Air, Water, Slums Research & Design | Dhaka, Bangladesh | 2014 - 2016 2nd Place Prize – FuturArc 2016 | BCI Asia Featured at Javits Center in AIA New York Designs Exhibition in conjunction -with the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 Cited in ''Alluvium: Dhaka, Bangladesh in The Crossroads of Water'' Critics: James Timberlake, Stephen Kieran “Great design research that leads to effective action is rarely dispassionate. Unlike scientific research, design research is at its best when it begins from a position of empathy, moves through that empathy to analysis, then forges design action guided in equal measure by the two. If we do not ground ourselves in empathy for those we serve, we will often miss the most important facts—the hippo lurking unseen in the river next to the field. We have selected three methods of observation for their power to give rise to empathetic and informed planning and design. The first is storytelling. The second is photography. The third is indices of key facts together with analytic and synthetic diagrams that convey complex information, often across time and place, visually integrating multiple realities into previously unseen relationships.”

While there are lots of aspects effecting dwellers’ health, the disease transmission graphic shows 2 the relationships between mortality and environmental conditions in city slums. And as an important 4 material exchange place - kitchen is playing an important role in affecting environmental conditions of dwellings and slum communities. Aside with water and air flow within the cooking area, diseases grow silently and killingly.

A mobilized, modularized, and materially localized kitchen for the slum residents is proposed in the project. Its affordable Bamboo structure and corrugated iron roof articulated a waving envelope, which not only ensures the durability of the shelter, but also passively exhaust air pollutions out, and collect rain water for multiple use.
