Hiren Patel The Courtyard House (Ahmedabad)
The courtyard house is designed with a grid of 7'x7'. The house has been designed in such a way that all the living spaces and passages face an open space and garden, which was also the main design concept since its inception. Thus creating a central courtyard that holds the reflection pool was the major design element. This also makes the design reclusive, leaving the garden at the backside but still visible and accessible from all the rooms of house.

sophisticated The formal living room comes first along with 2 bedrooms followed by 9' wide passage parallel to the central courtyard and reflection pool. This house has big openings and skylight to allow ample amount of daylight to enter the house throughout the day. It is also a crucial feature in Ahmedabad climate. Screens and deep verandah protect the huge openings from exposure to harsh sunlight. Verandahs also become wonderful outdoors spaces during relatively cool evenings and mornings.
“The passage ends with a dining room and a family room. This area being the maximum used area has a big verandah at all three sides, which adds value to the north side garden.”

The Courtyard House is made of RCC roof structure covered with wood. Also, the verandah and upper rooms are covered with wood. Floors are covered with natural marble stone and wooden planks. Custom designed doors and windows are made of wood and laminated glass. Basic principles of architecture have been applied to the house and use of art and art-objects make the spaces of 'timeless' quality. The aspiration quotient of the clients were high, thus the design aims to capture that feeling into the planning and interior design of the house. Architecture, interior and landscape design is done by HPA, thus synchronized well with each other.

the challenges As such no challenges apart from that we had to follow some principles of Fengshui. And there was a check on our plan for those principles to make it a Fengshui perfect plan.
the influences Ahmedabad is hot and dry. Thick plantation like tropical area like Kerala etc. is a dream here. We took an inspiration from the tropical gardens and created a layout in such a way that one can enjoy the greenery from every part of the home. Also we inspired with old time British Raj buildings with deep veranda all around. This works superbly and keeps the inside areas cool by creating shades all around. We follow this principle and created deep verandas on south and west side. Where we kept east free from this to bring direct morning Sun rays inside home & garden till the edge of the house. Thus creating our own signature.
