Welcome to the 21st Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival! Over the past couple years, we have leaned on and yearned for the arts more than ever. Many of us sat in our homes absorbed in films, movies, concerts, music videos, anything to lift our spirits, make us laugh, move us to tears, and show us how to dream again. So when it came time to curate this year’s festival of films, we decided these should be the same cinematic standards for which we’d use when determining our selections. We managed to narrow our program to an outstanding lineup of works that delight and inspire, while maintaining our commitment to highlight stories of marginalized and underrepresented LGBTQIA+ artists. 2021 marks the 21st year for the Indiana LGBT Film Festival and the first year in which we present it as a hybrid event. We’ll feature dual film-viewing capabilities with both digital streaming of films, as well as in-person screenings. Another first—we are beyond excited to finally announce the beautiful new venue that will host our event— Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie on the near eastside of Indianapolis! We cannot wait to share this experience with our film-loving community in this fantastic new space. And while considering all our achievements over the years, we’re reminded of the benefactor of all our proceeds: Indiana Youth Group, best known as IYG. It remains the longest-running LGBTQ youth organization in the entire country. For more than 30 years IYG has provided safe spaces and vital support for thousands of LGBTQ youth in our state. To learn more about this critically important organization and why we are honored to continue to support it, please visit IndianaYouthGroup.org. On behalf of everyone involved—from our hard-working steering committee to the filmmakers, writers and actors, to all our loyal sponsors, and adoring audiences, we sincerely thank you for supporting the 2021 Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival. And now—on with the show!

We stand with the people of color and trans members of our community for justice and equity. As LGBTQIA+ people, we feel it is vital that we advocate for a world where no one is subject to acts of violence simply for being who they are. Recognizing the importance of representation and visibility, we have chosen to use our platform to highlight marginalized and underrepresented LGBTQIA+ artists. The stories told by these incredibly talented women, transgender, indigenous, people with disabilities, and people-of-color creators are vital, brilliant, and important. We believe in the transformative power of film to create empathy and dialogue for change.

Out of one small London venue called The Blitz came a generation of outrageous teenagers, working class and art school kids, who would define the look, the sound, the style, and attitude of the 80s and beyond. This is the history of the London venue that—amid strikes, racism, and homophobia in 1979—became the Soho equivalent of Studio 54. Inspired by Roxy Music and David Bowie, and driven by a gender-bending, genre-busting desire to make it, these penniless superstars in the making – including members of Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Visage, Ultravox and Sade herself - would go on to change the face of fashion, music, and culture across the world. Co-Director and Co-Writer Bruce Ashley: “It didn’t matter if you were gay, or straight, what color you were, everyone was a misfit who just wanted to dress up, dance, and be together. Not to mention the 80s was a breakthrough era when it came to personal expression, and the Blitz Kids were a huge part of that.” This fun and fascinating documentary features exclusive interviews with: Boy George, Midge Ure, Gary Kemp, Rusty Egan, Marilyn, Princess Julia, Andy Polaris, Robert Elms, Chris Sullivan, Stephen Jones, Dylan Jones, La Roux, Michele Clapton, Darla-Jane Gilroy, Fiona Dealey, and Steve Dagger.

After a bad breakup, a down-and-out drag queen flees to the countryside to live alongside his sharp-tongued grandmother (Academy Award winner Cloris Leachman, in her final starring role) who finds herself in a state of decline. Aspiring actor Russell (Thomas Duplessie), aka drag persona Fishy Falters, is a fish out of water. After a disastrous non-debut at Toronto drag club Peckers, Russell leaves his bougie boyfriend and takes shelter with his grandmother Margaret in the Canadian wine country. Margaret, played by the inimitable Academy Award winner and gay icon Cloris Leachman in her final starring role, is a woman coming to terms with her own mortality while determined to hang on to her independence. While Russell struggles to establish himself as an entertainer at the local dive bar and flirts with Zachary, the not-so-straight busboy, Margaret fends off the best intentions of her daughter, Russell’s mom, who wants to keep her safe by sending her to a retirement home. As tempers wear thin and family secrets are revealed, Russell and Margaret fight to maintain their dignity while being true to themselves. This affecting family drama also features a number of notable Toronto drag acts, including Tynomi Banks, Fay Slift, and Miss Fiercalicious.

STREAMING NOVEMBER 13-14
Teenaged AJ ruefully attends a family vacation, but the arrival of a lovely young lifeguard challenges her commitment to moodiness. For the outspoken and awkward teen AJ (Nell Barlow, giving a droll, witty breakout performance), going on a family vacation spells disaster. With her mother Tina (Jo Hartley) constantly nudging her toward more feminine outfits and corny family activities, AJ isn’t even provided the escape of good Wi-Fi. The boredom and restriction are broken when AJ meets Isla (Ella-Rae Smith), a lifeguard at the vacation spot who could offer solace from the constraints of normalcy. The hope of a summer romance begins to break AJ free of the heteronormative expectations of her mother. And as AJ gets closer to Isla, she tiptoes toward liberation and self-conviction—with all the stumbling blocks of young adulthood awaiting her. Fresh with new perspective and buoyant humanity, Sweetheart marks the feature writing and directing debut of Marley Morrison. In the tradition of such queer teen classics as Edge of Seventeen and Beautiful Thing, the film delivers a heartwarming queer coming-of-age story for a whole new generation.

