Arizona Daily Star warns Arizona residents about illegal contractors who operate in our area. One of our residents suggested that we review the article and summarize it for you. Basically, it talks about how important it is to investigate a potential contractor before hiring or giving any money to that individual. To protect a homeowner, it is important to hire licensed contractors. “In Arizona, a contractor needs a license to perform work that requires a building permit or is valued at more than $1,000 including labor. A handyman, by comparison, doesn’t need a license but is restricted to casual and minor jobs that cost less than $1,000 and don’t require a permit.” The article further urges consumers to research potential contractors on an online database of licensed contractors at azroc.gov/roc/contractorsearch.html if they are going to do any major work. For questions or to report problems, contact the Arizona Registrar of Contractors Office in Tucson at 520628-6345. Before you hire a contractor, other suggestions are: • Avoid door-to-door solicitors offering low cost construction services;

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2017

• Obtain several bids or estimates; • Ask for references and check them; • Do not pay cash. Source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors website and Arizona Daily Star.

These labels denote items that have either been used at one time in an Institute of Learning in Retirement (ILR) course, or have been donated by, or purchased using funds donated by ILR. There is even a designated shelf for current ILR courses. Just above that shelf are two rows of books with yellow spine labels, our Sun City author section, populated with books by your neighbors. Come see what they have written. New this month we have: Y is for Yesterday by Sue Grafton, and Glass Houses by Louise Penny in fiction; The American Spirit by David McCullough and The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory in large print; and “Big Little Lies Season 1” (based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling book), and Gifted (Chris Evans) in video. The fall and winter schedule of visiting authors is posted in the library, with a focus on Arizona history and Arizona authors. Thanks to the efforts of the Friends of the Library and your generous support, all our author talks are still free of charge. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Begin Slowly and Gradually Build Unfamiliarity with movements and equipment can prove frustrating enough that you may consider throwing in the towel. Take heart; it is normal to feel awkward in the beginning, especially if you have undertaken an activity that you are not familiar with. It doesn’t take long for your skill to improve if you stick with it. After all, even fitness instructors were once beginners. If you attempt too much, too soon it will lead to soreness, fatigue and/or injuries. Work at your own level, start out slowly and gradually increase duration and level of difficulty as your body progresses. Getting fit is not an overnight proposition, it’s a lifestyle commitment. Don’t expect immediate dramatic changes in your body shape or weight loss. Although changes are happening internally, most external benefits won’t become visible for the first four to six weeks. Stay focused on your lifestyle choice and celebrate the internal benefits you’re experiencing such as increased energy, less stress and anxiety, higher self-esteem and an increased feeling of well-being. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, September 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, September 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Association Committees Active Health Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com Nov.-Apr, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health Are you aware that one out of three older adults fall more than once per year, and these falls can result in severe fractures? In addition, arthritis is a problem for people of all ages. Being mobile and flexible are important issues for our population. There is no easy fix, but there are ways to diminish the risk. One of these is Tai Chi because it works on large and small muscles as well as joints. This exercise helps us be more flexible and attuned to our bodies. For the past two years, the Active Health Committee has sponsored a Balance Class using simple Tai Chi moves and principles. The response has been overwhelming and those who take the class improve in flexibility and balance. We now have three certified SCOV instructors to continue this class at Sun City. Please join them on Monday mornings at 10:30 AM in AFC beginning October 2. Since the class is now Association-sponsored, the cost will be $20/10 classes by purchasing a punch-card in the Welcome Center or a drop-in charge of $3/class. For any questions, call Judy Greenberg at 631-974-4375 or Laura Carey at 520334-7946.

