SOLVING THE
planning puzzle
Wedding consultants offer brides and their families a wealth of support and information. Consultants listen to your ideas for your day and develop a realistic budget to guide you. You don’t have to spend weeks or months researching various vendors, your consultant has already done it. Their information does not come only from websites or well-chosen referrals from satisfied brides — it comes from personal experience with the vendor, experiences of other consultants, and the vendor’s industry reputation.
Christian Ellis Images
A consultant can also advise on questions of modern etiquette. Want to do your own planning? Consider hiring a consultant for day-of services. They’ll coordinate all the vendors and keep everything running smoothly so you only have to relax and enjoy this special day.

YOUR
ceremony
Planning your wedding can be both fun and exciting. Finding the perfect venue, selecting your dream gown, and tasting wedding cake samples are all memorable moments in the process. With all the anticipation, one of the last aspects couples tend to tackle is the ceremony itself. And really, there is no wedding without the ceremony! Ceremony planning often occurs later in the process largely because most couples find the task daunting, if not intimidating. They feel pressure to have perfectly written vows and include all the right details. Don’t fall into the trap of overthinking your ceremony. The ceremony itself can be as simple or elaborate as you and your partner want. To get started planning your ceremony, begin with the traditional elements. Partners who are combining religious faiths may pull from both backgrounds and create a blended ceremony. Discuss with your priest or minister your options. For more secular ceremonies, walk through the typical aspects with your partner and whomever is conducting your ceremony. Though it’s often fun to have a friend or family member be ordained online to do the honors, that may set you back if you’re unsure of what you want in a ceremony. An experienced minister will be able to guide you with a variety of ceremony options. Your typical ceremony will include a few traditional elements. The officiant addresses the guests. This may include a bit of backstory on you as a couple, or commentary on the sanctity of marriage. Next, any readings or songs will be performed. The officiant will then speak directly to the couple, and vows follow. Don’t feel pressured to write your own vows if you’re not up for it. Using traditional vows work just as well, and there is nothing in particular you are legally required to say in your vows either way. After the vows, comes the ring exchange. This is an intimate and special part of your ceremony that is a part of virtually every wedding. That, and the kiss to follow. Additional elements will follow the ring exchange, prior to the pronouncement and kiss. Jumping the broom, unity candles and sand ceremonies remain popular. When kids are involved, this is a good opportunity to incorporate any ceremony aspects that may include them. Ultimately, the ceremony can be as traditional or unique as you and your partner would like it to be. Make it yours.

UNPLUGGED weddings One of the signs popping up more and more at today’s weddings has one simple statement: “Welcome to our unplugged ceremony.” Technology has allowed all of us to take amazing photos and videos with the cameras on our phones, but that does not make us professional photographers and videographers.
Toast Entertainment
When a phone, or even worse a tablet, is sticking up in the air during your ceremony, it can actually obstruct the work of the photographer and videographer you’ve hired. We’ve seen the end result too many times. A professional photographer is actively taking a picture when a guest decides to try to snap a shot and unintentionally destroys the potentially stunning shot. So, more and more couples are opting for an “unplugged” ceremony, making it clear on their wedding websites, in their invitations, by including signs at the ceremony entrance, notices on programs and even announcements from the officiant reminding guests to “unplug” and be present.

UNDERSTANDING contracts When hiring wedding professionals, reviewing contracts and understanding what you are agreeing to is extremely important for you and the vendors you will be working with. The wedding reception is the first time you formally receive your relatives and friends as a married couple. Properly planned, it becomes one of the most joyous parties you will ever host. It can be as simple and demure as cake and punch in your home, or encompass a glorious five-course dinner and dance. TIPS FOR THE PERFECT CELEBRATION n Decide
your guest count, budget and what kind of location you would like, THEN begin looking for a venue.
n The
services of a professional consultant or coordinator can greatly enhance and expedite the planning of your reception.
n When
looking at sites, be sure you are looking at comparable costs. Some facilities include tables and chairs, others don’t. Be sure to find out what the total costs will be.
n Reserve
your reception spot 12 to 18 months in advance.
n Station
the bar well away from the buffet or food service area so there won’t be any congestion.
24 • The Celebration • www.TexasWeddings.com
n Remember
to make it yours. Allow your personalities and the things you love as a couple to be represented. You can do this through your cake topper, photo booth props, guest ‘book’ or favors.
n Possible
locations include meeting halls, hotels, restaurants or clubs. Churches sometimes have their own halls. Gardens and historical mansions also make for wonderful receptions.
n Visit
the reception site and map out how you’d like it set up. Consider grouping furniture to stimulate conversation without obstructing traffic flow.
n Be
sure to find out what limitations the venue has regarding other vendors.
n Include
something interactive that your guests will enjoy. Who doesn’t love yard games during cocktail hour or a photo booth at the reception?
n Check
out the parking. Is it free? If not, consider ordering parking passes and include them in the invitation. Arrange to pay only for those redeemed.

