IMA THE TOBY FRIDAY 7:30PM

PREMIERE FEATURE

Director: Darren Stein, USA, 94 Minutes There could be no better way to open this year’s festival than with G.B.F., a groundbreaking twist on the classic teen comedy. When closet-case Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States of Tara) is outed by his high school’s overeager Gay Straight Alliance, he becomes a hot commodity for three teen queens who believe that a G.B.F. – “gay best friend” – is this season’s must-have accessory. More powerful than any bullies, fashionista Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars), drama queen Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, Precious) and red-headed ’Shley (Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) stop at nothing to score Tanner as their pet, even if it means driving a wedge between him and his real G.B.F. Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of RJ Berger). Director Darren Stein’s flashy, hilarious comedy about the changing landscape of high school acceptance features riotously funny performances by Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is The New Black), Will & Grace star Megan Mullally, SNL’s Horatio Sanz and Harry Potter’s Evanna Lynch, as the school’s feisty homophobe. With the most quotable one-liners since Mean Girls, and ingenious references to your favorite teen films and shows, including Sixteen Candles, Carrie and Glee, G.B.F. will leave you feeling gaymazing for weeks.

IMA THE TOBY SATURDAY 12:30PM

Directors: Matthew Stenerson and Jeremy Wilker, USA, 94 Minutes Rene and Frankie make the best of going to high school by dreaming up high-fashion photo shoots, and bribing their siblings to model for them. Rene is as gay as the day is long, loves his fashion magazines and designing clothes. Frankie lives for her dark eye shadow, her camera, and punk rock. The drama they dream up in their fashion shoots becomes very real when they end up fighting over their classmate, Sasha. They quickly become friends with Sasha even though his soccer mates don’t exactly approve. Sasha is a shy soccer player with a soft spot for poetry by Pushkin and a secret dream to ask Frankie to prom. Frankie accepts his invitation despite the fact that she’s already agreed to be Rene’s date. Death to Prom is a bizarre love triangle loaded with enough glamour and attitude for Project Runway, but with enough heart to make Molly Ringwald bite her lip with anticipation. In a time when the pressures to conform in school can reach tragic consequences, Death to Prom strives to show positive, smart, yet fabulously-flawed characters that teens (and former teens) can relate to.

LECTURE HALL SATURDAY 12:30PM

Director: Mars Roberge, USA, 100 Minutes Patricia Field’s six seasons as costume designer on Sex and the City earned her several Emmys and widespread acclaim in the fashion industry, and the distinction—which she only grudgingly acknowledges—of setting sartorial trends ranging from rosettes to nameplate necklaces. But this flamboyant tribute to Field focuses instead on the relationships she cultivated with the people she employed, collaborated with, and mentored at her iconoclastic boutique, The House of Field in downtown NYC. Field served as a den mother to a sprawling community of queer and trans artists, performers, and club kids throughout much of the ’80s and ’90s. In a series of interviews, dozens of members of this generation offer testimonials to the designer’s influence on their lives and on American culture at large. Basquiat, Warhol, Bowie, Haring, Boy George, Bette Midler, Lady Bunny, Kenny Kenny, Juliette Lewis—who hasn’t passed through Field’s world? Coupled with appearances by icons such as Amanda Lepore and World Famous Bob, as well as archival footage of drag balls and reminiscences from the chain-smoking Field herself, the film is a testament to a time, a place, a community, and one woman’s influence on it all.

LECTURE HALL SATURDAY 2:45PM

Director: John V. Knowles, USA, 95 Minutes Mean Girls meets Vincent Price in this campy horror flick that is fabulously filled with lesbian eroticism, witty feminism and virginal blood. Taking its cue from the popular horror-comedy films of the 1950s, Chastity Bites centers around a small-town high school whose new abstinence-only Sex Education teacher Liz Batho (Louise Griffiths) is actually the infamous Elizabeth Bathory, countess from the 16th century who bathed in the blood of virgins in order to stay young and beautiful forever. The treatment apparently works, because she's still at in 21st century America, only virgins are a lot harder to come by. Fortunately, a group of the school's rich, shallow, popular girls, dubbed "the Hiltons" by those not in the clique, are eager to join Ms. Batho's exclusive chastity club–not from any actual desire to protect their virtue, but in the hope that it will lead to a possible deal for a reality series. More skeptical of their teacher's intentions is Leah (Allison Scagliotti, Warehouse 13), social outcast, staunch feminist, and hard-hitting reporter for the school paper. Can she finally put an end to the “Blood Countess’s” reign of terror, and save her best friend from becoming the next victim? Director John V. Knowles has served up a film destined to be a camp classic, one that is genuinely funny, scary and clearly celebratory of Girl Power! Art By Tim Seeley

Director: Kent J. Henry, USA, 60 Minutes This heartfelt, hilarious comedy showcases the journey of legendary Indianapolis entertainer and entrepreneur, Ruth Dix (a.k.a. Gary Ooley). The film includes interviews with Ruth and many previously never-before-shown performances from the 1980s. Ruth shares a multitude of stories, from his birth in Indianapolis, his first time performing and many more, all told with his signature wit and humor. The performances highlight his talent and reconfirm his legendary status. This is Kent J. Henry's third film to premiere at the Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival. In 2009 his film Union County was shown and in 2010, Talbott Street 1980-1986 won the Audience Award for Best Documentary and set attendance records. IMA THE TOBY SATURDAY 6:30PM

Director: Jeffrey Schwarz USA, 85 Minutes Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz (director of Vito and Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story) celebrates the life and legendary career of Harris Glenn Milstead, known as Divine—John Waters’s fearless muse and an international drag icon. Divine’s triumphant ascent is the ultimate underdog story, as he transformed himself from a bullied fat kid in working-class Baltimore to a larger-than-life celebrity, starring in the notorious trash classics Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble, rubbing elbows with Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol and ultimately conquering Hollywood in the beloved cult hit, Hairspray. Schwarz honors Divine as a serious character actor and immortal star through film clips, rare archival footage, music videos, television interviews, and personal recollections from those who knew and loved him best, including Waters, Mink Stole, Ricki Lake, Tab Hunter, Holly Woodlawn, members of The Cockettes, and his mother, Frances (who passed away in 2009). Divine was a true force of nature who continues to inspire misfits, punks, and drag queens 25 years after his untimely death at the age of 42. Largely crowdfunded via Indiegogo and Kickstarter campaigns and through the power of social media, I Am Divine is a loving and definitive biographical portrait, made by and for fans, who will be inspired by this film and be sent into fits of uproarious laughter. This one is not to be missed.

Lifetime Achievement Award In honor of his cinematic achievements, The Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival is thrilled to award Divine with our very first Lifetime Achievement Award.
