Arun Prasad Prakashan Tarah Residence (Coimbatore)

The client, Mr. R Balachandar is the Managing Director of Haribhavanam Hotels, the leading multicuisine non-vegetarian restaurant chain in the district. He wanted a beautiful house and a design that was efficient in utility. The house defines the varying contexts of the relationship of warmth and poise of the interiors to the playful expanse of the landscape that contain it. Also he was clear about the house being fully Vaastu and Manaiyadi Shastra compliant. The family residence for Mr. Balachandar was conceived to be surrounding the north-facing pool. Thereby, all the spaces in the public realm have an unhindered visual access to the pool and surrounding landscape, making the pool the central attraction.

immersive Vertically, the spaces are punctured around the stairwell which is of a minimalist sculptural quality & material palette that the rest of the house compliments. Apart from the visual relief & lung space, the pool is also an important focal point - doubling up as family outdoor space, shielded by a towering north wall that also acts as a movie screen. This also ensures adequate privacy from the surroundings. The interiors are buffered from the harsh southern sun by a sculptural wall, with an internal court in the foreground. This ensures privacy and credibly cooler spaces within, during the summer months. The north-south axis can also be imagined as a lively, transparent core. Floor to ceiling sliding glass panels turns interior spaces into covered extensions of the outdoors.

“The spatial progress into the house, though derived primarily on Vaastu principles, lends a contemporary realization of the client's lifestyle.

A harmonious and qualitative design approach resulted in this bright and lively space with unique built forms. The bedrooms open into a unifying view of the north pool and the vegetation beyond. All bathrooms borrow from nature and are provided with an internal court. The detached car-portico in the foreground of a serene water body, clearly demarcates the movement into the semi-public space of the house. The landscaped court resonates into the interiors via fenestrations based on cubic proportions. The dĂŠcor and furniture is modern combined with vibrant colours. The shell of the house simple and stark, the fabrics lively and the artwork installed with attention to the surrounding.

the challenges There were two main aspects that were important - one to follow the Vastu and Manaiyadi Shastra, two keeping that in mind the rooms had to be designed with the pool as the focus. This was the major challenge that was faced by us.

the influences “As they wanted the pool as their main focus, the design had to be such that compliments the water. Hence, water became our inspiration while designing the house. - Ar. Arun Prasad Prakashan
