Anand Menon & Shobhan Kothari AVS Residence (Mumbai)
Practicality, modernity and traditional values topped the list of requirements in the design brief from the client. In actual sense it was the East meeting the West, because the client comes from a very rooted Indian traditional culture which is matched with their influences of western experiences. Modern lines and eastern artifacts juxtapose together, to set up the right tone for the whole design. The aim was to design functional spaces that encouraged maximum interaction. Simplicity and serenity permeates the entire space.

The fluted wooden fins lined in the corridor camouflage the utility storage and door to media/guest room. A red console is placed at the entrance with brass mirrors above it.
The bar unit is designed as a console cantilevered from the wall and off the floor. It helps to define circulation and also create two pockets-one the living room and the other the dining area. There is a suspended light over one side table.
the new old era The light chandelier (a modern interpretation of cylindrical pipes designed in conjunction with Klove studio) holds the design in dining area together. The dining sideboard with brass masks placed above it forms the backdrop to this space. The master bedroom has been designed keeping in mind the clients love for library and study. Incorporated into the design, the space is mostly treated in wood and fabric cladding to invoke a sense of warmth. The son's room with its white and concrete look embodies the spirit of youth. the challenges Material supplied by the builder and to match the material proposed by the architect, to achieve the contemporary style blending with traditional accessories.
the inspiration The apartment was in the newly constructed tower in Mumbai and hence lot of things in terms of civil was already provided by the builder. Challenge was none of these wanted to be removed by the client and only the overlapping dĂŠcor needs to be done. The huge 12' length floating console without any legs in between the living and dining room was the main highlighter and most enjoyable task to design.