rehearsal DINNER A dinner following the wedding rehearsal is customary. It is a lovely way to begin your wedding festivities and allows your attendants and families to relax and get acquainted. The meal is traditionally hosted by the groom’s parents and includes the immediate family of the couple, the wedding officiant and members of the wedding party and their spouses. It is becoming a standard to also include special out-of-town guests who have already arrived. The rehearsal dinner is the traditional time for the groom’s father to make a formal toast to the couple. It is also an appropriate time for the attendant’s gifts to be passed out.

wine 101 When selecting wines for your reception there is a wide variety from around the world. Take a little time and try them. Not only will it be educational, it will also be enjoyable. ROSÉ WINES Rosé wines are seen everywhere today, from Instagram to your favorite bar, and range from dry wines to sweet white zinfandel. Since it falls between white and red wines it pairs well with almost all foods including chicken, seafood, salads and charcuterie. Rosé will satisfy serious wine-drinkers as well as those not usually wine drinkers. WHITE WINES Chardonnay is America’s number one selling white wine. Chardonnays are considered a dry wine with little sweetness. Pinot Grigio is a medium-full bodied white wine. Not normally as dry as chardonnay, pinot grigio is often a favorite of those who don’t normally drink wine. Riesling wines come in a variety of styles, light to full-bodied. A sweeter riesling is an excellent choice to pair with a chardonnay to offer two different white wines.
questions to ask

Champagne can only be called that if it is from that region of France. Otherwise it is wine in champagne-method. Usually very dry or “brut.” Prosecco is aromatic with crisp flavors making it ideal for your cocktail reception or dessert course.

OUT-OF-TOWN guests When planning your special day, take a few minutes to think about those people in your life who will travel from far away. You will want to make their stay an enjoyable, as well as memorable, experience. Most out-of-town guests prefer not to impose on those involved in the hectic wedding schedule. Make this easy for them by negotiating a group rate with a local hotel.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe… What does it mean? “SOMETHING OLD” Wearing something belonging to her family represents a link to the bride’s family. Most of the time the bride wears a piece of family jewelry or her mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress. “SOMETHING NEW” Wearing something new helps bring good fortune and success to the bride’s new life. The wedding dress, if new, fills this requirement admirably.

“SOMETHING BORROWED” Wearing something worn previously by a happy bride brings the new bride happiness in her marriage. Borrow a piece of jewelry, a handkerchief or part of your wedding attire from a married friend. “SOMETHING BLUE” This tradition dates back to biblical times when blue stood for purity and fidelity. In times past the entire dress was blue, then it became a blue band on the hem. Today, most brides wear blue in their garter to satisfy this tradition. “SIXPENCE IN THE SHOE” Placing a silver sixpence in the bride’s left shoe was done to bring wealth to the bride’s marriage.

If your wedding reception is being held at a venue that does not provide catering, you should hire a professional caterer. Because a caterer is experienced in planning and working with large groups, they have the knowledge and expertise to ensure that a sufficient quantity of food will be available and that it will be properly refrigerated and/or heated on your special day. n Select
your caterer between 9 and 12 months before the wedding.
n Know
the date/time, location, estimated number of guests and budget BEFORE reaching out to caterers.
n Look
for caterers that offer your preference of specific cuisines. Do they accommodate for special requests such as gluten-free, kosher, vegetarian or vegan options?
n Always
ask for a taste test of the suggested menu items.
n Smaller
parties, less than 100, are best served by a sit down dinner while a buffet service usually works better for larger groups.
n Be
sure to ask your caterer exactly what services are included in the price quote.
n When
is the required deposit due in order to hold your specific date and when is the final balance due?
n Your
caterer should not only select, purchase and prepare the food, but also do the set up, serving and cleanup. Check your contract to confirm all of these items are on it.
n Does
the catering services being proposed include table linens, china, silverware and glassware?
n What
do they do with all the leftover food?
Be sure your guests remember your special day… make their taste buds happy by choosing the right caterer!

PRESERVING your gown Your wedding gown will undoubtedly be the most beautiful dress you ever buy and probably the most expensive. GETTING FIT to be wed You’ve found your dream wedding gown, only its not quite perfect yet. Ask your consultant how intensive they think the alterations will be and if they can give you an estimate on how much it will cost. any where from six weeks to three months for alterations. The more intense the alterations are, the more time that is needed. The most experienced fitters typically book months out. Next, gather pricing information and read reviews. When evaluating the information, avoid going straight to the bottom-line pricing and instead read carefully through the packages to ensure you’re comparing apples to apples.
You’ll want to note how many hours of shooting you’ll receive, how many final shots you’ll be provided with, and if a second photographer is included. A second photographer may not seem essential at first, but it guarantees you’ll experience precious moments you may have missed during the wedding when looking at your photos after.