Architectural Review Janice Strassburg 520-338-2568 janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3 The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) only has control over improvements or changes to the exterior of a residence. That includes additions, major landscaping, walls, fences or whatever you might wish to do. Painting, new roofing, pavers and some minor changes may have in-house approval and not require a submittal to the ARC Committee. Our plant list is in the process of being updated by a member of the U of A staff. We plan to stay in compliance with the Town of Oro Valley code for trees 25 feet tall or less. A quick tip to refresh your mailbox and delay a need for paint is to wash it well and then apply a coat of Armor All. It will shine like new and last for some time before it needs to be reapplied. It has sure worked on our set of boxes.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran vendor@suncityorovalley.com Here are directions for looking up the Vendor List on the website: Go to scovaz.com > Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List > Read More. Food and Beverage Advisory Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-Jun., First Fri. Welcome Chef Paul Blackwell, who in just a few days has made a big impact. A recent Friday evening happy hour experience: “We joined a crowd of smiling faces at 6 PM enjoying each other and the lively entertainment duo. Errick, the Restaurant Manager, greeted us at the door, recommending the dinner special. Within a minute, Neil asked for our drink order, followed shortly by Nynetta, one of the bartenders, with menus. Our drinks were quickly delivered by Don, another bartender. Neil came back to take our order of wild-caught salmon florentine with romano cream sauce, sautéed potatoes and spinach. Cavin, our busser, delivered a piping hot and beautifully presented plate within five minutes. The salmon was amazing. Compliments to the cooks: Marvin, Darrell and Chef Paul. Ashley, another smiling busser, took our empty plates as soon as we were done. Soon, Neil returned with the bill for payment, ‘Whenever you are ready.’ We continued with our conversation, no one rushing us to leave, even though it was after the 7 PM closing time. This more than met our expectations: a perfect service team effort along with impressive food. A salute also to all the restaurant staff not mentioned. Thanks to Aalt for putting together such a great hospitality team.” Please support The Views during our short kitchen remodel project, starting the end of August.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 It Happened, Big Time Our monsoon rains did arrive, more than ever before, bringing much growth of foliage and many weeds. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard, especially desert broom and spurge. Spurge is the lowgrowing, fast spreading little Spurge is common this time of year. weed that seems to take over an entire block in just days. Spurge must be sprayed and not pulled in order to get rid of it. For every one that is pulled, two more grow, as their tiny seeds drop off the tap root when pulled. Look at the cracks in your sidewalk, driveway and where the cement meets the asphalt, as that is where spurge is many times found. With the rains, new growth on trees occurred. Trees must be kept trimmed up more than seven feet above sidewalks so as not to encroach upon walkers or block visibility of stop signs at corners. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yards. Special thanks goes to all who worked hard keeping their yards in good shape, especially in the summer months. Please keep up the good work.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1 The Chalk Creek Wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course in addition to threatening homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of semiannual inspections to determine the condition of the creek and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee, together with experienced experts in these matters and HOA staff, participate in the inspections. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. If you are interested in the activities of the Properties Committee, plan to attend our next meeting, September 21, 9 AM, WC1.

The driving range will be closed Monday, September 18 through Wednesday, September 20. It will reopen (mats only) on Thursday, September 21. During over seeding, the Pro Shop will have limited hours of operation. During the week, Monday through Thursday, we will be closed and on Friday through Sunday, we will be open from 9 AM-2 PM. When calling their golf shop, 520-577-4061, please identify yourself as a Views pass holder or non-pass holder. You can book three days in advance. clubs (so they will be returned to you if you lose them) or get your clubs regripped. Walkers may still use the cart paths for their morning or evening exercise; however, do not walk on the golf course grass. When we reopen on Monday, October 9, tee times will begin at 7 AM and shotgun starts at 8 AM. All walkers and riders will need to follow the hours posted on the walking signs. Thank you for your cooperation. We will once again support the Patriot Golf Day Program. This is a very worthy cause as the monies collected go to The Folds of Honor. This foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. We ask anyone playing golf or just wishing to donate, to drop a dollar or two in our canister at the Pro Shop.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 The month of September marks a turning point in the maintenance of the golf course. Starting in the spring, the focus of maintenance was growing and establishing Bermuda grass while eliminating the overseeded ryegrass for the summer months. In September, the focus of maintenance changes to slowing down the growth of Bermuda grass and starting to prepare for overseeding and the return of the winter ryegrass. The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down with growth regulators, a reduction of fertilization and cultural practices like verticutting. This process slowly reduces the thickness of the Bermuda canopy to allow for better infiltration of ryegrass seed. All of the work performed during the summer is to not only provide a great playing surface, but also to provide a good seed bed for overseed. When the grass is too thick, the rye seed gets stuck away from the soil surface and can’t get roots established. This results in a thin overseed that doesn’t look good when the Bermuda goes dormant in the winter. This summer we had a really good transition from ryegrass to Bermuda grass which resulted in only a few areas requiring repairs. The worst hole was #6 and especially the green fairway. As a result, this half of #6 will not be overseeded this winter. Also, #14 has not been skipped yet which hasn’t hurt transition, but has led to a large population of Poa Annua in the winter. In order to clean up this problem, it will also not be overseeded this winter.

Golf Advisory Chair Yvette Schulz 520-825-0797 First Wed., 2 PM, WC3 The Golf Advisory Committee (GAC) will resume monthly meetings on Wednesday, September 6. The GAC provides the communication link between the golfers, administration management and the SCOV Board. Come to the meetings or express your concerns to one of the committee members so they can be discussed and recommendations made to the board. In September, we see the return of many SCOV residents who have traveled over the summer and the early return of some of our seasonal residents. Overseeding will be done towards the end of the month. Let’s have a great new golf season.

