Welcome
to the ninth annual Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival! It’s hard to believe that almost ten years have passed since this festival first hit the ground running. But this year is the year that the festival takes place at not one but two great locations! Following on the success of last year, we’re honored to be screening an impressive and provocative program of documentaries at the IUPUI Campus Center, just a few blocks west of downtown Indianapolis. The Friday and Saturday portion of the festival, however, will be held at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, with screenings in the DeBoest Lecture Hall, and the sumptuous Tobias Theater. And as always, we’re offering an amazing line-up of gay-themed cinema, none of which have ever been shown in Indianapolis before. It’s going to be a grand weekend!
Our presence at the IMA is by special invitation, and we hope that you’ll appreciate the first rate screening facilities they offer. The DeBoest Lecture Hall has bragging rights to a long history of innovative film programming. Meanwhile, The Toby provides 600 comfortable seats, balcony seating, “alternative” seating, high-def digital projection, and Dolby surround sound, all in stylish, comfortable furnishings. In between screenings, enjoy a sit-down meal at the Nourish Café, just a few steps away from either theater.
On Sunday, the spectacular IUPUI Campus Center will be the place to be for a variety of stimulating documentaries, speakers, and discussions, all afternoon long. We’ll be holding these screenings on the fourth floor of the center in both a large multi-purpose theater and a smaller viewing space to facilitate interaction.
As always, the weekend is full of entertainment with another year of festival “firsts” and something to suit everyone’s taste. Clearly, musicals and singing are popular these days, so the choice for the Premiere Night film is The Big Gay Musical, directed by Casper Andreas, a festival favorite of our audiences in years past (A Four-Letter Word and Between Love and Goodbye). This hilarious feature will be preceded by the side-splitting short Buttery Top, directed by local filmmaker and film festival personality Catherine Crouch. Spend all day with us on Saturday, with features ranging from the gripping drama Hannah Free (starring Sharon Gless), the screamingly funny Misconceptions (starring Orlando Jones), and Shamim Sarif’s sexy lesbian romance I Can’t Think Straight.
But don’t go home early, because for the first time in festival history, we’ll be offering a rock concert at the end of the day. You read correctly! This year, through a special and productive collaboration with Kweering Up Naptown, a local organization of music promoters, the festival will present a program of musical artists ranging from techno-pop and hip-hop to hardcore punk, all with a decidedly queer edge. The line-up includes Soce: The Elemental Wizard, Nicky Click, and 8 Inch Betsy—an exceptional bill of fare!
Arts organizations and film festivals must work hard to survive these days. If you’re impressed by what you experience this weekend, then join us in thanking the Indiana Youth Group. The film festival exists as official IYG programming, but also through tireless volunteer efforts. The steering committee is composed of community-minded individuals who work countless hours behind the scenes. As a committee we do all of this with several purposes in mind: to bring a strong program of queer cinema to local LGBT audiences, to create an enjoyable weekend of entertainment, and to direct the public’s attention to IYG and all that they provide for local youth. We thank these individuals for their time and dedication.
We have our sponsors to thank, though, since it is through community efforts that we remain active as a cultural event. If you enjoy the film festival this year, please take a look at the names and logos displayed throughout the program. These are the generous forces that keep this event going, year after year. Their faith in our project and their abiding loyalty help us meet our goals. It’s the sponsors who keep this festival intact and propel us forward as we grow.
Because of the generosity we’ve received from both the IUPUI community and the IMA, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve lowered our prices this year! Transitional economic times call for open minds, which is why we’re reducing the rate on the Full Festival Pass and the Premiere Night Pass, as well as creating a special discount for an all day pass for Sunday’s documentary program. This is a great year to be part of a weekend-long arts event for such a low price.
Finally, it’s my pleasure to thank you for coming to the festival this year! Our event offers everyone the chance to gather in a lively environment to laugh together, make new friends, and discuss the various issues that continue to impact our lives. When you show up for any part of the festival, you become part of that environment and add to the mix. Thanks again, and enjoy the weekend!

THE BIG GAY MUSICAL
DIRECTORS

RUNNING TIME 100 minutes
Paul and Eddie have just begun previews for the new Off-Broadway musical “Adam and Steve Just the Way God Made ‘Em.” Their lives strangely mirror the characters they are playing. Paul is looking for the perfect man and Eddie is dealing with how his sexuality and faith can mix. After yet another disastrous dating experience, Paul has an epiphany. He is done dating and just wants to be a slut like the sexy chorus boys that share his dressing room. Eddie has to tell his parents that he’s gay and is starring in a show that calls the bible the “Breeder’s Informational Book of Living Examples.” Eddie comes out to his family and Paul goes on Manhunt. Eddie’s parents are destroyed by the news and Paul can’t even have a good one-night stand. But after musical numbers with scantly clad tap dancing angels, a retelling of Genesis, tele-evangelists, a camp that attempts to turn gay kids straight, and a bunch of showtunes, everyone realizes that life gets better once they accept who they really are. And they are just the way God made ‘em.
