Anand Menon & Shobhan Kothari NG Residence (Mumbai)

The design of this single family home developed in response to the client's main focus on designing unusually elegant spaces and interiors. The client's gregarious lifestyle demanded a home that would accommodate their lifestyle and allow them to alter the decor in terms of accessories. Whether classic or contemporary, loud or minimalist, concepts do not follow with just elements of designs. Each space either fiction or non-fiction, merry or productive has its own story telling.

dextrous The house has the simplest and purest form of structure. It allows not many changes in the layout with a very rigid structural grid. The place was imagined as a cozy home vibe with neutral colours, dark wood and vibrant objects. These objects were blended with handpicked modern designs, lending a riveting story to the minimalistic and unique décor. The tower was constructed throughout using only RCC structures, there was no scope to change the layout of the apartment as desired by the client but the requirement of lavishness and more elbow room was achieved by using light materials.

Top Left: A metal screen designed in a media room forms an interesting layer as a window dressing. The colors in the sectional sofa with ottoman add character to the space. Top Right: A lounge space has been carved out in the master bedroom. Bottom Left: A sepia print on canvas forms the backdrop of the dining area. This creates a illusionary visual window into the outside world, thus expanding the room.

Top Left: The children’s room designed with an overhead bunk bed. The back painted colored glass on the TV/study unit completes the visual. Right: The highlight wall has been designed out of Lego blocks. The basin is suspended on a counter designed like ‘swing’. Bottom Left: The vaulted ribbed wooden ceiling accentuates the entrance leading to a mirror juxtaposed with a yellow arm chair. Bottom Centre: The playroom bathroom explores ‘playfulness’ in the form of geometric tiles while keeping the wall surfaces muted.

exponential lifestyle

The entire base structure in kids' room is in whites - all walls, floor and ceiling. This allows playing with colour in loose furniture and gives flexibility to the client to shuffle as per their requirement. Kitchen flooring is a highlighter in itself using different monograms tile, in which the contrast to it are all white which allows the space look more lively and fresh. The living room is the huge space opened to the scenic view. The idea here was to give one large living space without dividing the space into two halves. This allowed us to accommodate 16 pars at a time having conversation with each other without facing any ones back. Client is a nature lover as well as admires the hotspot of the cosmopolitan cities. The aim here was to have one big painting, allowing us all the arrangement in living area to be of one part and not as separate zones.

the challenges Each room has its own story itself as per individual taste; hence to blend all the space together with the help of material and controlled lines made us achieve one good product.

the inspiration The tower was constructed throughout using only RCC structures, there was no scope to change the layout of the apartment as desired by the client but the requirement of lavishness and more elbow room was achieved by using light materials. The living area as a double space was critical in terms of planning seating arrangement and not letting the space divide into two separate living. As per the design a large portrait was added to merge all the space together and make it look good facing.
