Arun Prasad Prakashan Sudhakaran Residence (Coimbatore)
Building a house for a leading industrialist is always intriguing. Mr. A. Sudhakaran, has his leading business house at Coimbatore. Having an expertise in the field of Engineering, the client expected his house to be perfectly designed complying with Vastu Shastra. He expected an efficient layout which led into designing an H-shaped plan which became a distinct factor for the house. The H-shaped plan resulted in minimal space for the hallways. For this family of three members, east facing three-bedrooms were designed to embrace the morning sunrays. The minimalistic design of the house reflects the client's simplicity. The house embodies a minimalist design and material palette. Floor to ceiling sliding glass panels turns interior spaces into covered extensions of the outdoors.

appealing A double height volume dining connects the public spaces (living) with the private spaces (bedrooms). At every step the client pushed for efficiency in layout and design. A Steel spiral staircase clad with wood veneer connects the first floor living which overlooks the double height volume of the dining. Glazing a top of the staircase wall introduces daylight into the interiors. A floating concrete canopy protects the entrance patio. The western walls have minimal opening. The front portico canopy is floating concrete roof placed on metal pipes which transfers the load to the beam. The Double-heighted dining space has 15' x 21' glass panel without Grill. Every corner of the house resembles the comely personality of the client.

the challenges When it was decided to have the front portico canopy floating on a concrete roof placed on metal pipes all the load was transferred to the beam. The double-heighted dining space that has a glass panel without grill was done in laminated glass for giving security and fixing this on site was quite a challenge.
the influences “The inspiration for this project was the passionate involvement of the client. He also guided and made sure that every element was justified and in sync with the overall design philosophy - Ar. Arun Prasad Prakashan
