edding is the northern California basecamp of recreation, resting below Mount Shasta, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and the Trinity Alps. Graced by the Sacramento River winding through downtown, the city boasts two high priority advantages for groups of all kinds. First, a natural and refreshing landscape. The unique design of the bridge was conceived by world-renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It is the first bridge of its kind in the United States, and is the tallest working sundial in the world! The massive 217’ pylon leans due north and functions as the gnomon of a sundial, casting its giant shadow on a garden-bordered dial plate at the bridge’s north end. The tall pylon and cable stays allow the bridge to avoid the nearby sensitive salmon spawning habitat. STATE & NATIONAL PARKS WHISKEYTOWN NATIONAL RECREATION AREA nps.gov/whis This beautiful park features cool rugged canyons, forests, year round streams, and of course, Whiskeytown Lake. Sandy beaches, marinas, camping facilities, excellent sailing and fishing, plus numerous marked hiking and mountain biking trails make this park a favorite for visitors and locals alike. Situated on the south shore of the lake is a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, commemorating his dedication of the dam in 1963, shortly before his assassination. Whiskeytown has four major waterfalls you can visit year-round. One of these– the 220-foot cascading Whiskeytown Falls – was recently rediscovered, making it the region’s tallest waterfall. SHASTA STATE HISTORIC PARK parks.ca.gov Old Shasta’s historic brick buildings mark the location where the area’s “Queen City” once stood during California’s gold mining days. The park features an excellent museum that is still home to the original jail and gallows. The Litsch General Store and the Blumb Bakery have been restored to their original condition. CASTLE CRAGS STATE PARK parks.ca.gov Named for the 225 million-year-old, 6,000-foot tall glacier-polished crags, this beautiful state park offers swimming and fishing in the Sacramento River, hiking in the back country, and a great view of 16

LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK nps.gov/lavo This extraordinary park boasts incredible mountain scenery and fascinating thermal wonders. Access through the park is limited during winter months, but excellent cross-country skiing is available, as well as interpretive snowshoe tours led by park rangers. It's time to get some mud on those tires and adrenaline in those veins! Just 10 miles northwest of Redding is the destination off-road enthusiasts seek, Chappie-Shasta OHV. This area offers over 200 miles of roads and trails on approximately 52,000 acres. You'll be able to see Mt. Shasta, Shasta Lake, and the Trinity Alps. If camping is a part of your off-roading trip, there are places available adjacent to the staging area below the Shasta Dam.
