geometric The perimeter available for the house is spliced into three rectangular parts –the middle part becomes a compressed atrium that changes profile across the floors and links the front [roadside] and rear rectangles visually and physically. This is the crucible space - it brings together the entire house and creates a high energy volume. The front box comprises of a semi-open car park at the ground level and bedrooms at the upper two levels. The three part plan split is complemented by a three-part vertical shift in the three floors of the front box. The end planes are dynamic and slant inwards and outwards –forming an interesting and aggressive street façade. The rear rectangle is opened out at the ground level with full height glazing.

“The interior atrium section connects all rooms across the 3 floors and also finds expression in the exterior.”

The first floor accommodates a bedroom and the second floor has a small swimming pool. The terrace is developed as a penthouse suite - a master bedroom opening into a courtyard, a terrace with a pool, and an annexe with a dressing and bathroom space. Different spaces in the house open out onto gardens on the ground and on slabs. The inclined walls create a changing interior dynamic and make one aware of the body in space. Through a controlled use of inclined geometry and interiorized sectioning, VV Residence is a contemporary setting for the modern Indian family.

the challenges The inclined walls at upper levels are in concrete with exposed quality formwork. Design of scaffolding and shuttering system for these parts was done carefully along with choice of appropriate materials for shuttering to allow easy de-shuttering without losing the edge definition. The stairs are in structural steel - they were fabricated off-site and assembled on site.
the influences “The client is an interior designer and was keen to participate in the choice-making for materials and interior detailing. The client’s grandmother was an artist and the design works to create opportunities to display her large oeuvre of paintings. Combined with our interest in form and internal section, these factors influenced the final spatial experience of the project.” – Kiran Venkatesh