Like many wedding tasks, choosing the ideal photographer can feel overwhelming. They are, after all, the one responsible for preserving your wedding day memories. With the right steps, you’ll be able to find the photographer that meets your style, your needs and your personality.

to skip. The featured photos and portrait highlights on the photographer’s website showcase their best work. But during your interview, be sure to look at complete wedding albums as well. Be sure to ask your photographer about photo rights. You’ll want to determine if your photographer maintains the rights to the photographs, which means they are the only ones who can provide you prints. Alternately, if you own the rights the photographer will hand over the digital copies for you to get printed at anytime, anywhere. And as much as these details matter, don’t ignore your compatibility either. After your wedding planner, you’ll spend more time around your photographer the day of the wedding than most of your other wedding vendors. Be sure

help you find the perfect songs to be played. If you have a specific song you would like played, most musicians can make it a reality by working with an arranger. n The
size of the group you hire depends greatly on how large of a venue you are in and how many guests you are expecting. A full string quintet would be more suited for a larger venue while a solo violinist can set the same mood in a smaller venue. churches have policies regarding the music played at weddings. In fact, two of the most iconic songs played at traditional weddings, “The Wedding March” and “Bridal Chorus” are considered inappropriate by most churches. Have a conversation regarding what the church’s policies are before you get your head set on walking down the aisle to a specific song.

dancing at
YOUR WEDDING At the reception, the first dance is by the newlyweds to their favorite romantic song whether it is a slow waltz, a classical piece or a popular current hit song. Other traditional dances at the reception are the father/daughter dance and the mother/son dance. More than likely, your first dance is going to be caught on video since virtually every wedding guest will have their phone out at the reception. We highly suggest hiring a professional videographer to capture this significant moment in time but even if you do not, you will want to be ready to be tagged by your friends on social media.

Knowing their first dance will be well documented, couples may want to give a polished and graceful performance. Dance lessons can help prepare for what may be the performance of their lifetimes. Start early. Dance lessons should start four to six months before the wedding, especially if you are a newcomer to dancing. Haven’t picked your song yet? No worries. Your dance instructor can help you find the perfect song. Be committed. Plan to have a lesson at least once a week. Be patient! Learning to dance can be stressful but it can also be a lot of fun and a great date night activity.

WEIGHT LOSS
advice
Almost every bride, once she starts thinking about a gown, also starts thinking about her body. If like most brides you are looking to get slim and trim for your wedding, there are a variety of ways to do it. The first step to losing weight is checking with your physician. Once you have been cleared to start a weight-loss program, you can start considering the many options available and what is right for you.

LET RENTAL experts HELP If you have decided on a garden wedding or have rented an unfurnished hall, you will find yourself in need of some expert advice on setting up your ceremony and reception. Visit a rental store that specializes in party rentals. Many offer staff consultants to help you with every detail of arranging a truly comfortable and elegant outdoor ceremony, wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. They can supply all of your chairs, tables, linens, china, crystal, and flatware needs. You will find beautiful additions too, from lounge furniture to elegant silver chafing dishes. A fully equipped rental store will have a wide selection of wedding accessories including but not limited to arches and huppahs, candelabras in assorted sizes and styles, aisle runners, vases and décor to match several different wedding styles. Tell your rental specialist how many guests you’ve invited to the reception and the square footage of the room where
168 • The Details • www.TexasWeddings.com
it will be held. With this information they can accurately plan your seating and serving arrangements. A deposit will typically be required to reserve specific pieces to ensure the inventory is available on your wedding day. Also remember to set tentative delivery, set-up, and pick-up times. A word about renting — Most prices quoted are for a one-day charge and you will be responsible for set-up and tear down of all items rented. If you are only renting a couple items, it makes sense to pick them up and drop them off; however, if you are renting several items we suggest talking to your rental company about delivery, set up and tear down. Your rental professional will provide you with everything you need to create a truly memorable affair. Trust their advice; they plan more parties in a year than most people plan in a lifetime.

