Hiren Patel The Frill House (Ahmedabad)
This house is designed with prime focus on landscape. The client being a nature lover aspired to be in touch with nature. The interiors radiate an understated feel of elegance and luxury brought about by the combination of space and palette of material used. The south side garden is designed like a forest to help tree plantations create shadows on the building. The south side of the garden gets the morning sun which lingers around till late evening. The north side of the garden has more lawn area with the house's shadow during afternoon and evening. It experiences the morning sun and in the later part of the day is shaded. Thus it becomes a summer garden to use in hot days.

enlightening While entering the garden, one would experience an aesthetic feel. Moving ahead one would arrive at the room that is attached to the garden. As one enters the informal living area, one gets a complete view of the summer garden from a huge window. While moving on the south side one passes through a passage and finds the beautiful landscape garden on both sides. There is a special glass pavilion built for the family. It is the family engagement area that is completely surrounded by tall palm tropical plants and huge and dense tree plantation. Going ahead into the house, one encounters a grand double heighted verandah towards the north opening to the summer garden. And from dining and study to the end of the house which is a master bed room. It

Both the master bedrooms are at the same location - one at ground level and another on the first level. Both bedrooms get beautiful rays of the morning light. The entry car porch, pooja room and guest room also have different types of gardens. The climate directed the plan formations. Outside one will notice masses of forms in white. It makes for sculptural quality against the prominent greens of landscape. The interiors are well thought of and minutely detailed with great workmanship and customized furniture. The Indian colors and objects in interiors bring joy in the house, which breaks the soberness.

the challenges The lot of the house is individual and not a part of gated community, thus it required to design in such a way that it can get privacy. The peripheral thick plantation looked as a perfect solution. The house plan had to follow the basic Vastu principles in terms of purring the rooms in layout as per Vastu.
the influences Architect Charles Correa had designed a lovely house (much smaller then this house in size) with innovative idea of Summer & Winter sections of the plan. This created few spaces inside house, which is either good for summer or a winter. This ignited me to work consciously with climate and we derived a Summer & Winter Gardens, as landscaping was the prime philosophy in the design process. We created certain part of garden, which will be well used in winter, and certain part will be good for use in summer, thus promoting outdoor activity throughout the year.
