SHASTA CASCADE WONDERLAND ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Tuesday March 11, 2014 California Welcome Center The regular quarterly meeting of the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association was held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Anderson Welcome Center. The meeting was called to order at 10:06 a.m. by Chairman Ed Rullman. 3. Approval of December 2013 minutes a. Ed Rullman made motion to approve minutes, Linda Austin 2nd motion. Vote: All in favor, 0 abstained, motioned passed to approve December 2013 minutes as written 4. Option to add additional agenda items: a. Laurie Baker added Financials to agenda b. Linda Austin moved to approve agenda, Jeff Titcomb 2nd all in favor 0 opposed 5. Introduction of new board members a. Kelli Gant – Trinity County (Trinity Lake revitalization Alliance) b. Michael Han – Lassen County (The California Parks Company) not present 6. Financial Report a. Laurie Baker presented SCWA Year to Date for review b. Pointed out that VG ad sales exceeded expectations
c. Jeff Titcomb motioned to approve the Financial Statement, Linda Austin 2nd, all in favor, 0 opposed 7. Update on raising Shasta Dam – Matt Doyle a. Storage is emphasis – Feasibility study scheduled for 2015 b. Second meeting with LaMalfa scheduled for March 18th to connect FS and BOR – both have limited knowledge and info on project c. Matt is optimistic about protecting recreation on lake 8.
Update on California drought - Matt Doyle a. Effect on this year’s season: 254 – 275 feet down predicted worst case scenario b. Attendance at Caverns highest ever for Jan & Feb due to mild weather and interest in exposed structures from lower lake level (110 feet down as of today) c. Need to put positive spin – still have 245 miles of shoreline even with low lake – premier lake with most water in state d. USFS will be pushing recreation in low lake conditions – ie trails, metal detecting. Dave Myers new acting district ranger is pro-recreation. e. Matt requested that SCWA promote Shasta Lake at trade shows this way f. Bob Kingman suggested potential scuba diving opportunities on lake g. Kelli Gant expressed desire to partner with Shasta Lake on any marketing efforts h. Laurie Baker said we will post marketing info submitted to our SCWA Facebook page i. Ed Rullman hopes that transient visitor passing through may be curious to explore lake, RCVB has full page ad in Via magazine on Redding
9. Bob Kingman – Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) a. SNC is a state agency, 1 of 10 in California. Ten year anniversary this year. Promote tourism and recreation in region encompassing 22 counties (all but 2 of SCWA’s counties in SNC region. ) Co-op marketing, partnership with Sierra Business Council and National Geographic. Encourages SCWA participation on their site. Receives 35,000 hits /mo, 197 countries. Print – Sunset, VIA, Sierra Heritage Magazine, Visit California. Attracts the visitor that leaves a place better than they found it. Accepts donations, “voluntourism”. Wants to build and promote agri-tourism opportunities. Training workshops available to build prominence on website. Geo-tourism sites have direct link to SNC site. SNC is Grant funding organization- mostly bond funds. Largest volunteer event – Great Sierra River Clean Up – co-op with Coastal Commission. Training for any organization wanting to coordinate a clean-up effort in community. Next SNC board meeting June 11-12 Shasta County – includes tour and meeting. 10. Ed Rullman opened discussion on acquiring County revenue support – asking BOD to approach their counties to contribute minimum of $500 to SCWA. Deb Lucero signed off teleconference 11:00 a.m. 11. Ed Rullman – Tourism Summit a. Wants to have more county representation this year. BOD needs to encourage participation. b. Laurie Baker requested that each director get their city/county /state officials on board, and bring a sponsor to the table. 12. Adjournment: a. Linda motioned to adjourn, Jeff Titcomb 2nd.