Astronomy Pres. Ron Collins 812-344-4772 scovastronomy@gmail.com Oct.-May, Third Thu., 7 PM, Activity Center/Navajo scovastronomy.com

L-R: Betty Moore, John Moore and Dave Thompson. Dave is leaving Sun City with a big thanks from the members for his expertise and all he has done for the club. Dave has been instrumental and involved for seven years in the Coronado School Astro program. We will miss Dave and his 12 inch telescope. The Astronomy Club is not meeting this month but are looking forward to our first in a series of outstanding astronomy speakers October 19. Everyone in SCOV is invited. Check out our web site. A Star Party was held this summer to test out our new viewing site. Dodging the monsoon clouds, great views of Jupiter, Saturn and constellations were seen. Did anyone see the eclipse on August 21? The field trips put together by member Barrie Shabel, are truly highlights of the year. We had trips to Mt. Graham and Kitt Peak last year. Our club always gets an outstanding guide at these facilities.

Bible Men’s Bible Study

Jerry Anderson 520-638-6586, Rick Thomas 520-591-0475 Oct.-May, Tue., 7:30 AM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Kimball We’re getting ready to start our regular morning Bible study in October. Be sure to set aside Tuesday, October 3, 7:30 AM to join us in our in-depth study and discussions. If you haven’t been to the men’s Bible study in the past, this is the time to revive the spiritual component of your life... the most important decision you might make this year. We enjoy the conversation and, for those who can put it off long enough, the breakfast get-together at The Views Restaurant afterward. Look forward to something great each week.

It has been a challenge to keep the shop open consistently because too few monitors are signing up for shifts. If you are a monitor who isn’t away for the summer, please consider helping your fellow club members by signing up on

Precept Women’s Bible Study

Linda Miller, 425-890-9967 Corinne Diven, 520-971-9430 Oct.-Apr., Wed., 9 AM, WC3

We always welcome new members, even if you cannot attend the entire session. Our fall session begins Wednesday, October 18 with the last half of the book of Jeremiah. Our facilitator for this study is Dorothy Smith who will lead us through a review of our weekly homework. We then view a DVD lesson by David Arthur. Our study of God’s Word to His people through the prophets helps us to observe the Scriptures; we will learn about God’s message to a rebellious Judah as Babylonian exile loomed. Join us for a blessed experience with stimulating discussions.

SCOV Book Club Co-Pres. Joyce Franke 520-818-7955 Co-Pres. Cynthia Kartman 414-732-3063 Glenda Tonkin 520-207-4802 gt99673@gmail.com First Mon., 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge At our September meeting we will discuss El Paso by Winston Groom, the first work of fiction in 20 years from the author of Forrest Gump. The book is set during the Mexican Revolution and follows a Boston railroad magnate as he desperately searches across the Sierra Madres for his grandchildren who have been kidnapped by Pancho Villa. At our October meeting we will discuss Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child by Bob Spitz. This detailed biography of the famous cookbook author and TV star so well known to most Americans through her PBS cooking shows, starts at the beginning with her early life in Pasadena. The book covers little known aspects of her life in the 50 years before she found fame as the cook book author and TV French chef. It draws a picture of the real woman behind the warbling voice and cheery manner and attempts to place her in history for the remarkable impact she had not only on how Americans eat and view food, but the pioneering role she played in the development of food TV shows.

Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 9:30-11:30 AM, WC1 Amy Lowell’s “September, 1918” still resonates today: “This afternoon was the colour of water falling through sunlight; / The trees glittered with the tumbling of leaves; / The sidewalks shone like alleys of dropped maple leaves, / And the houses ran along them laughing out of square, open windows...Some day there will be no war, / Then I shall take out this afternoon / And turn it in my fingers, / And remark the sweet taste of it upon my palate, / And note the crisp variety of its flights of leaves. / To-day I can only gather it / And put it into my lunch-box, / For I have time for nothing / But the endeavour to balance myself / Upon a broken world.” How we laud the predictability of nature, her emphasis on renewal, while despairing about the unchanging nature of humankind. Sadly our world is even more broken today than it was nearly a century ago.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Now is a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Our classes offer you a great opportunity to learn. Even 40 years after his death, the Joseph Pilates exercise system is in high demand. Fortunately, Sun City offers these classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. People ask if the benefits, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility? The answer is a firm yes. Additional benefits you will notice when taking the group mat classes, are better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. Classes are specifically designed for seniors and are taught by two experienced instructors. The cost is only $8/class with annual club dues of $20 pp. Please join us or just come by and watch. Call Mary.

Many medical professionals now recommend Tai Chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. Tai Chi is credited with decreased pain, improved sleep and mood, and better quality of life by Tufts University School of Medicine research. In our classes we not only enjoy learning Tai Chi form, we also increase flexibility and strength and even learn to reduce stress. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, teach us how to apply Tai Chi principles to our daily lives. Would you enjoy Tai Chi? Why not try it out? The October 5 introductory class is free. Newcomers, please contact one of our co-chairs for class details.