why use a travel agent In a wired society where the world is literally at your fingertips and where online travel sites abound, it is easy to think you can make all your own travel arrangements. In some cases, this can be the worst mistake you can make. Whether it is for your dream destination wedding or your dream honeymoon, a certified, professional travel agent can be your best friend. Why? n Many
online sites represent only a portion of the major airlines, resorts, hotels, etc. For example, many low-cost airlines such as Southwest, Jet Blue, etc., aren’t represented on the major online travel sites. A travel agent/ agency can access all the best deals from all providers, saving you money.
n Travel
agents know the destinations; the facilities; the vendors and the rules and regulations of the place you are dreaming of. They know which local wedding professionals are reliable with the best prices and which aren’t.
n A
travel agent will handle virtually all the arrangements not only for getting you and your wedding party to your destination wedding but also your guests. They will track who has booked, who has called and what everyone’s
176 • Happily Ever After • www.TexasWeddings.com
travel details are. They will also handle all the details of your actual wedding, acting as your destination wedding consultant.
n They
don’t rely on online photos; they visit the locations and facilities. They know if the location, facilities and service are everything the brochure promised because they’ve been there themselves!
n The
same is true if you are only seeking to book your honeymoon. A travel agent will have access to the best prices, the best packages and information on the best locations.
n Using
a travel agent will NOT cost you more money than booking the trip on your own. Travel agencies make their money off the commissions paid by the suppliers, not their customers.
n Travel
agents provide service before, during and after your trip.
Wedding and honeymoon planning can be stressful on its own. If those plans include travel, it can be even more so. Save yourself time and money. Hire a professional!

buying your NEW HOME TOGETHER If one early step in a relationship can top wedding planning in overall potential stress, it’s buying a home together. Whether it’s your first home or forever home, you’ll want to cross that threshold with a thriving relationship, not added strain. And we’ve got the advice to help with that.
Alternately, if you both have a realtor in the past you’ve worked with that you liked, set up a phone call or face to face with each. If you’re both 100% comfortable with one option, you’re all set. If there’s hesitancy either way, seek out a fresh face you both can agree on.
FIND THE RIGHT REALTOR
UPGRADING TO A HOME
Much of the advice we give couples for finding the right wedding planner applies to finding a realtor. Ask for recommendations, read reviews and take time to find a realtor that gives you peace of mind.
Many couples will be moving from a shared apartment to their very first home just before in the year after their wedding. Starting a marriage is thrilling, and taking that commitment a step further in buying a home is equally so. And can be equally trying without the right communication.

Go to our website to finish reading all the important details about buying your first home together.
R
Buying your first home can be a daunting, yet rewarding experience. This will be your first major financial purchase as a couple, filled with new questions and decisions that will need to be made. You’ll want to be financially prepared, but also relationally prepared. Give yourself time to dream, then discuss non-negotiables. Have each of you make a list of must haves, would like, and can’t stand. Keep an open mind. This exercise is all about compromise. N LI N
O N LI N E
A
Take time to talk as a couple about reasonable expectations. If you’ll be purchasing and moving into your home just before or shortly after your wedding, set clear expectations on who is responsible for what. This might mean one of you focuses on wedding planning, and the other manages the home purchase. Or maybe one of you is better at big picture planning, while the other agrees to knock out the small tasks. Include each other on key decisions so neither feels left out completely, and take time to enjoy the fun and special moments.
E
Many couples may know family or friends that are realtors. Choosing a friend or family member may certainly go a long way to finding someone you trust. Still, that personal relationship can also make business discussions and decisions overly complicated. This is especially true if your partner is not feeling confident, they are the right choice as a realtor. Be open and up front early on with each other if you’re feeling uncomfortable or concerned about getting into a sticky family situation

TO OUR TEXAS WEDDING GUIDE COUPLES AND WEDDING PROFESSIONALS, I started the Wedding Guide in 1986 and have been blessed to ride this roller coaster with you for the last 35 years. We have grown from a 32-page pamphlet to a 200+ page full-fledged magazine. We started at a time when the internet wasn’t part of our daily lives, yet here we are with an interactive website, mobile planning app and a strong presence on multiple social media platforms. Thank you for allowing me to work with you over all these years! I will still see you a few times a year at the Bridal Extravaganzas, but now it’s time for me to spend more time with my loving wife of 40 years, Kristin, and my family so I’ve decided to part with the Texas Wedding Guide portion of my business. My wish is that you all have long, happy marriages. Now get back to your planning!
— Robert Lowman
TO OUR TEXAS WEDDING GUIDE COUPLES, I want to personally congratulate you as you begin your wedding planning journey. We are on a new journey here at the Wedding Guide as well. At the beginning of 2021, after weathering a year of change and challenge, I officially took over as owner of the Texas Wedding Guide. Though as couples you will only be planning your wedding with us for a short time till you walk down the aisle, you will be part of our Wedding Guide family forever. The Texas Wedding Guide remains committed to giving you the best tools to plan your wedding. As we grow and evolve, it's you we keep in mind every step of the way. TO OUR WEDDING PROFESSIONALS, I want to take a moment to honor each of you, recognize your accomplishments and thank you for your support. I will forever be grateful for the relationships we have built and look forward to working with you for many years to come.