Jeffrey Schwarz (I Am Divine, Tab Hunter Confidential) returns with a glittering, stranger-than-fiction documentary of 1950s Hollywood. Two young songwriters find themselves caught in movie star Gloria Swanson’s web, when she hires them to write a musical version of Sunset Boulevard. What follows is not what you would expect. For Gloria Swanson, the iconic star of Sunset Boulevard, both the movie and the character of Norma Desmond provided a renewed spotlight. Swanson had begun to envision a musical stage adaptation of the film. Enter Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley, two struggling songwriters (and romantic couple) looking for their big break. Enamored by the idea of helping Swanson step into the next phase of her career, as well as craving the fame and fortune of writing a Broadway hit, Stapley and Hughes eagerly agree to her proposal. As the days wear on, a triangle begins to take hold that goes beyond mere creative partnership as Hughes and Stapley find their intimate relationship intruded upon. In attempting to re-create Swanson’s most famous role, Hughes, Stapley, and the star herself discover that within each of them was a streak of Norma Desmond waiting to catch fire.

THE RISE OF QUEER COMICS 40
STREAMING NOVEMBER 20-21
From Tom of Finland to Dykes to Watch Out For, comics and zines have been firmly embedded in queer culture since before Stonewall, through the AIDS epidemic, and continuing through today’s modern obsession with superheroes. But this deeply queer art form finally gets its true moment in this extensive documentary that explores over 70 years of history.
MICS QUEER CO F O E S I R THE
Director Vivian Kleiman explores how the once underground world of queer comics grew to encompass the many mediums, styles, and inspirations that make this art form what it is today. Vividly translating these bright, imaginative, and triumphant images from the page to the screen, Kleiman makes a case for the beauty, artistic value, and historic legacy of five of the most influential artists in the queer comic space: Alison Bechdel (Fun Home), Rupert Kinnard (Cathartic Comics), Howard Cruse (Stuck Rubber Baby), Jen Camper (Juicy Mother), and Mary Wings (Come Out

Even the most dedicated queer comic lover will be delighted to delve into the personal histories and inspirations behind Kinnard’s Brown Bomber, the first serialized queer Black character in comics, among others. This crisp film is rounded out with historical deep dives and intimate interviews with young up-and-coming artists inspired by the vanguard, and already influencing the next generation.

Richard, a filmmaker in his forties, is suddenly overwhelmed by anxiety during filming. He walks off set and spends a memorable night wandering through Paris in search of answers, comfort, and inspiration. Richard (portrayed by writer-director Antony Hickling), a gay filmmaker in his forties, is suddenly overwhelmed with crippling anxiety in the middle of a night shoot for his latest movie. Without a word to his cast and crew, he walks off the set and wanders through the Paris streets in search of answers and hopefully, the inspiration to continue. During his long, dark night of soul-searching, Richard bonds with a British woman he meets in a bar, runs into an old boyfriend, visits an eerily profound fortune-teller, and has a myriad of other random encounters (including a memorable visit to a gay sex club). Some of the encounters are warm, some disturbing, others life affirming. None quite provides what Richard is seeking. As dawn approaches, Richard has to confront his fears and question his deepest desires in order to find renewal to continue his life journey. Feature director (and actor) Hickling, known for his gay-themed movies, breaks new ground with this contemplative, insightful portrait of a gay man at a creative and personal crossroad.

When the death of a close friend unearths the long-thought lost final reel of a classic undiscovered film, Jimmy (Charles Busch, Psycho Beach Party and Die, Mommie, Die!) and his social circle of obsessive collectors each concoct wild, underhanded schemes to cash in on a big sale of the film. The latest creation from the legendary Charles Busch, this hilarious caper stars Busch as Jimmy, an Old Hollywood-obsessed New Yorker who’s one of an extended community of discerning— and extremely catty—movie memorabilia collectors. When the death of a close friend unearths the long-thought lost final reel of a classic Tod Browning horror film, Jimmy and his cohorts each concoct underhanded schemes involving false romances, drag personas …. and maybe vampires? … to cash in on a big sale of the film. But can the urge to bring the moviegoing community together with this lost classic prevail over the desire to get rich quick? Featuring memorable turns from Margaret Cho, Tim Daly, and Julie Halston, The Sixth Reel is equal parts salty and sweet, and an utter delight. We can think of no better way to celebrate a return to the movies than this celebration of unbridled—and sometimes unhinged—movie love!
